Business and Industry Outlook 2014As the historic City of Bradford continues to grow, local member businesses announce new and exciting updates...

OECD-City of Bradford continues to work to improve city offerings. One goal this year is to finish the Pine Street Project by adding new curbs and sidewalks on the east side of the street, reconstructing brick pavement and installing new light poles on both sides of the street. Completed parts of the project include a pedestrian bridge crossing from East Washington Street to Pine Street, a new parking lot on Pine Street and landscaping work.

American Refining Group underwent several upgrades in 2013, and their benefits continue into 2014. A unit was built to improve wastewater treatment in the Foster Brook area. The company also completed a three year project to upgrade its electrical distribution within the facility, improving ARG’S ability to isolate electrical issues.

Zippo Manufacturing Company has posted its best dollar volume year in the history of the company, according to Greg Booth, chief executive officer and president. This allows Zippo to make lighters as effectively as it has ever done and compete in the world market at a level not seen before.

Bradford Regional Medical Center is in the black for the third year in a row. It was a positive year from an operations standpoint and the hospital has a one percent operating margin. Renovations are underway at The Pavilion at BRMC, courtesy of the Bradford Hospital Foundation, which is funding the project. In the coming year, hospital officials will look to improve additional areas of the facility.

Bradford Area High School Career-Technical grows industry opportunities...

The career-technical program at Bradford Area High School offers a multitude of opportunities for boys and girls to succeed in college, or get into the workforce right out of high school. The students rotate through auto shop, machine shop, carpentry, electrical, business education and petroleum during their freshman year. They then can focus on a particular program or programs of interest in their sophomore year. There is a large volume of students who get accepted into apprenticeship programs right out of high school. The school keeps in close contact with business members, including Allegheny Bradford Corporation and Dresser Bradford. They look for students coming out of these programs so they can put them into an apprenticeship where they can train them and place them in the workforce.

Industry officials come directly to the high school to speak with students as well as interview them about opportunities.Entry-level jobs have offered pay anywhere from $14 to$18 an hour. Departments teach students how to work withbasic hand tools as well as to set up programming using a computer. Students are tested by making a manufactured part that is sent to local industry for inspection. The number of female students participating in the programs offered has been increasing in recent years. A number of them are going on to pursue engineering, and the information they receive gives them a strong foundation for success.

Hi Everyone,

I think spring is coming, because I saw a robin in my yard, and I trust that more than Punxsutawney Phil. With that said, it is time for our spring Annual Meeting and Awards, and we are all very excited to hold this annual event.

We will be honoring some great Bradfordian’s and businesses, and what I like most about the evening is that we get to thank our members for all that they do for our Chamber.

For our Directors’ Award this year’s recipient is Jeannine Schoenecker, COO at American Refining Group. Jeannine and her husband Brett have made such an impact on our community since they arrived, and they both are always ready to volunteer for community projects. Our winner for the Exemplary Business Award is Moments to Remember who has been an exciting success story. After being in business for only 11months, they moved to a bigger location, and are agreat addition to Main Street.

We had two other outstanding nominees for this award. Shults Toyota/Edmond Chevrolet has not only been an exemplary business, but they do many things to help our community. We are very lucky to have them as a business in Bradford!

(continued on page 9)

Top/middle rows: Moments to Remember opened their doors to us in March for Business After Hours. Owner Laurie Lindstrom was pleased to share with what Moments to Remember can do for your events, big or small, to make them extra special! Many thanks to Laurie and her husband Steve, and all who attended Business After Hours. We can all see why our members voted Moments to Remember this year’s winner of the Exemplary Business Award! Bottom row: CARE for Children was voted this year’s Community & Spirit Award winner. The services provided by CARE for Children have an incredible impact on so many young lives, and your fellow members certainly value your efforts and accomplishments!

YWCA Bradford and local officials will work to bring awareness to the problem of sexual assault during an

April event. “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” will be held April 24th in downtown Bradford. Registration and sponsorship information is available by calling the YWCA or by visiting their website. All funds raised will be used to fund local sexual assault services at the YWCA.

Bradford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary has announced a newly created“Artisan Gallery” within Heartstrings Gift Shop, located in BRMC’s main lobby. The unique venue displays original talent of BRMC employees, local crafters and artists.

St. Bernard’s School won meteorologistAndy Parker’s Weather Machine contest. Students received a suprise visit by Parker on St. Patrick’s Day to announce they had won. Principal Kim Mooney explained Parker broadcasts a new weather word each morning. Viewers then use the word to vote for their favorite school. The show of local support for the school was overwhelming. St. Bernard’s beat out 44 other schools to win. Parker will return April 7th with his weather machine presentation.

The Bradford Era’s website has a new look and significantly more content. The site, www.bradfordera.com, was re-designed to make it easier for visitors to navigate between local, state, national and international news as well as sports and outdoor news from the youth level to the pros. The site will carry expanded coverage of business, entertainment and lifestyles as well as additional opinion columns, editorials and letters to the editor.

KOA Speer Electronics, Inc. is evolving with new technology and an expandingproduct portfolio, including a plan to introduce more than 10 new products. Ron’s message...continued from page 3

We also had LabelPack Automation, Inc., located on Russell Boulevard, as another amazing business nominee. At their Business After Hours we learned of the quality work that they do for customers all over the country. It is so nice to have a manufacturer like LabelPack making great products right here in Bradford.

For our Community & Spirit Award, the winner was CARE for Children, who did an outstanding job last year raising money for a state of the art facility, and now they are able to give even greater service to the children in our area.

We also had two other very deservingnominees for this award. Gary Hoy, President of the Street Dreams Car Club, who exemplifies the Community & Spirit award. Gary is always thinking of the next thing that he can do to promote people coming to our community, and he has done a great job with the Autumn Daze car shows and holiday parade.

Finally, Fraternal Order of Eagles was our third nominee, who does so much for so many with their annual donations to many deserving organizations, includingtheir Eagles for Autism dice run that brought in $33,000 alone last year.

I’m glad I don’t have to vote, because they are all deserving of these two prestigious awards. We hope you can attend the Annual Meeting and help us celebrate the achievements of all of these great people.

As always, stop down to 121 Main Street, have a cup of coffee, and share your ideas! Ron

Let’s talk about...Recently, Smart Business Magazine featured Greg Booth, president/CEO of Zippo Manufacturing Company. We’re happy to share highlights of the article, available in full at http://www.sbnonline.com/pittsburgh-editions/17-pittsburgh-editions/27955-greg-booth-protects-and-diversifies-zippo-s-billion-dollar-brand-so-it-s-no-match-for-the-competition#.UzWA-oUvJi2

Brand recognition: After more than 10 years as president/CEO, Greg Booth is still amazed by the product’s brand recognition. In many places, there’s 90 percent brand awareness. When Japanese consumers were asked to name top American brands, their first responses were Coke, McDonald’s, Nike and Zippo. “Prior to coming to work at Zippo, I worked for two large companies — and on an ongoing basis we worked hard to build our brand and increase brand awareness,” Booth says. “But to get to the level of brand awareness that Zippo enjoys, that is Herculean at best. In the oil industry, if we had 25, 30, 35 percent brand awareness in a market, we were thrilled, and just wouldn’t think of spending the next umpteen-million to get to a level of 60 or 70 percent.”

Staying relevant: Zippo’s business has grown nearly 60 percent in the past 10 years. More than 90 percent of its business is still lighters and fuel, even though tobacco-related products are declining. Part of that is because of global sales — nearly 60 percent of Zippo’s sales are offshore. The other factor is becoming more of a lifestyle product. When creating products in your brand family or category, or even when creating a new brand, Booth says you need to stay relevant with whoever your target audience may be. When Booth first became CEO, the average age of a lighter buyer was 44 or 45 and rising, giving them an identity problem with younger generations. “Most brands want to at least influence young people or people early in their lives so they continue to buy the brand later in life,” Booth says. A 21-year-old who buys a pocket lighter now may purchase a candle lighter at 45. But if you want to be relevant to a younger target audience, the execution is critical, he says. You want to talk to them how they want to be spoken to, socializing with them where they live, which today is via social media. “We talk to them all the time,” Booth says. “We tell them what we’re doing, where we’re going, why we’re doing it. “You want to be in their face electronically. You want to be involved with something that means something to them, something they enjoy.” All that effort has paid-off. Today, the average age of a lighter buyer is in their mid-30s.

Launching new products: When Booth saw buying trends in the tobacco category 10 years ago, the company started working on developing new products. The strength of the brand name, however, has worked against the company. Booth says the more mature the market, the more challenging it is. “So, in our oldest market, the good ol’ U.S., it’s harder to diversify because when you say to consumers, ‘What would you think about buying a hand warmer from Zippo?’ sometimes the reaction is: ‘You mean the guys that make lighters? Why would I buy a hand warmer from those guys?’ Booth says you have to get retailers on board with putting the product on shelf space that already has velocity and profit. To keep from stretching its brand into something it shouldn’t, Booth says Zippo does a mountain of consumer research. “Research is a monumental first step. You have to find what your brand will support by way of a product,” he says. But research is just the first step. It also takes the right sales force, the right channel of distribution, the right public relations and media, and the correct level of dollar support, while not trying to launch too many new products at once.“You have to be committed, and I think the other thing you have to be — other than well-organized and smart — you have to be incredibly patient,” Booth says. Even with the challenges, Booth is excited about growing into more of a lifestyle brand, launching products in the outdoor recreational camper and patio categories.

Takeaways: 1. Aggressively protect your brand so others don’t dilute it. 2. Stay relevant with your target audience by relating to them. 3. Research thoroughly before launching new products.

What is the best business advice you ever received? One thing I was either told or learned over the years is that no matter who you work for or around — no matter what you think of the individual — if you listen and pay attention, you’re probably going to learn something from everybody.

I remember in one case, I learned what not to do. If you pay attention and are open-minded, you can learn something every day from your environment or the people you work around.

Ron

Describe your position at Little Power Shop? “While I used to work in the shop turning wrenches, most of my time is now consumed with running the day to day operations of the company. I work with each department in our company to keep things moving as smoothly as possible.”

How did you acquire this company & position? “I actually started Little Power Shop as a part-time business in 2007. As we continue to grow as a result of the hard work of a great staff, my position continues to become more management and marketing based.”

What is your favorite part of your job? “I love being able to get up each morning and come into a job I am passionate about. I love fast and powerful vehicles. Getting to not only work in the field but be a part of the industry on a larger level is a dream come true.”

What is the most challenging? “We have a lot going on. Managing a balance between our global online and phone sales, walk-in retail store, diesel repair shop, and aftermarket performance shop is sometimes a real challenge. We have also started manufacturing some of our own products. Keeping all of this managed is sometimes a real challenge.”

What do you like to do in your spare time? “It is important to us to support motorsports as much as possible. Being a huge fan of motorsports of all kinds, I spend a lot of free time attending events and automative related functions. I also like spending as much time as possible in the garage after hours tinkering on my own projects.”
