Admiral W.H. Smyth defined a sailor “…as a man trained in managing a ship, either at sea or in harbor. A thorough sailor is the same as mariner or seaman but as everyone of the crew is dubbed a sailor, there is much difference in the absolute meaning of the term. Seaman, this is a term seldom bestowed among seafaring men upon their associates unless they are known to be pre-eminent in every duty, one who never issues a command which he is not competent to execute himself.”
If you don’t have a boat or know how to sail, now is the time to change from a landlubber (“a useless long-shorer”) to a sailor, and maybe one day become a seaman. OK, let’s get started – BCYC has two 20-foot Santana sailboats. Any member wishing to learn to sail will be charged $35 to $50 per hour, including the instructor and boat. Our outstanding instructors will teach you how to sail and race, and provide the necessary boat-handling knowledge to make you comfortable with your newly learned skills.
Upon your satisfactory display of seamanship, you as a member can reserve these great boats and go sailing in the harbor. They can be sailed in the Taco Tuesday races, where they have performed quite well, or on a romantic afternoon sail around the bay. I encourage any member who does not have a boat, but wants to get on the water, to take advantage of this great opportunity available to you. Then, when you “come along side” the bar in the Columbia Room, you will “tack and reef,” “come about and reach” and “run” with the best of those Jack Tar seamen. Every one of us needs to go beyond the jetty, to discover what is out there, as well as what is inside each of us waiting to be discovered.

It has been wonderful to see great attendance at recent club events, with more than 400 members and guests enjoying the Easter buffet, and sellouts on Mother’s Day and recent Prime Rib dinners. Over the past few
months, Chef Georges Rapicault and I have seen our food costs increase, something being faced by restaurants across the country, as reported in a recent L.A. Timesarticle. We work daily to make wise purchasing decisions so that these costs are not passed on to our members. While many area clubs increased their Easter buffet price to as much as $38.95 per person, BCYC stayed at $32 per person. Volume helps immensely and we appreciate your strong support.
As we go through this period of inflationary costs, reservations become even more important and I would like to remind members that BCYC has a 72-hour cancellation policy that we adhere to. Chef Georges prepares for events based on the number of reservations made – this allows for better control of waste. It is important to indicate the number of children included in your reservation. If there is a no-show on our reservation list, please keep in mind that the cost is still incurred and you will be charged accordingly.
Effective, consistent communication is the lifeline of any club. We continue to work on ways to improve
communication with our membership and recently made the decision to give Jacque Pane the additional responsibility of managing the utilization of the many communication tools at the club. What this means is that instead of several people having access to Julie Shupe—all giving her projects, sometimes with conflicting information—Jacque will be the point person. Julie is an independent contractor working 100% from her home. To ensure that posters, weekly e-blasts and inserts in The Masthead are all produced in a timely manner with correct information, she now works directly with Jacque and me. Providing event details six or more weeks in advance will allow for a well-managed and streamlined process. We look forward to working with you to make each event a success, with maximum turnout.
We have come a great distance since I first arrived at BCYC, in the quality of our posters, fliers and other communication items. Julie’s creative talents are so amazing – we have members waiting in line to be given her posters following an event! It has been fun to see what talent and technology has allowed us to accomplish.
Good clubs are made great because of the caliber of staff who faithfully perform their duties every day. Many of our employees are college students, and with the school year coming to an end, I want to congratulate those who have graduated. They have a big job balancing their school work with their duties at the club — I want to thank the entire staff for their dedication, hard work and smiles. BCYC is truly blessed to have such wonderful staff!

As the start of summer nears, we anticipate little boats racing in the harbor, an increase in the number of kids at the club and in the pool, and burgers on the patio on Friday nights. These are sure signs that BCYC’s Junior Summer Sailing Program is in full operation. This summer, the kids will have something new to look forward to using – the fully functional ramp from the boatyard to the docks, capable of handling boats from Sabots
to CFJs and 420s. This gives us more flexibility for launching our juniors when the regular launch ramp by the compass rose is unavailable. Thanks to Dave and Donna Janes for their awesome generosity in making this ramp a reality.
Then there is the transition taking place in the Junior Room. By the time the Summer Program gets under way, the upgrades to this area should be completed. Our coaches and staff will strongly encourage a sense of ownership and pride with our juniors in keeping BCYC’s Junior Room looking ship-shape. Thank you, BCYC Board of Directors, for your continued support of our juniors as we look forward to a successful, safe and fun summer.

Summer Sailing Truths
The summer sailing season is upon us. With the start of our six-week program comes a new crop of sailors anxious to get their Sabots wet. Many of our juniors have been competing throughout the off-season, but some will be knocking a little dust off as they drag their boats from storage.
With this come the typical annoyances, like sails flapping on the docks, sailors enjoying a dip in the pool and classes taking place around the club. Despite these minor issues, it is important to remember the good our Summer Program does for our juniors. The lessons on the water extend far beyond those learned in a classroom. Independence, perseverance, resourcefulness, sportsmanship and responsibility are just the tip of the iceberg.
I remember learning some of these truths when I was a junior sailor, like quickly discovering the importance of tying knots correctly after having to swim out to save my boat when it came untied once or twice. It seems the lessons sailing teaches are almost always learned on the fly. When we can connect them to a big blooper they tend to stick with us. I hope that all of our summer sailors will have the opportunity to make a mistake so they can correct it for next time.
As the Junior Summer Program begins, we are excited for the new season, new coaches and opportunities to learn all the things that sailing

wind and kids running around.
This summer, we have some positive changes, including the arrival of Sailing Director Shannon Heausler, and Head Coach Nathan Dunham, plus many new coaching staff. As always, we will make it our priority to keep the club orderly and under control this summer sailing season. As we did in 2010, the Junior Board of Directors will host the Friday Night Burger Bash and Sabot races for adults and juniors directly off the club docks. On behalf of the board and all BCYC Junior Program participants, we thank you for your incredible support of our many endeavors.

Honolulu Race of 1981
Course: San Pedro to Diamond Head Light, 2225 nautical miles
Handicap Rule: Ocean Racing Rule of IOR as modified by TPYC
Start: July 3, 1300 hours, Pacific Daylight Time
First raced in 1906 with three boats, the 1981 race saw 77 boats racing in the Los Angeles to Hawaii Transpac Race. That year, BCYC had a club record number of entries. They were: Pele, Jim Emmi; Shandu, Mike Braun; Temerity, Ted Kerr; Warrior, Jan Cassel; Winterhawk, Hal Day and Roger Metcalf. The crew on Emmi’s Swan 44 was composed of Grace Degenhardt, Joe Degenhardt, Jack Hart, Phil Larson, Chuck McGregor, Ridley Politski and Steve Wimsatt.
It took us 10 days to go the 2225 miles to Honolulu. We experienced a variety of conditions, from sailing in treacherous conditions with our lee helm down, to complete doldrums for hours on end. The skipper and crew made the most of the lack of wind, taking the opportunity to skinny dip, which brought high fives
from my lecherous daughter, a chip off the old block. The heaviest weather we experienced the whole trip was in the Molokai channel. Moving at 12 knots, we were rolling and dipping the spinnaker pole and the main boom from side to side in the heavy seas, creating rooster tails in the water. We kept binoculars on the horizon to warn us of gales coming so that we could drop the spinnaker and ride the gale out with a storm jib, then back up with the chute. From time to time, death rolls (AKA rolling the boat from beam to beam) caught us unprepared, which can be very exciting to say the least. After all that, we still blew out the spinnaker and had to go to a heavy genoa for the rest of the way to the finish. Pele and her crew were up to the challenge, finishing fourth in class. Upon arrival we were greeted with kisses and leis, an experience of a lifetime.
The first start for Transpac 2011 is July 4.
Super Sabot Series Finishes in aWhisperWith barely enough wind to allow for all three final races to be run, the eight-month- long “Super Sabot Saturday” series, sponsored by Balboa Yacht Club, completed its sequence of eighteen races April 16 with short, in-harbor courses that took some two hours of crafty sailing to complete. Twenty five adult men and women sailors known
as the “Briny Bunch” have competed in this series on the third Saturday of each month since last September. It was the fourteenth running of this traditional regatta and the final day was composed of 15 entries, the most of any of the preceding races of the series. This race featured the surprise last minute entry of Mark Gaudio, possessor of 14 Sabot National Championships. Mark was challenged by local hot shot Molly Lynch who claimed first for the day, posting four points, but neither factored in the final rankings of the event. The Andrews Perpetual trophy was won by Terese Ivory of Bahia Corinthian and Alamitos Bay Yacht Clubs with a total of 69 points. Nancy Mellon, Bob Reilly, Lynn Acosta and Beverly Roberts, all from BYC, followed in second thru fifth place. This was the first time in the history of the “SSS” that the winner was not from BYC. Congratulations Terese.

May was an eventful month for Las Commodoras. No sooner did we wind down from our dazzling annual Progressive luncheon at the end of April, Opening Day was upon us. The Las Commodoras Board of Directors had the honor of welcoming all arriving dignitaries, pinning on flowers and helping organize seating. We even served the festive arrival drink, Junior Staff Commodore Don Bernard’s “Tumbling Goat” creation.
Las Commodoras strongly supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society fundraising efforts through participation on committees, including helping to chair the successful Poker Run on Closing Night.
The “Tales of Las Commodoras” May luncheon, chaired by Jeanie Lowry,
featured four of our BCYC ladies giving us a glimpse into their lives and successes. Thanks to Jill Bernard, Silvia Breeden, Jane Hoffman Horst and Neilia LaValle for sharing their fascinating stories with us.
Set aside June 15 and be part of our High Tea luncheon. Chaired by the incomparable Kari Konapelsky, it is certain to be a delightful day to enjoy traditions, friends and delicious food. Find your favorite hat and make reservations early.
We have a new project — to organize and publish a new BCYC cookbook. If you have a favorite recipe you would like to submit, please contact Nancy Isbell who has graciously offered to compile the recipes.

It’s a Boat!We are proud to announce the delivery of a new addition to the BCYC family. Vital statistics are:
Despite her young age, Emmi went immediately to work providing the platform for one of the two Leukemia Cup Regatta venues. Although Race Committee always enjoys a day on the water with great food, we particularly enjoy the opportunity to be a part of this regatta.
Race Committee is counting the minutes before the start of the second annual Around the Islands Race, June 10-12, with celebrity entrants, all-women crews and much more. A big thanks again to Oakley for providing their world-famous sunglasses as prizes for the first-place skippers.
We’re also kicking off the Hugh Angelman Series June 18. This is one of the three Series (Bogart, Angelman and Knudson) that count toward the coveted BCYC Ocean Racing Series trophy — three series, nine races! Register online now.
Taco Tuesday mania has already begun. For the uninitiated, this is where we race and party every Tuesday evening through the end of August. No boat? No problemo! Boat owners are always happy to take additional crew. Come to the club by 5 p.m. and somebody will invite you aboard.
By the way, if you join Race Committee, you get to be seen on the prettiest committee boat in the harbor! It is definitely the best deal in town.

Comment Cards Count
In my few months as Food and Beverage Committee chair, I have been amazed and impressed with the many compliments, concerns and creative ideas our members have regarding food and beverage at the club. These have come via email, phone, in-person and some on cocktail napkins – all are appreciated and reviewed by the appropriate staff members.
The BEST way to have your voice heard is to complete and submit a comment card. These are available in all dining venues (just ask your server) or in the comment card stand located just outside the Columbia Room. Comment cards are the direct pipeline to club management from members regarding food, beverage and service. They are an important tool, used to improve the food and beverage you consume, as well as the service you receive. All comments, from your glowing reviews to the details of less-than-stellar experiences, are reviewed and acted upon. Creative ideas are also appreciated.
Some things that have been instituted as a direct result of comment cards are: improved wait staff training concerning menu knowledge, wine pairings for meals, Lounge Night appetizer specials becoming part of the Columbia Room menu, revamping Sunday Night Supper Club, the recent Happy Hour event, and wine and beer by-the-glass offerings presented at the table in the Columbia Room. The next time you are at the club enjoying a beverage, dining and being with friends, write about your experience. Comments count.

Let’s Go Fishing
“Today was a perfect day for hunting swordfish. I looked for fins until my eyes ached.” (Zane Grey) The BCYC all-species fishing tournament in Newport Harbor (June 11) is fast approaching. The event schedule is:
• Fishing: 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. • Fish weigh-in: 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.• Barbecue: 5 p.m. –7 p.m.• Awards: 7 p.m.
There are already several companies who have pledged great items for our awards ceremony. Feel free to contact me by email at [email protected] if you know of other companies that might have items
to donate for this great family event.
The format will be easy and simple. Qualified fishing line is six-, 10- and 20-pound test. Points will be awarded for all legal-sized fish caught based on line test: 30 points, six-pound test; 20 points, 10-pound test; and 10 points, 20-pound test.
Make sure you have your fishing license and gear. Let me know if you need a ride on one of our member fishing boats, and bring your children and grandchildren for this free, one-day fishing tournament. Update to my May Masthead article: the creation of the 36 new Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) has been challenged in court by the Ocean Access Protection Fund (OAPF). This means that these new MPAs will not be developed in the near future, pending legal developments. For those interested, a fund-raising event will be held at the Atrium Hotel in Irvine, May 22 at 5:30 p.m. This will provide an opportunity to learn more about this important issue.
Have a great fishing season.

Summer events at BCYC are always something to look forward to, kicking off with Taco Tuesdays at the club. Plan to participate in the Around the Islands Race, whether racing or simply enjoying the send-off and awards presentation parties. There is something for everyone, including Las Commodoras’ High Tea luncheon, Father’s Day Brunch and Car Show, Isthmus Cruise and the start of the Junior Summer Sailing Program.
