The Big Idea: Youth Weekend 2019 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8 For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything. 9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. BIG PICTURE LIFE GOALS Jesus’ Warning: 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? Matthew 16:26 The Thessalonians’ Response: 2 We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, 3 remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7 so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 1 Thessalonians 1:6-7 9 For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 o Work of Faith: Serving the Lord and doing good from a place of faith and trusting God rather than feeling or wordly based motives. o Labor of Love: doing the hard work to love people, not just when it is easy to love. o Steadfastness of Hope: Having endurance to keep at following Christ even with things are difficult and there is pressure, knowing that in the end it will be worth it. o Imitators of Christ: Their life as decisions are following the model of Christ and how he lives. o Turning to God from Idols: A transfer of trust from asking wordly things to serve the function of God in life to trusting God to be God for us. How Did This Happen? 4 For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, 5 because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5 13 And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 WHY TALK ABOUT THIS? 1) We need to consider the _____________________ we have for the young people in our lives. 2) We need to pray for one another to have ________________ to the gospel. o Continued work for soft-hearted young people: There is still more to grow in.
