The Beacon August 18 & 19, 2018

We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life

Center Gym between worship services.

Our Vision Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries

through worship, discipleship, and mission.

Our Mission REACH, TEACH, and SEND

We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal

life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Worship Services Break Free

Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory.

Traditions

At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service.

Connect

At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns.

Freedom

At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Staff Updates

On behalf of J.D. Peacock and the Staff Parish Committee we are pleased to announce that Mr. Steve Larson will be our new Church Administrator. Steve will begin his new role this week on August 20, 2018. We look forward to Steve’s imminent addition to the Shalimar staff. Steve comes with a wealth of experience and education that will serve our Shalimar UMC well as the new Administrator. Steve has also been parish administrator of St. Simons. He is a graduate of University of West Florida with a B.S. in Accounting and a Finance minor. He is also a certified CPA. Among his other expertise includes experience with technology, websites, newsletters, customer service, and logistics. Steve is married and his wife’s name is Renee. They are long time members of St. Simons Episcopal Church located on the sound in Fort Walton Beach. In the coming weeks, I hope you will take the time to drop by and welcome Steve to Shalimar. As Steve begins, let me take this time to express my heartfelt appreciation to Jimmy McAdams. Jimmy has made tremendous contributions as Church Administrator over the past year. He has given excellent oversight to both our administrative and campus staff. He has also given leadership to many physical improvements on our campus. He was indispensable in the final negotiations with the new Presbyterian property addition. Jimmy knew he would hold this role a maximum of two years. As it turns out he packed about two years of work into one. As Jimmy humorously states it, “If I would have started sooner, I would have stayed longer.” We are so grateful to Jimmy and his wife Connie and their many contributions for the good of Shalimar UMC. Jimmy’s retirement is closing a chapter as Church Administrator but continuing his active participation as a member of our church. As a result of this change, Barry Steiner will be transitioning out as Financial Officer. Last year, Barry decided to retire as Church Administrator but later agreed to partner with Jimmy and split responsibilities. This agreement of splitting duties was only sanctioned for Jimmy as Administrator and Barry as Financial Officer. The roles will now be combined again as Steve assumes being the Church Administrator. I want to thank Barry for his countless contributions to our church as Financial Officer and in his previous role as Church Administrator. Shalimar is truly a stronger church financially because of Barry’s leadership. He has been the best I have ever seen in this role. The good news of this transition is that Barry and his wife Renata will remain active in the Church. Renata will continue as our membership secretary and I have already found a volunteer position for Barry!

We are grateful to our SPR for their great work in 2018. Our church is realizing some new momentum through our staff additions and other good things happening in the life of our congregation. We look forward to the contributions Steve will make to our church and staff team. May the Lord bless all in this time of transition for Jimmy, Barry, and Steve.

TODAY’S SERMON NOTES:

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals

Faith Parry, Connection Pastor

[email protected]

Have you ever seen God do something amazing? Did other people see it too? What did you do with the attention people gave to God's amazing thing? Peter allowed the Holy Spirit to move through him, healing the lame man outside the temple and witnessing God's power. Then they walked into the temple together. The people in the temple witnessed the effects of God's power and Peter took the opportunity to witness to them. Read Acts 3:12-15. When was the last time you gave testimony to God's power as a witness

to your faith? How have people responded when you gave credit to the power of God in

your life or other people's lives? Read Acts 3:16. What does "through faith" mean to you? Was it Peter's faith or the lame man's faith that healed him? Do you feel you have enough faith? Read Acts 3:17-23. Do you feel you do things in ignorance? Do you ever excuse others for acting in ignorance? What is the difference in ignorance and not listening to God? Read Acts 3:24-26. How have you blessed someone because of your relationship with Jesus? Do you see yourself as a part of Abraham's family? Why or why not? This week, work on your faith story. Visit bit.ly/2LUKFBy to learn more about developing what God has done in your life so that you can share it with others.

After School Camp After School Camp is underway and Registration is still open with some slots available. We have over 50 children that we pick up from the local schools. We learn about God in our daily devotions, serve a healthy snack, have homework time, crafts, and play. We are in need of volunteers for reading buddies and homework helpers from 3:15-4:00 pm. Our mission is to offer a safe, Christian, and loving environment for children after school. With that, we are seeking scholarship funds to help those that need assistance with their tuition. Prayers are always needed!

SUPPER CLUB- Started this past Wednesday! ASC kids had a great time joining our Children’s Ministry for Choir and Kids Club. Sign up weekly for Supper Club by Tuesday 5:30 pm, $3.00 for a child dinner. Call or email me.

Summer Camp

What an amazing Summer it was! We had over 70 families that chose our program. The children truly enjoyed being on our campus and learning about God through our weekly themes and as we went out in the community on our field trips. Thank you to all who donated, prayed, and shared the space with us.

A Request for Prayer

In the upcoming months Shalimar UMC is going to be very busy. Look in the Beacon and listen to the announcements on Sunday mornings to see what events are coming soon. Even doing that will not always give you a complete list

because there is so much going on that the entire list cannot be covered in the space available in the Beacon and time available on Sunday mornings.

This all leads me to the focus of his article. There is a great need for all of us to be in prayer for Shalimar UMC, especially during these times. We have some individual and church decisions to be made that will set the course of growth for SUMC for years to come. God has a plan and we need to be praying and listening to see the vision He has for us. There is no limit to what can be done if we are in tune with what God wants of us, as individuals and as a Church. Read Ephesians 3:20-21.

Our Prayer emphasis during Draw the Circle and Awakening this year was just a beginning. Our study of Acts also gives us an opportunity to grow even more. Can we be as willing as the Disciples were then? Max Lucado prays this prayer before each of his sermons on the book of Acts. “Dear Lord, Thank you for your wonderful ACTS. What you did then would you do again? What you did through them, would you do through us? In Jesus Name AMEN.” I plan to lead a six to eight week class on Max Lucado’s book Before Amen to begin around the first of October. Watch for a date and time to be announced.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month and plans are being made to once again do 31 days of prayer for our Pastors as we did last year. I also plan to include a focus to help us pray for Shalimar UMC during that time.

If we pray for our Pastors, SUMC, and each other, could it be said “The Sky is the Limit”?
