SAVE THE DATE June 1-7 Youth Mis-sion Trip June 9-12 Annual Con-ference June 16 Fathers’ Day June 17-20 VBS June 30 Fifth Sunday

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS GROUP Count Your Blessings, aka CYB, gathered at the Riverfront restaurant in Kingsport for a delicious lunch. We started out on the outside porch, enjoying the sunshine, ducks and rushing water. Then we retreated inside when the food arrived. Everyone left with big smiles and full tum-mies! On June 13, we will be headed for the Whistle Stop Café in Unicoi. Join us at 11:30 am for the short bus ride or meet us there at noon to enjoy good food and good company. In July, we plan on going to the One Acre Café in Johnson City. It has some of the best quiche I have ever eaten. Yum!

CHURCH FAMILY NEWS

Congratulations to Andrew Huffine, recent graduate of St. Mary’s

Catholic School. On May 14, in

addition to various academic

awards, he received the DAR

Youth Citizenship Award and

the Pace Award. This award is

presented by the John Sevier-

Sarah Hawkins Chapter of the

DAR, and is given to the student

exhibiting honor, service, cour-

age, leadership, and patriotism.

The Pace Award is the highest

award St. Mary’s School gives, and is given to the graduating stu-

dent who best exemplifies the school’s mission of gospel values,

academic excellence and service to others.

According to Kim Kenneson, 8th grade sponsor, “Andrew exem-

plifies the love of Christ in that he does not seek his own. He

works quietly to build up the lives of others. He is the wind for our

sails, pushing us to see God in the face of a humble person.”

Andrew is the son of Dan and Angie Huffine, and the grandson

of John and Carolyn Tomko and Larry and Carolyn Huffine.

Congratulations, Andrew — great job!

YOUTH GROUP Greetings! School is just about out and we’ll be saying hello to summer. I know you’re ready to kick back and relax. It’s also time for our Mission Trip, June 1 – 8. We’ll be staying at a new church this year. We are at Hollywood United Methodist in Hollywood. That is South Carolina — not California! Please pray for safety on the trip down and back and while we are there. Also pray for the families we will be working with. This year Dana Walker, our cook, won’t be going. She has been a big part of the team for years. Thank you, Dana, for being so faithful. We’ll miss you. Also, we have new youth and adults going. Thank you for all your love and support of our Youth. Pictures will follow next month. Blessings, Miss Mary Ann

JOTS FROM JANE

Summer is here and so are the intense UV rays that can do so much dam-

age. UV rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes, so it’s time to get out our hats, sunscreen and sunglasses.

Dermatologists recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30,

which blocks 97% of the UVB rays, and use enough to generously coat all

skin that will not be covered by clothing. Higher number SPF’s block slightly more of the sun’s UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100%. All sun-

screen should be applied to dry skin 15 minutes before exposure, and should be reapplied approximately every two hours, or according to the la-

bel instructions, even on cloudy days and after swimming.

REMEMBER: Slip on a shirt. Slap on a hat. Slop on 30+ sunscreen. Seek shade or shelter. Slide on some sunglasses. And one last thought: drink

plenty fluids! Ecclesiastes 11:7-8 “Sunshine is sweet; it is good to see the light of day. People

ought to enjoy every day of their lives, no matter how long they live.”

Blessings,

Jane Turner Parish Nurse

Vacation Bible School – 2019

To Mars and Beyond

Bible Verse: “Glory to God, who is able to do far beyond all that we could

ask or imagine by His power at work within us!” Ephesians 3:20

VBS will be “one small step for your kids, one giant leap for God’s Kingdom!” Stories in-

clude: Daniel in the Lions’ Den, Queen Esther, The Good Samaritan and Jesus Heals 10 Lep-

ers. The youth will be presenting the stories.

The puppet, EP3-20, is super cute; his eyes and mouth light up. Note the puppet’s name is also

our Bible verse! We will have lots of great songs with actions!

Crafts include: Slime, a galaxy in a bottle, Suncatchers, doodle bots, painted rocks and lots

more.

The Mission emphasis will be boys verses girls again! Bring children’s breakfast and lunch

food for the Jonesborough food pantry. Suggested items will be on bulletin boards. This was

really fun at last year’s VBS!

Recreation is always a hit – several games are planned.

Mark your calendars for Monday, June 17- Thursday, June 20, 2019. Registration forms are

available at church; see bulletin boards or talk to Jackie, Angie or Laura.

Each night at 5:30 a light meal will be served; the program goes from 6 pm – 8 pm.

Get ready to – Go Beyond with Faith, Go Beyond with Boldness, Go Beyond with Kindness

and Go Beyond with Thankfulness!

Family Promise Update

It has been several months now since we have taken over the reins of Family Promise. We’d like to pass on to the generous congregation of JUMC some of what we’ve learned. The involvement and efficiency of the volunteers involved in this program is supe-rior to any corporate or community environment we have ever experienced. I would like to publicly thank Maggie Polden, who is the “constant” in our program. She is pre-sent every evening to host our families. She helps them with any special needs, man-ages dinners, listens and supports them. Her involvement is paramount and so appre-ciated. Do not underestimate the power of this woman. Maggie Polden is a force! Each time we meet a new Family Promise guest, we learn something from them that is deep, moving and changes us from the inside out. We see the world differently when we look through the eyes of a mom or dad who is struggling to support their chil-dren. Data from the Family Promise organization has taught us that this program is suc-cessful in reaching the goal of integrating these families back into working, getting medical benefits, parenting effectively, going back to school and supporting them-selves without any government support. We are giving these families the gift of pride. Meeting the volunteers has been a blessing. Every time we get involved in our church activities, we meet someone new and recognize their strength, their commit-ment to God and their desire to make our little corner of the world a better place. This has been such a gift to us. Our wish is that many others would get involved in the program. We have a steady group of supporters and are appreciative of their contributions of time, however, the ideal situation would be to expand our volunteer list so the regulars can have a back-up. If you are interested in giving yourself a gift of a deeper understanding and meet-ing some incredible people in our congregation, sign up for the next Family Promise week. We would love to get to know you and share the experience of making our community better, one family at a time. God Bless, Dave and Diane Roche

Diane’s Closet We are so blessed with an abundance of material things . . . and we are blessed in sharing our abundance. We gave away clothing and household goods to over 59 families! We gave shoes to a ministry for third world countries, and we gave to the Haven of Mercy thrift shop. We also touched many people with the love and joy of our Christian faith. Here’s just one story of the many who were served through this event: An older woman came in with four children in tow, from a teenage boy down to a little one about 6 years old. During a lull in activity she made the comment that she never expected to be raising her grandchildren. It seems that the children’s father took all the family possessions and abandoned the children after his wife (the woman’s daughter) got arrested for drug possession. They truly had nothing. She was so pleased to be able to help the kids choose clothing to take home. The teen boy’s face just lit up when he saw a donated, old stereo system. He walked out grinning from ear to ear with his own sound system. Thanks to all the many community and church volunteers for your time and your prayers. Thanks to the many who donated their “stuff,” for you are good stewards. You not only gave a second life to things you no longer need, but took care of the environ-ment by keeping things out of the landfill. The fall and winter clothing give-away will be September 7, the Saturday after Labor Day.

FIFTH SUNDAY HYMN SING

Please join us on Sunday, June 30, for an Old Fashion Hymn Sing during our Combined Worship Service. We will gather at 9 am for a “pot luck” breakfast and then move up to the sanctuary at 10 am for worship, where we will enjoy singing many of your favorite hymns. You can turn in your hymns ahead of time or you can just “shout them out” that Sunday morn-ing. It will be a wonderful service of music and preaching.

Mark your calendars, grab a friend and plan to attend worship

together.

BUSY HANDS WITH A PURPOSE

A group of very busy ladies have been sewing, knitting and crocheting various projects to help

our local communities plus trying to get a head start with items for the Operation Christmas

Child (shoeboxes) mission in November.

The sewing group discusses projects, cuts fabric or hand-finishes smaller projects, then sews

them at home. A special request for a colostomy bag cover was sewn and donated locally.

Last year, little dolls were sewn for the shoeboxes, and probably will be again this year, along

with little purses sewn, knitted or crocheted. Ongoing sewing projects include: walker bags,

adult covers (aka bibs), port pillows, IV pole covers and neck pillows. Little dresses in three

sizes have also been made.

Neck pillows

Little dresses

Yarn projects continue, with hats and scarves, lapghans, baby blankets, and shawls, as well as

washcloths/soap sacks, totes and purses for Operation Christmas Child.

Purses and soap sacks

We meet every month on the first and third Tuesday mornings, from 10 am to 12 noon, in the

church fellowship hall, and we always need more busy hands. Please join us to see what you

can work on at home if you can’t always attend the meetings. Everyone works on their specific

interest. It’s fine if you can join us for even one specific project. Feel free to invite a friend or

two — church membership is not necessary

Annual Conference

On June 9, Pastor Karen and family, along with Angie Huffine (your lay member to Annual Conference) and her family, will head to Lake Junaluska for Annual Conference. We will wor-ship together, celebrate together and struggle together. On the agenda will be voting for our delegates to the 2020 General Conference, Ordination Service, celebrating our Missions, hearing Committee Reports and passing the 2020 Annual Conference Budget.

Angie Huffine and Pastor Karen will share more about Annual Conference when they re-turn.

MONTHLY MISSION

ONE ACRE CAFÉ

How much do you expect to spend when you eat at a local restaurant? Will $7 feed you a nutritious meal? Not so much in these days of rising prices.

The One Acre Café in Johnson City is the mission for June. There, any adult can receive a meal for the suggested donation of $5, $7 or $9, depend-ing on the size plate that is ordered. If you visit the One Acre Café, located at 603 W. Walnut Street, you help feed someone that has volunteered to work for their meal.

One Acre Café is a non-profit café formed under the concept of One World, Everybody Eats. Produce, meats, etc. come from local sources, and from do-nations. While at One Acre Café, no one knows who is volunteering. Several groups from Jonesborough United Methodist help as volunteers — and we always need volunteers. The hours are Monday through Friday from 11 am to 2 pm.

There are three ways you can help support One Acre Café:

1) Eat lunch there. 2) Volunteer. 3) Donate at the church with money earmarked for the One Acre Café.

For further information, check out www.oneacrecafe.org to learn more about this amazing opportunity to serve.

SISTERS OF FAITH

May has showered us with a multitude of blessings. The 4th An-nual Spring Bazaar once again was a success. The Sisters made a little over $3000! Mauk’s famous Stressless Chair, generously donated by Joel and Jean Conger, was won by an anonymous bidder with a bid of $1300. The money from the chair will go toward the Pavilion. A big “shout out” to Tami Moore and Jeri Jones, who have organized and run the Bazaar and Silent Auction for the past four years. Hats off to Madelyn Rohrer for organizing the bake sale and to all the Sisters who once again made it happen. The Sisters have the plans and rough estimate in for the pavilion. We are around $5000 short of what we expect to need to finish it. It would be nice to have this done so we can start enjoying it this sum-mer and fall. Any and all donations will be appreciated. We are work-ing on getting the mulch in for the playground in time for VBS. Look-ing forward to seeing some smiling faces to help us spread the mulch.

The prayer of Jabez: “Oh that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me,

and keep me from the evil one." Chronicles 4:9-10

Blessings,

Claudia Randolph, President Sisters of Faith
