3pm Exit Gates onto Forest Road

There have been new extended footpath barriers constructed along Forest Road outside the school fence and on the other side of the road. To attempt to relieve the congestion in the afternoons at Gate 4 nearest the lights, we are going to trial also opening Gate 3, which is in front of the Belltower building. This trial will begin from Tuesday 12th June for the remainder of the term. Students and their parents or carers who cross the road at the lights will continue to exit the school through Gate 4. See below: Students and their parents or carers who walk along the footpath on Forest Road on the school side, towards Hurstville will exit from Gate 3. See below: Our main concern is the safety of our students. If we observe students or parents crossing Forest Road at any other place other than the lights, we will have to revert back to having Gate 4 as the only exit gate. We welcome any feedback from parents regarding this.

Transforming Schools

By 2031 our Kindergarten students will emerge from the other end of the education system into a world with widespread autonomous transport, artificial intelligence embedded in most things, healthcare that will make present approaches look medieval, and radically changed ways of working, doing business and being a citizen.

Michael Anderson, co-author of the book ‘Transforming Schools’ asks. “Are the roughly 10,000 hours students spend at school good value and are they preparing our young people for this brave new world or do we need to rethink this precious resource? And if we do have the courage to change, how might transformation even be possible when the shape of the future is uncertain? If we want to avoid our schools becoming museums – packed with approaches from the teaching

past – what changes can we make?’

As part of Hurstville Public Schools journey with our academic partners from the Transforming Schools Team, our teachers are working collaboratively to explicitly teach and embed creativity,

collaboration, critical reflection and communication (the 4Cs) across ages and subjects.

In the classroom this shifts learning from being only about content delivery to making subjects flexible, dynamic and interconnected. Simultaneously, teachers are working to build learning dispositions such as grit, teamwork and influence that equip students to deal with complex

problems in learning and life.

Michael Anderson says “In a world where knowledge is readily accessible, schools cannot rely on being dispensers of knowledge. Students need to verify, interpret, adapt, apply, synthesise and

create knowledge. Learning dispositions make this achievable for all students.”

This week staff have been looking at the Learning Disposition Wheel:

The wheel is a diagnostic tool that

provides teachers, students and

parents with a common language

to help develop 21st Century

Learners. It shows all of the

competencies required by

learners in order to be successful

self-regulated learners.

We look forward to sharing our

experiences with the wider

community during Education Week

in Term 3. This is a very exciting

time for teachers at Hurstville Public School. The school has invested a large amount of time and

resources into bringing our whole teaching staff on board this transformative journey.

Lost Property

The office has a building collection of wallets, phones and watches that have been handed in as

lost property. If you or your children have lost any of these items at school please come to the

office and see if we have them.

Early Stage 1-Kindergarten

This term Kindergarten have been busy learning about different objects, how they look and feel

and what they are made of.

KE have had lots of fun exploring different materials. They were challenged to use their imagination

and creativity to design their own object using paper and wood.

Here are some photos of KE’S unique creations.

Martin and Mabel both used their materials and imagination to create robots.

Year 2 News

Students in Year 2 have been involved with Robotics in the Connected Classroom using Lego Education, Lego WeDo and IPads. These activities will assist the student’s development with their ability to: • Investigate with ICT • Create with ICT • Communicate with ICT • Manage and Operate with ICT

I like Robotics because I can be creative and I can make stuff move without touching it. I can make different types of Lego also I can learn how to make robots. Zain 2E I like Robotics because it was fun and we created with Lego and we used the iPad to make things move. It was a lot of fun. Phoebe 2E

Stage 2

Year 3 have been enjoying their cricket sessions during sport time. They have focused on catching, batting and some fielding skills. The coaches have provided lots of fun games and are already getting to know the students’ level of skills. There are still two weeks left of these cricket sessions. We hope that our students will be better skilled to try out for PSSA teams next year.

Stage 2 Teachers Stage 2 EAL/D withdrawal programs

This term, some students from Year 3 and 4 are working with Mrs Singh for extra support with their language and literacy development in English. This New Arrivals group has been working on the rich text ‘Possum Magic’ and engaging in reading comprehension, communicative games and writing activities. At the end of this term, this Stage 2 group of students will collaboratively create a multimodal text using images and written and oral language. They will be using critical and creative thinking skills to communicate their interpretations of Possum Magic. Here are the students working on a communicative activity:

Two small groups of Year 4 students have also been working on developing their knowledge and skills in Writing with Mrs Singh. In these sessions, there is a lot of collaborative brainstorming, planning and oral drafting of persuasive sentences. As a result, students are feeling supported and confident to compose some amazing pieces of persuasive writing. Here are some examples -

Plastic Pollution in the Ocean: What Do Kids Think?

The oceans hold about 96.5% of all of Earth’s water and is one of the most amazing places on earth!

Bursting with wildlife and teeming with mysteries to be solved, we’ve still only explored a tiny fraction.

However, there is a big problem we’ve been learning about.

“Did you know that plastic cannot decompose? This means every plastic

material you have ever used, including the first straw you used is still out

there. Every day, 500 million straws are used in the world. These could wrap

around the Earth four times! Around 80% of people litter plastic, including

straws. These are then swept into the drainage system by rain and washed

into the ocean.” Lachlan N.

“Marine life creatures (birds, jellyfish, turtles) are at risk. They may mistake plastic for food

and eat it. If you go to the beach, there is already a huge amount of rubbish, but if you went

underwater, you could see a devastating amount of plastic floating

around. Turtles’ favourite food is jellyfish and they often mistake

plastic bags for food, so they choke to death. Did you know that

the seafood you eat could contain plastic in it.” Isabella Z.

“How would you feel if you were a turtle living is a mysterious ocean with plastic surrounding

you? It is a horrible but true fact, that each year about 8 million tons of plastic appear in our

oceans. We need to do something about it! Don’t use single use bags, cups or bottles, but use

Page 9: The Belltower - hurstville-p.schools.nsw.gov.au

The Belltower 9

reusable ones, it’s as easy as that. Did you know that more that 85% of plastic in the ocean

is microplastic? The Australian government should ban micropalstic use altogether.” Rihanna T.

“Our planet is precious. It sustains us and it is our home. With population growth and the

convenience of plastic products, our planet is choking. The facts and data are horrifying. Plastic

pollution needs to be stopped!” Kathleen M.

Student Representative Council

On Wednesday 20th June, the SRC are holding a sports-themed fundraiser day – “Be Sporty Day”, in

conjunction with the Premiers Sporting Challenge. Students across K-6 are currently participating in the

Challenge each week. The Premiers Sporting Challenge promotes the importance of a healthy and active

lifestyle. Students and teachers are encouraged to dress up as their favourite sports star or wear their sportiest

clothing on the day, and bring a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go to the Stewart House charity

organisation, which provides quality health, education and support for struggling students in NSW and ACT

school to improve their self-esteem, resilience and general well-being.

In addition, there will be a Teachers Vs Year 6 Students’ Newcomb Ball competition during recess and

lunch, which is a variation of volleyball. All Hurstville Public School students will be encouraged to watch

the teachers and students get active.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone in their sportiest clothing!

Premier’s Sporting Challenge 2018

Dear Parents/Carers,

Our school has registered to participate in the 2018 NSW Premier’s Primary School Sport Challenge.

The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport, games and physical activity - and

to have more students, more active, more often!

Over the ten week period in Terms 2 & 3, the whole school will be monitoring physical activity we do during

class time, at recess and lunch as well as during sport. What we do outside school hours will also count towards

the Challenge award for our class.

Students in Years 3-6 will be issued with a Challenge log book to record their physical activity.

Your support in encouraging your children to be physically active before and after school as well as on weekends

will encourage them to develop healthy lifestyle habits. You may like to join us in this venture by organising

family activities such as walking, swimming and cycling.

Each student completing the Challenge will receive a personalised certificate signed by the Premier of NSW.

Physical activity is valued for its physical, social and emotional benefits. It also helps young people to develop

communication skills, confidence and resilience while having fun with family and friends.

We look forward to working with you to support the healthy growth and development of your child.

Yours sincerely,

Kate Koch

Debating News

Sydney Primary Schools Debating This week our Hurstville Public School debating team competed against Carlton Public School ‘A’ for Round 2 of the Sydney Primary School’s Debating Competition. Leading up to the debate, all team members diligently planned, researched and practised to ready themselves. Being only their second debate of the competition, all team members were a little nervous, and very excited by the challenge. However, their effort during training sessions at school and at home, certainly made the students appear to have debated many times before. Hurstville A’s First Speaker opened strongly with their team’s arguments and maintained a confident, affirmative position on the topic:- ‘Schools should start the day with a 30 minute exercise class’. Carlton ‘A’

were able to make some very strong points in the negative position. As the Adjudicator later commented, our team just had the stronger rebuttals. Congratulations Daniel, Justin, Daria and Chaimy. Our next debate will be held at Baldface Public School on Monday 18th June at 1.30pm. As we are the away team, our teams will be taking the ‘Negative’ position on the day. Parents of the team members, are very welcome to attend the debate. Lunchtime training session is on Thursday each week. Ms Rourke (Debating Coach)

TECHNOLOGY: Mrs Zeritis

Year 6 students entered a new arena for learning when they stepped into the Textiles room this week for their lesson. The lesson was designed to introduce student to fabric decoration techniques used in the textiles industry.

All students were given a calico bag and were instructed on how to prepare the bag for the tie dying process, which it was going to undergo. The girls enthusiastically tied elastic bands onto their bags to create areas where dye would not penetrate, and thereby make a design on the bag.

All students worked cooperatively and were willing to be given responsibilities around the various workstations that had been set up in the classroom.

I have no doubt that the girls are eagerly awaiting next week’s lesson as this will involve them untying their elastics and viewing the designs they created on their bags.

SCIENCE: Mr. Adams – A flaming good time!

This week Primary Links students continued to work

towards their Bunsen burner license.

Students revised the names of the parts of the

Bunsen burner and the procedure for lighting the burner. Students

then used their senses to make observations and they listed differences between the yellow and blue

flame.

Having made some excellent predictions, students

were able to successfully determine by experiment

that the blue flame is hottest and they gave reasons

why the yellow flame is also called the safety flame.

Students worked competently and safely in their laboratory.

Next week students will determine, by experiment, which part of the blue flame is hottest.

ENGLISH: Mr Morgan

Keeping their eyes on the horizon and the wind at their backs, our intrepid English explorers set sail across

the murky waters of metaphor and on toward the shadowy realm of narrative storytelling.

Discussing the myriad reasons for which stories are told and the exciting new forms these stories can

take, our enthusiastic crew were charged with the task of reinterpreting common experiences in new and

exciting ways in the hope of encouraging a reinvigoration of their own creative writing; making the

ordinary extraordinary.

Focusing their attention upon the multi-sensory experience of consuming small morsels of candy, the

students discovered that even the most seemingly insignificant or common experience may be

reimagined, imbued with fresh meaning and described anew.

What an exciting and delicious week!

MATHEMATICS: Ms Kimber

This week’s lesson involved using a grid reference activity to pinpoint locations on a number plane. Grid

referencing gives a letter then a number; the letter being along the horizontal axis (the top and bottom)

and the number on the vertical axis, which are the two sides. A street map uses grid co-ordinates to specify

the locations of streets and points of interest.

The Year 6 students thoroughly enjoyed this activity.

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS: Miss Zeritis

Talent was glowing through this week in Visual Arts!

This was our first time using correct proportions and our drawing skills were taken to the next level. Did

you know your eyes are half way down your head? And your mouth is as wide as the space between

your pupils? Or that you can fit 5 eyes across your face? Well, we do now and we can draw much more

accurate portraits with our new knowledge of realistic size and position of facial features! We have also

improved our spatial estimation skills. We put a lot of effort into these drawings and demonstrated a

fantastic attitude to learning new skills.
