MONTHLY MEETINGS

Held at Brushgrove Community Hall. On the second Monday of each month. (except January) 7.30pm start. For enquiries or directions ring the President Doug Clark 0427 665 200 All meetings are designated Club authorised runs. You may drive your historic vehicles to and from meetings.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

August will be a busy month for members, as most weekends have some type of event listed. Those on the Bundy Tour are in final preparation, with a pre tour gathering on the 9th August. South Grafton Aerodrome, Wings & Wheels is on the 16th August, this is a popular event. For further information please contact Chris Sparks 0438 635 595. Christmas in July was a great success, with more than 60 in attendance. Tom Raven with his many helpers did a fantastic job, along with all members making a contribution, we were left with the greatest selection of food you could wish for. I recently attended Motorex in Sydney at Olympic Park. We think our vehicles are pretty special but most of the cars & bikes on display would possibly exceed $150,000 in costs spent on them. The thing that stands out is that we at least drive & use our vehicles.

Regards

Doug Clark

EDITOR’S COMMENT

Welcome to the August Grille!

A big thankyou to Michelle Thornton for contributing her recipe for red wine pickled pork. Any one with a special recipe that you would like to share with other club members please send it in to us and we will place it in a newsletter.

Another interesting article about the hazards of toxic chemicals present in newer motor vehicles. Benzine is a particularly nasty chemical. Another currently “safe” but maybe harmful chemical which we are exposed to is PBD, a close relative of PCB, with similar properties. It is used as a fire retardant on the upholstery of airplanes, in navy work uniforms and firefighter’s coats. Watch this space.

Don’t forget the buy swap sell and help advertisements for club members and outsiders. Adverts will be free for small items and run for 2 months. Ads for vehicles will attract a fee. You can email these and articles and photos of your cars to [email protected] or you can send by snail mail to 21 Bowtell Avenue, Grafton.

BRUSHY RUN A monthly run to the Brushgrove Recreational Park (called the Brushy Triangle by us), Clarence Street Brushgrove. This community park has shade, toilets open 24/7 and an electric BBQ shelter with sink. The run is for vehicles with H plates, between 8am and 5pm on the designated day each month and allows you to travel from your residence to Brushgrove where you might enjoy morning tea, read the paper, enjoy a picnic or pub lunch or a later run for afternoon tea. It’s up to you. Or you may simply do the run and return home. This doesn’t of course mean you can go via Glenn Innes! If the rules are not adhered to we will have to take the run off the calendar. Any questions please call myself or John. Members must advise prior by email to myself [email protected] or by phone 0419 888 902 or to John Snape [email protected] phone 6645 2377 that they intend to do the run. Your particulars will then be recorded.

MEMBERS’ PAGE Members’ vehicles can be displayed on the club web site. To have your pride and joy displayed send photos to: [email protected] or phone Peter Arnull 0266 434683

OPEN DAY AT THE PARMENTERS Dick and Ena will again host an open day on September 20th to enjoy a relaxed day around the gardens and shade house at Whiteman Creek. Hopefully the orchids will do the right thing and be out in flower. Maybe enjoy a bush walk after lunch. Morning tea of fresh scones and assorted home made jams will be provided. It is planned to have the club BBQ trailer on site for BYO luncheon and drinks. Plenty of room for parking. Everyone welcome.

CAR AIR CONDITIONER HAZARD

Now this is very interesting! My car's manual says to roll down the windows to let out all the hot air before turning on the A/C. WHY? No wonder more folks are dying from cancer than ever before. We wonder where this stuff comes from, but here is an example that explains a lot of the cancer-causing incidents. Many people are in their cars the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night, 7 days a week. As I read this, it makes me feel guilty and ill. Please pass this on to as many people as possible. Guess it’s not too late to make some changes.

Please do NOT turn on A/C as soon as you enter the car. Open the windows after you enter your car and then after a couple of minutes, turn ON the A/C. Here's why: According to research, the car's dashboard, seats, a/c ducts, in fact ALL of the plastic objects in your vehicle emit Benzene, a Cancer causing toxin. A BIG CARCINOGEN. Take the time to observe the smell of heated plastic in your car when you open it, and BEFORE you start it up. In addition to causing cancer, Benzene poisons your bones, causes anaemia and reduces white blood cells. Prolonged exposure can cause Leukaemia and increases the risk of some cancers. It can also cause miscarriages in pregnant women.

The "acceptable" Benzene level indoors is: 50mg per sq.ft. A car parked indoors, with windows closed, will contain 400-800 mg of Benzene - 8 times the acceptable level. If parked outdoors in the sun, at a temperature above 60 degrees F, the Benzene level goes up to 2000-4000 mg, 40 times the acceptable level. People who get into the car, keeping the windows closed, will eventually inhale excessive amounts of the BENZENE toxin. Benzene is a toxin that affects your kidneys and liver. What's worse, it is extremely difficult for your body to expel this toxic stuff.

So friends, please open the windows and doors of your car - give it some time for the interior to air out -(dispel the deadly stuff) - before you enter the vehicle

CLARENCE VALLEY LUNCH CRUISE

The lunch cruise advertised here unfortunately clashes with our organised events as we also plan outings for the third Sunday of the month. As it stands this provides an alternate activity for those who may not wish to travel on the long distance outings, but still want to exercise their old vehicle.

EDITORS NOTE REGARDS BENZINE C6H6

Benzine is one of the aromatic hydrocarbons. What is special about all aromatic hydrocarbons is that they contain the “benzene ring” which is a circular arrangement of the carbon atoms with alternate single and double bonds.

Benzine was used in aftershave prior to it being recognised as a carcinogen. I cannot vouch for the figures quoted in the article below and they seem a bit high.

RARE SHED FINDS

On a recent club outing the men and Robyn all visited a private collection which at best would be described as a rare shed find. The condition of the vehicles reinforced with me the need to keep older motor cars indoors and out of the weather. Compare the Fiat and the Mini. Most interesting was how good the older vehicles were compared to the more recent builds. Once upon a time cars were designed to last and not be replaced every 3-6 years.

Although some of these finds probably should be crushed, they can still supply bits and piec-es for an avid restorer. This begs the question, with the recycling trend and retired vehicles being crushed, where will future restorers get their old vehicles and in what condition will they be?

ANOTHER PERIOD AD FOR A DISTINGUISHED MOTOR Robyn’s Dad was going through some old newspaper clippings regards his fitting and turning marks at TAFE when he chanced upon this advertisement for a Wolseley 4/44 on the same page of the Daily Telegraph, January 18, 1955. The price was £1,086, or approximately 5 years wages. Motor vehicles really have dropped in price. It is interesting to note that even in 1955 dealers quoted prices without tax or delivery charges to make the vehicle seem more affordable than it really was. A fitting description…….”A distinguished car—lovely to look at—to own—to drive…..”

JULY COFFEE RUN TO RAPPVILLE HOTEL

On Tuesday 7 July 2015, Grafton members left Bunnings and headed up the Casino Road and picked up Lower river members at Whiporie. We then continued headed north and turned off to the once thriving town of Rapville. Like many old railway towns, Rapville has decresed in size since the deciline of the railway. An ongoing legacy to the age of steam is the Rapville Hotel, a lovely two story building which is the process of being restored. It is one of the few remaining timber Hotels surviving without having burnt down. We started with coffee, cake and biscuits at the pub then went for a run to view some local history, some members travelling on the back of a ute and others piling into Kim Dahl’s combi van (this was the highlight for our son James) and then came back to the pub for lunch.

PETER AND ROBYN NIXON’S MORRIS MINORS

I have owned Morris Minors all of my motoring life. The disease started with a 1000 panel van followed by a 1949 tourer. I then restored another 49 tourer for my brother which he has since sold to the original owner. Over my life I have owned 3 travellers, one panel van, numerous sedans, 1 utility and 2 tourers.

We are about to begin restoration of the 49 tourer again, properly, this time with a side valve motor and running gear. These parts were missing when the car was first acquired, for $15 and $20 for the trailer hire. When I first did up the tourer I used it for the weekly commute between Alstonville and Grafton, something that just wore the vehicle out. In my opinion, older cars are best on club plates and left to enjoy their senior years with short runs close to home and support.

Our current club car is a 1954 Morris Minor 4 door sedan, named “Baby”. This is on H plates and has travelled on many club runs. Robyn bought this one for me as a fiftieth birthday present, in a “fully restored” condition. We have had to do some minor repairs to the brakes, speedo, chrome, tail lights and wipers over the last 6 years, but otherwise the vehicle has been excellent. Tyres are about due, being at least 6 YO (recently confirmed to be 36 month 03) and to this end I have sourced 6 of the very hard to find 4” Morris Major Elite rims from the biggest retailer of Morris Minor parts in the world…...EBAY.

I am now driving our Wolseley 4/44 and getting the bugs out of it while it is on full rego prior to it moving to club plates. It still needs some panel repairs and an engine / gearbox refurbishment.

I hope this article and Tom’s last month, inspires other members to send in their old car story.

Regards

Peter Nixon
