Bethany Children’s Home History Lesson

7,000 + = SUCCESS BCH has helped more than 7000 youth face the world with confidence & direct their own futures productively. Our alumni have made contributions to their communities, business, law, medicine, education, and the arts.

Reverend Emanuel and Christiane Boehringer founded the Orphan’s Home of the Shepherd of the Lambs, which became Bethany Children’s Home and has

now been providing care and nurturance to boys and girls for 151 years.

On September 21, 1863, Rev. Boehringer and his wife Christiane, opened their home at 702 Morris Street southwark, Philadelphia, to orphaned children.

Caroline Engel, age 6, was the first to enter the home.

In the summer of 1864, the orphans moved to their own home in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia. The home was bought with the financial help of 50 + sponsors. In 1867, the Womelsdorf property was purchased and the home

moved on October 1st.

In 1873, the name was changed to Bethany Orphans Home until another final change in 1958 to Bethany Children’s Home.
