DE OORSPRONKELIJKE PLANNING DOOR TIM FISHER December 25th to 26th Mt Makiling , Los Banos. Upon arrival at Manila International Airport , you will be met by my representative and driven to Los Banos and checked into the Trees lodge, in the University campus where you will be staying for two nights. Trying to do anything in the Philippines on Christmas day is very difficult so don’t expect too much! I will have hard time finding someone to meet you! Upon arrival ,you will have a little time for birding so head for the ‘Dairy husbandry” to look for Spotted Buttonquail. Also Lowland White-eye and Indigo-banded Kingfisher on the campus.

On the 26th, you have the whole day on Mt Makiling. The forest trail starts outside the lodge and can be very productive. Over 50 endemics have been seen on the mountain. Stay the night at Trees Lodge. December 27th. At 4.00am,the van will take you north through Manila to Banaue. On the journey, you could stop at the Lagawe gorge for Indigo banded Kingfisher,if you have not yet seen it.You should arrive in Banaue around 3.30pm. Check in the Banaue View inn for a two night stay. December 28th Mt Polis , Mountain Province. Today at 4.00am, you take the jeep from the Banaue View Inn up to Mt Polis where you will spend all day. Sometime during the day, you need to down to the village of Bay-Yo where you can see Luzon Water-redstart in the river plus Benguet Bush Warbler in the grass. Reurn to Banaue late afternoon. December 29th. Today, you return to Mt Polis for a few hours. Leave at 8.30am for Banaue. Depart Banaue for Baler at 10.30am.You will arrive at the Amco lodge around 8.00pm. December 30th to January 2nd. Talaytay Watershed , Aurora. The drive from Baler to Talaytay can be productive particularly in one or two spots. Celestial monarch can be seen here. It is also good for raptors on the trip. You will arrive about midday at Talaytay in time for lunch. In the afternoon, it is best to do the grasslands and open country near the lodge. The lodge is basic with a couple of simple rooms and some tents. I am setting the camp up for a small group that are coming after you. There will be a guide to show you where to go although he will not know the birds. I will give you some directions as to where to look for what birds. On December 31st and January 1st, you have two full days to explore up the valley. It is a trail up the river along forest edge but goes under canopy many places where you can see such birds as Rabor’s Wren Babbler , Furtive flycatcher, Golden-crowned and Luzon Striped Babbler besides many of the more usual Luzon endemics. Each day, you return back to the camp. You will be leaving early on the morning of the 2nd and drive back to Baler and then on to Subic bay in Bataan on the other side of Luzon. Check in the Crown Peak hotel. January 3rd. Subic Bay. You have most of the day until around 2.00 pm for birding. Specials in the area include Green Racquet-tail, White-lored Oriole and White-fronted Tit. Later in the afternoon, you will be driven back to Manila for an overnight stay. Check in the Malate pension house.

January 4th to 8th. Palawan. You will need to take a taxi at 6.00am for the terminal 2 airport for Philippine airlines. The flight to Puerto Princesa (pr195) is at 8.10am. In Puerto Princesa, you will be met by your guide, Arnel Mallari, who will take you first to the beach to see waders and Chinese Egret and then set off to Sabang near St Pauls National Park. The birding on route is good so you can expect to reach Sabang by around 4.00 pm. You will stay in the Last Frontier Lodge for two nights. On the 5th and 6th, you will have the most of two days birding in the park and on the edge. The area is very productive and most of the Palawan specials can be found here. Arnel knows the birds and where to find them. Later on, on the 6th, the car will drive you to Puerto Princesa for an overnight stay in the Badjao hotel. On the morning of the 7th, you will go to the Iwahig penal colony for a full morning’s birding. Birds you need to see here include Palawan flycatcher and Melodious babbler both of which are absent or very rare at St Pauls. After lunch, you will drive south to Brooke’s Point in order to go to Raza island. The island is the only place where Philippine cockatoo can be guaranteed as many pairs breed on the island.Other birds include Mantanani Scops Owl and possibly Grey Imperial Pigeon. You will be staying in a nearby small resort. On the morning of the 8th, you will be driven back to Puerto Princesa airport to catch the Air Philippines 11.30 am flight to Manila. You will then connect to the 2.00 pm flight to Cebu. Upon arrival, you will transfer to Cebu island to get the late afternoon ferry to Tagbilaran, Bohol. Upon arrival in Bohol, you will be met by Chito Delage, your driver for the next three days. He will take you to the Chocolate Hills guesthouse for a two night stay. January 9th to 10th. Rajah Sikatuna National Park, Bohol. You will have most of the next two days for birding in the park. The van will take you and pick you up in the evening and even fetch some lunch for you. The park has easy trails to follow . First thing on the morning of the 9th, walk up to the scout camp for early morning fly overs. Look here for Samar Hornbill. It is also good place to see Black-chinned Fruit-dove. From here you can enter the forest which brings you round to the Logarita station. All the specials , such as Azure-breasted’s Pitta and Rufous-lored Kingfisher, can be seen in any part of the forest.. Stay after dark in the scout ground to look for Phil.Frogmouth and Philippine Nightjar. Philippine Scops, Hawk and Eagle owls are also present. On the 10th, you will need to leave the park around 3.00 pm to catch the late afternoon ferry to Cebu where you will take a taxi to the Vacation hotel for a two night stay. January 11th. Tabunan Forest Reserve, Cebu. The day at Tabunan will be organized by the Cebu Biodiversity Conservation Foundation who will arrange for you to be met at your hotel at around 4.30 am and taken to Tabunan. Your local guide will be Oking who knows where to find the Flowerpecker and Shama plus the other specials. At the end of the day, you will be taken back to your hotel. January 12th to 15th . Picop, Surigao, Mindanao. You will take the 8.00 am flight on Cebu Pacific (5J 593) to Davao arriving around 8.40 am.You will be met by your guide Zardo Goring and driven to Picop. In the last hour and half of your journey, there are some good areas to stop at where a number of birds can be seen. Upon arrival, you will check in the Paper Country Inn for a three night stay. If there is time, Zardo will take you out to the airport to look for marsh birds and the Asian Grass Owl. Picop is losing its forest fast , and it will probably take quite a bit of driving around to find some good areas of forest. The area along road ¼ may well have gone by next year although I hope not. As yet, we have not found an alternative to Picop. Zardo and I have been doing some scouting looking for new areas .I believe we will still be able to see all the specials still at Picop though. After lunch on the 15th, you will drive to Davao for an overnight stay in the Casa Leticia hotel.

The Philippines 24 December 2002 – 21 January 2003 Peter Collaerts 31/34

January 16th to 20th. Katanglad Mountains , Bukidnon. The same vehicle will drive you Dalwangan, Bukidnon, leaving Davao at 6.00 am after breakfast. The drive will take around 5 hours and will take you to Lamitan on the Katanglad slopes. Here, you will be met by your guides with horses to carry you bags. The walk up the mountain takes around one and a quarter hours. You should arrive in time for a late lunch. The birding is basically above the lodge up to around 1800 metres .The highest point is where you eventually find the Apo Sunbird or Philippine Bullfinch. The guides, who unfortunately have little English, know where we go to look for the birds. I am hoping that the Philippine Eagles will be breeding this year and will have a nest. The lodge is basic but I will be providing all the facilities including the roof! It will be best if we buy the food for you ahead of time which will be charged separately. There will be a cook to prepare all the meals for you. You will leave the area about 3.00 pm and walk down to Lamitan where you will be met and driven to your hotel in Cagayan de Oro for an overnight stay. The next day on the 20th you will be taken to the airport to catch the early morning flight to Manila.
