Did your summer go asfast as ours? It seems likeit was only yesterday thatthe school bell rang forthe last time.

The school is cleaned and polished, the lawns are mowed

as a opatg Mag rwa Ppsa. The Operating Millage Renewal Proposal will allow the school district to

continue to levy the statutory rate of 18 mills on all property, except principal

residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to

receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance.

We have provided a brief Q&A below to help you understand the importance of

    the nonhomestead election.

What os ohomsta ma? Nonhomestead represents industrial,

commercial, and second homes. It does not include a familys primary residence.

I thouht schools o lo civ fui thouh popty taxs, so

why a thy talki about a milla wal? Funding for school districts

changed signicantly in 1993/94 when Proposal A was passed by the Michigan

voters. Under Proposal A, the State pays the majority of the cost, but to receive full

funding, schools must levy 18 mills on nonhomestead property in their district.

Is this a w tax? No. This millage was approved by the voters in 1994. The

district has voter approval to levy 18 mills on nonhomestead property through

    June 2004.

How much will this cost my busiss? This renewal will have little effect on

your current taxes. For a business with property valued at $200,000 the tax cost

would be $3,600 ($200,000 1,000 x 18 mills), similar to what you are paying

    today.

Will my sitial school taxs icas too? No. This tax is on non

homestead property and does not apply to your primary place of residence.

What if th milla is vot ow? The revenue generated from the 18 mills

totals approximately $473,786 annually, greater than 13% of the school districts

budget. If this millage does not pass, the state will not replace the funding andBuckley Community Schools will be forced to reduce or cut programs to offset the

    loss.

Ca th istict us bo moy to cov th loss? Bond funds are

restricted by law to construction, technology and equipment and cannot be used

    for general fund expenditures.

You will be asked to approve the Operating Millage twice on the ballot: once to

approve the Operating Millage and a second time to approve it for three years.

Two candidates have led to run for the two open Board of Education seats.

Matthew Simon, an incumbent, is running for one seat. Kenneth Gibler chose not

to run for reelection. Brian Warren is running for that seat.

Athletics adjustments in processCommittee looking at ways to improve Bear athletics

Buckley student participates inCalvin College scholars program

Athletic Director Rne LaFreniere recently kicked off the year with all coaches at a backto

school meeting. The coaches discussed several items, one of which is an updated Athletic Code

    Book.

Basically, we are looking at the whole code book and trying to determine where we could

beef it up, LaFreniere said. Grades and behavior play an active roll in the development of ourathletes.

LaFreniere said that in his experience, when schools have

high expectations both behaviorally and academically

the athletic performance has also improved.

If students are held to a high standard in the classroom,

in the hallway, just all the way around, their overall

    performance will improve.

LaFreniere stressed that the book is a work in progress

right now. He said he will be working with others on a

committee and make a recommendation to the board of

    education.

We are not going to have a new set of standards all of the

sudden. We are going to have a process in place and share

the information with students and parents so they know

what the expectations are going to be, LaFreniere added.

LaFreniere began the discussion with the coaches, but

will be seeking input from teachers, students, and parents,

    as well.
