“Twenty-five years ago, we united two brands that represent the essence of what it means to be proudly made in America,” said Mark Paup, President and CEO, Zippo and Case. “With more than two centuries of history between them, Zippo and Case have been intertwined into some of this country’s most significant moments, and we couldn’t be more excited to see what the future has in store as both brands continue to grow.”

Since joining the Zippo family of brands, Case has seen numerous significant and notable landmarks. In 2014, the brand celebrated its 125th anniversary with a nearly $10 million renovation of their Bradford-based factory. The renovations included a complete remodel of the factory that was originally constructed in 1975, including new equipment and floor configurations that allowed for better efficiency, productivity and quality.

    Hello, everyone!

If you were to rate your communication skills on a scale of 1-10, what score would you give yourself? How about your business or organization? Would it score lower or higher? A common theme we’re hearing lately is people making comments like, “There should be _____,” or, “Someone should offer _____.” More often than not, our answer is, “There already is!” or, “Let me tell you who does that.”

My advice, and I certainly many times need to practice what I preach, is to not assume that people know what you’re doing, what services you offer, what products you carry, etc. It may seem repetitive to you, but sharing your message, over and over, is absolutely essential to making sure that customers and business to business contacts know who are you, what you do, and how you can help them, personally or professionally. Please take the time to read the monthly Chamber News and our eblasts to learn what info your fellow members are sharing. And don’t hesitate to let us know when you have a message that you want to get out there - we can help through those channels, our Facebook page, and more!

As always, stop in, say hello, and share your ideas with us - you’re always welcome!

Volunteers from Futures Rehabilitation Center, Inc., who are part of the Community Participation Supports (CPS) program can be found watering flower barrels and planters up and down Main Street almost every day, barring rainy weather. The program was implemented through a federal initiative and is funded by the county and state. A rotation of more than 30 individuals in the program have watered the Main Street planters that were planted prior to the Memorial Day holiday. The group also swept the sidewalks along Boylston Street to rid them of debris left over from winter. “This is a program that was instituted last fall to get individuals out of the workshop and into the community,” said Brian Good, who supervises the volunteers. “It’s designed to make the community more familiar with Futures volunteers and the volunteers more familiar with the community. For more information on the CPS program or the supported employment program at Futures, contact Good at [email protected] or call 814-368-4101, ext. 230.

Historic Downtown Bradford’s FarmersMarket will be held on Fridays from 2 to 6pm in Veterans’ Square through October. Local growers who are interested in participating can find registration forms on the Downtown Bradford Farmers Market Facebook page and at Northwest Bank on Main Street.

For the first time in its 21-year existence, motorcycle enthusiasts will be joined by bicyclists in separate runs for the Kids and Cancer Benefit Run on July 28. Organizer Dave Geitner said the 21st annual benefit run will be held in conjunction with the inaugural Pedal for Kids and Cancer bicycle run coordinated by Pete Dzirkalis, owner of the Just Riding Along bicycle shop in Bradford. A $25 registration fee will be required of participants of both the motorcyle and bicycle runs. The registration fee will include a Kids and Cancer pin and a food voucher for establishments in the Main Street area, according to Geitner, who noted the organization will also promote downtown businesses during the event. Registration for the motorcyle run will be 9 to 11:45am at the Zippo/Case parking lot on Congress Street. Pre-registration is available at kidsandcancerbenefitrun.com. The motorcyle run will travel through downtown Bradford and Allegheny National Forest, with several stops along the way. According to Dzirkalis, there will be two bicycle rides: a 10-mile loop through downtown, McDowell Trail and the Langmaid Lane area and a more challenging 35-mile ride through Allegany State Park for more experienced riders. A modified 5-mile loop will also be available. A safety event for children and families on Main Street near Veterans Square will be coordinated by Main Street Manager Chelsea Schwab. There will also be a bike show in Veterans’ Square. Run participants are automatically included in the bike show, others will be asked to donate $10 to register. The runs will conclude with a downtown block party and live entertainment. For more information, contact Geitner at 814-331-8427, Dzirkalis at 814-363-9101 or visit kidsandcancerbenefitrun.com or Pedal for Kids and Cancer on Facebook.

This year’s seventh annual We Gotta Regatta fundraiser brought in an outstanding number of kayaks, canoes, boats and handmade watercrafts to float from Browntown Road trailhead to Crook Farm. So many, in fact, that a new record was set, according to Steve Kresge, spokesperson for the Tuna Valley Trail Association. There were 250 craft launched at the Browntown trailhead. The number of participating crafts practically doubled since previous years, according to Kresge: in the past the event would have an average between 130 and 150 crafts.

After the watercrafts completed their floats down the Tunungwant Creek they came to rest at Crook Farm on Seaward Avenue, where there was live entertainment performed by Ronan and Copeland, raffles, a pig roast and a drawing for a Town Vapor 10 model Kayak, donated by the Sportsman’s Outlet.

“The proceeds from this event go towards the maintenance and development of our trails, and this year’s event turnout was outstanding,” said Kresge. “This has been the best year yet; it is amazing how the community came together in support.”

“It’s designed to make the community more familiar with Futures volunteers and the volunteers more familiar with the community. of Joining ForcesIconic American Brands Will Mark 25 Years of Unified Ownership with Zippo/Case Museum Festivities on July 21

This year, Zippo Manufacturing Company commemorates the 25th anniversary of its acquisition of the W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company brand, a moment that marked the unification of two iconic American manufacturers rooted in Bradford, PA. On Saturday, July 21, Zippo and Case will host a day-long Silver Anniversary Celebration of this momentous occasion at the Zippo/Case Museum in Bradford. The event is free and open to the public.

For more info about what will be included in the Silver Anniversary festivities, see page 11!

A recent caller asked, “What’s that new ‘Swig and Swine’ store on Main Street?” We were happy to share with her that Swig & Swine and the Chasin’ Bacon Challenge are events that the YWCA Bradford is hosting on July 21st. And they are going to be awesome! (Really...who doesn’t like bacon?) As the YWCA Bradford Facebook page says: Swig & Swine and the Chasin’ Bacon Challenge are both kind of a “PIG” deal! Tickets for Swig & Swine are on sale at the YWCA Bradford and on the YWCA Bradford website. You can also register for the Chasin’ Bacon Challenge on their website!
