The Aspen Institute: AGLN Fellow Exchange A New Social Enterprise CommunityThe Aspen Institute’s Global Leadership Network is made up innovative thinkers and doers from around the world who are selected by nonprofit think tank, The Aspen Institute to become Fellows to lead social enterprise projects that address some of the world’s biggest challenges. With a 4-year old, private website that primarily served to make Fellow contact information from the AGLN’s Raiser’s Edge CRM accessible within the Network, The Aspen Institute asked Constructive to partner on digital strategy and web design to turn their website into a hub of social enterprise engagement that would help accelerate their Fellows’ impact.

AGLN Online Directory: Before Redesign More an online white pages than online community, the existing AGLN Drupal website suffered with poor usability and limited functionality that significantly reduced its value to AGLN Fellows. Private and fully password-protected, it also limited The Aspen Institute’s ability to raise awareness of the social enterprise projects of their global network. Our mission for the nonprofit’s website redesign was to create a collaborative social enterprise community for more than 1,900 Aspen Institute Fellows from around the world, while designing new ways for the website to communicate key issues and raise awareness of the AGLN’s impact.




Interactive Strategy & Information Architecture Our digital strategy recommended opening up the closed-network website to educate and inspire a wider audience with the social enterprise projects of AGLN Fellows. To encourage exploration, content strategy organizes and connects information by geography, issues, and interests, while editorially rich Leadership Project pages provide a platform for digital storytelling. Profile pages allow Fellows to share what they’re learning by uploading videos and documents and connecting social media accounts. And to encourage collaboration within the community, the AGLN’s opportunities section contains job, investment, and other opportunities that Fellows can make available within the Network or to the broader public.

Branding, Web Design & DevelopmentGiven the significant shift in digital strategy for The Aspen Institute’s website, we recommended a rebranding—renaming the AGLN’s “Online Directory” as “The Fellow Exchange” to signal its role as a thriving social enterprise community and hub of engagement for AGLN Fellows. Technical strategy and website design were executed in tandem, with our web development team and web design team working in parallel to make sure that the feature-rich environment we envisioned for the project would live up to its potential and could be executed in time for launch.




Drupal Development & CRM IntegrationEssential to achieving the ASpen Institute’s goal to create a more connected online community for their Fellows was complex integration with the nonprofit’s Raiser’s Edge CRM. We executed technical strategy with Drupal development that facilitates two-way communication between Aspen’s CRM and website, giving Fellows the ability to directly edit profiles, and controlling the display of private and public information depending on a user’s status.

Responsive Web DesignWith The Aspen Institute’s network of social entrepreneurs being incredibly active, it was also critical that the nonprofit’s website be not only accessible, but useful for mobile users. Custom responsive web design combines bold imagery with a system of structured typography and user interface controls that make interacting with the website a pleasure on any device.
