Magee Marsh Wildlife Area was recently voted the Best Birding Destination by the readers of USA Today; it is also known as the “warbler capital of the world.” Those enjoying various kinds of wildlife, beautiful scenery and helping people of all ages, are invited to volunteer at the Migratory Bird Center in the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. The Friends of Magee Marsh need volun-teers to help with projects they sponsor throughout the year.

A volunteer may be asked to help with: an-swering visitor’s questions, assisting in the gift shop, giving out information, ex. maps, about the area, helping with the boardwalk restoration project, pulling garlic mustard and Lake Erie beach clean-up.

The Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and Sportmen’s Migratory Bird Center are 17

miles west of Port Clinton, located at 13229 W. State Rt. 2 between State Rts. 19 and 590.

Volunteers are needed March through No-vember and are asked to work a minimum of one six-hour day a month, but most work longer, especially during the wildlife area’s busy month in May.

A volunteer training session is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at 12 p.m. for all vol-unteers at the Bird Center and will include a pizza lunch. Those interested in volunteer-ing and signing up for the session should visit the Friends of Magee Marsh Facebook page and send a message with the name, phone number, address and email address of the interested volunteer. Those interested can also send an email to [email protected] with the same volunteer information.

Thank you to Danbury residentsThe holiday season brings out the best in people. For 2014, Danbury Township, Lake-

side and Marblehead residents and area businesses enthusiastically helped the Dan-bury Holiday Bureau, in the Danbury area, provided 101 families, for a total of 327 peo-ple, with food and other necessities to brighten their lives during the Christmas season.

A huge thanks goes to Bassett’s Market, Bergman Orchards, the Coast Guard, Danbury Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, Danbury Schools, Danchisen Marathon Service, Erie Food Market, Dr. Gary Greunke, Jack’s Amish Country Konnection, Lakeside Marblehead Storage, Marblehead Bank, Marblehead Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, Marilyn’s (Lakeside), Mutach’s Food Market, the Peninsula Lions, the Salvation Army, and St. Mary’s Church. To the animal loving readers at The BeaconThe Beacon has printed articles on several occasions

of our precious animals here at Island Safe Harbor Ani-mal Sanctuary (ISHAS). I am so happy to say that all the animals that have been featured in The Beacon have all found their furever homes with wonderful, caring fami-lies. I truly believe The Beacon has a large following of

animal lovers and those wonderful people know that when The Beacon prints a story it is true and heartfelt by The Beacon staff.

I have known John Schaffner since I first got involved in this area in being a voice for the animals and opening this sanctuary. John was here taking pictures with words of encouragement when we rescued 93 puppy mill breed-er dogs. He knows what it is to rescue (because he has

rescued) and the emotions and work involved.I just want to thank The Beacon staff for helping our

special, precious animals who deserve to have a furever home.

Jamie Beier Grant, Director with the Ottawa County Improvement Corporation (OCIC) has been selected as a winner in the economic development profession’s 40 Under 40 awards, the only award of its kind recognizing young talent in the economic development profession.

A five-member selection committee chose the winners from a pool of more than 157 candidates based on their exceptional contributions to the economic development industry. The award’s program was managed by Develop-ment Counsellors International (DCI), a New York-based firm that specializes in economic development marketing.

“This recognition is a celebration of Jamie’s accomplish-ments as Director of the OCIC and is a reflection of the value and quality of services the OCIC provides to our community,” said OCIC President Jim Stouffer. “The board congratulates Jamie for her recognition in leader-ship, professionalism and dedication to OCIC’s current and future success.”

Since joining the OCIC in 2004, Ms. Beier Grant has leveraged $25 million in financing and incentives to sup-port new project investments of $775+ million, including investments by Davis Besse, Fenner Dunlop, Materion-Brush, Inc., and Northern Manufacturing, and the cre-ation of more than 500 jobs.

Ms. Beier Grant was appointed by the Ohio Legislature as a Member of the Ohio Tax Credit Authority and has served in leadership roles with the Northwest Ohio Eco-nomic Development Association and Ohio Economic De-velopment Association. She has also served a chair of the United Way in Ottawa County and has been integral in es-tablishing the Ottawa County Business Advisory Council, connecting educational and business leadership together to address the growing workforce needs locally.

DCI’s 40 Under 40 award was designed to discover the economic development profession’s rising stars.

“The people chosen by the selection committee repre-sent a bright future for the economic development world,” said Andy Levine, president of DCI. “They are a new breed of results-driven place makers. We’re very pleased to see Ms. Beier Grant among the winners.”

DCI officially announced the winners last night at an awards reception during the International Economic De-velopment Council Leadership Summit in Palm Beach and will feature an in-depth profile of each on its website during 2015.

For more information on DCI’s 40 Under 40 winners, visit aboutdci.com/40under40.

BY LINDA HUBER, LAKESIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY BOARD MEMBER

Lakeside Heritage Society Director of Operations, Gretchen Curtis, spoke with Danbury fourth grade students in January about winter ac-tivities 100 years ago on the ice surrounding the Marblehead Peninsula.

In the days before electric refrigerators were invented for keeping food and beverages cold, local families used an ice box that really was a box with an ice compartment filled with ice from Lake Erie. With the entire Peninsula surrounded by Lake Erie, residents had a front row seat to the business of harvesting ice.

During January and February when ice was the thickest, men were employed to harvest the ice in large blocks. Horses were essential to the ice harvesting process. The horses wore shoes with metal cleats as did the men to keep them from slipping.

The first thing the men did was to hook a wooden plow blade behind horses to scrape snow off the ice. Another blade with teeth was pulled by horses led by a man to mark a grid pattern on the ice. The grid pattern guided the men who used one-handed saws to cut ice into large blocks. Depending upon the location of the harvest, the blocks of ice were either loaded onto a horse-drawn wagon using ice tongs as in the photo, or floated like rafts through channels of water to the shoreline.

The wagons loaded with ice blocks were then hauled to a storage house constructed of thick wooden walls or stone. The ice was stacked in layers with each layer cov-ered with saw dust so they would not stick together.

During summer and fall, the Ice Man would load his horse-drawn wagon and walk through neighborhoods announcing “Ice for sale, ice for sale.” Residents would use an ice sign displayed in a window telling the delivery man how big an ice block to deliver.

Based on the window sign indicating the desired pounds (12, 25, 50 or 100), a block would be weighed, carried to the house and placed in the kitchen ice box. Carroll’s Grocery in Lakeside and other markets typi-cally requested 100-pound blocks.

The natural ice from the lake was used only to chill food and bever-ages in the ice box. It was not used in glasses to chill beverages since natural ice was exposed to animal waste during the harvest.

The ice harvesting business began to melt away around 1910 with the invention of equipment that made pure ice. By the 1930s, the develop-ment of refrigerators brought an end to large scale ice making.

In addition to the commercial business of ice harvesting, there were other ice activities, including skating, fishing and ice boating. Today, you will occasionally see people out on the ice fishing when winter tem-peratures are cold enough, but ice boating is rarely seen today on Lake Erie.

Historical photographs show ice boats had flat bottoms with wooden runners. The person would sit or lie on the flat space and operate two sails; the main sail and jib sail. If the wind was right, the boats could reach speeds up to 70 mph. With no braking ability, the boater had to manipulate the sails just right when approaching the shore or another boat. Some talent, indeed!

BY JACKIE BIRD MAYOR, VILLAGE OF MARBLEHEAD

Editor’s note: View Mayor Bird’s State of the Village in its entirety at thebeacon.net.

January 2015 marks the 124th Anniversary of the incorporation of the Village of Marblehead. From 1891 to present day, our village remains a promi-nent commonwealth for both residents and visitors.

As Mayor, I reflect back to when I first became a council member in 1997. At that time, as is now, I have always considered myself fortunate to have followed in the footsteps of the previous dedicated administrations that helped form our community. Their leadership, dedication

and set standards have pro-duced a strong municipal-ity that will sustain future generations. Every elected official that has served, or is currently serving, has done so with the best inter-est of the Village of Marble-head in mind. As I look at our current administration and employees, I am proud to say that this great lega-cy continues. Our team is strong and our goal is com-mon; the goal to sustain our fine village to its fullest po-tential with keeping future generations in mind.

Our current administra-tion remains unified under the guidance of our elected Village Council. Our vet-eran members consist of

President Pro Tem John Starcher, Councilwoman An-gie Kukay, Councilman Dean Dorko, and Councilman Duane Myers. In 2014, we gained two new council mem-bers; Councilman David Redett and Councilman Ron Royhab. This dedicated group of individuals offers 110% for the love of their community with limited time, limited funding and limited compensation or praise.

The Village of Marblehead is a peninsula and even though it consists of one long shoreline, we actually have no public lakefront property for public use. This adminis-tration would like to preserve a small portion of the lake-front of this historic peninsula as open space for future generations. With the strength and assistance of many, I feel we can achieve this ever so important goal for cur-rent and future generations.

In closing, I assure the residents and employees this administration will continue to build on past efforts. We will focus on infrastructure improvements. We will focus on employee compensation and retention. We will focus on meeting the needs of the village with our continued growth. This administration vows to evaluate each situ-ation and act in the most viable means for health, safety, and welfare of its employees, residents and visitors.

The goal established with our fore-fathers in 1891 con-tinues in 2015 as we seek to retain the Village of Marble-head as a prominent commonwealth of opportunity for all.

May the year 2015 be prosperous in continuing our goals for our current residents and future generations.

May God bless the Village of Marblehead, Township of Danbury, County of Ottawa, State of Ohio and The Unit-ed States of America, now and always.

Carol Dusdieker and Margarita Denen-burg will perform for the Musical Arts Series in Port Clinton on Saturday, Feb-ruary 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Firelands Presby-terian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd., Port Clinton. Their program will be a mix of art and comic songs and jazzy musi-cal theatre by French composer Nadia Boulanger and her “American proteges.” Both performers are on the faculty of Heidelburg University. Dr. Carol Dus-dieker received her masters and doc-torate degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has an ex-citing performance background, having performed with various opera companies and symphonies throughout the United States including Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Cleveland, Des Moines Opera, and Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. This is her second appearance in Port Clinton. Dr. Denenburg won her first piano com-

petition at the age of eight, gave her first European concert performance in her teens and has been garnering awards and honors ever since. Born in the So-viet Union, Denenbully and her fam-ily emigrated in 1990 with the fall of the Soviet Union, and she eventually landed full scholarships to pursue undergradu-ate and masters degrees at the Univer-sity of Arizona and her doctorate at the University of Southern California. In addition to her academic work, she also performs frequently, both as a soloist and in collaboration with other artists. Following the performance, the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council will host a reception for the audience to meet and welcome the performers. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door; stu-dents are admitted free of charge. Spon-sors for this performance are the Stouffer Family and the Catawba Island Club.

Musical Arts Series continues February 7

ABLE classes are available at the Ottawa County Resource Centre in Oak Harbor for adults interested in improving ba-sic skills, obtaining a GED or preparing to go to college. The Vanguard-Sentinel Adult Basic and Literacy Education (ABLE) program offers free ABLE classes at the OCRC to help adults improve their reading, math or writing skills, to prepare for the GED test and to get ready for college or an adult certificate training program.

Adult learners can obtain the GED to earn the satisfaction of receiving a high school credential and to create a pathway to a

better future. Students enrolling into the ABLE classes at the Ottawa County Resource Centre and meeting the eligibility re-quirements will be able to take an official GED practice test for free to determine their readiness for the official GED test.

Orientation to the ABLE program is required before enroll-ment into class. Attend orientation to set goals, complete place-ment testing and develop an individualized learning plan.

The next orientation dates are Feb. 19 at 5 p.m., Mar. 5 at 10 a.m. and Mar. 19 at 5 p.m. To schedule call the OCRC at 419-898-3688 ext 270.
