WEEK # 1 FORWARD COURSE >>

Lesson One- The Bible – God’s Words for Man –

A Bible is the most precious possession a person could have. We call the Bible the Word of God because it is just that – God’s Word to man. Although human beings may say things that in time are forgotten, every word spoken by God is very important. In fact, God’s words are eternal. God’s word is very important!

Isaiah 40:8The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

Matthew 24:35Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

Psalm 119:89 For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

The word Bible means Books. It is a collection of 66 books written by about 44 men. The writers of the books of the Bible were inspired by God to write what they did. Actually, they were only used by God because God was and is the true author of the Bible.

In the following verse, what was it that caused the prophets to say and write the things they did?

2 Peter 1:21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

2 Peter 1:20Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

What does this verse mean to you?

God did not give the Bible to an individual or to a select group. The Bible is for everyone. God’s plan for man is universal – everyone comes to God the same way.

The Bible has 2 purposes: Scoffers of the Bible have existed throughout the years, yet it remains the best

seller of all books. More Bibles exist than any other book. There are two major reasons that God has given us the Bible.

1. The Bible tells us how to be saved – To those willing to prayerfully dig into its pages, the Bible gives complete instructions on how to receive salvation.

Page 2: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

2

2. How to mature as Christians – The Bible gives us the information we need to mature, or grow strong in the Lord. The Bible is a powerful tool in our hands. We can turn to it for help in all of life’s situations. It tells us how to live, how to eat, talk, act, how to take care of ourselves, etc.

Psalm 119:10-11[10]With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.[11] Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.

Why did the writer, and why should we hide the Word in our heart?

2 Timothy 3:16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Since the Bible is God’s words to man, every portion of the Bible is important in some way. We should not neglect any part of the scriptures, no matter how small. We should also let many scriptures work together in harmony before we draw any conclusions.

Understanding the Bible

God has given us two things to aid our understanding of the scriptures. First, the Holy Ghost helps us to understand what God is saying through His Word. After all, the Holy Ghost is the author of the Bible, and what better way to understand a book than to have the author himself explain it to you.

John 16:13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

John 14:26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Second, God has given us pastors and teachers to help us understand His Word. Everyone should be subject to a pastor who will lead one to a proper understanding of the scriptures.

Jeremiah 3:15And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Page 3: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

3

If you should have trouble understanding a passage in the Bible, pray and ask the Lord to help you. God wants to open up His word to His people. Your pastor has also been given to you by God to help in your understanding.

Important Facts:

1. The most amazing proof of the Bible's inspiration lies right on the surface of God's Word!  In the Old Testament alone, there are over 2000 prophecies that have already come to pass.  Nothing vaguely resembles this in any other book in the world.

2. The Old Testament contains 333 prophecies concerning just the coming of Christ, which include 456 specific details.  And they were penned by many different writers between 1500 BC and 400 BC – hundreds of years before Christ was born. Mathematician Peter Stoner had his graduate students calculate what the odds would be of any one person fulfilling just eight of these prophecies. He found the chance was 1 in 1017  –  or 1 in 100 quadrillion.  Stoner gives an analogy to attempt to explain this:

Take 1017 or 100 quadrillion silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas.  They will cover all of the state two feet deep.  Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state.  Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one.  What chance would he have of getting the right one?  Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man, from their day to the present time.

If that isn't amazing enough, Stoner had his graduate students calculate the odds that any one person would fulfill 48 of these prophecies.  The odds were 1 in 10156  –  but Jesus Christ fulfilled 333 specific prophecies!  Isaiah's detailed predictions of Christ's suffering in Isaiah 53 were written 700 years before the event – that's like trying to predict what will happen in an election in AD 2700!

3. God, in a supernatural way, has sustained His Word down through the centuries against all kinds of attacks.  Numerous tyrants have attempted to smash the anvil of God with the hammer of government power, but they are gone and it remains!  In the last two centuries, while the "higher critics" have been sitting in stuffy libraries spinning their theories that the Bible is an unreliable, unhistorical and mythological book, modern archaeologists have stood by the hundreds on the soil of Bible lands and held the cold hard facts of history in their hands, undeniably proving God's Word! 25 years ago, Time magazine stated, "After more than two centuries of facing the

heaviest scientific guns that could be brought to bear, the Bible has survived – and is perhaps better for the siege."

Over 100 years ago, Charles Spurgeon observed, "If you want to be thought very wise today, but look very foolish in about fifty years, attack the Bible.  Point out all the errors.  But if you're willing to be thought foolish now, but believing that in fifty years you will be vindicated, stand with the Bible."

Page 4: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

4

The Bible has been examined more than any other book in the history of the world.  Every word, syllable and letter has been scrutinized by hostile critics for centuries.  And still it stands!

o Mark 13:31   Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Over and over, modern science has confirmed the Divine origin of the Bible.  Even computer science has bowed its knee to the Word of God, as amazing linguistic and mathematical patterns continue to be found in the original text.  Michael Drosnin's best-selling 1997 book, "The Bible Code," popularized this concept and swept to the top of the New York Times bestseller list:

4. In the 1400’s, Columbus was trying to figure out the shape of the world. If they would’ve read Isaiah 40:22, they could’ve seen,

“It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth”…

Luke 17 talks about the rapture happening around the world: [34] I tell you, in that night there shall be two men in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. [35] Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.

5. George Washington had a blood disease in the last days of his life. Doctors tried to perform the procedure, “bleeding” on him, which ended up killing him. If they would’ve paid attention to the Bible, they would’ve known that the life is in the blood. Lev. 17:11

Lesson Two- The Apostolic Church Service

What an exciting place to be! It’s where God’s people gather together to worship God and to give glory and praise to Him who has redeemed them from sin. In church you will find energetic and uplifting music, testimonies of the great works God is doing, messages that are preached with power and anointing, and a awesome move of the Holy Ghost.

It is no wonder that the Psalmist David felt the way he did about the house of God.

Psalm 122:1

I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.

Psalm 84:10

For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.

Page 5: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

5

David writes that to be in God’s house for one day is better than a thousand days anywhere else. We know this to be true, for there is no better place to be than the house of the Lord.

The Bible commands us to attend church. Not only do Christians need to be ministered to by the Spirit of the Lord, but we need the fellowship of the saints. Together, we are the body of Christ, and there are times that God wants to minister to His body as a whole. Your pastor has spiritual food to feed you (the preaching of the Word), and God’s spirit will minister to you when you attend church. Just as a car must stop by the gas station at regular intervals, we as Christians must get our own “spiritual tank” refilled.

Hebrews 10:25

Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

This scripture says that we should NOT forsake (or turn away from) gathering together. It also states that church attendance becomes more and more important as the coming of the Lord draws near.

Your church has a set number of services weekly, which should be attended faithfully. Sunday services are just as important as mid-week services. Just as the physical body needs food to stay healthy, so does the spiritual man need regular “meals” to keep from starving. Services set by your church are basically a minimum for your spiritual health. Extra services, revivals, events, and activities are important as well.

Spiritual WorshipHuman beings were created for worship. In Heaven, constant worship is taking place before the throne of God. Worship is to be done in the way God has laid out for us in order to be pleasing to Him. There are many examples in the Bible of “how to” worship and “how not to” worship. Some examples of improper worship and the punishments that followed can be found in Genesis 4: 3-5 and Lev. 10:1-2.

Worship comes from a great love for God. The first commandment states, “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thine soul, and with all thy might.” (Duet. 6:5) God has done great things for us, and our worship comes from our great love and appreciation for Him.

Apostolic Worship is lively and active! Our worship is lively because our God is alive! Worship involves body and spirit. Our bodily posture indicates how we feel about the Lord.

Let’s read Psalm 150:

Page 6: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

6

[1] Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.[2] Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.[3] Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.[4] Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.[5] Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.[6] Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

There will be times when we come to church and we do not feel like worshipping God. Let’s remember that even though we may be tired or troubled, God still deserves our praise. We no not praise the Lord according to circumstances or situations, but we praise Him because He is worthy of our praise.

Ex.: In the book of acts, we can read about Paul and Silas being thrown in prison for preaching the gospel. Even after they were there, they praised God.

Acts 16:23-25

[23]And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

[24] Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

[25] And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

One of the most important lessons we can learn is to praise God every time we go to church. Christians who praise God in all things become strong and immovable in their faith.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Why do you think it would be dangerous to praise God only in the good times?

Sometimes, there is a temptation to wait until you “feel” something to worship God. Always remember that the Bible commands us to praise and worship God. Do not wait until things “get moving”, but invite the presence of God into the service to create an atmosphere where people can receive what they need. People are yearning for a deeper connection to God, and they need to see and feel real, spiritual worship. This is

Page 7: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

7

where we are touched and can realize God is in the service with us. Worshipping in Spirit and in Truth is a must for any Bible-based church.

Worship is not restricted to church services. God’s people should praise Him throughout the day. We can have praise in our hearts and during our daily prayer time.

Psalm 34:1

I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Praising God with Our TestimonyOften during the course of a service, the saints are encouraged to share a testimony of God’s greatness in their lives. Sometimes the pastor will give several minutes for testimonies, and if you have something to share, please remember to:

-Lift up the Lord: Don’t report how hard things have been for you. If you don’t have positive things to say, don’t say it.

-Don’t take up a lot of time: One minute is generally plenty of time to give a good testimony.

-Inspire faith and confidence in God: leave people with the feeling that God is at work in His church today.

-Don’t mention the name of another church or denomination: be discreet because you may offend a visitor of that particular place.

Revelation 12:11

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Giving our testimony will help to make us strong.

The Church – A Place of PrayerIsaiah 56:7

Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

God’s house must be a place of prayer. Prayer will bring the presence of God and His power into the service. A prayerless church is a powerless church. Before the service ever begins, God’s people must pray. Prayer should be made for the pastor, the church leaders, the visitors, the saints, and for every part of the service.

Page 8: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

8

By praying, we let God know that we need Him. A humble heart before the Lord is very pleasing to Him. Without God’s presence, the service will not be a success. Through prayer, God will recognize our reliance on Him, and He will visit us.

2 Chronicles 7:14

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Many churches have prayer rooms designated for before-service prayer. Find out where your pastor would like for you to pray before service and make it your habit to come a half hour or 15 minutes early before each service, making time for this.

Prayer for Healing

An important part of the service is prayer for the sick. It is a comfort to know that God is interested in our physical well-being as well as our spiritual condition.

Isaiah 53:5

But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Before Jesus was crucified, Pilate had Him scourged, or beaten with a whip. This was horrible punishment, and prisoners often died because of this beating. Isaiah prophesied this would happen and told us it would be for our healing. By taking the stripes, Jesus made a way to healed of our sicknesses and infirmities. Also read…

1 Peter 2:24

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

We have a promise in James 5:14 and 15:

14. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:

15. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

If we have faith in God, He will hear us and heal us. It is His desire to deliver us from spiritual and physical problems.

9

Apostolic PreachingWithout a doubt, the most important part of the service is the preaching of the Word of God. Preaching is considered foolish by the world’s standards, but it is through preaching that men hear the Word of God and are brought to salvation. God’s people are also able to grow strong in the Lord and mature as Christians.

Nothing can take the place of powerful, anointed preaching.

1 Corinthians 2:4 (Paul was describing his own preaching)

And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

It is important for us to have great respect for the preaching of God’s Word. We are saved by the Word and judged by the Word. When the preacher preaches, we need to give our full attention. The congregation helps the preacher by getting involved in backing him in words (amen, etc.) and by praising God.

The preaching will call for a response at the end of the message. The response may be repentance or a call for those who have not received the Holy Ghost. It may be a call for the saints to rejoice and worship God. Whatever the mood of the preaching, everyone should try and respond to what they are feeling during an altar call. Keep in mind that the altar is for the saint as well as a guest. By going to the altar to pray, we can get what we need to keep us through the week.

The most important preacher to you is your pastor, though at times, guest speakers will minister. God has designed each local assembly to be headed by a pastor. Your pastor has been chosen by God to lead this group in your community.

Jeremiah 3:15

And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

God has designed the church to be headed by the pastor. The pastor is responsible to deliver to the people the Word that is needed for that time. God-called pastors are equipped by the Spirit to handle the job.

Page 10: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

10

God’s House Needs You!God needs people to have responsibilities in His house. It may be ushering, driving the bus, greeting people at the door, teaching a class, playing an instrument, singing a song, opening and closing the building, running sound equipment, managing a tape or CD ministry, working the nursery, cleaning, or many other jobs. God has something for everything, whether big or small. One of the most important duties that everyone can do is to pray, for without prayer, everything else will have little effect. Pray to find out what God wants you to do. The pastor needs your help. His primary job is to preach. By finding your own ministry in the church, you can be instrumental in helping a soul receive salvation.

Luke 10:2

Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

Matthew 25:21

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

Conduct in the House of GodWe honor God’s house by the way we conduct ourselves. It is important to behave in a manner that will bring glory to the Lord and enhance the message that is preached. Try not to let distractions get in the way of the preaching of the Word.

It is extremely important that the saints of God be unified in their purpose. Through unity, the goals of the church can be realized.

An Apostolic service is one that brings much joy, peace, and fulfillment to every person who takes part. It is important that you realize the plan God laid out in the book of Acts for the very first church to have.

WEEK # 2 FORWARD COURSE>>

Lesson Three- Salvation

Sin and Repentance:

SIN – The Dividing Line

A common question regarding God is this: “Where is God? If there really is a God, why doesn’t He communicate with me? Can’t He hear me? Why doesn’t He answer?”

There is a very real reason why God seems so far away from people.

Isaiah 59:1-2 [1]Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:[2] But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

The dividing factor between God and humans is their sin. Sin always separates. Sinful people cannot approach a holy God because sin is totally against the nature of God.

Psalm 119:137Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments.

Psalm 99:9Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.

What two words are describing the nature of God in those passages?

God’s RIGHTEOUSNESS refers to His justice and that He is morally pure. The HOLINESS of God refers to His separation from sin.

What has happened to mankind? Man’s sin began shortly after creation in the Garden of Eden. God had created a perfect world and placed the man in it to keep it and take care of it. God communed with man daily by talking to him each evening. The only restriction put upon man was that he could not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve could eat of any of the other trees, including the tree of life. Through the influence of the serpent (the devil), Adam and Even ate the forbidden fruit, and sin and death began to work in them. In order to stop the continuation of sin, Adam and Even were not allowed to eat of the tree of life anymore because they were now sinful. They were driven from the garden and the presence of God because of their actions and sinfulness. (Genesis 2:15-3:24)

Page 13: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

13

Genesis 3:24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

The Garden of Eden was guarded so that Adam and Eve could not return to it.

Throughout the Bible, we read stories of how sin separated man from God. Today in our modern society, sin still separates. We see divorce, murder, abuse, torn friendships, and natural disasters happen because of sin.

We must remember that sin could not simply be forgiven and forgotten, but rather sin had to be dealt with. Our great, loving God has dealt with sin to restore man’s

fellowship with God. No, sin could not simply be “swept under the rug”, but because of God’s righteousness, justice had to be paid. The sins of man required a penalty – death. But thanks be to God – He has provided a way of escape by taking upon

Himself the punishment for sin.

Isaiah 53:5-65] But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.[6] All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

When Jesus died on the cross, He paid for our sins. He was sinless, yet He willingly died in our place so justice would be served. God dealt with sin at Calvary so our relationship with Him could be restored. By following God’s plan of salvation, we can identify with Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection to become free from sin and to restore fellowship with God.

According to Romans 5:6, for whom did Christ die? For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

2 Corinthians 5:15And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

Titus 2:14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

REPENTANCE – Changing Direction

Ok, now I know sin separates man from God….now what? The Bible says REPENT.

What is repentance? Those who have been around children know a little bit about it. When children get in trouble for doing something wrong, they generally react in one of two ways. First, a child may try to deny doing wrong or try to cover it up, or he may

Page 14: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

14

profusely apologize and cry in order to keep from being punished. The child is sorry he was caught, but not sorry for the act itself. This is not repentance.

However, another child, when confronted, may burst into tears, realizing how very wrong he was. He may promise never to do it again (with every intention of NOT repeating it). This child is actually sorry for what he has done and he will not do it again. This is true repentance.

When a person repents, he is not only sorry for his sins, but he turns away from them and changes direction. When a person repents, they ask God to take charge of their life – they are dying out (spiritually) to sin or to themselves.

Isaiah 55:7Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Before a man can repent, God must reveal to that person that he is a sinner. Some people have a great deal of difficulty repenting because they see themselves as good people. No matter how good a person may seem, each one of us is alienated from God by our very nature. (Matthew 19:16-17)

According to Romans 3:9-10, how many people are naturally righteous? [9] What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;[10] As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

What is the penalty or end result for sin?

Romans 6:23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Each member of the human family is born in sin (Psalm 51:5). Because God is holy and cannot tolerate sin, sin separates man from God. In order to get man and God back into fellowship, man needed his sin taken away. God provided man with a Savior, Jesus, who died in our place to pay the sin debt.

1 Peter 3:18For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

Repentance is an important step of salvation. It identifies us with the death of Jesus, because when we repent, we die out to our old way of life.

Ezekiel 14:6Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.

15

Luke 13:5I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Acts 17:30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Romans 2:4Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

2 Peter 3:9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

HOW DO WE REPENT?

True Repentance comes as you pray to God. During the church service, an altar call is usually given. This is excellent opportunity to seek the Lord. One should humble themselves as they pray, and He will forgive you and give you the grace to overcome all temptation. Do not be scared or intimidated by the altar. It is a place of deliverance and freedom. Often, another person might pray with you to encourage you and help bring God’s presence near.

John the Baptist was sent by God to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus Christ. He preached repentance to the people (Matthew 3:2-3) and his baptism was one of repentance. Although it is necessary for salvation, repentance is not salvation in itself. Repentance is a preparation for greater things to come. It clears the way for the Lord to come on the scene.

When a person repents, he feels wonderful because the Lord is connected to them and they can understand how much God has done for them. Sometimes, there is a temptation to stop and feel satisfied with this single experience. KEEP GOING! God has just begun His good work in you. It is His plan to Repent, be Baptized in Jesus Name, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. It gets better and better as you go along.

OBEYING THE GOSPEL

In order to know the Lord and identify with Him, we must obey the gospel of Jesus Christ. In 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Paul gives us the definition of the gospel of Christ:

[1] Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;[2] By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

Page 16: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

16

[3] For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;[4] And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Jesus taught about obeying the gospel in John 3:3-5. He called it being born again. The apostles taught us how to obey the gospel, or be born again, in the book of Acts. The Apostle Peter preached the first message given after the outpouring of the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost. He told us how to identify with the gospel of Jesus Christ:

Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

(Acts 2:38)

To be born again, or identify with Jesus, a person must:1. Repent…………………………………..……..........Identify with Jesus’ death2. Be baptized in Jesus’ name in water………….Identify with Jesus’ burial3. Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost……………..Identify with Jesus’ resurrection

Lesson Four: The Blood of Jesus Christ

God had specific reasons for creating the world. He created the heavens and the earth as a manifestation of His glory. Psalms 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God…” All the elements of nature -- the sun, moon, trees of the forest, rain, snow, rivers, streams, hills, mountains, animals, and birds -- shout out praise to the God who made them!

More importantly, God created Adam and Eve in His own image so that He could have a loving, personal relationship for all eternity. God designed humankind with a body, soul, and spirit, possessing mind, emotion, and will with which they can respond to Him freely as Lord of their lives and worship Him out of faith, loyalty, and gratitude. Mankind was created for the purpose of having an intimate relationship with God!

Genesis 2:7-9

7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom He had formed.

9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”

Page 17: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

17

Genesis 2:15-17

15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden you may freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof thou shall surely die.

Life in the Garden of Eden was complete, painless, and peaceful. So what happened? Why, all of a sudden, do we have a world full of sin and sickness? Let’s take a look at Genesis chapter 3 and find out exactly what happened.

Genesis 3:1-11

1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Has God indeed said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of the garden'?"

2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden;

3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.' "

4 Then the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die.

5 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

9 Then the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?"

10 So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."

Page 18: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

18

11 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?"

1. Freedom of choice - God gave man the ability to have his own free will (the ability to choose). We know that true love is only true love when you choose to love someone! This is the reason why God planted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; He wanted Adam to have the choice to obey or disobey Him. God did not want robots or machines that are incapable of loving or feeling. Otherwise, He would have created us that way!

2. Jealousy of the serpent - The serpent was jealous of the freedom that God had given to Adam and Eve. The Bible tells us that Satan is a liar and the father of all lies. Because of the serpent’s jealousy, he tried to make Eve feel underprivileged and get her to focus on what she COULDN’T HAVE rather than all the blessings she did have.

3. The danger of environments - We find the serpent already at the tree of the knowledge of good and evil before Eve ever showed up. It was a big mistake for Eve to visit the forbidden tree in the first place. Many hurtful consequences could be avoided by staying away from certain environments that could lead us to temptation.

4. The weapon of the devil - Satan caused the downfall of the human race through deception. He tried to take the positive word of God, given to Adam, and make it seem negative. He said in verse 1, “Did God say that you shall not eat of every tree of the garden?” Let’s take a look at What God Really Said…

Genesis 2:17

17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

5. God’s viewpoint - God was speaking from a positive viewpoint, and the enemy was trying to trick and deceive Eve into believing that God was being unfair. Eve’s lack of knowledge for what God REALLY said is what affected her when she was face-to-face with temptation.

6. Adam’s mistake - Adam neglected his responsibility to tell Eve the ways of God. The reason Satan was able to deceive Eve was because he knew that she really didn’t know exactly WHAT GOD HAD SAID!

Page 19: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

19

7. The importance of right choices - The key to success in life is based upon our ability to make right choices. It is so important for us to understand that God has given us the freedom to make choices. We don’t have to serve God, obey the Bible, or do what is right. However, let us always remember, that every choice we make has a consequence. Let’s take a few moments and talk about the consequence of sin.

Genesis 3:14-17

14 So the LORD God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life.

15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel."

16 To the woman He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you."

17 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it': "Cursed is the ground for your sake; in toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.

The punishment placed upon man and woman, as well as the effect of sin upon nature, was meant to remind humankind of the terrible consequences of sin. The reason our world is in such a mess today is because Adam and Eve made the choice to rebel against the commandment of God.

Sin, in the beginning, may seem harmless and enticing. However, we must always remember that sin will take you farther than you want to go, cost you more than you want to pay and keep you longer than you intended to stay. Let’s look at some scriptures regarding the consequences of sin.

Romans 6:23

23 For the wages of sin is death...

Page 20: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

20

James 1:15

15 Then when lust hath conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

Isaiah 59:2

2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

We must understand how dangerous sin really is and what it does to our families. The reason why our world is in so much trouble is because of sin. God absolutely hates sin! However, there is good news for those whose lives have been affected by sin. This entire lesson is dedicated to those whose lives have been scarred by the awfulness of sin. There is hope. Jesus Christ went to Calvary and paid the ultimate price for our sins.

Genesis 3:15

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shall bruise His heel.”

This verse contains the first promise of God’s plan of redemption for the world. It predicts the ultimate victory for humanity over Satan. God promised that Jesus Christ would be born of a woman and would be bruised through His crucifixion. Yet, He would rise from the dead to completely destroy Satan, sin, and death, for the sake of the salvation of the human race!

Without a doubt, the blood of Jesus is the most precious gift our heavenly Father has given to His church, yet, so few Christians understand its value and virtue.

In the Bible, the blood was spoken of in two ways -- (1) The Blood Shed and (2) The Blood Sprinkled. Most of us know about the Blood of Jesus that was shed for us. However, few people understand what it means when we refer to the blood being sprinkled upon us.

Page 21: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

21

The first Biblical reference to the sprinkling of blood is in Exodus 12:22. The Israelites were commanded to take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood of a slain lamb, and sprinkle it onto the lintel and two side-posts of their front doors. That night, when the death angel came and saw the blood on the doorposts, he would pass over the house.

Exodus12:12-13

12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt

The blood had to be lifted out of the basin and sprinkled on the door to fulfill its purpose of protection. Please understand, as long as the blood was left in the basin, it was of no effect; it was merely blood that had been shed. The blood had power to save only when it was lifted out of the basin and sprinkled.

This blood in Exodus 12 is a type of the blood of Jesus. The blood that flowed from Calvary was not wasted; it didn’t fall to the ground and disappear. No, that precious blood was collected in a heavenly fountain. When you repent of your sins and get baptized in Jesus’ name, then the blood of Jesus has sprinkled your heart.

When you are sprinkled, you are totally under the protection of Christ’s blood, safeguarded from all destroying powers of Satan. When his forces see the blood of Jesus on your life, they must pass over you. They cannot touch you! So, let’s get to the meat of this Bible lesson.

Page 22: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

1. The Blood Redeems Us From Our Sins

Ephesians 1:7

7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

We are no longer under condemnation or fear. A lot of people have been redeemed and justified by the blood of Jesus – but they don’t know it, because they live in fear and condemnation.

They are like the man who has built up huge debt and can’t pay it. The man’s wealthy boss comes along and pays the bill without telling his employee – then calls him in to give him the good news. The man sits down, is handed the list of debts, and flips through the pages to see the list of bills he has accumulated. He thinks, “I’ll never be able to pay this. They’re going to throw me in jail.” When the CEO sees the man’s fearful countenance, he is perplexed. He says, “Excuse me. Did you look at page one?” The man flips back to the first page, which reads, “PAID IN FULL!”

Many people are just like this man. They don’t know that their sins have been covered, paid in full. We have to enter into that knowledge by faith in order to have the full benefit. WOW! Thanks to the blood of Jesus, we have been redeemed which means, “To buy back, pay off, and free us from all sin.”

Colossians 1:14

14 “In whom we have REDEMPTION THROUGH HIS BLOOD, even the FORGIVENESS OF SINS:”

2. The Blood of Jesus Christ Gives Peace

Colossians 1:20

20 And having made peace through the blood of the Cross.

Why do you think the blood of Jesus gives us peace? Did you know that it is impossible to have peace of mind when you are NOT right with God? The only way to get right with God is to be washed in the blood of Jesus, which will give us complete peace of mind!

Page 23: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

23

Romans 8:6

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

3. The Blood Gives Access Into God’s Presence

Hebrews 10:19

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the Blood of Jesus Christ

Ephesians 2:13

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were afar off are made close by the Blood of Jesus Christ,”

The Bible tells us that in the presence of the Lord there is fullness of Joy. There is NO JOY outside of God’s presence. However, the only way to really get into the POWERFUL PRESENCE OF GOD, is through the blood of Jesus Christ

4. The Blood of Jesus Gives Us Total Victory

Revelation 12:11

11 And they overcame him by the blood of Jesus…

Revelation 1:5

5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in His own blood.

In closing, allow me to remind you that the devil is afraid of the blood of Jesus Christ. The blood of Jesus Christ can cure all depression, guilt, shame, and sin. We can walk in peace of mind through the power of the blood of Jesus. Remember to pray daily that God will wash you thoroughly in His precious blood!

Lesson 5- Water Baptism

Page 25: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

25

Matthew 3:16

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.

Galatians 3:27

27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

In this lesson we are going to answer the following questions about water baptism with the Word of God. (1) What does the Bible say about water baptism? (2) Does it really matter which way we are baptized? (3) How did the Apostles baptize?

In order for us to answer these questions, we need to look and see what the Bible has to say.

1. What Does The Bible Say About Baptism?

John 3:5

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Mark 16:16

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; he that believeth not shall be damned.

Page 26: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

26

1 Peter 3:21

21 The like figure whereunto even baptism does also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:

Acts 2:38

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Romans 6:4

4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Acts 2:41

41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

Acts 8:36

36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?"

Acts 22:16

16 And now why are you waiting? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Acts 10:47-48

47 Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"

Page 27: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

27

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

The Bible is very clear about the importance of water baptism. Jesus said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved.” Water baptism is so important because when we are baptized our sins are washed away through the blood of Jesus.

The next question that we are going to answer in this lesson is, “Should we sprinkle or immerse in water?”

2. The Biblical Formula

“In Jesus’ Name Baptism” or “Father, Son, and Holy Ghost Baptism”

In order for us to fully understand how we should be baptized we must read and understand the Great Commission.

In Jesus’ final words to His followers, He addressed the issue of water baptism. There are three accounts recorded in the Bible about the Great Commission.

Matthew 28:19

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost;

Mark 16:15-16

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

Luke 24:47

47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

The whole key to understanding the Great Commission is the fact that in all three accounts Jesus spoke about baptism. He stressed the fact that it should be done, “IN THE NAME…”

Page 28: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

28

1 Corinthians 14:33

33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

No matter who we are, at different times we play different roles. When we are with our parents, we are their sons or daughters. When we are with our husband or wife, we are their spouses. And when we are with our siblings, we are their brothers or sisters.

However, people who know us call us by our name. Remember that “Father,” “Son,” and “Holy Ghost” are only titles. Even if “Father,” “Son,” and “Holy Ghost” were names, we would still need to be baptized IN JESUS’ NAME!

Philippians 2:9-10

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth:

We need to obey Matthew 28:19 and be baptized IN THE NAME of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost! What is the name of the Father? What is the name of the Son? What is the name of the Holy Ghost? It doesn’t take long to discover that the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is JESUS. The name Jesus appears in the Bible over 983 different times.

Colossians 3:17

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…

John 3:18

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed IN THE NAME of the only begotten Son of God.

Matthew 1:21

21 And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Page 29: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

29

If we pray in Jesus’ name, if we cast out devils in Jesus’ name, and if we pray for the sick in Jesus’ name, then why shouldn’t we baptize IN JESUS’ NAME? The Bible tells us that we need to continue in the Apostles’ doctrine. Therefore we should ask HOW THE APOSTOLES BAPTIZED.

3. How Did The Apostles Baptize?

It is very important for us to understand that Jesus spent three years teaching the twelve Apostles, who were to carry on the message of the gospel. Don’t you think that Jesus made it very clear to them what they were to preach and teach? Remember that the Bible is very clear and doesn’t contradict itself.

Matthew 16:18-19

18 And I say also unto you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven…

Acts 2:36-38

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the Apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:42

42 And they continued steadfastly in the APOSTLES’ DOCTRINE and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”

Acts 8:14-16

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

Page 30: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

30

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)”

Acts 10:1-6

1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called

the Italian Regiment,

2 A devout man, and one that feared God with his entire house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.

3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do."

Acts 10:44-48

44 While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

Page 31: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

31

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.

Acts 19:1-5

1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 He said unto them, have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, we have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 And he said unto them, unto what then were ye baptized? And they said Unto John's baptism.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Nowhere in God’s Word will you ever read where someone was ever baptized in the titles “Father,” “Son,” and “Holy Ghost.” There would not be a problem baptizing in the titles “Father,” “Son,” and “Holy Ghost” if it lined up with the Word of God. We have a total of eight scriptures that support the doctrine of Jesus name baptism and not one for the other. There are no scriptures that support being baptized in the titles.

OTHER SCRIPTURES: Matthew 28:19 Luke 24:47 Acts 2:38 Acts 4:12 Acts 8:16 Acts 10:48 Acts 19:5 Colossians 3:17

In the book of Acts chapter 2 is the beginning of the church, and as you read the book of Acts, you will find, the early church always baptized in Jesus’ name.

Romans 14:10

10 …for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

Every man will be judged according to the Word of God. Are you certain that you have been baptized in Jesus’ name for the remission of your sins? If you are unsure, it is always wise to be safe and make sure you are baptized in Jesus name. Please don’t allow the devil to deceive you into believing that this doesn’t matter or it is irrelevant to salvation.

Lesson Six- Power of the Holy Ghost

In this lesson we will learn that the Holy Ghost is promised to us, what the Holy Ghost will do for us, how to know when we have received the Holy Ghost, and how to receive the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is mentioned in the Bible over 90 different times. As we study this lesson on the Holy Ghost, you will have a greater understanding of the purpose of the Holy Ghost in our lives.

Romans 5:5

5 because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Romans 14:17

14 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”

33

Acts 1:8

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses.

Romans 15:13

13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

1 Corinthians 6:19

19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you?

2 Timothy 1:14

14 That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwells in us.

John 20:19-22

19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you."

20 Now when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.

21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."

22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

34

Joel 2:28

28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Matthew 3:11

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Luke 11:13

13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

Matthew 7:7-8

7Ask and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you:

8 For every one that asks will receive and he that is seeking will find it.

John 7:37-39

37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

38 He that believes on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

John 14:18, 26

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you!

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Page 35: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

35

Luke 24:49

49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

Acts 1:4-5

4 And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

2 Peter 3:9

9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Acts 2:33

33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost.

It is easy to accept the fact that God has promised us the Holy Ghost. There is scripture after scripture that reveals to us that the Holy Ghost is a promise and it is for everyone to receive. Some have asked if we really need to receive the Holy Ghost. Yes, we DO NEED the Holy Ghost! The Holy Ghost saves us and gives us the power we need to walk in the Spirit, so we can overcome sin!

Page 36: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

36

Romans 8:6-9

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

John 3:5

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily; I say unto thee, except a man is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Because of our sins, we are spiritually dead! We need the Holy Ghost to give life to us. Notice in Romans 8 Paul says, “They that are in the flesh cannot please God.” Then he said, “You are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, IF the Spirit of God dwell in you!” They that are in the flesh cannot please God; therefore, we need the Holy Ghost to save us from our sins and fleshly mindsets. Remember, to be carnally minded is death, but to spiritually minded is peace. The Holy Ghost will give us the ability to have a Spiritual mind.

Acts 8:5-8

5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

6 And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spoke, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did.

7 For unclean spirits, crying with loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them: and many taken with palsies, and that were lame, were healed.

8 And there was great joy in that city.

Acts 8:12-17

12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

Page 37: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

37

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

When Philip went to Samaria, he preached to them about Jesus Christ, and the Bible says, “THEY BELIEVED!” They had become devout believers in Jesus and were baptized. When the Apostles heard that Samaria had received the Word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. Why? They wanted to make sure they received the Holy Ghost. It is possible to be a believer in Jesus and still not have the Holy Ghost. We also need the Holy Ghost, because the Holy Ghost gives us joy and peace.

Galatians 5:22

Page 38: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

38

22 But the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.

1. Love – “Affectionate concern for the well-being of others.”2. Joy – “Great delight, happiness, and display of glad feeling.”3. Peace – “Freedom from anxiety, stress, or mental disturbance.”4. Long-suffering – “Patient endurance of troubles or problems.”5. Gentleness – “Kindness, politeness, courteousness, honorableness, and

respectability.”6. Goodness – “Moral excellence and virtue; generosity.”7. Faith – “Confidence of trust in someone and belief in God.”8. Meekness – “Humility, submissiveness, and gentleness.”9. Temperance – “Moderation, self-control, and total abstinence from alcoholic

beverages.”

At what point do we receive the Holy Ghost? How will we know when we have received the Holy Ghost? Will we have a good feeling? Does it happen right when we believe in Christ? Let’s look in the book of Acts and read how they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:1-4

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Page 39: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

39

Acts 10:1-6

1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment.

2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always.

5. And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

6 He lodges with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what you must do.

Acts 10:44-46

44 While Peter yet spoke these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

How do we know that the Gentiles received the Holy Ghost? For they heard them speak with tongues!

Page 40: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

40

Acts 19:1-6

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied.

These men were believers and disciples of Jesus, yet they still had NEVER HEARD about the Holy Ghost before. How do we know they received the Holy Ghost? They spoke with tongues!

Page 41: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

41

Mark 16:17

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

When God fills you with the Holy Ghost, you will know it, and there will be NO DOUBT. Speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost!

1 Corinthians 14:4

4 He that speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself.

Lesson 8- It’s My Responsibility

Attitude“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company…a church…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a CHOICE every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. . . we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude . . . I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to

Page 47: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

it. And so it is with you….we are in charge of our ATTITUDES.”

Charles Swindoll

Qualities of A Healthy ChurchDynamics of Church Growth by Ron Jenson and Jim Stevens      Patterned After Jesus Christ. A healthy church has a Christ-likeness in both behavior and character. They love what He loves. Their priorities are His priorities. They take the term "ambassadors" in the fullest sense.

Desire To Grow. A healthy church desires to grow. Unfortunately, not all churches are healthy. Some feel that as they grow they will loose their intimacy of fellowship, standards, position, etc. Such feelings are immature and certainly not Christ like.

Proper Pastoral Role. A healthy church sees the pastor, not as a "jack of all trades," but as an "leader-enabler." His roll is not to perform all work, but to effectively develop others for leadership and service unto Jesus Christ.

High Percent of Involvement. A healthy church is an active church. A high percentage, at least 70% of the members, are actively involved in some form of ministry on a consistent basis. The church grows as each part of the body does it's work.

Willing To Pay The Price. A healthy church will gladly pay the price that growth requires-in money, time, and facility development. Their attitude is "we will do whatever is necessary, within biblical guidelines, to grow."

Prays Much. A healthy church is a praying church. Prayer and fasting has a priority in the life of the pastor. This priority is then reflected in the people. Fervent prayer and heartfelt worship are found in every service. Instead of only being "air-conditioned" the church is "prayer-conditioned."

Page 48: The Bible – God’s Words for Man  · Web view1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, 2 A devout man, and one

48

Focuses On Priorities. A healthy church isn't interested in simply "busy," but in being "productive." Priorities are established within each department and within the church as a whole. They then work on these with dogged determination.
