Using simple router bits to form a complex profileAlthough crown molding appears elaborate i t can actual ly bemade with three common router bits. To make the molding,f i rst cut three boards longer and wider than you wi l l need forthe three layers of molding. Instal l a panel rais ing bi t in yourrouter table. Al ign the fence and adjust the depth of cut,

then rout the profile for the f irst board. Switch to the secondand third bi ts and boards, repeat ing the process for eachrespective profile. Next, rip each board on your table saw,so the first board is the widest and the third the narrowest.Glue and clamp the boards together to form the molding.
