S A V E $ 2 . 1 1 $ 8 88 pint BY JOHN SCHAFFNER Dr. Robert Putnam came home last week. He was here to speak to an Oawa County Task Force on Aging, and to a group of community leaders gathered at the Island House a bit later. In between, he spent about an hour with Port Clinton Mayor, Vince Leone. His message was an eye-opener. Dr. Putnam, a 1959 graduate of Port Clinton High School, is the Dean of the Kennedy School of Govern- ment at Harvard University. He has spent the beer part of the last 10 years studying the crumbling of the American Dream among America’s Youth. He caused quite a stir locally over a year ago when he wrote a piece for the New York Times, and Port Clinton appeared. His research provided a fairly grim picture of his home town. Dr. Putnam told the group at the Island House that America began with everybody on an equal plane… “All Men Created Equal”. Equality of wealth was not something to be desired… the focus from the early days in America was equality of oppor- tunity and social mobility. He noted that historically, America has done beer on this dimen- sion than most other countries. He noted that 80% of his PCHS classmates became suc- cessful, despite the fact that nearly 50% were raised in a family where the primary bread winner didn’t even have a high school education. He remembers his mother us- ing the term “sticktoitiveness”! He praised the qualities learned in “non-academic”, extra-curricular activities as the building blocks of character. The most telling part of his presentation focused on the Child Poverty statistics in Oawa County since 1990. In that year, the child poverty level in nearly all of eastern Oawa County was 0-5%, except for the west side of Port Clinton which was 15-25%. By 2012, the child poverty level in nearly all of the areas west, east and inside Port Clinton was at 25-45%. East of SR 53 North, it dropped to 15-25%. Catawba is the exception, as the population under 18 living in poverty still resides at less than 5% there. Like the rest of the country, Dr. Putnam put the onus on cultural influences, such as the growing number of births to unmarried mothers, church aendance and children living in single-parent families. “It has abso- lutely nothing to do with the quality of our schools,” he stat- ed emphatically. He also brought some of his own history into the conver- sation. “When I grew up here, we had EOD (Erie Ordinance Depot) and Standard Products as major community employ- ers.” He noted that many of the community’s problems may date back to the closing of Standard Products in the early 1990s. Other major employ- ers who also closed their doors since the mid 1990s include: Uniroyal, Celotex and Silgan Plastics. In large measure due to the manufacturing loss, Dr. Putnam contends that the so- cial and financial gap is wid- ening, and that this is being caused due to the collapse of the working class family and economic insecurity among poor families. He also notes that less educated parents and their kids are losing the bale. As a result of the Summit as well as Putnam’s article in the New York Times, United Way of Oawa County Director, Chris Galvin has launched a number of com- munity initiatives, including an increase in child school readiness by 10% (only 50% of students entering kinder- garten in Oawa County are ready to succeed), a new child-directed play program, expanded community mentoring programs and early childhood programs like “Be At School Everyday (BASE), a project of Oawa County Juvenile Court. On Tuesday, October 21, the Friends of the Port Clinton Cemeteries completed phase one of their paving project. Phase one of the project was to pave the perimeter of Riverview Cemetery.

“The Friends of the Cemetery would like to thank the community for coming to our fundraisers and thank them for the donations we received to make this project a reality,” said spokesperson Sandy Koch.

Right now the paving of the cemeteries is the main objective of the group, but they are also taking care of smaller projects. One of those projects is getting the cemetery ready for the great Ohio gales of win-ter. Saddles for the tops of stones are available for sale through the Friends of the Cemetery. The saddles attach to the top of stones and do no scratch and they meet the City requirements set for the cemetery.

The Friends of the Cemetery also wants to remind residents that do-nations can be made to their group in memory of loved ones at the time of their passing.

The members of the Friends of the Cemetery meet the fourth Mon-day of the month at Ida Rupp Library at 6:30 p.m. Monetary dona-tions can be made to the Friends of the Cemetery, Mary Mills, 912 Lee Street, Port Clinton.

THE SO-CALLED “EXPERTS” ARE SIMPLY MISINFORMED!

Newspapers are dead?Over the last 15 years, since the proliferations of the internet, paid circulation newspapers have seen their subscriptions drop dramatically, up to 8% per year. That is why you hear “Newspapers are dead”. That’s the bad news. The good news is FREE community papers, like The Beacon, have had ZERO reduction in circulation and readership! Our latest audit shows that nearly 80% of the households who get The Beacon READ The Beacon. PLUS The Beacon is read by over 2 individuals per household. So, while the daily papers have suffered, the FREE communities weeklies like The Beacon have thrived. And better yet The Beacon’s Web Site just gets better and better, updated every day with new community news items. The Beacon was “Hyper-Local” before the term was coined!

So, when you hear “Newspapers are dead” ... don’t believe it! Community papers are alive and well, thank you! And our Web Sites are great as well because we don’t have to worry about losing readership to our own Web Site. All you have to do is sit back and read your weekly Beacon and stay informed about the “good news” happening every day. John Schaffner

Port Clinton Ford is a relatively small auto dealership, family ownedand operated. They generally average 18 to 25 car and truck sales permonth. In June, things changed...dramatically. They ran a series of fullpage ads in The Beacon and the results...42 car and truck sales in themonth of July. Shown in the photograph (l-r): Joe Mason, Parts Mgr.;Jeff Griffin, Sales; Doug and D’Ann Franck, and Bob Joseph, Service Mgr.So, print advertising is dead? Not for the folks at Port Clinton Ford.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services announced that The Light House, Inc. will receive a grant for capital and operational costs to begin a recovery and sober living home in Ot-tawa County. The Light House is a non-profit organization based in Port Clinton and formed at the urging of Judge Bruce Winters of the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court. Throughout his term as judge, Winters grew frustrated with the revolv-ing door of addiction in the criminal jus-tice system and the lack of a stable living environment for those individuals who are in recovery. Various community lead-ers answered Judge Winters’ call and have been steadily working towards the ascer-tainment of a safe, sober living environ-ment in Ottawa County.

The Light House group is comprised of representatives from various addiction treatment organizations, the recovery community, the faith community, and other community service organizations. These groups are working together to tackle addiction issues in Ottawa County. The Light House has also partnered with the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Erie and Ottawa Counties and has re-ceived a financial commitment to sustain the sober living home for at least 3 years.

This recovery and sober living home

will fill a void in addiction services that are currently available in Ottawa County. Experts in the mental health and crimi-nal justice systems have repeatedly rec-ognized the dire necessity for similar re-covery homes for individuals to succeed in sobriety. Many individuals who suffer from addiction issues struggle to find sta-ble housing where they can continue their road to recovery. The Light House will fill this need.

The Light House is scheduled to open in April of 2015 after the purchase and reno-vation of a structure. The home will be re-covery and empowerment based and will incorporate a holistic range of services. Residents of the home will be provided with a vast array of services including mental health counseling, addiction treat-ment, education, career development, physical health and wellness, and general life skills. Through grant funds, the Light House will be able to purchase and reno-vate a property and provide services to 10 individuals.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services has reserved $5 million for this grant and The Light House will learn the specific amount of the award in the coming weeks. The Light House or-ganization will continue to move forward to implement the home by April.

Although he played the lead-ing man in countless Playmakers' musicals, Doug Meyer's perhaps signature role came in 1979 when he played Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof". Interestingly, once he grew the beard for the role, he never shaved it off. The role of Tevye in the current production will be played by Steve Fillmore, a neph-ew of Doug Meyer, who also has played many leading roles. The beloved classic opens a two week run at Playmakers'

PC edges Edison, looks to the playoffsBY YANEEK SMITHPHOTOS BY BILL MIGALA

Following two straight losses, Port Clinton needed a win to build some momentum heading into the playoffs.

Despite struggling at times, the Redskins got just that, defeating Edison, 20-14, behind two big plays on special teams that helped to swing momentum in their favor and give them the lead late in this gritty, hard-fought contest.

With 2:23 left in the game and the ‘Skins trailing 14-12, Tristen Mallory broke through the line and forced an Edison lineman into the punter, causing the ball to come loose. It was recovered at the Chargers 2-yard-line, set-ting up Emerson Lowe for the winning score that put Port Clinton up 18-14 before he scored on the two-point con-version to account for the final scoring.

The other key special teams play came with the ‘Skins trailing 14-6 midway thru the fourth quarter. Nathan Stubblefield pinned Edison back at its 7-yard-line with a brilliant 65-yard-punt, helping to turn over the field. That set the ‘Skins up with good field position when they got the ball back, and they scored on a five-yard run by Lowe that cut the deficit to 14-12. Lowe, who finished with 15 carries for 105 yards and three touchdowns, led all play-ers with 148 all-purpose yards.

“It was a shame the game had to be played in those con-ditions,” Port Clinton head coach Beau Carmon said. “We found a way to get it done. That’s been our M.O. all year -- whether it’s been on the shoulders of our quarterback, wide receiver or running back. (Against Edison), it was on the shoulders of our running back and the offensive line.”

Trailing 6-0 at halftime, the Chargers responded by scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter. Dan Stoll’s seven-yard touchdown run and Lucas Munroe’s extra point put Edison ahead 7-6, finishing off a nine-play, 78-yard drive.

After Port Clinton failed to convert on a 27-yard field goal attempt, the Chargers pushed the lead to 14-6 three players later when Owen Moyer scored on a 53-yard run with 3:29 remaining in the third quarter. Moyer, the en-gine that powered Edison’s offense, ran eight times for 124 yards and a touchdown.

The only score of the first half, a 5-yard touchdown run by Lowe, came with 1:25 left in the second quarter after the ‘Skins drove 70 yards to break a scoreless tie.

The win moves Port Clinton to 7-3 and 3-3 in the SBC while Edison falls to 5-5 and 2-4 in the conference.

It was another tough test for the ‘Skins, who have been in a number of battles during the second half of the sea-son.

“(Jim Hall) has done a really good job at Edison,” Carmon said. “For their size, they hold their own. It was a really

good test for us -- they gave us all they could.”Port Clinton continues its season on Friday in the Division

IV State Playoffs with a matchup at Kenton. The Wildcats, the No. 4 seed in the region, hold an 8-2 record and are out of the Western Buckeye League. Winners of two state titles (2001, ‘02), Kenton advanced to the state semifinals last sea-son before falling to eventual-champion Clarksville Clinton-Massie, 21-20. This year’s squad, however, does not appear to be quite as dynamic or as potent as the one from 2013.

Regardless of how things play out, it’s been an incredible season for Carmon’s squad, one that has improved from 0-10 to 7-3 in just one season.

“We knew that we had a lot of good football players,” he said. “We knew that we could win football games, (but) we tried re-ally hard not to look ahead and we just took it game by game.”

Carmon sensed that this was a special group when they won a 7-on-7 tournament at Seneca East High School over the summer. In that tournament, the ‘Skins defeated Havi-land Wayne Trace, the state runner-up in Division VI last season. And in addition to the team’s plethora of playmakers, Carmon also credited his group with staying strong through-out the season.

“We’ve had no severe injuries,” Carmon said, “and that starts with our weight-training and conditioning. There are a lot of demands to playing football, (and) we have a number of kids that were ready to play for 10 weeks or more.”

There will be a bus leaving True-Lay Stadium on Friday for the playoff game at 3:45 p.m. Anyone interested in making the trip should contact Tracy Stubblefield via Facebook. Peo-ple are expected to be at the stadium between 3-3:30.

As tourna-ment champions, Gem Beach qualifies to compete at the S.A.Y. State Soccer Tour-nament held November 8 and 9 in Cincin-nati. Led by coaches Megan Knecht and Chelsea Kitzler, the team of six and seven

year old girls will compete with teams from all over the state of Ohio.

Rockets rally todefeat Margaretta, 16-8BY YANEEK SMITH

Down eight points in the second quarter in its final game of the season, it would’ve been easy for Oak Harbor to fold and end the season with a loss.

Instead, the Rockets rallied to defeat Margaretta, 16-8, to finish the season with a 3-7 record and a 2-4 mark in the San-dusky Bay Conference.

Trailing 8-0, Oak Harbor quarterback Andre Ramsey found Jonathan Frederick for a touchdown, and the two-point con-version tied the score heading into the half.

The Rockets took the lead for good when Frederick scored just over a minute into the third quarter. The ensuing two-point conversion made it 16-8, and Oak Harbor never looked back.

Lakers fight valiantly, fall to Tiffin Calvert, 38-6BY YANEEK SMITH

Despite trailing by just six points at half-time, the Danbury Lakers couldn’t with-stand Tiffin Calvert’s second-half push and fell to the Senecas, 38-6, in the final game of the season.

Quarterback Justin Tibbels, who was filling for an injured Seth Vargo, nearly scored on the last play of the first half, something that would’ve given Danbury a lead heading into halftime, but Calvert stopped the Lakers short before rebound-ing to control the second half before pull-ing away.

On first down at the Senecas 17-yard-line with three seconds remaining, Tibbels ran up the middle on a quarterback draw that fooled the defense and nearly scored before being tackled at the 2-yard-line as time expired, helping Calvert to maintain a 6-0 lead at halftime.

The Senecas pushed the lead to 12-0 early in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Tyler Long, who was stopped right at the goal line but was ruled by the officials, who took about five seconds to make the call, to have just crossed the plane. Adam Recker ran it in for the two-point conver-sion to push the lead to 14-0, and Calvert made it a 22-point lead on their ensuing drive, scoring when Drew Ritzler found Long on an 80-yard screen pass that he took the length of the field for the score.

The Lakers, who finish the season 3-7 and 1-6 in the Toledo Area Athletic Con-ference, responded, scoring on the next drive when Tibbels found James Dorko on a 63-yard pass to cut the deficit to 22-6 with 6:13 left to play in the third quarter.

But the Senecas, who are 8-2 and won the conference with a perfect 6-0 mark,

scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to break the game open and ac-count for the final points. Calvert, which advanced to the Division VII State Play-offs, hosts Leipsic on Saturday.

Danbury was able to hold the Sen-ecas rushing attack in check for the first two quarters before Calvert finally broke through. The Senecas’ top running backs, Long and Recker, ran for a combined 289 yards and scored all five of the team’s touchdowns. Long, a Big Ten recruit, fin-ished with 25 carries for 156 yards and had 245 yards of total offense, and Recker ran 19 times for 133 yards.

Tibbels completed 2-of-3 passes for 64 yards and a touchdown and Dorko fin-ished with 85 yards of total offense and a score in his final game for the Lakers.

Danbury had an opportunity early when it recovered an onside kick on the game’s first play but turned it back over to the Senecas on the very next play.

The lone score of the first half came on an eight-yard run by Long with 8:56 re-maining in the first quarter.

Online Meeting with Superintendent of Schools

There will be an online meeting with Port Clinton City School District Super-intendent Patrick Adkins on Wednesday, November 12, starting at noon. This is a live, interactive meeting where partici-pants can type in their questions and see video display with discussion.

The topic will be the New Elementary

Report Cards. Bataan Intermediate Prin-cipal Mr. Geoff Halsey will also be join-ing the conversation. The link will be posted under the News at www.pccsd.net or save this link to join the conversa-tion November 12: https://pccsd.adobe-connect.com/r6l6k6aso8o/

PCMS honored by Ohio Department of Education

The Port Clinton City School District is excited to report, The Ohio Department of Education has named Port Clinton Middle School a High Progress School of Honor! This is based upon their 2013-2014 Ohio School Report Card data on student read-ing and math performance.

“Education is making a difference, and these teachers, students, leaders and com-munities are making a difference for the boys and girls in their local schools,” said Dr. Richard A. Ross, superintendent of public instruction. “I’m especially proud of what these schools have achieved dur-ing a year when we raised learning stan-dards for students and launched higher accountability measures for schools.”

According to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE), the High Progress School of Honor status is earned by show-ing consistent progress in raising math and reading skills for all student groups. In the letter from ODE to PCMS it stated, “You have proved that administrators, teachers and families who have high ex-pectations and provide continual support can enable students from all backgrounds to achieve academically. Together, you are opening up a world of opportunities for your students and building a wonderful legacy for your community.”

Patrick Adkins, Superintendent of Schools added, “This designation has been earned by less than 1% of the schools in the state of Ohio and recognizes schools for their student data in the areas of reading and math as recorded on the state report card. The School of Honor program looks at schools with a high percentage of stu-dents from economically disadvantaged homes and tracks the performance of all students in these areas over a five year pe-riod. In a time when accountability is at an all-time high it’s great to see the hard work and dedication being rewarded.”

Port Clinton Middle School Principal Carrie Sanchez is thrilled with the recog-nition and credited her staff’s work ethic to engage, enrich, and challenge instruc-tion so that all students demonstrate aca-demic growth. She said, “This honor cel-ebrates the results of the 2013-2014 report card, but what we are even more proud of is that the data that was used to generate this recognition comes from five years worth of student performance. It was not a ‘fluke’, it is demonstrative of consistent and persistent superior work in the class-room from both students and teachers. This recognition is an honor for both our school and our community.”

PCHS Touch of Class to Perform at Festival

This Saturday, November 8, Port Clinton High School Touch of Class will be trav-eling to Kettering Fairmont High School to participate in the Kettering National High School A Cappella Festival. This year, Touch of Class applied for a special performance showcase at the festival by sending in various video recordings. They were rated in the top four of all groups who applied, which included over forty other high school groups from seven different states! The group has worked extremely hard to reach this level of performance and is excited to have the opportunity to represent Port Clinton to such a wide au-dience.

At the festival, students will attend in-dividual clinics with some of the most

prominent names in pop a cappella and have the opportunity to attend various master classes to further their musical ed-ucation. As part of the festival, the group will also be working with Streetcorner Symphony and Voice Play, both profes-sional groups that have been featured on previous seasons of NBC’s The Sing-Off.

This year’s members of Touch of Class are Sydney Alexander, Kiya Brown, Pay-ton Evans, Kassie Finneran, Allison Gil-leland, Laura Helmer, Logan Hepp, Jaden Kleinhans (sound technician), Haley Klima, Baileigh Limestahl, Keegan Lowe, Alyson Shaler, Libby Showalter, Noah Smith, Alex Suter, Courtney Trent, and Logan Willoughby; the group is under the direction of Mr. Eric Watts.

LEGAL AD/NOTIFICATION

For the third consecutive year, faculty and staff at Terra State Community College have developed a week of activities to “Celebrate Terra State.”

The celebration, Nov. 10 through 14, will include a variety of invitation-only events, including gatherings highlighting women in leadership, veterans, scholarship recipients and Terra College Foundation donors.

On Thursday (Nov. 13), however, the annual Open House and Chili Cook-off will take over the campus, and everyone is invited.

One highlight will be the “Total Patient En-counter,” an interactive tour of the various healthcare programs at Terra State.

The tour will follow a patient throughout a healthcare encounter that begins with an of-fice visit in the Medical Assisting Lab that will require a visit to the Phlebotomy Lab for outpatient services. They will then have an unexpected admission to the Nursing Lab for

inpatient treatment that will necessitate a vis-it to the Physical Therapy Lab for therapeutic intervention. Lastly, a visit to the Health In-formation Technology Lab will show how the patient’s health information is managed once they leave the facility.

There will also be open labs in the following programs: Route 53 Recording Studio, manu-facturing, electricity and programmable con-trollers, robotics, plastics, machining, archi-tectural construction, digital arts and media design, welding, automotive, HVACR, hospi-tality and culinary lab, computer information systems, office administration and more.

Several offices will also be open, including Admissions and Academic Advising, the Vet-erans Center, Records, Cashiers, Financial Aid, Academic Service and Transfer Center, Career Services and even the Tree Tops Café.

The chili will be located in various spots on campus, prompting visitors to make their way

throughout the buildings. Those who com-plete the self-guided tour of campus and par-ticipate in a scavenger hunt will be in line for some nice prizes.

The Open House is 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13. (chili cook-off is 5 to 6 p.m.) Start your adventure in the Atrium of Building B.

Follow Terra State’s Facebook page for further details. facebook.com/TerraState-CommunityCollege/t i m e l i n e # ! / Te r -raStateCommunity-College/timeline.
