Rabbi Ari Dembitzer Rabbi
Purim is just around the corner! It is time to plan our costumes, prepare our gift baskets, and working on our dance moves. The Talmud tells us to increase in joy as we approach this holy holiday. We are supposed to express this joy in acts of kindness as this is the theme of the holiday and of the month of Adar as we start it off with the giving of the "Shekalim".
The key to our joy is to realize that we have a purpose in this world beyond ourselves. Whether its our family, our friends, our SHUL, our community or our world. We start to look out as opposed to looking in.
We receive the Torah on Purim anew, this time from love and joy. We accept our role to give and improve the world. This is the biggest source of joy.
May we all have a month of value, purpose, giving, living and finally a month of joy!
About the aover: Purim is March and ! Look at the schedule and make your plans to attend Purim happenings at Beth )srael.
uith the arrival of the month of Adar, one's happiness increases. The month of Adar is a particularly joyous one because the festival of Purim takes place in that month. )t is also the month that precedes Nissan, the month in which the holiday of Passover occurs.
Rabbi Yaakov Weiss Assistant Rabbi
We find ourselves right now in the middle of a number of Torah portions that are related to the construction of the Mishkan (Tabernacle) and the clothing of the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) and the fellow priests.
In a few weeks we will also begin the third book of the Chumash, Vayikra. It is also known as Torat Kohanim (the laws of the Priests). This is because most of the book of Vayikra focuses on the laws of the specific sacrifices and the duties of the Kohanim in the Temple.
However, there is another component to the book of Vayikra. A Kohen is encouraged and told to live up an appropriate standard dictated by the Torah. It is not only the sacrifices that they bring to the Temple but everything else they do in their lives as well.
We are told that we are a Mamlechet Kohanim ve-Goy Kadosh—a nation of priests and holy nation. As much as the Kohen—descendants of Aharon—have a unique responsibility in the Temple, we as a Jewish people have a similar responsibility to uphold the ideals and lessons of the Torah.

Passover Maot Chitim Fund
One of the basic preparations for Passover is to ensure that every Jew has the
financial ability “to make Pesach.” As you prepare for your Seders, it is also time to
open your hearts and to support those in need. Through the Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund, money is discreetly distributed to the needy to provide support during the
holiday and throughout the year. If you would like to be included, please send your
check to the synagogue office, payable to Beth Israel.
A full Passover schedule will be printed in the April bulletin.
DELEGATION OF POWER FOR SALE OF CHAMETZ
Know that I, the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Yaakov Weiss to act in my place
and stead, and on my behalf to sell all chametz possessed by me (knowingly or unknowingly), as
defined by Torah and Rabbinic Law (e.g. chametz, possible chametz and all kinds of chametz
mixtures). And to lease all places wherein the chametz owned by me may be found, wherever it

This general authorization is made a part of this agreement. Also, I do hereby give the said Rabbi
Yaakov Weiss full power and authority to appoint a substitute in his stead with full power to sell
and to lease as provided herein. The above given power is in conformity with all Torah, Rabbinical
regulations and laws, and also in accordance with laws of the State of Nebraska and of the United
States. And to this I hereby affix my signature on the _____ day of _____________, 2016.

Mechirat Chametz—Selling Chametz
It is preferable to either eat or give away all chametz in one’s house prior to Pesach. If this is not possible, then the chametz can be sold before Pesach to a non-Jew (see contract above).
The sold Chametz is the non-Jew's property until after Passover ends and must be secured
until after Passover when the Rabbi repurchases it for the community. It should be stored
away in a manner in which the non-Jew would have access to it. Unsold Chametz which
remained in a Jew's possession during Passover may not be used even after Passover ends. If
you have any questions, call Rabbi Ari or Rabbi Weiss.
Rabbi Ari and Rabbi Weiss will be available in the office for the Sale of Chametz after minyan
each day the week prior to Pesach or by appointment. You are welcome to either meet with
them, mail, fax (402-556-5759), or email your form ([email protected]).
The signed form must be received in the synagogue office
