The BABC Christmas Lunch is a great Anglo-American and Anglo-Californian event. It confirms the special relationship the UK has with California. It is also great fun. And, since 2010 has been another challenging year for the global economy and for business, we all need to unwind and look forward to better things in 2011. The BABC is a major partner in the work the British Government does to promote UK-California trade and investment, which is a very signifi-cant portion of the overall UK-US economic picture. Mark your
calendars now, as the BABC Northern California will be hosting for the first time the Annual BABC Transatlantic Conference, from 11-13 May 2011 on the theme of Innovation - and where better to hold it? The BABC Conference will be a major part of BritWeek 2011, so we hope to see as many of you as possible at the Conference and other BritWeek events. Thanks to all of you for attending this year’s lunch and aparticular thank you to the sponsors, old and new, for their support.
Stuart O. Keirle, President, BABC Northern California
A very warm welcome to our 47th Annual Christmas Luncheon. Asyou know this event is much more than just a social gathering for our members and their guests. It is also an opportunity to give something back to our community, and for the fifth year running we have chosen Raphael House to be the principal beneficiary of your collective generosity. I would like to thank all who have contributed so generously to this premier seasonal event in thecity of San Francisco. Finally, on behalf of our Board, I would like
to extend my thanks to the BABC members, staff and volunteers, who have worked so tirelessly to make this a very successful and enjoyable event.
We are delighted to welcome Liam Mayclem as our Master of Ceremonies for the sixth year. Liam is an Emmy Award Winning host on CBS 5’s “Eye on the Bay”, interviewing community characters and celebrities as well as feeding goats and cooking with world-renowned chefs. It was in British radio news in 1987 that he got his real kick-start, as a trainee radio reporter at County Sound Radio, Guildford, near London. Liam was also the voice of BBC produced technology show “Tomorrow’s World”. Eager to
leave Britain’s harsh winters behind, Liam ventured west to America in 1994, filled with hope and a sense of adventure.

Charity DonationEach year the British American Business Council Northern California donates a portion of the proceeds from the Christmas Luncheon to a local charity. This year the BABC will be donating to Raphael House, which is dedicated to helping at-risk children and their parents achieve stable housing and financial independence, while strengthening family bonds and personal dignity. Last year we handed over $10,000 to them from your kind generosity.

The National Anthems
O, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.O say, does that star-spangled banner yet waveO’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Together the traditional house and wonderfully converted barn offer, quite simply, one of the best holiday places to stay in the region. Less than 100 meters from the central square, the views are of countryside and gardens providing complete privacy for visitors. It’s a wonderful place at any season, thoughtfully-equipped with everything from a croquet set to a perfect 12x6 meter swimming pool.
Walk to the village shop, a friendly restaurant, a crêperie and the best home-made ice cream parlour in Gascony; nearby are cycling, tennis, golf, historic sites, local markets and exceptional restaurants – even a frog sanctuary! Once you’re in the village, you don’t need to go anywhere else!
