3 Darwin, Charles JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE GEOLOGY AND NATURAL HISTORY of the various countries visited by H M S Beagle, under the Command of Captain FitzRoy, R N from 1832 to 1836 By Charles Darwin, Esq , M A F R S Secretary to the Geological Society London: Henry Colburn, Great Marlborough Street 1839 [Reproduction of original title-page] Facsimile Edition; pp xiv, 630, [609]-[616](index, last blank); folding map of the southern portion of South America at Page xiv, and folding map of Keeling Islands at Page 532, text map & 2 text illustrations, index; original vinyl; a very good copy [Bruxelles; Culture et Civilisation; 1969] ***Freeman 161, being a facsimile of Freeman 11 (Ferguson 2739), the second issue of Darwin’s narrative, the first as a stand-alone work, it having been published earlier in the same year as Volume III - ‘Journal and Remarks’, of the three-volume ‘Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty’s Ships Adventure and Beagle’. As Freeman notes, this facsimile was made from a defective copy, and issued, at least initially, lacking signature 2Q (= pp. 593-608), however this copy has had the deficiency very skilfully remedied (possibly by the original publisher?) with the insertion of the missing leaves, so is a quite complete facsimile of the original edition. #66367 A$165.00

7 Darwin, Charles JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE NATURAL HISTORY AND GEOLOGY of the Countries Visited during the Voyage of H M S Beagle Round the World, under the Command of Capt Fitz Roy, R N By Charles Darwin, M A , F R S New Edition Cr 8vo, Second Edition, reissued; pp viii, 520(last blank); 14 text illustrations, index; original red cloth of Murray’s Colonial & Home Library (spine a little faded), uncut; (slight foxing of edges & a few leaves; a slight crease to front board); a very nice copy; rare London; John Murray; 1852 ***Sabin 18647 (third mention); Not in Ferguson; Freeman 17, but without the series title implied in his entry (and never present). The binding has the words ‘MURRAY’S COLONIAL & HOME LIBRARY’ in a circular design in blind on front cover, but only ‘MURRAY’ in gilt at foot of spine. Freeman’s commentary (page 36) also suggests that the binding of his 17 is devoid of any identification of the series: “gives no indication, in gilt or blind, that the work is one of a series; in this case the edges are sprinkled whereas they are white in the series cases. It was again reprinted in the same series in 1852 and put out in the same case as the third issue [i.e. that referred to above], this time with changed date ....” This copy therefore may represent an unrecorded variant. #66370 A$2000.00

8 Darwin, Charles JOURNAL OF RESEARCHES INTO THE NATURAL HISTORY AND GEOLOGY of the Countries Visited during the Voyage of H M S Beagle Round the World, under the Command of Capt Fitz Roy, R N By Charles Darwin, M A , F R S Author ‘Origin of Species,’ etc Tenth Thousand Cr 8vo, Second Edition, reissued; pp xvi(last blank), 520(last blank); 14 text illustrations, index; contemporary full calf, gilt, with marbled endpapers & edges and gilt dentelles; a very nice, most attractive copy; rare London; John Murray; 1860 ***Not in Sabin; Not in Ferguson (except by reference - see Ferguson 8957); Freeman 20. The final definitive text, with the addition of a Postscript on Page vii (page viii blank) and the Contents (pp. ix-xv). The four Contents leaves are printed on creamier paper than that used for the earlier preliminaries and the main text (as with all other copies we have seen). Darwin made no further alterations or additions to the text, despite the many subsequent editions (a real gold mine for John Murray and later other publishers), Darwin having sold the copyright to Murray for £150. #2172 A$2400.00

Philip Gidley King, grandson of his namesake, Captain Philip Gidley King, Governor of New South Wales 1800-1806, became a prominent citizen in his own right, as a Member of the Legislative Council of his native New South Wales. This illustrated edition was no doubt issued in response to Nelson’s edition first published in 1888, the first substantially illustrated edition (see items 36-38 below). #66379 A$450.00
