‘Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.’

Frida Kahlo

Dear Gazette readers,

During the holiday season we said goodbye to many BLAS members. Going back or moving to another country also means finding a new equilibrium. The scenery might have changed but we are sure the friendships will last. At the same time new people have moved to the red dot and they are probably curious about this beautiful country, its people and culture.

New BLAS teams are formed, new ideas are coming together, new approaches will be tried. The Gazette counts on volunteers’ contributions. Writing in your mother tongue, French or Dutch will certainly be an encouragement.Annually recurring events will be mentioned and the matching article which has appeared in a previous edition will be easily accessible on the BLAS website. We hope you get inspired by one of our Belgian volunteer guides at the Asian Civilisations Museum and we’ll take you to some lovely places such as Laos and Australia. While Singapore may just be a little red dot, the island is buzzing with new attractions and fun things to do, witness the changes about to come ...

For those who will not return home at the end of the year, Singapore will be full of fun activities and you can start dreaming of the end of the year BLAS party. Until then the new BLAS team is looking forward to meet new and familiar faces at the get together drinks, lunches, sportive, cultural activities and the brand new book club.

We hope you enjoy reading all the Gazette editions!

PRESIDENT'S CORNER EMBASSY'S CORNERWarm welcome to Andy Detaille, Ambassador of Belgium

Dear BLAS friends

Welcome back after a long, and hopefully reinvigorating summer break! A warm welcome also to those newly arrived in Singapore, in particular to our new Ambassador, H.E. Mr. Andy Detaille, and his family. May you all soon find a new home-away-from-home and meet new friends so as to make your Singapore stay a memorable one.

A brand-new very promising BLAS year with plenty of activities lies ahead of us. Allow me to take this opportunity to re-outline BLAS for you.

ITS PEOPLEAt the very heart of BLAS lie you. Yes, you! Not only would BLAS not exist without you, it is also you who can decide which activities are organised! How? By actively participating, by showing your appreciation and support, by positively communicating, by simply staying or becoming a member … The BLAS committee - no less than 11 enthusiastic people, who introduce themselves to you further on - can then respond to what they feel lives amongst our vibrant community and adjust its course accordingly. Next to the committee, there are many more people who have already committed to give some of their time and talents to BLAS. We will for sure also introduce them to you in due time.

ITS EVENTSWith new people also come new ideas. Next to the traditional already proven beloved events, there will be some new ones. Avid readers will be pleased to hear about the launch of a monthly book club, and those who like to hit a ball, may want to join our weekly Friday evening social tennis!

On top of that we would like to launch what I call the more ‘spontaneous’ events: if you have an idea (an interesting exposition that you’ve bumped into; a movie that you would like to see; a walk that you would like to share; a whiskey that you would like to taste ...) Let us know and we will let the BLAS community know!

ITS CHANNELS Of COMMuNICATIONFor communication we use several channels: our website (blas.org.sg) and Facebook page being the most important ones, next to our regular newsletter through email. At the time of writing, we are also working to further enhance our already attractive website by incorporating some EventBank software, which will make it possible for you amongst other things to install a BLAS app on your mobile. How cool is that?

ITS MEMBERSHIP fEESBLAS membership fees are too expensive, are they? Sensible people nowadays do rightfully ask themselves: ‘What is in it for me?’ I could write a whole page about the benefits of becoming a member but let me keep it rational and purely mathematical: ‘BLAS gives back to its members.’ We promise that, budget allowing, every event will be presented to our members below actual cost. As much as BLAS cannot exist without you, it cannot survive without your membership contribution.

Looking forward to meeting you in person at one of our events!

Dear friends,

After four wonderful years in Singapore, we are heading back to Belgium. It is time to say our goodbyes. It seems only yesterday that we arrived in tropical Singapore (30°C all year round). It was the day after the Formula 1 race in September 2013. F1 at night in the middle of the city, really? Really, and there were to be many more surprises (the plumber showing up 1 day earlier than promised, for

Andy DetailleH.E. The Ambassador of Belgium

Hello everyone,

Vittoria, my wife, Adriano and Sibilla, my two children and I arrived in Singapore on July 29th from Kuwait. Not only are we happy to be out of the heat – Singapore’s temperatures feel like spring to us – but we are also delighted to see that Belgium is very much present in Singapore. We are present through the embassy, through our companies, through our chamber of commerce but also very much through BLAS.

Life is not made out of work alone and it is heartwarming to see how many of you are dedicating your free time to keep our

community engaged and vibrant. Vittoria and I want to expressly congratulate you for a job well done and we want to assure you of the continued support of the Embassy. We look forward to meeting you all at one of the upcoming BLAS events. Kind regards,Andy Detaille

instance). We have seen many changes happening in Singapore.Quite literally, from the windows of my office. First, Gardens by the Bay disappeared from sight; then Tanjong Pagar port stopped functioning. Singapore seems to be constantly preparing for the future: the port moving to the West, CBD expanding and getting a twin sister in Jurong … Even the Embassy building is following suit: while writing this, I can hear the persistent drilling at the entrance.

During our term we have seen the number of Belgians increase from

around 1200 to more than 1650. New arrivals can count on a warm welcome by BLAS. We have had the pleasure of interacting with the BLAS team on several occasions. We keep particularly fond memories of the Easter egg hunt at the residence. We wish BLAS and its members all the best. Let me finally thank the Gazette for allowing us at the Embassy to share insights and consular news with the Belgian community.

Kind regards,Geert Cockx

BLBGEvery end is a new beginning

September is traditionally the start of a new business season. The kick-off of a new year filled with exiting activities and business events at BLBG. It is the moment to welcome new compatriots who freshly arrived in Singapore as well as a moment to embrace members who recently joined our business community.

This year however, September will also be a moment of goodbye. After two years serving the Belgian, Luxembourg companies and our BLBG members, I will make my way to the other side of the world, Sao Paulo (Brazil). Before leaving the stage, I remember the fantastic relations we build within our companies, the Belgian trade organisations as well as within our Embassies. Together we have strengthened our Belgian, Luxembourg presence in Singapore and we closely connected them with the local businesses, authorities and chambers. By increasing our number of members and especially by gaining a few top international companies as new partners, we definitely entered the “national leagues of Chambers”. Although not being the biggest European Chamber in Singapore, still BLBG has not left unnoticed. After having gathered almost 700 people during the business season 2015/16, we broke the record during the 2016/17-season by hosting over 750 attendees during our events. The BLBG Gala Event even became an undisputable reference in terms of prestigious business galas in Singapore.

Success never comes by chance, nor alone. We have been working hard as a team to build our business association over the past few years. Our focus remained on high-level events covering a diversity

of business relevant topics and industries. Moreover, we kept our commitment to create valuable networking opportunities for our members. Although a new President will be elected soon, the team and the foundations are definitely there to keep up the spirit for the future.

I feel very confident that BLBG will continue to grow, continue to connect business professionals and especially will further contribute to our Belgium, Luxembourg successes in the Asian markets.

It was a great honour and absolute pleasure being part of this incredible dynamic association and I already would like to thank my team, our members and colleagues at the Embassies, trade organisations and Chambers for your support and confidence.

I hope to see you at the inauguration of the new Board during our Openings-reception on Thursday 21st September. More info on our website (www.blbg.org.sg), via LinkedIn or on Facebook!

PresidentAnne De Weert

‘Anne & manne’ or ‘An & men’ is how I often sign my emails to friends and family. Filip and I are indeed proud parents of 3 boys; of which the eldest two are born in Istanbul - not less than 3 minutes apart - and the youngest has taken his first breath in… Singapore, of all places. So it comes as no surprise if I tell you that we’ve been a long term BLAS member already, albeit with a break in between as we were living in Shanghai. I won’t tell you exactly how long, that would give away my age too easily, but let me just say this. Where before my boys were excited to sit on Saint Nicholas’ lap, nowadays they would be excited if they could join our Get Togethers for a drink … (Thomas, Alexis and Dimitri, if you ever get to read this: not before another year or two).Next to dedicating my time to family and BLAS, I have a passion for teaching maths, (classical) music and nature.

ViCe-PresidentPhilippe Van Houcke

Since we arrived in Singapore mid 2016 it was also thanks to BLAS we felt quickly at home. Now I am looking forward to helping organising events for the association. BLAS is the perfect platform to bring persons together over mutual interests and sharing experiences. Hope to meet you soon!

An expatriation can only be a success story if the family as a whole feels 'at home' in the new city, community. As I could undergo myself two years ago when we arrived with our three kids, BLAS is an organisation that facilitates this process. It is with pleasure that I will be your treasurer this year. We will strive to get the best value for money deals at each event in order to give back to our members. Welcome (back) and let's make it an exceptional BLAS year!

I've been living abroad for the last 26 years. First we moved to Atlanta and then to Chicago in the US. We have experienced the US for 16 years, where I worked for UCB. Our three children were born in Atlanta, the oldest two living in London and our youngest attending university in Europe. So we are empty-nesters in Singapore. After 7 years in Paris, we arrived in Singapore. This has been our home since summer 2013 and we love it! It has been a great experience to live and travel extensively around Asia. I have a background in Human Resources and I am still working as Intercultural trainer/coach. But my real passion is painting, so you can find me at My Art Space studio many days of the week.I am part of the BLAS Committee, supporting the Secretary and part of the Welcome team. I look forward to meeting you at the BLAS events!

Committee membersPatricia Vermast

Since 2009 I had a glimpse of what expat life was like when my husband Jacques was commuting between Belgium and Cairo, Mexico City, Düsseldorf and Shanghai where he worked. During that time I lived in Belgium with our 2 children and worked

as a freelance marketing and administration project coordinator and had the chance to travel a lot to

these amazing countries. As now, Laurence and Mathieu are at work and doing house and cat sitting, I enjoy the “real” expat life and live since almost 2 years here in amazing Singapore with Jacques.I’m still working part time as a freelancer and next to this I enjoy good readings, my Canon camera, my kitchen and of course all the marvellous known and less known places on this island and beyond. And yes, a little of my spare time goes to BLAS (committee and gazette team) where I can find this little “home” feeling we all sometimes miss.

Marie-Christine GuietteMy Singapore story started 2 years ago when I joined

my husband Baudouin (Bo) who moved for his job to this lovely Little Red Dot beginning 2015. Our three kids remain in Europe. As a nurse I volunteer a few times a week at

H.O.M.E (Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics). This is a place that gives shelter to

domestic helpers in need of support after being forced to leave their employers. And by the way, I am also a volunteer of BLAS Facebook and I take care of other organisational BLAS duties.

Manuela ClercxI'm a mother of 3 gorgeous girls, 2 are studying in

Belgium and the youngest is finishing her IB at UWC. I'm a yoga teacher and I am continuing my education to become a yoga therapist. We've been living in Singapore for 5 years now

and we've enjoyed being part of the BLAS.

Katleen MissiaenI've been living in Singapore with my hubby for 4

years now and we still love it here! I work for Cartamundi, the world's largest card and board game manufacturer and my hubby for asset manager Econopolis.

Passionate about traveling, cooking, nature walking and discovering new neighbourhoods in

Singapore. Besides the usual suspects Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam, there are many more interesting places to discover in Singapore such as Tiong Bahru, Joo Chiat, Balestier, Bukit Brown Cemetery ... These are only a few of the places we visited with BLAS during the previous years and we will continue to organize cultural tours on a regular basis so hope to see you there soon!

Hanne LemmensI am living in Singapore since 2,5 years now, married

and proud mother of a 5 years old boy and 7 years old girl. I am quite sporty and try to run a lot. I am a positive, enthusiastic person and like to meet new people. My moto is YOLO (you

only live once). See you soon on one of our next events!

Ellen De KoningVery happy to join the BLAS crowd! I am Ellen, a 27

year old HR specialist who has been enthusiastically exploring Singapore at the personal and professional level for the past year. Passionate about meeting and connecting people, I really

look forward including all of you in my journey.

7 NEW ATTRACTIONS OPENING IN 2017 Source: mustsharenews.com/new-attractions-singapore

AJ HACKETT SENTOSA A new iconic attraction is being built on everyone’s favourite leisure island that will make you jump for joy, and also off a tower…Siloso Beach will be home to Singapore’s first-ever 50m-tall bungee tower.  It’ll be accompanied by several new activities that will make even the most hardcore of adrenaline junkies lick their lips in anticipation.  Bungee Jump Take a leap of faith off the 50-tall structure - but there’s more than one way to jump.  AJ Hackett’s bungee jump offers more than 20 ways to jump, enticing you to jump again, if you survive the first one, that is.  Vertical Skywalk Experience what it’s like to be an elite Special Operations Force trooper as you James Bond your way down from a height of 44m via the beach side shaft of the tower.  Up to three people can attempt this at the same time, with each run lasting for 5 minutes.

Giant Swing If you’re the competitive sort, challenge your friends to a race on the Giant Swing. There are 2 giant swings side-by-side that can carry up to 3 people each and reach up to speeds of 120kmh.

Skybridge Enjoy a stroll along the 47m-high bridge and soak in the magnificent view of Sentosa. Although the bridge is exposed,

it is safe and no harnessing system is required, so you can set your mind at ease. The Skybridge will provide a less challenging alternative to the attractions listed above, allowing people of all ages to have their fair share of thrills.  PARKVIEW MuSEuM

If you’re not the sporty type or too lazy to make a trip to Sentosa, maybe you’d find a trip to a new art museum in town more intriguing.  An art space is opened in Bugis in Parkview Square (600 North Bridge Road) - Singapore’s very own Gotham City. With a 7m-tall ceiling and an unobstructed space, this museum has the potential to feature massive installations, just like this one.

OuR TAMPINES HuB Easties, rejoice! Our Tampines Hub, Singapore’s first-ever integrated community and lifestyle hub is open.    It brings together multiple agencies to offer a comprehensive and diverse range of services, programmes and facilities. This project is led by People’s Association and is located at the former Tampines Stadium and Tampines Sports Hall.  When it will be completed, residents and people working within the vicinity will enjoy a variety of sports facilities, a brand new regional library, countless community club programmes and amenities, arts programmes and facilities, a hawker centre, retail shops and many more user-friendly features. Conceptualised with input from 15,000 Tampines residents, Our Tampines Hub is a project designed by residents, for residents.

CHANGI AIRPORT TERMINAL 4 The world’s best airport is about to get even better with the introduction of its newest terminal, Terminal 4, which is scheduled to open in the 2nd half of the year.  What makes T4 stand out from the other terminals is its FAST (Fast and Seamless Travel) check-in, baggage drop, immigration clearance, and boarding. Instead of having bag checks at the boarding gates, passengers at T4 will have to go through a central departure screening area. In anticipation of potentially longer queues, the terminal features a 70-metre long LED screen to entertain waiting passengers with up to 50 minutes of short clips shown in glorious high-def. Just like the other terminals, T4’s interior is aesthetically pleasing and posh. It’s shopping area will also be done up to look like a heritage icon, traditional Peranakan shophouses.

MARINA ONE

Marina One, deemed a “momentous collaboration” between Singapore and Malaysia, is a visually stunning mixed-use development that incorporates residential, commercial and lifestyle activities. It will have two residential towers, one office tower and one retail tower.  The most striking thing about this project is the Green Heart, a public vertical garden right smack in the middle of the four towers where people can spend time basking in the lush greenery of rooftop gardens and 13m waterfalls.

ETHNOBOTANY GARDEN Next year promises to be a good one for nature lovers, as besides Marina One’s Green Heart, a new Ethnobotany Garden of approximately 1 hectares, is being developed at the Singapore Botanical Gardens.  This new themed garden will allow visitors to learn about plants used by indigenous cultures of Southeast Asia, including Singapore. The Garden, the first of its kind in Singapore, will enhance visitor experience by providing insights into the various uses of plants in the region, and strengthen the Gardens’ position as a world-class botanic garden. It is scheduled to be completed by mid 2018. When completed, the public can explore the four zones of the Garden where plants will be categorised according to their traditional uses: craft and construction, domestic (cooking, clothing and other everyday uses), medicinal, and spiritual purposes. One of the prominent collections in the garden will include different types of bamboos used for the making of tools and in construction. You can get the latest info on: www.sbg.org.sg/

DOVER STREET MARKET Dover Street Market (DSM) is a prestigious and popular fashion retail store with an edgy concept that originated from London. It will be the flagship store in South-east Asia.  The store primarily markets “Comme des Garçons” stock along with other complementary brands such as “Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang.”

OCTOBERThe Chinese Mid-autumn Festival, which marks the end of the Autumn harvest is held on October 4th. Marking the end of the autumn harvest, the Mid-Autumn Festival was traditionally a time to give thanks to the gods.It is also a time of year that the moon is at its brightest, which is why lunar legends have always been attached to the celebration. When night falls, families gather in places like Chinatown and Chinese Garden to feast on mooncakes, a traditional pastry which comes in a variety of flavours, while children carry and parade their lanterns with their families and friends.

On October 18th the Festival of Lights commonly known as Deepavali is celebrated by Hindus. This colourful, lively extravaganza is best experienced in Little India, where the streets are lined with beautiful lights. There are tonnes of bazaars too, so get ready to shop, try authentic Indian fare and take amazing photos of the street light-ups. If you want to read more about it, check the BLAS website: Gazette November-December 2015 edition, page 14.

MID- NOVEMBER TO EARLY-JANuARY Whip out your cameras and smartphones, and get ready to snap some seriously stunning shots as you experience on A Great Street at Orchard Road.  For six weeks every year, Orchard Road is transformed into a Christmas wonderland, as majestic arches and millions of glittering lights line the streets for 2.88 kilometres, from Tanglin Mall all the way to Plaza Singapura. It’s the time of year when this iconic boulevard is at its most enchanting, with dazzling lights, gorgeous colours and a unique collection of interactive set displays. Expect the

usual shopping delights of Orchard Road but with a seasonal twist, and street-side activities with festive pop-up stores and roaming performers, there’s plenty of fun for everyone!

Working out where to travel in Australia is tough…. as there are so many diverse and superb choices… but consider adding the Yarra Valley to your must visit list! When thinking and planning your first big trip to Australia it is important to get that perfect mix of destinations. Seek out what is special and iconic about Australia. Try to get that mix of outback, beach, city & country (weather and time permitting of course). That way you get a bit of everything and get a real feel of what Australia is about. The Yarra Valley ticks the “country” box. And my what a beautiful bit of country it is!

AuSTRALIAWhy the Yarra Valley should be

on your must visit list!Written and pictures byVicki Baensch

The yarra Valley is a world-class wine region, and only 60 minutes from Melbourne. The valley has crisp clean air and spectacular views of the valley to the Dandenong Ranges beyond. This is a natural location with plenty to do, or you can simply relax and enjoy the gourmet food and wines of the region. But it does deliver so much more! Be inspired with the natural beauty of the towering eucalypt forests which are great for walking off all the food and wine. This is where you can stay in a country cottage in a natural bush setting with plenty of native animals around at dusk when you are relaxing on your balcony with a glass of local wine. Spend a day at the Healesville Sanctuary and get up close and personal with our Aussie

native animals… your children will love it whether they are 2 or 21!

THINGS TO DO IN THE YARRA VALLEY Healesville Sanctuary: Meet your favourite Australian animals. The Sanctuary features unique experiences with Australian wildlife amongst the sights, sounds and scents of the stunning bushland surrounds. Do not miss the Health Centre where they treat the sick/injured or orphaned wildlife. The Koala Forest is another must do and finally the spectacular Birds of Prey show which runs twice a day. www.zoo.org.au/healesville

Wineries/Gourmet Food: The Valley is home to over 80 cellar doors, sumptuous fine-dining restaurants and artisan producers of magnificent cheeses, elegant chocolates and an ale/cider trail. Go knock yourself out and attempt to try them all!

National Parks: Set out for a leisurely walk past tall trees, clear creeks and fern-fringed waterfalls at either Kinglake National Park or Yarra Ranges National Park.

Golf: The Yarra Valley delivers spectacular scenery and a relaxing region to enjoy

your golf. There are many courses to choose from such as the Eastern Golf Club, Yering Meadows Golf Club, The Gardiners Run & the Yarra Valley Country Club.

Other Attractions: Take a breathtaking early morning hot air balloon ride over the valley, visit and wander the meandering Alowyn Gardens, make sure to visit Coombe which is a garden, restaurant and gallery or go further afield and enjoy a Steam Train ride through the Dandenong Ranges on Puffing Billy.

“Good morning ladies and gentlemen! My name is Marie, I’m Belgian and I’m a volunteer guide at the Friends of the Museum here at the ACM”.This is how I will happily greet you if you join me for a guided tour at the ACM, Asian Civilisations Museum.

Maybe you have already heard about the Friends of Museums (FOM), maybe you haven’t. FOM is a fabulous organisation, founded in 1978 by four volunteer ladies. The organisation offers guiding service to Singaporean’s museums and cultural institutions, offering programs to enhance the community’s knowledge of Asia’s history, culture and art.

At first, I was delighted by what Singapore, the city-state, had to offer: vibrant districts, marvellous food discoveries, celebrations of a multi-cultural nation all year round, well preserved parks and natural reserves to escape the hectic city centre (not the heat and sweat unfortunately). But since I joined FOM I look at and discover the place where I live from a different angle. FOM offer us, whether you are a temporary or permanent resident, the opportunity to get involved in a deeper way in Singapore’s life. Automatically you get to know more about its history, culture and art about South East Asia in general.

Friends of the Museum offer many ways to its members to explore and share their love of culture with others, whether by participating directly or just listening intently. You can join Monday morning lectures, Asian book groups, Asian film study groups, Asian study groups, visits in Singapore, textiles groups ... and more,

become a docent at one of the nine museums supported by the organisation. I chose to go to the Monday lectures and become a volunteer docent.

I started this extraordinary journey in September 2016 and my training lasted for seven months. It was like riding a roller-coaster, being back to school with its ups and downs, but so rewarding at the end. One of the attractive aspects of the training is it is run by a group of docents who are all volunteers with a high level of professionalism and commitment. I found myself immerse in a new world. I discovered a diverse group of people with worldwide backgrounds, as well as culturally as professionally. I shared hours and days with passionate people who shared a common goal: being a good docent, helping trainees become the best possible guides. Through the docent training, you take a path which is built and broadens week by week. This is accomplished thanks to the lectures you listen to, given by professional and passionate persons, the practical activities which enable the trainees to build their abilities to guide, the tours as highlight and the several field trips which complement the readings done at home and so much more!

As time passed, friendships were formed and I discovered myself looking forward to our Tuesday lectures and Fridays tours or practices. I admit that when the training ended I felt ‘lost’ missing all my fellow docents. Luckily, on my tours we often run into one another, so we grab the opportunity to have a lovely coffee-chat after our tour. Presenting my own tour was the final step of the training. An exciting and so

rewarding moment! Since then guiding, either adults or students tours (you do both), is always a rich moment for me. Within that hour I share my interest and knowledge in interaction with my audience.

Being a docent, you receive a lot and you have much to share at the same time. So from this year on I will be part of the training team, supporting new trainees in their journey of future guide.

Most of the docent’s trainings start in September, some in January or even later. They follow a general framework: two mornings per week for lectures, practical activities, highlight tours plus field trips and social activities… Each museum has its specificities. If you have any questions on the docent training visit FOM website: www.fom.sg and look at FOM-English-Language Docent Training. You’ll find more information for each museum.

I chose to guide at the ACM as I thought it would offer a complete package. It did not only include the cultural roots of Singapore, its history and art but it covered these topics of whole South East Asia as well. The study of the complex and rich cultures of the region gave me an insight into all the different cultures and people’s behaviour. Learning made me even more enthusiastic in sharing all these stories and facts. Although I prefer to guide some artefacts in my tours, I’m impressed by the beauty and richness of the whole ACM collection. I can’t wait to learn more about it and guide more of it.

Life is a constant journey of discovery. Therefore I’m so grateful to live in Singapore and have the opportunity to have that experience, a true life-time experience!I would like here to insert a quote from FOM’s website: ‘Arts and culture has a profound impact on our society. It has the power to influence an individual’s identity and aspirations, foster closer relationships within a community and make Singapore an even more exciting and vibrant place to live in.’

If you also want to have such an exceptional experience and open your eyes and heart to a whole ‘different’ Singapore, you can join FOM any time.

SLEEPING IN SINGAPORE, A BELGIAN AffAIR?

9 tips to get a cool night’s sleep

Are you tired of the relentless heat and sticky humidity? If all you want to do at night is tumble into a cool comfortable bed, then you’ve come to the right place.

1. KEEP SHADES PARTIALLY CLOSED DuRING THE DAYTIMEWhen you’re out at work, keep your bedroom curtains or blinds partially closed during the daytime. This will avoid the build-up of heat. Because of the high humidity in Singapore, you should not fully close the blinds as the constant dark may encourage mildew or mould growth. Instead, keep the curtains or blinds partially closed during the day - enough to block out most of the sun while still allowing sufficient light to discourage mould growth. 2. uSE A fAN, AIR CONDITIONING OR AIR COOLERIf you can afford to invest in an air conditioning unit, this is an ideal solution. If you will only be cooling your bedroom, the cost may not be as high as you think. However, it is very important to take care of the unit because standing water is produced by condensation in an air conditioner as a by-product of the cooling process. This can run the risk off attracting disease-carrying mosquitos, so regular removal of stagnant water and disinfection of units is necessary. So the upkeep and maintenance of air

conditioning should be taken into account when deciding whether to install.  3. COOL Off BEfORE GOING TO BEDDon’t go to bed warm. Instead, cool off by having a shower first. Or use a spray mist device (similar to what you might use to water plants) with cold water and spray it on your body. Another alternative is an ice pack wrapped in a towel and placed it over your whole body, from top to bottom, just before you lie down to sleep. 4. uSE LIGHT BEDDINGBe practical when selecting your sheets. Light cotton sheets are ideal for a cool night’s sleep. Don’t be tempted by thick luxury-looking sheets which can simply feel too hot. 5. uNCOVER YOuR fEETIf you use a sheet on top of you, uncover your feet. Your feet have a surprisingly large surface area, so keeping your feet cool can help your whole body and skin feel cool. Additionally, consider washing your feet in cold water just before bed - this can help get your feet off to a cool start at bedtime.

6. RETHINK YOuR NIGHTWEARSleep in loose, comfortable nightwear made from natural fibres. For example, an undershirt and shorts make good sleepwear that can help make you feel cooler. Cotton, linen or silk is ideal as these are natural fabrics.   7. HYDRATE TO fEEL COOL, CALM AND COLLECTEDDrink plenty of cold water. A tall glass of iced water can go a long way to keeping your whole body cool. Make a

practice of keeping well hydrated during the daytime - especially in the early evening. This will help you get a cooler night’s sleep.

8. uSE A LATEx MATTRESSYou may be surprised to know that your mattress has a big effect on how cool or warm you’ll feel while sleeping. A latex mattress can get you get a cooler night’s sleep because of its excellent air circulation. Latex mattresses are manufactured with pinholes throughout to ensure proper airflow and breathability. This results in a cooler sleep for you.  In contrast, memory foam mattresses are known for ‹sleeping hot›, where you feel hotter in bed than out of it. While this may be a good thing in cooler climates, a memory foam mattress is definitely a big drawback in the warm climate of Singapore. The other good news about latex mattresses is that they are naturally mould resistant. This mould resistance is ideally suited to the high humidity in Singapore.  9. uSE A COOL PILLOWMost people forget the role a pillow can play in maintaining a cool temperature while sleeping. There are several options. One option is a gel-filled pillow, which pulls heat away from your head. However, these are not made from natural products.  Instead, a latex pillow is ideal for keeping your head cool while sleeping. Latex is a highly breathable natural product which allows plenty of airflow. As a bonus, latex pillows are also known for keeping their plush shape properly due to the natural elastic properties of latex. In contrast, an ordinary new pillow will become flat over just a few months.  So if you need a cool night›s sleep, pay attention to your pillow!  A soft, supportive latex pillow will deliver you wonderful comfort in addition to coolness. ENJOY SLEEPING COOLER AND CALMERWhen you use the tips given above, you’ll sleep much cooler in the midst of hot sticky weather. Remember, if you’re feeling too warm at night then you’ll toss

day refreshed and in a positive frame of mind. You›ll feel happier, more focused, and other people are certain to enjoy being around you. Why not give yourself the advantage of a cool night's sleep?

A little about ourselvesOur small team consists of two permanent staff and a friendly bunch of freelancers that help us wherever needed. Thijs Veyfeyken is our General Manager and oversees the daily works at European Bedding. When u visit us on the weekends, he will definitely be entertaining customers in the showroom. Charlotte Mulleman is our Sales Executive and oversees the sales operations and more practical aspects of our business. Both of us are Belgians that call Singapore home nowadays.

How did European Bedding started? How did the idea come about for starting it in Singapore? How did the idea come about for starting it in Singapore? While looking for our own mattress, we found that it was quite tricky to find something that suited us: a no-nonsense concept made out of Natural latex foam that offers a good back support and in a European Size. We brought our bedframe from Belgium and found it quite hard to find something in ready-stock that had the right length. Talking to other members of Blas, made us realize we were not the only ones facing this problem. This is how the idea grew and European Bedding Singapore was born. We started in 2013 at our previous

location in Grange Road. After being there for 3 years, we moved to the hip area of Tiong Bahru, where we are still today.

What does European Bedding offers and what differentiates its products from other brands?European Bedding offers Natural Organic Latex mattresses and adjustable slatted bed bases as we know them in Belgium. We don’t believe in coil-count, glues and chemicals, but instead swear by our 100% Natural Organic Latex mattress that provides an excellent support and comfort. Beautiful is that we don’t use any glues nor chemicals and are not afraid to show it! All of our mattresses come with an unzip-pable cover. All covers can be unzipped and washed for that extra hygiene. Too tall for an Asian King size? No problem, the best-selling size is a European King and always in ready stock. We are so sure of our product, that we offer a 100 days free trial on our products!

LanguageOne is an international organisation that provides high-quality mother tongue education to Dutch- and Flemish-speaking children, aged 2½ to 18 years, who (temporarily or permanently) live abroad. It has developed a close working relationship with a wide variety of international schools, many of which teach International Baccalaureate® (IB) programmes.

LanguageOne believes that it is vital for children to develop their mother tongue alongside the school language. Language is an important factor in finding a good balance between social-emotional and academic growth. Mother tongue education can help children find stability when growing up in an unfamiliar new country. It also helps in learning a new foreign language quicker (often English).Students not only further develop their mother tongue, but also their Dutch or Flemish cultural identity. It also enables Flemish or Dutch students to easily return to local education, once they move back to Belgium or the Netherlands.

LANGuAGEONE SINGAPOREStarting school year 2017-2018, approximately 190 students will be enrolled at LanguageOne Singapore, on the premises of five international day schools. The Dutch Language and Culture (NTC*) classes are either integrated in the curriculum of the day school or take place after school, three hours per week. Each group consists of roughly 10 students. LanguageOne has developed a new curriculum with a clear focus on the student, language development and meaningful learning. It is complimentary to international curricula practiced in the day schools, and compliant with the Dutch core objectives and Flemish attainment levels in education.

Weekly ActivitiesWhere are all the sporty ones?

The BLAS sports team organises a lot of activities during the year, usual and unusual sports, known and less known sports. On a weekly basis you can play tennis and/ or soccer with BLAS members.

SOCCERWe welcome you to play weekly soccer on Saturday afternoons, usually at 3pm. We play in a competition called: Equatorial League - Qualifying Division. BLAS does not have a home turf so we play at different pitches every week. The team is open to players of all levels and ages. During the game, we are allowed to have continuous substitutions. Afterwards, we go for a drink and a laugh at a food court close to the pitch. If you would like to join or get more information, please contact Quinten Sleuwaegen or Laurens van den Brule at [email protected]. Also sports fans are more than welcome!

TENNISWe play doubles and change teams every 40 minutes so you get to play with different players and different levels of skill. Every member who likes to hit a ball is welcome, regardless of level! We are scouting for a new location to revive our Friday evening social tennis and will let you know as soon as we have found one! Check the latest info on the BLAS website.

Dinner TournantAgain a hit! This event has been promoted as one of the “not to miss” moments of the year. A tasty event full of mystery encounters with BLAS friends (to be). While enjoying an appetising 3 course meal in a homey atmosphere, you meet different table companions throughout this ‘Merry-go-round’ dinner. Don’t miss it this season!

Feng Shui behind Singapore’s buildings – guided tourDuring our cultural tour about Feng Shui it became very clear to us that this philosophy is very commonly used in Singapore architecture. From office buildings to shopping centres and hotels, all of these would follow the advice of a Feng Shui master in order to attract more customers, more money and so become very successful. Great tour thanks to our knowledgeable guide Iris.

Easter breakfast @Ambassador’s residenceAll members – be it with or without children – were invited to celebrate Easter Sunday with a festive breakfast buffet at the garden of the Ambassador’s Residence. While adults had a chat over a coffee or some bubbles children went on an Easter egg hunt. Lots of fun and entertainment and a lovely Easter Bunny on top! What a nice way to spend a lazy Sunday with friends and family.
