2016 Season v 3

An odyssey of birth, death, divorce and dinner. by Dramaturg Laurie Smits Staude and Director Jocelyn A. Brown

Many of us can recall those moments, when something strikes us, causing us to look around at ourselves, our partners, our friends, our parents, our kids, and to think to ourselves…when did this happen? How did I get here? Stages of life can pass by too quickly, before we’ve found a moment to breathe and recognize where we are and where we’ve been. It can be a decade before we notice that we’re in a new stage of life and our priorities have shifted; time is always right around the corner and often sneaks up on us. Playwright Dan LeFranc said, “I have so many friends who, when they are younger say, ‘I’m never having kids; I’m never getting married; I’m never doing this’; and then it’s like one blinks and they’re saying, ‘I’m married and I have three kids’. And I’m like, ‘How did that happen?’ I feel like the play is an expression of that – of how quickly life can change.” In this brisk rush of human life, it is often hard to recognize that life is changing and to see how many, or how few, moments we’ll actually have to impact each other. Playwright Dan LeFranc grew up right here in Orange County, in Aliso Viejo, California. He studied English and theatre at University of California, Santa Barbara, received his MFA in Playwriting at Brown University, and is currently Playwright in Residence at Playwrights Horizon in NYC. Throughout his childhood, many of his important life events ended up taking place in restaurants; LeFranc’s parents worked in restaurants in both Southern California and the Midwest. He recalls more meals taking place in restaurants than at home and the noise of family arguments sometimes shutting down restaurants for the night. LeFranc wanted to explore the seminal moments that families can have, especially at a meal, while finding a new way to represent contemporary dialogue that reflected the true nature of verbal conversations. How many important life events take place around a dining table? Moments such as introducing a new boyfriend or girlfriend, announcing a birth or an engagement, celebrating a wedding, fighting with siblings, mourning a death? After reading Thornton Wilder’s The Long Christmas Dinner which reveals a family over decades at the dinner table in accelerated time, LeFranc wanted to explore this idea in the modern day. He researched his family’s history in restaurants in preparation for a “bake-off” playwriting workshop at Brown University in which playwrights write a play in two days. That is when he discovered he needed multiple columns of text to accurately represent all the unique “cross-talking” that occurred in order to capture the rhythm of overlapping, rapid-fire authentic conversations typical in his family and in modern conversations. After more years of play development, The Big Meal had its New York premiere at Playwrights Horizons in 2012.The Big Meal received a Lucille Lortel Award Nomination for Outstanding Play. LeFranc revealed he didn’t know the play would register with people the way it had, but he recognized that the abstraction of the piece allows us all to see ourselves in it. In LeFranc’s words, “…I mean it’s your family but it’s every family.”

by David Wendell Nelson Directed by Sara Guerrero

East Los Angeles is a difficult and dangerous place to spend your childhood, as Lupe Padilla finds out. As our story unfolds we are thrust into the world of poverty wages, gang violence, narcos, poor housing, INS raids, and a family fiercely devoted to each other.

Despite the barrio world around her, Lupe is determined to keep her family together. After the death of her mother and looming unemployment, she finds inspiration in an unlikely place that changes her life profoundly. The language and music are uniquely East Los Angeles, a wonderful hybrid of two cultures.
