IntroductionVerizon FiOS (fiber optic service) is the world’s leading fiber to the premises (FTTP) service, which sets a new performance standard for telecommunications services.

Developed and first implemented in 2004, FiOS outweighs traditional copper cable in virtually all aspects. FiOS’s speed, reliability, quality and easy installation/upgrade have changed the way businesses and their customers communicate throughout the U.S. The service now covers millions of homes and businesses in over 20 cities around the country, such as Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida.

As the service spreads to more and more cities and regions, many business owners are making the switch from their traditional coaxial Internet/cable to FiOS. However, is the service really that much better? Verizon FiOS is the largest 100% fiber optics service in the country - and there’s a reason why.

This guide serves as an outline for the benefits of FiOS from a professional lens; the service’s key features and the ways those features can help small/medium businesses achieve new success.

SpeedIn areas with FiOS availability, Verizon provides the fastest and most reliable Internet service for in the home and at the office. The fiber optic lines Verizon are made of run underground, and transmit information more efficiently than coaxial copper cables. With download and upload speeds of up to 250 Mbps, Verizon FiOS is the fastest Internet service currently on the market. For many businesses, this speed is critical to finding and growing organizational success.

Verizon offers tiered speed packages, which you can choose or upgrade to suit your business’s need. 150 Mbps and 250 Mbps speeds are best for in-office use, and allow companies to more effectively work and collaborate online. These high speeds (the fastest in the industry, more than 20x comparable coaxial speed packages) can support a range of devices and handle many users/devices at one time.

For professional purposes, FiOS’s incredible speeds mean more than easy downloads and a quick Internet connection; high speed also benefits cloud-based Voice over IP (VoIP) phone systems. Calls over the FiOS network features almost zero latency, allowing businesses and contact centers to communicate in real-time with customers, as if phone users were standing in the same room.

When it comes to speed and bandwidth efficiency, FiOS beats all other cable, wireless and dish systems available.

ReliabilityThe most valuable aspect of Verizon’s FiOS service isn’t just that it’s the fastest such service available, but it’s also the most reliable. Fiber optic lines, which are made of glass, are less susceptible to electrical damage than comparable coaxial lines, and are located underground - thus, they are at less risk than standard lines in hurricanes, fires and other disasters.

For growing businesses and contact centers, this means no more dropped calls, routing errors or down-time. Business doesn’t stop when the power goes out; FiOS helps keep operations going and phone lines active despite adverse circumstances.

If you’ve ever been a part of or watched a live webinar, you know that hassles that technical difficulty and slow Internet can cause. FiOS offers consistent Internet speed at all times of the day, whether you’re streaming a live feed or hosting one yourself.

FiOS lines are always professionally installed by Verizon, and FiOS Internet and additional services are backed with 24/7 support. Short-term FiOS contracts, paired with a range of package options and prices, make it easy for businesses to customize their Internet service to suit demand.

High bandwidth capacity, minimal compression and exceptional download speeds give FiOS the performance edge over any other telecommunications service available. Verizon’s business packages offer unlimited nationwide calling and additional basic lines for processing credit card information and rollover calls.

QualityFiOS Internet has the #1 rated service quality for Internet services in the US, as identified in the 2015 American Customer Satisfaction Index. With FiOS Internet, businesses with Internet phone systems can experience 99.9% call clarity and reliability, and connection strength that well surpasses that of standard cable.

In the professional world, the FiOS Internet service is ideal for transferring large amounts of communications data, like multi-party conferences and customer communication, which can be muddled by the hardware of yesterday.

The glass strands within fiber optic lines transmit information at almost the speed of light, without detracting from quality or performance the way other cable-based systems might. FiOS Quantum Internet (Verizon’s 250 Mbps service) can feature an almost limitless amount of devices, all actively sending and receiving data in any form.

FiOS provides the bandwidth and connection strength small businesses need when scaling and growing their organization. Even FiOS’s 75 Mbps Internet speed is many times faster and more well-supported than standard cable.

Flexibility/UpgradingVerizon’s FiOS service is very popular among small businesses and startups due largely to its speed and resilience; however, it’s at least in part due to its flexibility. FiOS Internet services come at a range of speeds and performance specs, and in various bundle deals, so potential users can find the right service for their needs on one convenient bill.

FiOS Internet (at various speeds) services can be swapped as needed to suit the user. The service puts control in the hands of its customers, allowing them to integrate an Internet service that not only meets their needs, but also exceeds them.

For ongoing support, fiber optic lines are much easier and more affordable to maintain than traditional cable lines - cable lines that are also more susceptible to damage.

Potential DrawbacksEverything has its drawbacks, and this is true for FiOS as it is for any other telecommunications service. For most users, limited availability is the biggest weakness of Verizon’s FiOS service in its current form. As of 2015, Verizon FiOS is only available in 13 states, including Texas, Florida, California and several others in the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic U.S. Even in areas with FiOS, certain packages are not always available, such as the Quantum 250/250 Mbps service.

In these select areas, however, the FiOS service availability has spread to over 18 million homes and businesses. FiOS Internet features a growing subscriber base of over 6.75 million customers - a number that will only go higher as more businesses and home users make the switch from cable.

Another drawback to Verizon’s FiOS Internet services is, of course, the price tag associated with some of the higher end packages. For instance, the Quantum 250/250 comes at a greater price than standard coaxial Internet. While price isn’t an issue for businesses that need 250 Mbps download/upload speeds, it can be for smaller organizations that aren’t quite ready to invest in the fastest service possible.

Fortunately, the 75/75 and 150/150 Mbps are much more affordable plans, and users can choose from a number of Internet packages or even create their own bundle to receive the right services at the right scope.

These drawbacks are more inconveniences than true problems; the availability issue will resolve itself with time, as more cities and users switch from standard cable to FiOS, and pricing is relative to what users want out of their service.

Verizon FiOS is quickly becoming the quality standard for business Internet. With unmatched speed, reliability, quality and simple maintenance, it’s no wonder that so many businesses in FiOS-available areas make the switch from their conventional cable service.

Upgrading to FiOSVerizon FiOS is quickly becoming the quality standard for business Internet. With unmatched speed, reliability, quality and simple maintenance, it’s no wonder that so many businesses in FiOS-available areas make the switch from their conventional cable service.

Within the FiOS service area, FiOS has become a core part of organizations large and small. Contact centers with VoIP phone systems, particularly, have much to gain by upgrading their Internet to FiOS, which offers voice clarity and low latency that can’t be matched by cable Internet.

FiOS blows traditional cable out of the water on virtually all fronts. It comes at a higher price tag, of course, but the investment is worth it - especially for small or growing businesses. Before you cancel your current Internet service and switch over to FiOS, there’s a few things you should remember to do first:

• For starters, make sure that FiOS is even available in your area. Currently, coverage includes specific cities in 13 states, mostly on the eastern coast.

• If FiOS is available in your area, browse service plans and bundles to find the right plan for your organization. Not all businesses need 250 Mbps upload speeds; tailor your solution around what you need, and you can avoid overpaying for Internet services.

If you’re within FiOS coverage and know what plan/service speed is best for your business, consider reaching out to telecommunications providers in your area. These are agencies that bundle things like Verizon-provided FiOS, VoIP phone systems and contact center support under one monthly bill.

A dedicated telecommunications partner can not only help you get a good deal on FiOS and other cloud-based communications systems, but also make sure you use that tech the right way for your business.
