Wyoming Fly Casters 3

President’s letterHello Again Flycasters, Sept. 2015

Another month has come and gone and we are slipping into fall. We should still have many beautiful days to be on the water as we wait for the flows to drop off and the browns beginning to spawn. I hope that many of us can take advantage and get out on the water.

As I’m sure you have noticed this edition of the Backcast is quite a bit smaller than usual. Our editor Cheryl Wilson, who continues to do a wonderful job, has asked that every other month be an abbreviated issue due to her work schedule, new baby, and life. Next month you can expect a full newsletter followed in November by a shorter version. Every issue will include a President’s letter, events calendar, and any information that needs to be passed on before the next issue is sent. Please continue to send pictures and anything else that you would like to see in the newsletter to her for its inclusion.

Tensleep 2015 is in the books with 15 in attendance. The fishing, as usual, was very good for those hungry little brookies and the food was great. Gene and Deb Theriault provided us with BBQ ribs on Friday night, Theresa Tschetter once again cooked up her gumbo for Saturday night, and Matt was back at the helm and whipped up pancakes and eggs for Sunday breakfast. The wind was a little chilly but the rain and hail missed us. I’m already looking forward to next year.

Right after returning home from Tensleep I joined Randy Stalker, Ed Rate, Bob Fischer, and Gary Ross on a Cutt-Slam trip to the Tri-Basin Divide. It was a great trip in some beautiful country but I don’t think that I have ever worked that hard to catch fish. My application should be in Cheyenne at the time you are reading this and my next trip to Bridger Nat. Forest will not have as much pressure on it.

For the month of September we have the Dick DePaemelere Memorial Outing on the Tongue River from the 4th-6th under the guidance of Randy Stalker and Bob Fischer. There are not many that have signed up to go but I hope that more can attend than signed up. There is good fishing and of course wonderful country. The weather can get a little snarky but the trip is worth it.

On the 9th our annual fall BBQ will be held at the club house in lieu of the general meeting. Those who are interested in lending a hand at the grill are asked to come between 5:30 and 6 and we plan to start eating at 6:30. The club will provide the burgers, brats, and condiments. Please consider bringing a side dish to pass. You should have received an email notification a few days ago about the picnic and I hope to get another reminder sent out just before the event.

Looking forward to October; at the general meeting on the 14th we will have a representative from the Izaak Walton League speaking to us about their organization. On that following Saturday the 17th, Casey will be hosting the outing on the Miracle Mile and will be cooking a stream-side lunch. Look for more details and directions in the next few weeks to come.

This looks like a good place to wrap this up. Remember to check your emails for “breaking news” and try to get out on the water.

Letter from the EditorFlycasters, As Lee mentioned in his letter, this is an abbreviated issue of the Backcast. Due to my work schedule, my baby boy, and everything else going on in my life, things have been a little bit crazy. I appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience. My goal is to put out a full newsletter every other month, or if that doesn’t work out, a quarterly newsletter. Every month, members will at least receive this abbreviated version. I want to make sure that everyone is kept up to date of things happening in the club. Even as I type this letter, the newsletter is already a few days late, which I do apologize for.

Lee and I took Roger on a vacation to Buffalo just last weekend, with a day trip up to the mountains. We decided to try a little fishing while we were there. Lee Tschetter told us about a great little spot to fish that was an easy hike with a little one in tow. After a very short, easy hike that started at the lake trailhead, we arrived at a beautiful meadow. I got into position, tossed my line in the water with a little ant attached, and I had a fish on my line within seconds. With Lee’s help, I was able to release him back into the water. I caught one more after that, and then Lee gave it a try and had success too. All in all, we ended up fishing for about five minutes, but it was a fantastic trip. Roger seemed to enjoy the hike, and Lee was able to get some really great photos out of the trip.

Enough about our trip. I hear that the club outing to Ten Sleep was a great success. I hope that the Tongue River outing is equally fun and successful. I want to say congratulations to Lee Tschetter for completing his Cut-Slam this year! I know I can’t wait to see pictures. I hope to include this in the Backcast in the near future.

Don’t forget that the general meeting this month, on Wednesday September 9th, will be replaced with the fall BBQ. Please plan to arrive at 6:30 p.m., and bring a side dish or a dessert to share. I hope to see everyone there! We will provide the meat, buns, etc.

Also, some of you may have already received invitations to register for the Platte River Cleanup for National Public Lands Day. This year it falls on Saturday, September 26. If you would like more information or need help registering, please don’t hesitate to contact me at 267-1903.

Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to submit your photos and ideas for future issues. Upcoming topics will include- more fly patterns, recipes (including my mom’s Ten Sleep Gumbo, photo essays, and more! I am also planning to bring back the Flycaster of the month survey, so please plan to submit a questionnaire, if you haven’t already done so.
