participant with an overview of 24 tips to effective networking.

Understanding other’s needs before telling about your own.

Setting Expectations

You don’t need to know the most people, just know the right people.

Don’t expect anything. Don’t leave networking to chance. Go beyond your industry. Don’t dismiss anyone as irrelevant.

How to reach out to someone new

Quantify how much time you are going to take.

Start by offering praise, not requesting help.

Keep your emails short. If you must ask a favor, then ask

for permission to continue.

How to build the relationship.

Try to provide as much value as you possible can.

Start by focusing on being friendly and helpful.

Develop the habit of introducing people. Ask if people want to be connected. Nurture your current network.

Making Networking a Habit

Try to connect one person per day.

Don’t take “No,” personally. Make it a point to follow up. Did you fail? Try reaching out in a different way.

Things to remember

Network with the intention of helping others, not yourself.

Networking is more about listening to what people say than saying the right things.

Sometimes the best networking opportunities involve real work.

Email is easy to send….and ignore.
