is not just the splendid view of the 40-metre diameter glass dome or the appeal of temporary art exhibitions of international standing. What makes tens of thousands of visitors return, once again, to Rovereto

every year to visit the Mart, one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary art in Italy, is mainly its huge changing collection of 20th century art, in which only transformation is permanent. Likewise, the museums of the Trento region, enhanced every year by temporary exhibitions, offer so much that you will not get bored. These museums include Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento, with its rich permanent collection that ranges from ancient times to the 19th century. Then there is the Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina, housed in the Augustinian provostry, dating back to 1145, at San Michele all’Adige, which offers a journey through the folk traditions of Trentino. The Museo Diocesano Tridentino at Palazzo Pretorio has wide-ranging sections dedicated to paintings by local artists, wooden sculptures, vestments, Flemish tapestries, and the Council of Trent. While awaiting the grand opening in mid-2013 of the Muse, the new science museum of Trento designed by Renzo Piano, the Museo delle Scienze runs a string of science museums in the Trento region including the Museo dell’Aeronautica Gianni Caproni, the oldest aeronautical museum in the world. In Rovereto, the war museum Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra offers a rich collection with few equals, particularly concerning World War I, whereas the Museo Civico hosts an extensive section on astronomy and robotics, among other things. The Gallerie di Piedicastello, the road tunnels of Trento until a few years ago, are now large exhibition areas run by the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino mainly dedicated to historical retrospectives, whereas Torre Vanga houses small but prestigious exhibitions on Trentino art, from the medieval period to the 14th century. Finally, there is the MAG, Museo Alto Garda, housed in the 13th century bastion Rocca, which not only offers an extensive archaeological section with splendid funerary statues of the Copper Age but also a rich art gallery and a section on history.

From 25 February to 3 June, the season of the great exhibitions at the Mart in Rovereto opens with Postmodernismo. Stile e sovversione 1970-1990 (Postmodernism. Style and subversion 1970 – 1990), a new prestigious collaboration set up with the Victoria and Albert Museum of London. From the videos of Grace Jones and the Sex Pistols to design objects created by Ettore Sottsass and his Memphis collection, this exhibition explores a style that first emerged in architectural culture, and then spread from the early Seventies to a broader cultural context, influencing the cinema, fashion and important revolutions in music and youth culture. At the same time at the Mart, there is Alice in Wonderland, an exhibition co-produced with the Tate Liverpool gallery, which shows how much this work and its illustrations by Lewis Carroll have influenced contemporary artistic culture, including paintings by Surrealists, pop art artists such as Peter Blake, and protagonists of contemporary art such as Sigmar Polke and Kiki Smith. From 17 March to 8 July, the Mart also offers two major exhibitions. The first is Afro. Il periodo americano (Afro. The American period), in the centenary of the birth of this artist, is an exhibition that brings together the artist’s works during his most productive period, spent in the United States from 1949 to 1958. The paintings on show, many exhibited in Europe for the first time, are from leading American museums. The second exhibition is Gina Pane, a retrospective exhibition of works that presents the entire artistic career of a fundamental protagonist in the Body Art field, with installations, drawings, videos, photographs and objects used in her legendary “actions”.From 23 June to 9 September, Willi Baumeister will be held, the first solo exhibition in Italy dedicated to Willi Baumeister, a great master of abstract art in the Thirties, in collaboration with the Fundación Juan March in Barcelona, the Kunstmuseum in Winterthur and Willi Baumeister Stiftung GmbH.From 22 September to 13 January, another highly interesting exhibition will be held at the Mart by Lea Vergine: Fin de Race. Tra avanguardia e decadenza (Fin de Race. Avant-garde and decay), which illustrates about a 100 paintings, sculptures, design objects, books and original documents of the cultural circle that in the early 20th century centred on the charismatic figure of Virginia Woolf. The Mart in Rovereto is also the Casa d’Arte Futurista Depero, the only Futurist museum in Italy, which this year, from 31 March to 2 September will hold an exhibition on the experience of Fortunato Depero, Depero 1912. The protagonist of this small and precious exhibition is a photograph album of the Val di Fiemme illustrated by Fortunato Depero, found in 2009 in the archives of the Touring Club. Presenting a series of drawings, watercolours and photographs, the exhibition provides an opportunity for reflection, following the stages in the work of this artist from Rovereto, in the early years leading up to the great Futurist adventure.

From Rovereto to Trento and from the Mart to Castello del Buonconsiglio, the castle that not only houses the splendid frescoes of the Ciclo dei Mesi (Cycle of the Months) but also a collection of art and archaeology dating from ancient times to the mid-19th century, illustrating the historic and artistic events of the town and the local area. In addition to the archaeological section, it has an important medieval section with the silver reliquary of Saint Apollinaris dating to the 6th or 7th century, and a section displaying Renaissance bronze statues and medals. It also has some beautiful 14th- 17th century wooden statues, including small Romanesque Virgin Marys of Trentino, elegant, Bohemian and Swabian inspired Late Gothic Virgin Marys, the Annunciation by Maffeo Olivieri, as well as works by Jorg Atz and Narciso of Bolzano. Furthermore, every year Castello del Buonconsiglio hosts an important exhibition. From 23 June to 18 November 2012, I cavalieri dell’imperatore. Duello e guerra nelle armerie rinascimentali (The Emperor’s Knights. Duels and war in Renaissance armouries) will be on show, based on the most complete collection in the world of battle and parade weapons and armour from the Arsenal of Graz, hand-forged by master blacksmiths in the Renaissance period. There are two exhibition venues: Castel Beseno with a section dedicated to weapons for battle, siege and military strategies, which already has a rich collection of weapons and armour, and Castello del Buonconsiglio, which develops the theme of the tournament, portrayed in the month of February in the Ciclo dei Mesi at Torre Aquila. During the Renaissance period, a tournament actually took place at Castello del Buonconsiglio at the time of the visit by Philip of Spain, according to a historical account, which was also attended by people disguised as Turks, with celebrations in honour of the sovereign. In addition to the epic dimension of battle and the ideal of the heroic knight and courtly love, one of the themes of the exhibition, which also displays Turkish masks, is the encounter of different civilizations. Another museum, which also features a highly popular permanent collection and organises exhibitions of great interest every year is the ethnographic Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina. This year until 1 April you can visit the exhibition organised by the Centro Studi Martini, La Generazione dei Giganti which offers a vast collection of objects and iconographic materials that illustrate the life of Jesuit missionaries, the protagonists of evangelization and cultural exchanges with China. Then from 20 April to 25 November, Le scritte dei pastori della Val di Fiemme (The writings of the shepherds of the Val di Fiemme) will be held, which includes the results of important research by this museum on the graffiti of the people of the Val di Fiemme since the 17th century. This complex work required fieldwork, excavation, classifying, analysing and interpreting thousands of graffiti painted on rocky crags, at altitudes from 1,200 to 2,000 metres, using a special local pigment known as “bòl”.

The countdown has started to the opening of the Muse, the new science museum of Trentino designed by Renzo Piano: it is scheduled for June 2013. In his design project, this leading architect has included the philosophy of Trentino “glocal”: act locally, think globally. In the building, still under construction, a horizontal dimension, with its global coverage, and a vertical dimension, with its alpine connections, harmoniously exist. In addition, the highest part of the Muse will be dedicated to the mountains also using 3D and interactive technologies in immersive caves: visitors will find themselves projected into a freezing atmosphere at 3,000 metres. They will be able to experience skiing along the snow-covered slopes just like an extreme skier or hovering on rock faces in a paraglider. This hi-tech dimension will accompany a more traditional one, with a strong educational feature intended to make visitors to the museum more aware: e.g. if woods are not managed correctly, rain in the mountains may cause disasters. Pending the opening of the new Muse in 2013, the Museo delle Scienze is still busy: on 14 September a highly interesting exhibition will open at its main premises in Via Calepina entitled Homo Sapiens. La Grande storia della diversità umana (Homo Sapiens. The great history of human diversity). Starting with the birth of the genus Homo, the invention of agriculture and human migration that precedes historic periods, the exhibition follows the theme of human displacement and mobility in an unstable and fragmented ecological area. Another treasure of a museum in Trentino, under the direction of the Museo delle Scienze, is the Museo dell’Aeronautica Gianni Caproni, the oldest aeronautical museum in the world, founded in 1927 by the Caproni family. What impresses visitors, not only aeronautical enthusiasts, is the large number of aeroplanes. At least 20 are on show in a collection of 57, as well as documents, relics, works of art dedicated to flight by artists including Luigi Bonazza, Fortunato Depero, Giacomo Balla, Mario Sironi, Tato and Alfredo Ambrosi. The aeroplanes on show, each one more beautiful than the other, include the Ansaldo SVA 5, which took part in a demonstration flight over Vienna on 9 August 1918, with its camouflaged bodywork intact, the Ansaldo A1 also dating back to 1918, as well as different models of Caproni starting with the Ca 6 of 1911. Other branches of the Museo delle Scienze include the Giardino Botanico Alpino Viote di Monte Bondone, the Osservatorio Astronomico Terrazza delle Stelle, the limnological station at Lago di Tovel, the Centro Preistoria Marcesina, the Museo geologico delle Dolomiti in Predazzo and the Museo delle Palafitte del lago di Ledro. The pile-dwelling theme has been very popular since the prehistoric settlements of Ledro and Fiavé also became UNESCO World Heritage Sites. At the latter site, the Museo delle Palafitte di Fiavé will be inaugurated on 14 April.In the scientific field, the Museo Civico di Rovereto offers children the chance to learn through play with the assistance of Lego robotic kits. The Museo Civico has also created a citadel of scientific research and experimental learning at the Bosco della Città, a public area near the town centre, with outdoor and indoor areas for experimental archaeology, ethology, botany and nature activities. From science to sacred art: the Museo Diocesano Tridentino in the prestigious building of Palazzo Pretorio, the residence of the Prince Bishops of Trento in the Middle Ages situated next to the Cathedral of San Vigilio, has a rich collection that illustrates the artistic and religious history of the bishopric. Sections of special interest include paintings by local artists from the Medieval to the Neoclassic period, wooden sculptures of the Late Gothic period and carving workshops of the 15th–16th century, liturgical vestments from the Cathedral and churches of the diocese, Flemish tapestries purchased in Antwerp in 1531 by the Prince Bishop Bernardo Clesio, as well as iconographic evidence of the Council of Trent. From 16 June to 26 November, the exhibition entitled L’immagine dell’altro nell’arte sacra trentina tra XIII e XVI secolo (The image of the other in the sacred art of Trentino from the 13th – 16th century) will be held at the Museo Diocesano. The exhibition will focus on the visual stereotypes that Western Christianity employed to portray religious otherness.The Gallerie di Piedicastello run by the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino in Trento are of special interest. In 2007, the opening of two new tunnels led to the closure of the two tunnels to traffic, that crossed the district of Piedicastello. Today, after the completion of adaptation works, the two tunnels, in black and white, have become a popular exhibition area, mainly hosting historical exhibitions. The exhibition Ritorno sul Don 1941-1943: la guerra degli italiani in Unione Sovietica (Return to the Don – 1941 – 1943: the war of the Italians in the Soviet Union) will be held at the Gallerie di Piedicastello until 30 September. In collaboration with the Foundation, a “journey” will be set up in Torre Vanga about the disappeared district of the SAS in Trento with photographs from the historic fotoarchive, followed by an exhibition entitled Benvenuto Disertori. Un segno liberty (Benvenuto Disertori. A Focus on Art Nouveau) from 25 May to 16 September, organised by the Mart together with the Soprintendenza per i Beni Storico-artistici. From 24 March to 10 June, the MAG Museo Alto Garda, situated at the Rocca built in the 12th century, will host Viaggio al lago di Garda. Le vedute fotografiche dei Lotze 1860 – 1880 (Journey to Lake Garda. The photographic views of the Lotze family 1860 – 1880): a selection of 120 photographs taken by Moritz, Richard and Emil Lotze, an illustrated history of Lake Garda during the mid-late 19th century. From 23 June to 30 September, the museum at the Rocca in Riva del Garda and at Palazzo dei Panni di Arco, the other branch of the MAG, will host Umberto Maganzini e il movimento futurista (Umberto Maganzini and the Futurist movement), an exhibition arising after the rediscovery of over 1,000 unpublished drawings by the artist, who was born in Riva del Garda in 1894.

the town walls. Not far away, grape harvesting is in full swing, grapes are being pressed and a gentleman is tasting grape juice. At Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento, the Ciclo dei mesi in the Torre Aquila, is a series of frescoes that is not only one of the great masterpieces of medieval art but also a 3D-time machine that leads to the colourful heart of court and country life at the end of the 14th century, depicting work in the fields, tournaments and declarations of love. In short, it is a worthy passport to the 300 plus castles in Trentino, the key to a historic and cultural heritage but also a starting point for discovering the nature and villages of Trentino. For example, privately owned Castel Toblino, whose harmonious Renaissance architecture is reflected, from a small peninsula, in the lake of the same name, which has been adored by generations of romantic visitors on their way to Lake Garda, 30 kilometres to the south. Along the path leading to the lake stands Castel Drena, a medieval fortress with a crenellated tower almost 30 metres high, which overlooks the Marocche area with its large rocks. Then there is Castello di Arco, above the Valle del Sarca, with its 14th century frescoed hall, depicting ladies playing chess. The Trentino region has so many castles that they suit all tastes. The impressive fortification of Castel Beseno, which guarded the Vallagarina between Rovereto and Trento, is irresistible for those who are looking for castles with the charm of the ancient art of war, still imbued with a heroic dimension. Castel Thun fascinates visitors who want to know what is inside its mighty walls: inhabited until 1992 by the Thun family, one of the oldest noble families of Trentino, it still houses original and precious art collections.Trentino has over 300 castles, fortresses and fortified sites. The autonomous Province of Trento intends to fully highlight this extraordinary heritage, as a driving force to promote the local area. Five themed areas have been identified, whose castles share a similar historical context. Inside each area, these fortifications can become the stages of a tour to follow on one or more days. This important historic-cultural project includes an original and attractive proposal for everyone, since tours can be combined with many other local attractions: trekking, thermal spas, concerts, discovering parts of Trentino, which are lesser known but no less fascinating.

In the Vallagarina the chosen theme is La suggestione del Medioevo, tra amor cortese, battaglie ed eresie (The appeal of the Middle Ages: courtly love, battles and heresies). Castel Beseno is at the heart of the area. It is the largest fortified complex in Trentino, a mighty fortress of Medieval origin with Renaissance architecture. The atmosphere at Castel Beseno is similar to that of Il mestiere delle armi (The Profession of Arms), a film directed by Ermanno Olmi, featuring helmets, breastplates and memories of epic battles. In the 14th century Palazzo di Marcabruno, a permanent exhibition is on show, with reconstructions, video footage and models of the battle of Calliano of 1487, which saw the first success of the fearsome Landsknecht mercenaries in a battle on Italian soil. This exhibition of original weapons and faithful copies focuses on... “Please touch”: everyone is invited to try on and handle helmets and armour, to the delight of children (and fathers). Another stop in the Vallagarina is Castello di Rovereto, which hosts the prestigious war museum Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra. Built in the 14th century by the Castelbarco, feudal lords of the Vallagarina, it was later altered by the Venetians who occupied it in 1416. Still on the theme of courtly love and medieval battles, there are the 14th century frescoes of Castello di Avio, also known as Sabbionara after the hamlet below the castle. It was built in the 11th century and surrounded by crenellated walls built between the 13th - 14th century. The Camera dell’amore (Room of love), features a highly appealing allegory, portraying a man stabbed in the heart by a spear, a lady with a small dog, a symbol of loyalty, and blindfolded Love carrying a bow and arrows. On the walls of the Casa delle guardie (Guard House), the theme is war, with scenes from a battle, in which the Castelbarco noble family are depicted as the winners.

In the Trento area, the castle theme focuses on the Prince-Bishopric, particularly on Castello del Buonconsiglio, a monument of extraordinary historic-artistic value not only for its Ciclo dei Mesi frescoes in the Torre Aquila, residence of the Prince Bishops of Trento up to 1803. The oldest part of the castle is Castelvecchio, which dates back to the early 13th century, with its crenellated Augusto tower and its façade with an elegant 15th century Venetian loggia. The Sala dei Vescovi is on the same floor as the loggia, with frescoes that portray all the Prince Bishops since the year one thousand. The Magno Palazzo, instead, was built in the 16th century, just like the boundary wall in the direction of the town. The frescoes in the Sala Grande, depicting caryatids and putti, are the work of Dosso and Battista Dossi, whereas the frescoes of the Loggia del Cortile dei Leoni, illustrating mythological and biblical scenes, are by Gerolamo Romanino. The Giunta Albertiana was built in the late 17th century. This building connects Castelvecchio to the Magno Palazzo, echoing the style of the latter. Every year, Castello del Buonconsiglio is the scene of a major exhibition. From 23 June to 18 November 2012, the exhibition will be entitled I cavalieri dell’Imperatore. Duello e guerra nelle armerie rinascimentali (The Emperor’s knights. Duels and war in the Renaissance armouries), and divided into two sections. One section will be about duels, inspired by the tournament scene in the Ciclo dei Mesi fresco at Castello del Buonconsiglio, whereas the other will be housed in Castel Beseno and will focus on battle weapons. In the area that includes the Val di Non and the Val di Sole, the theme chosen to characterise the castles is La nobiltà rurale nei castelli delle Alpi (The rural nobility in the castles of the Alps). The leading venue is Castel Thun, the residence of perhaps the oldest noble family in Trentino, documented as early as 1050, which saw four Prince Bishops from 17th - 18th century. The castle, just like the family, gets its name from Ton, the village in the lower Valle di Non. What makes a tour of the mansion, surrounded by a large garden and defended by towers, ramparts and moats, so fascinating is the fact that the Thun family lived there until 1992. Consequently, the castle still has its original furnishings, a rich art gallery, a copious library with thousands of books, and valuable art collections. The Stanza del Vescovo (Bishop’s Room), where Prince Bishop Sigismondo Alfonso slept, has a wooden ceiling with his coat of arms in the middle, a four-poster bed adorned with red damask, and furnishings that include wood panelling and a precious inlaid door. But the portraits of the Prince Bishops, the silverware, china, glasses, carriages, and even the finely furnished kitchen, all contribute to creating the atmosphere of the prosperous life of the rural gentry.

The theme of the area that includes the Valle del Sarca, the area of the lakes and the Giudicarie is La vita castellana nelle corti rinascimentali (Castle life in Renaissance courts). After passing Castel Toblino, which has medieval origins but was rebuilt in Renaissance style by Prince Bishop Bernardo Clesio in the 16th century, going along the Valle dei Laghi you arrive at an almost desert area, with an enormous stretch of grey limestone rocks, often gigantic, the result of landslides from Monte Brento and Monte Casale. These are the so-called Marocche, a natural spectacle dominated by Castel Drena, the medieval fort that dates back to the 12th century, probably built on the site of a prehistoric settlement. It is a predominantly Romanesque building, with a quadrangular plan, a high central keep and a tower, almost 30 metres high. A few kilometres further south you can visit Castello di Arco. You can arrive along one of the three roads that cross the olive groves as far as Prato della Lizza, where the Torre Grande stands, three 20-metre walls that survived Napoleonic cannon fire. Not far away there is the precious Sala degli Affreschi (Hall of Frescoes), built between the late 14th century and early 15th century, which fully presents the theme of castle life: in the most wonderful illustrations some ladies are playing dice, others are playing chess, another is picking roses and a knight is being invested. A few kilometres to the south you arrive in Riva del Garda with its ancient Rocca, a fortress on the lake built from 1124 onwards, although its current quadrilateral shape surrounded by water is the work of the Scaligeri dating to the 14th century. Alterations were made later, first by the Venetians and then by the 16th century Prince Bishop of Trento Bernardo Clesio. Today, the Rocca in Riva del Garda houses the MAG, Museo Alto Garda and an art gallery, with works by Pietro Ricchi, Francesco Hayez and Vincenzo Vela among others, as well as an archaeological section that includes well-known stele statues from the Copper Age, Roman artefacts, and a section dedicated to the history of the Basso Sarca valley.

In the Giudicarie region, near the Adamello Brenta Nature Park between Riva del Garda and Madonna di Campiglio, stands Castello di Stenico, which is featured in the most well-known image, depicting ladies and gentlemen having a snowball fight, in the Ciclo dei mesi in Torre Aquila at Castello del Buonconsiglio. Documented since 1163, for almost eight centuries the castle was the residence of a Captain who exercised power over the Giudicarie region in the name of the Prince Bishop of Trento. Here too, the castle life theme has been developed, with hunting weapons, a kitchen with copper utensils, and a collection of keys inspired by the curious character that, in the snowball scene of the Ciclo dei Mesi, is opening the door of Castel Stenico. The last area of Trentino castles is the Valsugana and the Valle di Cembra, associated with the theme La via dei castelli. Gli antichi percorsi dall’età romana alla modernità (The castle road. Ancient routes from the Roman period to modern times). This theme refers to the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta that connected Altino with Augusta Vindelicorum, currently known as Augsburg, in Bavaria. Castello di Pergine, which overlooks the Via Claudia Augusta in the upper Valsugana, was built in the 13th century. The first owners of the castle were the Dukes of Austria, and then Emperor Maximilian I. Only in 1531 did it pass into the hands of the Prince Bishops of Trento. Today, the privately owned castle hosts a restaurant and a hotel, with 21 rooms in the wing that dates back to the Renaissance period. After a candlelit dinner in the medieval hall, you can spend the night as a member of the castle, experiencing another time period. You can then continue your journey to Fornace to visit medieval Castel Roccabruna, which was rebuilt in the Renaissance period, and looks like a beautiful stately home. Or you can go along the Valsugana, passing Borgo, as far as Castel Ivano, also privately owned, with its moat that protects the northern part of the castle, a large door with the coat of arms of the Wolkenstein family, and a 17th century chapel. The first historic account of the castle dates back to 1187, but in 1027 it had already been assigned to the Bishop of Feltre.

intact ancient Roman road, paved with large stones of red limestone from nearby quarries, along which you can see the ruts of carts that have crossed it, perhaps

loaded with supplies and headed towards the legions of Emperor Augustus. Going down into the Underground Archaeological Site SASS Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas in the historic centre of Trento, under the Teatro Sociale and Piazza Cesare Battisti, is like travelling back in time by 2,000 years. Here the ancient Tridentum is housed, founded by the Romans in the middle of the 1st century BC to guard the Valle dell’Adige. Along the road you can see the remains of a glassmaker’s workshop, mosaic floors, houses with kitchens, a latrine, triclinium, courtyard and well. A little further on, the remains of the ancient boundary stone wall, cobblestones, bricks and a tower, which in Imperial times was also the door that led to the amphitheatre. The ancient Tridentum is just one of the best archaeological features of the Trentino region, which from 14 April will enhance the new Museo delle Palafitte in Fiavé, with an extraordinary collection of objects dating back 3,500 years or so. The bottom of ancient Lake Carera, now a peat bog, has excellently preserved pottery, bronze, amber and gold artefacts, and particularly the oldest wooden objects in Europe, including kitchen utensils and work tools. The Museo Retico in Sanzeno offers a fascinating tour through the “well of time”. Starting at the lower end with Palaeolithic hunters, it then climbs to meet Neolithic farmers, Copper Age metal workers, and the death of the holy martyrs of Anaunia. The Acqua Fredda archaeological site at Passo del Redebus is one of the major protohistoric metal working sites in Europe. Then, the archaeological section of the MAG, Museo Alto Garda, in Riva del Garda houses eight fascinating stele statues of Arco dating back to the Copper Age, an artistic masterpiece of the third millennium BC.

In the SASS, Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del SAS, which gets its name from the ancient district that was largely destroyed in the Thirties to build Piazza Cesare Battisti, many features lead you to discover life in Roman times. For example, the hypocaustum heating system, based on the circulation of hot air from a nearby fireplace running under floors and inside walls. This system was used in mountain areas not only in thermal spas but also in homes. Children and adult visitors much appreciate the video entitled Dentro Trento (Inside Trento), which was made using virtual reality techniques. From the remains still visible today, a 3D-journey starts of the Roman town, with a virtual tour along the streets inside the boundary walls, with towers, to artisan workshops and the rooms of the domus with mosaics. But the ancient Tridentum is not only evident at the large SASS site. Under the Torre Civica in Piazza Duomo, you can visit the remains of the Porta Veronensis, the monumental southern entrance gate to the town, built in the middle of the1st century AD on the site of an earlier building. The gate had two arched openings surrounded by two towers with 16 sides. Today, there are still clearly visible elements including the base of the western gate with its grooves, or “cataratte”, that housed the sliding shutter gate, a tower flanking it, the remains of the boundary wall, and a stretch of the “cardo massimo”, the main north-south road. In Piazza Duomo there are also the remains of an early Christian basilica, commissioned by Bishop Vigilio to house the remains of three missionaries Sisinio, Martirio and Alessandro, who were killed in the Val di Non in 397 AD. Not far away is the archaeological site of Palazzo Lodron, with a clearly visible part of the ancient area of Tridentum, with stretches of boundary wall and a secondary road. There is also a wine-making workshop with evidence of six vats, a clear sign of wine-making activities in Trentino in Roman times. From antiquity to prehistory: on 14 April, the new Museo delle Palafitte will open in Fiavé. Together with Ledro, it is one of the 111 places that form the site dedicated to prehistoric pile-dwellings in the Alps, which recently became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Evidence can be found in Fiavé of the presence of man from the Mesolithic period, the 7th millennium BC to the Iron Age. The oldest stable settlement dates back to the 4th millennium BC, but the most important are Bronze Age pile dwellings (2nd millenium BC). In addition to hundreds of poles still visible today in the archaeological area, thousands of artefacts have been found including ceramic pottery, animal bones and horns and precious ornaments in bronze, gold and amber. Finally, a very important collection of about 300 well-preserved wooden objects, the only ones in Europe, includes kitchen tableware and utensils such as cups, ladles and trays, as well as work tools such as buckets, hammers, sickles, drills and axe handles. The new Museo delle Palafitte, housed in the ancient Casa Carli in Fiavé, also has an entire floor dedicated to the reconstruction of everyday life about 3,400 years ago in a pile-dwelling. The other pile-dwelling settlement, which became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Fiavé, is the one in Lake Ledro. In 1929, the level of the lake was lowered and over 10,000 poles surfaced on the southern shore,

the remains of a Bronze Age pile-dwelling settlement, dating back to 2200 - 1350 BC. The Museo delle Palafitte del lago di Ledro, a branch of the Museo delle Scienze, exhibits fine artefacts including a biconical urn dating back to the 14th century BC, testimony of technical expertise and artistic refinement, and a composite bronze dagger of the Bronze Age, between 2200 and 1600 BC. Made in the artisan workshop of Ledro, it has a blade decorated with refined geometric incisions. Near the museum, three pile-dwellings have been reconstructed using building methods based on studies carried out here and in Fiavé. The museum features a lively interpretation of life in prehistoric times.The discovery of the prehistoric world continues at the Museo Retico in Sanzeno, the centre for the archaeology and ancient history of the Val di Non. A fascinating exhibition which develops in the well of time, a kind of spiral tour that starts with the ancient hunters of the Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic period, who roamed ice-free territories and killed large prey including chamois, deer and mountain goats. Their chipped flint tools have been found in the local area, sometimes inserted in wooden rods used as spears. The next section is the Neolithic period, with the first farmers and animal breeders and the first ceramic vessels, followed by the Copper Age with the advent of metalworking, and then the Bronze Age with the opening of new avenues of trade and the emergence of a more complex society.

The tour continues upwards, going ahead in time, to a very important section of the museum on the Rhaetians, a population that developed between the mid-6th and the 1st century BC in Trentino Alto Adige, Lower Engadin and north-eastern Tyrol. Rhaetian culture is the village of Sanzeno, also known as “Fritzens Sanzeno”, after the names of the Austrian village in the Inn valley and of Sanzeno in the Val di Non, which houses the museum, where excavations have unearthed a large number of artefacts that testify the presence of the Rhaetians, especially on the Terrazzo dei Casalini. They include large keys, advanced tools for agriculture such as iron hoes and sickles, bronze artefacts, weapons such as helmets, swords and spearheads, as well as refined objects connected with worship. The museum also illustrates the process of Romanization, starting from the 1st century BC, and concluding with the martyrdom of the missionaries Sisinio, Martirio and Alessandro, sent to the Val di Non in 397 by bishop Vigilio of Trento and burned to death after a violent pagan reaction. Another place offering the valuable prehistoric archaeological heritage of Trentino is the Acqua Fredda site at Passo del Redebus, at 1440 metres, between the Piné plateau and the Valle dei Mocheni, where a group of nine furnaces has been found dating back to the Late Bronze Age, between the 13th and 11th century BC. It also includes tools for working copper such as mills, to grind it to sand, and the remains of bellows to keep the temperature of the furnaces at about 1200 degrees. Acqua Fredda, one of the most important protohistoric metal working sites in Europe, is the ideal place to discover the secrets of metal working. You can watch archaeological technicians making a metal tool or venture into an educational workshop.

In the MAG, Museo Alto Garda, in Riva del Garda, a copious collection of artefacts is on show from the Upper Garda area, housed in the rooms of the 12th century Rocca. It starts with flint objects of the mid-Palaeolithic period belonging to Neanderthal Man, found near Monte Baldo, followed by artefacts from the pile-dwelling settlements in Ledro and Fiavé, and a wide selection of funerary relics from the Roman period, as well as the spa complex recently discovered in Riva, in Via Pilati. But the most extraordinary artefacts on show at the museum are probably the Copper Age stele statues of Arco, eight masterpieces of prehistoric anthropomorphic sculpture, seven in marble and one in local stone. The largest is 215cm high. The stele statues represent male, female and asexual figures, with ornaments, garments, anatomical details and triangular daggers characteristic of the mid-Copper Age. Various hypotheses have been put forward about the identity of these figures. They might be gods or real people who flaunted the power of weapons. But the most likely hypothesis is that they are mythical ancestors who justified the acquisition of power by a particular social class. The Museo Civico di Rovereto also houses an impressive archaeological section, with the Paolo Orsi collections that include terracotta pottery of Magna Grecia and over 1,000 Greek silver, bronze and gold coins. The museum also offers many prehistoric artefacts, from the Neolithic period to the threshold of Romanization, as well as a fascinating tour along the dinosaur tracks to the Lavini di Marco site. South of Rovereto, on a steep 200-metre slope of Monte Zugna, the tracks of hundreds of carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs of various shapes and sizes can be seen. The rocks date back to the early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago.

You can visit this unique site in Europe on your own, consulting the information boards provided, or on an organised tour starting from the museum for groups of minimum 10 people. The Museo Civico in Rovereto organises the Rassegna Internazionale del Cinema Archeologico (International Festival of Archaeological Cinema), which will take place this year from 1 - 6 October, with dozens of films, meetings and conversations with a large number of archaeologists from all over the world. Finally, the archaeological section of the collection at the Museo Castello del Buonconsiglio is of special interest, particularlythe section on the Bronze Age and Iron Age, including a splendid amber necklace discovered in a peat bog near Cles, as well as greaves used to protect the warriors’ legs of Masetti di Pergine. Finally, there is the Roman section with the Tabula Clesiana, a bronze slab bearing the edict of Emperor Claudius, dating back to 46AD, granting Roman citizenship to the Anauni, the population of the Val di Non.

he shadows of the sentries slide along the walls in the maze-like fort, their breathing, voices and coughing echoing from their posts. A sudden burst of machinegun fire makes you hold

your breath. The image of a World War I soldier slowly appears on a screen, while a voice reads extracts from his letters and diaries. Forte Belvedere in Lavarone, a military garrison in the Great War, is in excellent condition and situated on a rocky spur that overlooks the Val d’Astico. An interactive multimedia project entitled La Fortezza delle Emozioni (The Fortress of Emotions), organised by Studio Azzurro, allows you to relive the atmosphere breathed here by soldiers, their endless waiting for battle, their fear and hope. The project not only helps you to understand that war but also to experience it, emphasizing the final choice of peace and life. The Trentino region, which was the borderland between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy, is preparing for the Centenary of the Great War ’14 – ‘18 by presenting a varied panorama rich in forts, trenches and museums. Many of these give visitors a realistic idea of how battles were fought, including the recently restored big trench Trincerone, on Monte Zugna, where Italian soldiers successfully stopped the ”Great Spring Offensive” begun by the Austrians on 15 May 1916. Double excitement can be experienced: taking the path to the trench, you retrace the route that was the last for many soldiers. When you get to the Italian outpost, you realise that the Austrian outpost is just 40 metres away. The relics of the “Guerra Bianca” (White War), fought at the most impossible altitudes, are also extremely fascinating. It involved the tunnel Galleria del Corno di Cavento, 3,380 metres up the Massiccio dell’Adamello, contested by the opposing armies at temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero. From the ice, which completely covered the cave, newspapers, leaflets, garments, weapons and ammunition have been recovered, as if the cave had been inhabited up to yesterday.

To visitors, Forte Belvedere appears to be a mighty concrete war machine that sinks underground and overlooks an incredible precipice, which was bombed but never conquered. The first stop on the multimedia tour of the fort entitled La Fortezza delle Emozioni, is at the Plastico Animato. With a gesture of the hand, visitors can animate a 3D model that presents a range of dynamic information, images and animated signs with an audio commentary, leading them to discover the history and the various features of the fort. Visitors then continue to a second stop Le sentinelle, a reconstruction of events in daily life via projected silhouettes of life-size soldiers engaged in different activities, which are activated by visitors. The third stop is Obici dei suoni, with howitzers in a dome transformed into sounds including voices, commands, noises and explosions.I diari dei nidi delle mitragliatrici excites visitors with its contrast between the dry sound of weapons that emit simulated flashes of gunfire as they listen to passages from the diaries and letters of soldiers, whose images gradually appear on the walls. Finally, from two dismantled machinegun posts, the L’Angelo degli alpini allows you to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Val d’Astico, accompanied by two female voices that take turns to recite passages by two important writers of the war period, Mario Rigoni Stern and Piero Jahier. However, the forts of Trentino involved in the Great War do not only include Forte Belvedere and six other forts in the Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna chain but also many others throughout the region, which, following recent restoration, are open to visitors.These forts include Forte Larino and Forte Corno, the former built between 1860 and 1862, the latter between 1882 and 1890,

near Lardaro in the Giudicarie Inferiori area, to defend the road from Brescia. This fine fort is made of chiselled granite ashlar. Nearby, the important Austro-Hungarian military cemetery in Bondo, commissioned by the Austrian commander Theodor Spiegel and built from 1916 onwards, hosts 697 corpses of soldiers (5 unknown) and is a highly interesting architectural structure. Dating back to the same period is Forte Bus de Vela, in a strategic position straddling the road that descends from Cadine to Trento, in pink limestone ashlar with three casemates for artillery and two tunnels for riflemen. Then there is Forte Strino, its name coming from the stream that flanks it at an altitude of 1,400 metres near Vermiglio in the Val di Sole, which resembles the shell of a kind of antediluvian fossil and defended the Tonale road. Forte Pozzacchio in Vallarsa, located on a rocky promontory at an altitude of 882 metres near Valmorbia and overlooking the Leno stream, was where the second lieutenant of the 158th Infantry Brigade of Liguria and future Nobel Prize winner Eugenio Montale fought. Some years later the poet described the soldiers’ “oblivion of the world”: “Shots were silent; the solitary bowels of the land offered no sound but the gurgling Leno. A flare shot up into the air, leaving a trail of tears. The lucid nights all through were dawn and brought foxes to my cavern. Valmorbia, a name, and in wan remembrance, a land unknown to dusk”. From Forte di Nago near Torbole, on the northern shore of Lake Garda, you can descend to Doss Casina, on Monte Baldo, the scene of another historic encounter between the war and the world of art and literature: here the Futurists, enrolled in the Lombard Battalion volunteer cyclists, also took part in occupying the hillock on 24 October 1915. A must for visitors following the footsteps of World War I in Trentino, is the Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra di Rovereto, which hosts one of the most important exhibitions ever held on the war. This visit is not only attractive due to the wealth of exhibits on show but also because of its setting, the 15th century castle of Rovereto, which houses the museum. Its rooms contain weapons, uniforms, photographs, propaganda, paintings, documents and relics. Moreover, the Fighters’ Room provides documentary evidence of the corps that took part in the war, including infantrymen, alpine soldiers, volunteer drivers and cyclists, Carabinieri, assault soldiers, Bersaglieri cyclists, as well as many objects from daily life in the trenches. In the air-raid shelter at the foot of the castle, built during World War II, there is a section on artillery of the Great War, exhibiting dozens of Italian, Austro-Hungarian, German and English relics, including bombards, mortars, howitzers and cannons. The Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra in Rovereto coordinates the Rete Trentino Grande Guerra, a network of war museums (www.trentinograndeguerra.it). It was established to promote the heritage of the Great War in Trentino, as well as a mosaic of 19 museums dedicated to this war, located in every corner of the region, which are often small but have a wealth of relics and exhibits. 1911-1931 (Libya. An Italian Colonial War 1911-1931) continues until 3 June. It helps us to remember an inconvenient and too often ignored page in Italian history. From 30 June to November 2013, an exhibition will be dedicated to a decisive stage in the Italo-Austrian conflict: Pasubio 1915-18. La lunga battaglia (Pasubio 1915-18. The Long Battle). From 1 December, the exhibition Castelli, armi e soldati 1500-1700. Il Castello di Rovereto e le collezioni del Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra (Castles, Weapons and Soldiers 1500-1700. Rovereto Castle and the Collections of the Italian War History Museum) will take place. This exhibition also marks the opening of the large towers and the terreplein to visitors after restoration. Not far from Rovereto, on Monte Zugna, the big trench Trincerone has recently been restored. It is one of the symbols of Italian resistance to the Austrian counteroffensive of the year 1916. This was one of the places where the dramatic conflict unfolded that can still be seen today: the two vanguard posts are just 40 metres apart. Trento can be seen from the Trincerone, whereas a corner of Lake Garda and a stretch of the Po plain can be seen from the Austrian trench. Today, the new itinerary for visitors, a circular route about 1.5km long covering a difference in altitude of 90 metres, is well marked with information panels and boards. Other trenches can be found on Monte Creino and on Nagià Grom, between Riva del Garda and Rovereto, where you can visit the observatory, the artillery posts in a cavern, and walk through the trenches.

Trentino also has many extraordinary sites at higher altitudes over 3,000 metres, which recall the so-called “White War”, on the Adamello range in particular. Just a few years ago, an Austro-Hungarian garrison was discovered below Punta Linke, at an altitude of 3.632 metres, including helmets, overshoes stuffed with straw, stoves and barbed wire, all transported by the cable car that ascended from Cogolo to the “barache brusade” at 3,300 metres. An exceptional site of the “White War” on the Adamello range is the tunnel Galleria di Cavento. It is situated at an altitude of 3,380 metres between the peaks of the Corno di Cavento, a crest that was long contested between the Italian and the Austrian armies. It is a cavern that is partly natural and partly excavated by soldiers trying to shelter from temperatures as low as 30 degrees below zero. After restoration work was completed in summer 2011, it is now open to visitors, who are familiar with high mountain routes and accompanied by a mountain guide. At Passo Paradiso, echoes of I Suoni e le voci della Guerra Bianca return: inside a tunnel excavated through granite, historic artefacts and a sound installation take visitors back in time to when these walls acted as a refuge for soldiers. From mid-May to January 2013, at Palù del Fersina in the Istituto Culturale Mocheno in the Valle dei Mòcheni, an exhibition is scheduled entitled Musil en Bersntol. La grande esperienza della guerra in Valle dei Mòcheni (Musil en Bersntol. The War Experience in the Valle dei Mòcheni). It is about World War I in the valley through the eyes of an excellent witness, the great Austrian writer Robert Musil. A very interesting exhibition is scheduled from 31 March to 4 November at the Centro Documentazione di Luserna. It focuses on the story of 60,000 soldiers of Trentino enrolled with the Austro-Hungarian army and sent to fight on the Russian front in the summer of 1914. Of these soldiers, around 11,000 died in Galicia, between Ukraine and Poland. In addition to the 60,000 soldiers there were over 100,000 refugees, people of Trentino who were forced to leave their homes due to the fighting. If you consider that the total population of Trentino at the beginning of the war was 380,000, you can get an idea of the magnitude of this disaster. Every evening from the Colle di Miravalle which overlooks Rovereto and the Vallagarina, the large Campana dei Caduti Maria Dolens (Maria Dolens Bell of the Fallen) tolls one hundred times in remembrance of all the people killed in the war. Forged from the bronze cannons offered by the countries that took part in the Great War, it was commissioned by the priest of Rovereto

Don Antonio Rossaro as an eternal symbol of condemnation of the war. The projects of the Fondazione Opera Campana dei Caduti include the Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso, a research centre that not only explores the social and political changes of the hotspot of south-east Europe, Turkey and the Caucasus but also produces films and documentaries. It was in Trentino that the Great War saw fighting by armies of 12 different nationalities, including the Italians, Austrians, Germans, Poles, Hungarians, Croats, Serbs, Bosnians, Slovenians, Czechs, English and French. The Centenary 2014 – 2018 is therefore an occasion for remembrance not only for Italy but also for Europe. Trentino will be ready for this centenary with a comprehensive, varied and well-organised programme of events.

This is the 2012 edition of Oriente Occidente, one of the leading European festivals of contemporary dance, which has been held in Rovereto for thirty-two years. In the Trentino region in summer, the semitones of great jazz resound in venues rich in history and charm, enhancing fascinating places such as the ancient Rocca di Riva that overlooks Lake Garda, the Sanctuary of Saint Romedio in the Val di Non and the Calceranica Mineral Park, among others. The festival I Suoni delle Dolomiti (Sounds of the Dolomites) has a similar effect. It encourages great musicians to perform in some of the most beautiful mountains in the world, which, seen through the eye of cameras, are the focal point of the TrentoFilmFestival that will celebrate its 60th edition. The screening of hundreds of short films, documentaries and feature films, and the presence of well-known mountaineers attract many enthusiasts from all over the world every year. Trento also hosts the Festival Economia attended by thousands of people, who pose questions to distinguished speakers, often impressed by such passion for the debates. Art takes centre stage with Drodesera, which celebrates the encounter between theatre performances and visual arts in the hydroelectric plant in Fies, whereas Pergine Spettacolo Aperto is a workshop of various art forms, from avant-garde drama to urban design, with diversity as its common theme. The Accademia Internazionale di improvvisazione all’organo e al clavicordo di Smarano shows that creativity in classical music plays just as an important role as in more contemporary styles. Moreover, MusicaRivaFestival offers a combination of great music and the peaceful charm of the Upper Garda area. Every year, Arte Sella adds new artistic installations of nature to its rich collection, whereas Futuro Presente explores interaction between various forms of expression of the arts and contemporary culture.

In 2012, Trentino Jazz opens with Dolomiti Ski Jazz, twenty-six concerts from 10 to 18 March throughout the Val di Fiemme. Daytime performances in mountain refuges on ski runs add irresistible appeal to this festival. After skiing down some of the most beautiful mountains in the world, you can enter a mountain refuge to listen to quality live jazz while sipping a glass of Marzemino or Teroldego red wine and tasting a speciality of Trentino: What more can you ask? At high altitudes, scheduled performances include the Barato Total group led by Barbara Casini, a great interpreter of Brazilian music, and James Thompson, the African-American saxophonist who has been working with Zucchero for years. In the evening, down in the valley, you can attend a jam session with Joe Chambers, Jorge Rossy, Pietro Tonolo and Arnie Somogyi, and a performance by the Anglo-Nigerian blues, soul and funky singer Ola Onabule. The programme continues from 11 March to 18 April with Itinerari Jazz, a series of concerts at the teatro Auditorium Santa Chiara di Trento, whereas on 28 June in the Upper Garda region the rich summer season starts: until 15 July, the Garda Jazz festival will take place at castles and at the lakeside, with music by top international groups and soloists. The Lagarina Jazz festival, another opportunity to listen to great music in exceptional venues, will be held from 1 to 31 August. Then from 29 October to 13 November, a session of Itinerari Jazz will take place at Auditorium Melotti in Rovereto. The grand finale starts from 25 October to 13 December, with Sonata Islands, a festival that starts in Trento and continues in Udine and Milan.From jazz to dance with Oriente Occidente, the contemporary dance festival from 1 to 9 September in Rovereto and Trento. This festival of experimentation and trends sees the East and the West as poles of an ideal path of exchanges and encounters not only between cultures but also between contemporary genres and forms of expression. The theme of this edition is the interaction of different cultures intertwined with body language, with all-round focus particularly on the emerging regions of the world: South America, India and China. Distant languages and people find new means of expression and interaction. The spirit of the festival, the 32nd edition this year, has been to highlight the reciprocal influences of eastern artistic tradition on western experimentation of the 20th century and vice versa. Oriente Occidente thus becomes a round trip of theatre and dance, experimentation and tradition, identity and innovation. The programme also includes a section for local young talent, aimed at providing creative and productive opportunities for young choreographers and dancers from the Trentino region. An international panel of judges, who certainly do not have an easy task, select the winners of the other awards. The most coveted prize is the “Gran Premio Città di Trento”, which goes to the best film overall. Then there is the “Premio del Club Alpino Italiano” for the best film on mountains and mountain climbing, the “Premio della Città di Bolzano” for the best film on mountain sport, exploration or adventure, as well as the “Premio della Giuria”. Thousands of enthusiasts are also attracted to Trento by debates and conferences with leading Italian and foreign mountaineers, who have conquered the most inaccessible peaks in the Alps, Himalayas, Andes and Karakorum. Religion Today Filmfestival, scheduled from 12 to 24 October in Trento and in various locations in the province, will show dozens of feature films, documentaries and short films that explore points of view of different religions on human existence and religious experience. The festival, which also includes venues in other Italian towns and abroad, allows visitors to learn about directors who remain out of the limelight due to marketing or distribution censorship. The event includes a workshop that brings together film makers and experts of different faiths and nationalities with a view to highlighting their differences.From 31 May to 3 June, in squares and in palace halls in Trento, the 7th edition of the Festival Economia will take place. It is a highly successful event due to the presence of international experts and its open participation format. The real protagonist of the festival is what has been dubbed the “Squirrel audience” (after the symbol of the festival), namely, the varied audience that crowds into the debates, posing unexpected questions to speakers including, at former editions, Zygmunt Bauman, Mario Monti, Romano Prodi and Innocenzo Cipolletta. “It is a wonderful experience to see grandmothers and parents with children sitting in the square and following debates on large screens on topics such as the Eurozone crisis or immigration,” comments Dani Rodrik. “When I say that I took part in a festival on economics with an audience of over 50,000 people, people laugh at me,” adds Alan Krueger. The theme of the 2012 edition is extremely topical: Cicli di vita e rapporti tra generazioni (Lifecycles and relationships between generations). It is a crucial topic at a time when Italy is faced with reforms on work and welfare. The protagonists of this edition include 2010 Nobel Prize winners for Economics, Chris Pissarides and Dale Mortesen.From economics we move on to the most expressive forms of creative art: from 6 to 14 July, the 37th edition of Pergine Spettacolo Aperto will be held with the participation of important players from the international cultural scene, avant-garde drama, young theatre companies, performances, videos, installations, urban design and unusual fringe events. In 2007, this festival in the Valsugana underwent changes with the opening of a workshop area at the former psychiatric hospital in the town. Today, “the art of being fringe” has become the fundamental philosophy of a festival that considers diversity a value, an essential feature of the evolutionary path of man. Another driving force behind artistic innovation with unquestionable energy is the hydroelectric plant in Fies, where the Drodesera festival has been held for thirty-two years. In the five rooms of this fascinating building, experimental encounters involve the theatre and visual arts, music, fashion, design, architecture and new trends. Centrale Fies – Ambienti per la Produzione di Performing Arts thus becomes, from 20 to 28 July, the stage of an unpredictable and continuously changing festival, in which performing art, visual arts and live music interact in different ways. Artistic creativity knows no boundaries and can be equally applied to avant-garde and classical music. In Trentino, one such example is the Accademia Internazionale di improvvisazione all’organo e al clavicordo. From 25 July to 4 August, it brings musicians, experts and students of ancient music from all over the world to Smarano and Coredo. This year, experimentation and training, master classes and courses will focus on the important aspect of modality and tonality in the lead up to festivities in 2013, dedicated to Arcangelo Corelli, a personality who has paved the way towards new approaches to making music that combine tradition with modern creativity. At the Accademia event, maestros and students will play prestigious instruments in the music room and in the beautiful small church of Smarano. A similar format, involving experimentation, studies and performances has led to the success of the MusicaRivaFestival, now at its 28th edition. From 16 July to 4 August, in the natural setting of the Upper Garda area, concerts will be held concerning various fields of classical music and opera. Before this, from 28 May to 2 June, the 18th Concorso Internazionale per Giovani Cantanti Lirici Riccardo Zandonai (Riccardo Zandonai International Contest for Young Opera Singers) will take place. In recent years, Placido Domingo, Paul Simon, Gilberto Gil and Gloria Gaynor have performed, among others. Another highly prestigious event is the Festival Internazionale W. A. Mozart, scheduled from 18 to 26 August in Rovereto, which celebrates its 25th edition with the unique theme of Alla turca. Mozart e l’esotismo (Mozart’s Turkish exoticism). The music production takes centre stage, with explicit reference to an exotic setting with Mozart’s opera entitled Abduction from the Seraglio. But the festival, which has always presented the works of the great Wolfgang also through contemporary expression, explores an approach to various musical traditions, including an evening with many talented musicians from non-western cultures who live in the Trentino region. Rovereto shows its deep cultural and artistic involvement, for example, in visual arts at the MART, with the Futuro Presente festival, an exhibition held from 15 to 17 June and from 15 to 18 November that explores interaction between various expressions of the arts and contemporary culture and with Educa, a national event on education scheduled from 28 to 30 September, which aims to promote reflection and debate between all those who do not wish to passively take part in the chorus of complaints about the delegitimization of schools, parental incompetence and uncontrollable pupils.

(Sounds of the Dolomites), the summer musical event of Trentino that brings great musicians to perform against a backdrop of the most beautiful mountains in the world, offers wonderful, unforgettable experiences, such as this event entitled Albe (Dawn in the Dolomites). Similar experiences can be found in Trekking, a 3-day trek in close proximity with musicians, sleeping in mountain refuges and sharing difficulties amid the silence of the mountains and music that goes beyond words. Some of the most extraordinary musicians that perform at I Suoni delle Dolomiti in Trentino have the honour of choosing, and having named after them, one of the tonewood spruce trees in the Valle di Fiemme, which were used by Stradivari and other great string-instrument makers to create the best violins and piano the soundboards in the world. In the Bosco che suona (Musical Wood), in Valmaggiore above Predazzo, where ceremonies take place that symbolically give musicians a tree, the virtuous relationship between art and nature in Trentino achieves alchemical completion. Last year the great maestro Salvatore Accardo played his precious violin, Guarneri del Gesù dating back to 1733, next to the spruce tree that had just been named after him and was surprised because he had never heard it vibrate so much. It also happens to those who are lucky enough to attend a concert in the Dolomites, the heart that vibrates in harmony with nature and great music.“If God had to choose a place to play, he would come here,” commented the great violinist Ivry Gitlis on a visit to the Arte Sella Cattedrale Vegetale in the Valsugana: 3 Gothic style open-air naves formed by 80 columns of 12-metre high intertwined branches, including a hornbeam and a 82x15-metre base, form a plant cathedral , the work of the artist Giuliano Mauri. It is one of the symbolic works of this international event of contemporary art in nature.

The Dolomites of the Val di Fassa will host the first concert, on 30 June, of the 18th edition of I Suoni delle Dolomiti 2012. From that day onwards, until 31 August, the mountains of Trentino will become a natural stage for concerts performed by musicians from all over the world. Many treats are included in the programme this year, beginning with Dolomiti D’InCanto, on 1 July, when ten choirs of Trentino will perform simultaneously at the same number of mountain refuges: a collective musical event held in honour of the mountains that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, a tribute to the peaks that overlook all the valleys of Trentino. This will be followed by trekking on Monte Cevedale accompanied by the cellist Mario Brunello, an old acquaintance of the Dolomites, and one of the most acclaimed violinists, and by the German Isabelle Faust, who fell in love with I Suoni delle Dolomiti after the event last year at the Laghi di Bombasèl. Wishing to take part in its most “extreme” form, she obtained a few days leave from the Berliner Philarmoniker to go trekking in the mountains of Trentino. Two prestigious concerts are scheduled for Dolomiti di Pace, another variation on the theme of I Suoni delle Dolomiti, which annually hosts musicians from areas of conflict in symbolic places of World War I.

At Forte Corno in the Valle del Chiese, Dobet Gnahoré is scheduled to perform. This singer, dancer and percussionist from the Ivory Coast, with a great voice and an overwhelming stage presence, is the daughter of the master percussionist Abidjan Boni Gnahorè. At Forte Zaccarana in the Valle di Sole, the 3MA will perform: Ballake Sissokò, Driss El Maloumi and Rajery, from Mali, Morocco and Madagascar respectively. They are masters and virtuosos of the instrument that represents their land: the first plays the Mali kora, a 21-string instrument made from a large pumpkin, the second plays the oud, or Moroccan lute, and the third plays the Madagascan valiha, a tubular zither made from two large bamboo tubes. The musicians scheduled to perform at I Suoni delle Dolomiti include singer-songwriters Simone Cristicchi, Samuele Bersani and Gianmaria Testa, the singer Cristina Donà, the trumpet and trombone duo Enrico Rava and Gianluca Petrella, as well as Banda Osiris, Paolo Fresu and Daniele di Bonaventura, all following in the footsteps of musicians who performed at previous editions such as Francesco De Gregori, Roberto Vecchioni, Max Gazzè, Fiorella Mannoia, Davide van de Sfroos, Daniel Hope, Noa, Gidon Kremer and Goran Bregovic.From music to visual arts, and from the mountains to rocks, leaves, branches and trunks: the raw materials for most of the works exhibited at Arte Sella, from 1 April to 31 December, the contemporary art event held in a natural setting in the Val di Sella, not far from Borgo Valsugana. Creative works by artists from all over the world provide a continuously changing outdoor art collection. The works at Arte Sella change in appearance with the seasons, just like the landscape. Over time, atmospheric agents destroy them and every year new ones are created. In 2012, an artistic contribution by the Belgian artist Bob Verschueren is expected, among others, who has created a work inspired by the myth of Sisphyus for the exhibition in the Valsugana. Another new feature is the beginning of collaboration with the architect Luc Schuiten, also Belgian, who will make a prototype of the “vegetable city” for Arte Sella, in response to the radical challenges imposed by climate changes. The Arte Sella exhibition is divided into two different sections. The ArteNatura tour (free admission) follows a 2-kilometre forest trail, along which you

can see about 25 works in the woods, including Tempio dell’amore by Belle Shafir, Spirale by Alois Steger, Rotazione by Paul Feichter and Corteccia strappata by Cameron Hockenson. It is an enjoyable 2-hour walk, mainly through woods, where you can discover works of art surrounded by nature. The entrance to the Malga Costa area (admission charged), open all year round, is not far from the arrival point of the ArteNatura trail. Once the home of shepherds for cattle breeding and butter and cheese production, today, it is a venue for theatre productions, concerts, photographic exhibitions and creative workshops. From 25 to 29 July, it will host Fucina Arte Sella, led by the cellist Mario Brunello with the participation, this year, of the actress Sista Bramini, as well as Marco Rizzi, Danilo Rossi, Marina Bartoli, Razek Francois Bitar and Alberto Allegrezza. Every year this event “shapes” very intimate performances previewed by the audiences of Arte Sella. There is just a short distance between the stage and the hall, and no microphones or amplifiers are used. Art and nature are also the protagonists in Mezzano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, thanks to attractive canzèi installations, piles of wood that turn into real works of art during the Mezzano Romantica event. Scheduled this year from 20 June to 26 August, meetings with poets, authors, philosophers and musicians will also take place.In addition to this art in nature event, another land art event is RespirArt Pampeago Green&White Gallery on Monte Latemar, from Baita Caserina to Monte Cornon, featuring large cocoons of wool and trees, uprooted by wind, shaped by an artist. In winter, ice sculptures can be seen in places even reachable on skis. Not far away, in the Bosco che Suona in the Valmaggiore, one of the places where the percentage of spruce trees suited to making violins and pianos increases from 8 per thousand to 10 percent, a spruce tree was symbolically presented to Uto Ughi and to about twenty other great musicians including Mario Brunello, Daniel Hope,

Then, Marcello Mazzucchi, an iconic figure of the forest and a poet, cored the tree, establishing that it was 230 years old. A spruce tree is presented to a violinist, and to all musicians chosen by the Scario, the President of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme, which has been managing the collectively owned forests and pastures of the valley for 900 years. This tradition has continued throughout history: The Magnifica Comunità has always donated part of the proceeds from the sale of timber to socio-cultural activities. The Bosco che suona project not only involves musicians but also visitors looking for an unforgettable experience. In Predazzo, you can take a special audio guide and then tour the woods in search of trees, just a few dozen metres apart, named after musicians. A plaque attached to each tree thanks the musician for having made the trees in the woods resonate so well. The numbers on the audio guide correspond to a plaque so you can listen to a description of the tree by the forest poet and a presentation of the musician, followed by the musician playing a piece dedicated to the tree. This intimate and revitalising experience in a unique location is intended for a few people who wish to be immersed in the silence of the woods and sublime music performed by great maestros. Only 20 audio guides are available because the musical wood is not suitable for crowds. It is a real mountain experience, which is also at the heart of the Tra le rocce e il cielo festival held in the Vallarsa, in the Piccole Dolomiti, from 30 August to 2 September, the so-called “Mountain Awareness Festival”. The remote Vallarsa is the ideal place to speak about mountains, their history and prospects, their encounter with art and especially with literary inspiration. “Solitude now has the fragrance of walnuts and pears, of potatoes and bread placed in the oven. Frost lies like silver veils on the meadows. I enter the woods to smell winter. I encourage goats to chase me on the slopes of the Laita. The air is strong, invigorating and persuasive as it tries to make me fly,” wrote Mario Martinelli, one of the two creators of the festival together with Fiorenza Aste. In these lines, the mountains appear to have primitive and maternal energy. Madre Montagna is also the name of the 2012 edition of the Il Mistero dei Monti festival in Madonna di Campiglio, scheduled from 27 July to 27 August. Every year, this event offers art exhibitions, literary, philosophical and scientific meetings, exhibitions and cinema screenings with internationally renowned guests, as well as themed trekking tours. The 10th edition is the ultimate expression of a path, which totally and symbolically celebrates the “mother mountains”, after exploring aspects of geology, poetry and films. The choice of this theme arose from a scientific view: the mountains are seen as a source of life rather than a distant rocky place or a seemingly silent mass of rocks. This edition aims to make people aware of the cultural, environmental and scientific aspects of the mountains, worthily celebrating everything that breathes in their “maternal” heart. Leading figures in the literary and mountaineering fields take part, including, in the previous edition, Erri De Luca, Cesare Maestri, Massimo Cacciari, Vera Slepoj and many others.

or a child visiting the ethnographic Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina (Museum of the Customs and Traditions of the Trentino People) in San Michele all’Adige, it is rather like

following in the footsteps of Alice in Wonderland. When you approach the enormous water-based machinery including a water mill, hammer and Venetian sawmill, you suddenly feel very small. When you observe the details of the reduced-scale models, for example, of the mountain dairy, you feel like a giant. Adults are also amazed and captivated by the wealth of exhibits at the museum, the large number of sections and topics, as well as detailed descriptions of the daily life of farmers and shepherds, woodworking, ceramics and how these ingenious machines work. All visitors are aware of the inventiveness and almost childlike curiosity of the founder, the great ethnographer Giuseppe Šebesta, who not only dismantled these objects, just like children do in order to understand how they are made, but also recreated all the stages in making them. For example, in the showcases we can see how a lump of iron becomes a spade or a lump of copper a pot. All the processing stages are clearly illustrated and do not require lengthy captions: the field, sowing seeds, harvesting, the mill etc. Discovering the rich traditional heritage of Trentino continues with a visit to the Ecomuseums of the Judicaria, Viaggio, the Val di Peio, Vanoi, Lagorai, Argentario and the Valle del Chiese, a “network” that covers the entire province and explores all the facets of the traditions and culture of this region. In these open-air museums that link the past to the future, the land with its people and culture replaces exhibition centres. The local inhabitants have chosen to embrace and enhance their roots, allowing visitors to leisurely explore the heart of Trentino, wandering through history, tradition and nature.

The Museo degli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina, housed in the rooms of the former seat of the Augustinian Provostry of 1145 in San Michele all’Adige offers a tour of the folk traditions and particularly the work culture and manual skills of Trentino. Its ingenious founder, an ethnographer of Trentino with Bohemian roots Giuseppe Šebesta, had a wide range of interests: he was also a documentary filmmaker, artist and photographer. His versatility still influences activities at the museum today. Šebesta also created animated puppets, and, as a tribute to this passion, on several evenings in July the museum hosts the Festival del Teatro di Figura Burattini in Musica, directed by the Trentino puppeteer Luciano Gottardi of Trentino. Many temporary exhibitions are also held, including one dedicated to the writings of shepherds of the Valle di Fiemme, scheduled from 20 April to 25 November. On 31 March and 1 April, the cloisters and courtyards of the monumental Augustinian complex will become a stage for the Festa dell’Etnografia presenting the 7 ecomuseums of Trentino with choirs, bands and folk groups. The Ecomuseo della Judicaria involves a broad and varied area that extends from an altitude of 3,170 metres, the highest point of the Brenta Dolomites, to 70 metres at the Varone waterfall: hence its slogan Dalle Dolomiti al Garda (From the Dolomites to Lake Garda).It also includes a variety of crops, where Bleggio walnut trees give way further south, around Lago di Tenno, to vines and olive trees. There are many opportunities for visits to medieval farm villages such as Canale di Tenno, Borgo di Rango with its ancient close-knit houses, and San Lorenzo in Banale, which all belong to the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. way to explore it. These tours pass through some of the poet’s favourite places, including the Franciscan convent of Campo Lomaso, the family home and the church of the Assunta in Dasindo. The tours are accompanied by a storyteller and enlivened by theatrical drama. In addition, a visit to the archaeological site, the recently opened Museo delle Palafitte in Fiavè is not to be missed.The Ecomuseo della Val di Peio is also known as the Piccolo mondo alpino, in reference to the traditional mountain life that can still be found in this north-west corner of Trentino, overlooked by the Ortles Cevedale mountain range. One example is Casa Graziòli, the original nucleus of the ecomuseum named after Maria Grazioli who lived there until 1991, also known as dela Bèga (in dialect after her nickname). This building in Strombiano is a rare example of a traditional farmstead and farm life, with its two old open-hearth kitchen stoves, two bread ovens (fóren dei panéti in dialect), a bedroom with wood panelling and a ceramic stove. On 9 August, this bread oven will be back in operation, turning out excellent bread as part of the event El pan de ‘na volta (Bread of bygone days). At the ecomuseum house in Celentino, a traditional weaving workshop has been created: not without reason the association that has promoted the ecomuseum is called LINUM (Italian acronym for Working Together to Describe Mountain Traditions), the Latin name of the textile fibre once widely used in the Alps. The Ecomuseo del Vanoi, in eastern Trentino, offers an attractive tour of the places and rural buildings where subsistence farming was practised. The ethnographic trail leads from the valley, namely, the village of Caoria at an altitude of just over 800 metres, to various pradi, or family farmsteads at medium altitudes, and then goes up to the mountain dairies and their meadows. At Caoria, the ethnographic trail house is situated, which introduces the trails and holds temporary exhibitions. At Pian de la Siega you can visit a multi-stage Venetian sawmill in operation, whereas at Pradi de Tognola, at an altitude of 1,219 metres, there is a casèra (dairy hut) and a traditional barn. At the Medaluna quarry, at an altitude of 1,350 metres, an open-air exhibition describes how fir trees were felled and sent down the valley. The trail then takes you up to the dairies, from Vesnàza de Sot at 1,586 metres to Vesnòt de Sora at 1,876 metres. On 22 July and 26 August at Fossernica di Fuori, I paesaggi del burro e del formaggio, event is scheduled as part of the tours of the mountain dairies Andar per malghe. The Ecomuseo del Lagorai includes the area formerly governed by the Lords of Castellalto, between the lower Valsugana and the southern side of the Lagorai mountain range, an area whose traditional life and economy was based on the pastures and woods of the mountains. These places can be explored by trekking through unspoilt nature, from chestnut groves, crossed by a path, to the mountain dairies in the Val Calamento, Sette Selle and Casapinello, which produce butter, ricotta and other types of cheese. You can then continue to the scenic viewpoint of Colle San Pietro in Torcegno, where the ruins of a medieval castle stand. On 15 July,

it hosts Passeggiando nel Medioevo, an event that lets you explore the history of the castle through ancient crafts, including flax processing, iron working, basket making and covering roofs with shingle. Telve di Sopra hosts a collection of over 2,000 ancient artisan tools. Also in the Valsugana, on the slopes of the Lagorai mountains stands the more recent Ecomuseo del Viaggio (Ecomuseum of Travelling), so-called because it is crossed by the Via Claudia Augusta Altinate road, which connected Altino to Augsburg. It also reminds us of the journey of the “cromeri”, the print pedlars who disseminated Remondini and Tesini prints in Europe, almost always departing on their travels on foot. In Pieve Tesino, the Centro Documentazione Stampe Ambulantato Tesino has been set up, displaying a rich collection of prints. A print museum will shortly open at Casa Buffa Giacantoni. Not far away is the Museo Casa De Gasperi, housed in the house where the statesman Alcide de Gasperi of Trentino was born on 3 April 1881. A small exhibition illustrates, the most important steps in his extraordinary personal and political life, starting with his close ties with his homeland. At the Ecomuseo dell’Argentario, to the north-east of Trento, you can discover a mining event that happened around the year 1200, when a large number of German and Bohemian miners known as “Canopi”, after the place name Knappen - Canopa (mine with horizontal entrance), arrived to extract silver from Monte Calisio. The area was continuously mined for about 300 years, becoming one of the leading mining districts in Europe. Today, the Sentiero delle Canope, near Lake Santa Colomba, is one of many trails that lead to the silver mines. The large number of vertical and horizontal mine entrances shows how much these mines were exploited by these German miners in the past. Along the trail there are information boards describing excavation techniques and work in the mines. Suitable for everyone, it is open all year round. After silver extraction, from the year 1500 onwards red, grey and white limestone, used since Roman times, was extracted also due to significant modernization works in Trento commissioned by the Prince Bishop Bernardo Clesio. At Pila, near the village of Villamontagna close to Trento, you can visit the ancient quarries. As an alternative name, the Ecomuseo della Valle del Chiese has chosen Porta del Trentino (Gate to Trentino) as it is situated on the border with Lombardy in a pivotal location between the high mountains and the plain. It hosts a wide range of memorabilia, art and nature objects. One of its highlights is the ethnographic trail from Rio Caino to Cimego, a 4-kilometre trek of 3 hours through pine and beech woods, which ascends from 450 to about 750 metres in altitude, and takes you past the ancient trades of traditional

rural life, such as the old forge, where hammers are moved by stream water and blacksmiths forge iron. An old mill grinds wheat, oats and corn next to a wood oven that bakes bread with a traditional flavour. Another extremely interesting attraction is the restored Venetian sawmill, where visitors can learn about the ancient techniques of timber processing. Roe buck and deer can be seen in less crowded periods. Several information boards illustrate typical tools that are going out of use, including chisels for shaping granite, and facilities such as a calchera (kiln) for producing lime, and a poiat (wood pile) for producing charcoal. Afternoon workshops and an evening show entitled La fuga di fra Dolcino are scheduled here on 1 and 16 August. In addition, Trentino promotes the cultural heritage of 3 linguistic minorities, the Ladini of the Val di Fassa, the Mòcheni of the Valle del Fersina and the Cimbri of the Luserna plateau. The Museo Ladino di Fassa inaugurated in 2001 and designed by the architect Ettore Sottsass, houses ethnographic collections of the Istitut Cultural Ladin, which illustrates the evolution of the Ladin people through the testimony of its material and spiritual culture from its origins to the present day. The Istituto Culturale Mòcheno in Palù del Fersina organises exhibitions on local culture, whereas the Gruab va Hardimbl is a medieval mine. In Fierozzo, there is the Filzerhof, an ancient Mòcheno farmstead that exhibits many original objects, and the Sog van Rindel, a Venetian sawmill in operation. The Centro di documentazione di Luserna, which organises conferences on Cimbri culture, is also a very popular museum that holds temporary exhibitions on various themes particularly the Great War, which will be the protagonist, on 12 August, of a conference entitled “I cimiteri di guerra” (The War Cemetries).

Blacksmiths and stonemasons at work in Bocenago on 15 August and the battle between the Tyroleans and the Paduans in Pergine Valsugana. There is never a dull moment in Trentino, a kaleidoscope of events put the spotlight on traditions and historical re-enactments, and much more. Many other festivals focus on shows for adults and children, or art in its most varied and original forms, such as Giro del mondo in 80 giorni (Around the World in 80 Days) in Riva del Garda, as well as shows dedicated to water in Comano Terme. Then there are street artists in Bondone and other artists who create new sundials to enrich the Monclassico collection. Wood carvers can be found in Ossana, Baselga di Piné and the Tesino plateau, and puppets in Andalo in honour of the “barbatàngheri”, the traditional storyteller. Literature is also a protagonist when the public meets authors in San Martino di Castrozza, Comano Terme and Caldonazzo, with debates in Mezzano with poets and philosophers. Many prestigious music festivals are held, with traditional music or music from faraway countries, including accordions in Rumo, brass instruments in Primiero, gospel songs in Cembra, bands in Caldés, rock music in Bezzecca, Ladin folk groups in Canazei, and piano recitals in Baselga di Piné and Locca. The Trentino region likes to break down barriers and stereotypes, leaving scope for creativity and imagination, offering a wide range of events to entertain everyone. You are spoilt for choice.

From 1 to 26 June, the streets of Trento are animated with Feste Vigiliane dedicated to the patron saint, with historical events including the Palio dell’Oca, a raft race along the river Adige, and the Mascherada dei Ciusi e Gobj, a battle over polenta, recalling an ancient feud between the towns of Trento and Feltre (www.festevigiliane.it). The area comprising not only Trento but also Monte Bondone and the Valle dei Laghi will celebrate the 500th anniversary of Cardinal Madruzzo from 6 to 8 July in Castel Madruzzo, and from 12 to 15 July will hold Feste Madruzziane in Calavino with demonstrations of ancient crafts, games and shows. From 1 to 31 July as part of the Notte dei musei event, the Museodegli Usi e Costumi della Gente Trentina in San Michele all’Adige organises the Festival del Teatro di Figura Burattini in Musica (Puppet Festival), directed by the puppeteer Luciano Gottardi of Trentino. From 8 to 10 June, in Sacco in the Rovereto and Vallagarina area, Un Borgo e il suo fiume is scheduled, a festival linked with the river Adige, which includes the Palio delle zattere (Raft Race), bicycle rides along the river, exhibitions and workshops for children at the foot of the Torre Civica. From 1 to 3 June, Comun Comunale is a re-enactment of historical events in the seven municipalities of the Destra Adige, with folk traditions, ancient crafts, figures in medieval costume, and tastings of local dishes and wines. In Nogaredo, from 30 April to 1 May, the Calendimaggio event celebrates the rebirth of nature after the harsh winter with exhibitions, debates and concerts.From 23 to 26 August, Riva del Garda hosts Notte di Fiaba, a creative event for children. This year it follows in the footsteps of Phileas Fogg and his French valet Passepartout, protagonists of the novel by Jules Verne Around the World in 80 days, with spectacular settings, workshops, music, entertainment, games, and a firework display over the lake (www.nottedifiaba.it). From 4 to 12 August in Canale di Tenno, the Garda Trentino area also offers Rustico Medioevo, a festival with storytellers introducing shows, figures in period costumes, banners and torches, as well as polenta with “peveraa” (pepper sauce). From 28 to 30 September, Riva del Garda also hosts Blogfest, an event that brings together everything

Dro, from 25 to 27 May, will host Voto di San Abbondio, which not only involves historical pageants and shows but also renews the solemn vow made by the population to San Abbondio in 1630, after escaping a plague epidemic (www.dodicisabati.it). Comano Terme, from 23 to 29 July, will host InAqua, a festival dedicated to water with shows, concerts, workshops, storytelling, conferences, film screenings, guided tours and debates. From 1 July to 31 August, Comano Terme will become a literary salon and host Trentino d’autore, meetings with nationally and internationally renowned authors who will present their books to the public.On the Altopiano della Paganella and in Andalo, Cavedago, Fai della Paganella and Molveno, in July and August, Arriva il Barbatàngheri will take place. The Festival Internazionale di Teatro di Figure e Arti Popolari (International Festival of Figure Theatre and Folk Arts) pays tribute to the storytellers and pedlars of the Trentino tradition, with shows of international artists offering a variety of techniques including mime, figure theatre, shadow theatre, puppets, marionettes and Sicilian puppets. On the 15 August, Bocenago, in the Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo and the Val Rendena area, will host Vecchia Rendena. Come eravamo, with local people in period costumes who revive ancient crafts: along the village streets and courtyards you can see knife-grinders, stonemasons, blacksmiths, wood cutters, shoemakers and washerwomen. In Monclassico and Presson in the Val di Sole, from 14 to 21 July the Settimana delle meridiane will take place with internationally renowned artists who interpret the history and traditions of the valley, creating new sundials (www.meridianemonclassico.it). On 23 and 24 June, Arcadia animates the ancient village of Caldes with music by Italian and foreign bands, whereas from 6 to 11 August, the Parco della Pace di Ossana hosts internationally renowned sculptors at work for the Legno e sensazioni event.Ladin traditions are at the heart of a triptych of events in the Val di Fassa over the summer. From 6 to 8 July at Canazei, Te anter i tobiè will be held with a visit to the ancient hay barns (www.teanteritobie.it)). From 3 to 5 August in the Val San Nicolò the Festa Ta Mont will be hosted, with the traditional “Contia Ladina”, a re-enactment of a Ladin legend (www.festatamont.it), whereas in Canazei, from 30 August to 2 September, the Gran festa da d’istà is scheduled, featuring Ladin folklore (www.granfesta.com). In the Valle di Fiemme, the Centro di Documentazione of the Fondazione Stava di Tesero offers an educational tour entitled Della memoria, which takes you to the places in the valley affected by the catastrophe of 1985 (www.stava1985.it). From 14 July to 2 September 2012, the Centro di Arte Contemporanea di Cavalese will host the exhibition Alle porte del silenzio (At the Gates of Silence), with paintings by Robert Bosisio and sculptures by Willy Verginer (www.artecavalese.it). Also in Tesero, from 24 August to 2 September, Trentino danza estate will take place, with courses for young dancers (www.trentinodanzaestate.it). From 20 June to 26 August, in Mezzano, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”, in the San Martino di Castrozza, Primiero, Passo Rolle and Vanoi area, will host Mezzano Romantica, with poets, authors, historians, philosophers, musicians, actors and debates in the rural and architectural buildings of the historic centre, accompanied by serenades and romantic symphonic music events (www.mezzanoromantica.it). In the first week of July, at Villa Welsperg, the headquarters of the Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino Nature Park, you can visit from the end of May to 30 September the exhibition entitled Il Cibo nelle Alpi, organised in collaboration with the Museo Storico di Trento (www.parcopan.org). In San Martino di Castrozza, from 30 July to 31 August, DolomitIncontri will take place, with authors presenting their latest books. Music will animate Primiero and the neighbouring area, from 2 to 7 July, with the Primiero Dolomiti Festival, a music festival dedicated to brass instruments (www.primierodolomitifestival.it). Trentino Book Festival, a 3-day event for lovers of books, particularly books about local areas and beauty spots, is scheduled in Caldonazzo in the Valsugana from 15 to 17 June, with the participation of authors, philosophers, poets and journalists (www.trentinobookfestival.it). From 30 July to 5 August, in Borgo Valsugana, the Palio de la Brenta will take place. This re-enactment includes traditional games such as slingshotting and archery, and a raft race along the river Brenta, concluding with a historic pageant by the Farinota and Semolota “contrade” (ancient districts). From 23 to 28 July, the Altopiano del Tesino will hold Luci e ombre del legno, a sculpture symposium featuring artists from all over Italy and Europe (www.luciedombredellegno.it). From 27 to 29 July, Pergine Valsugana will be animated by the Feste Medioevali with a battle between the Tyroleans and Paduans in the town centre streets and squares. From 22 July to 25 August, the Valle di Cembra will organize Masi In…visibili, a festival that, through the experimental theatre with its links to the past and the theme of the landscape and environment, aims to encourage reflections on man and his complexities.

It will be an open dialogue with shared memories, featuring performances that develop themes connected with the Val di Cembra and the mountains (www.masiinvisibili.com). From 23 June to 1 September, Piné - Cembra Musica will be held, a season of concerts that includes the piano festival Le Tastiere Raccontano, the Concerti del Sagrato in ancient churches, the Trekking musicali, and the Cembra Musica Nonsologospel, a weekly workshop for choirs, conductors and gospel, jazz and swing enthusiasts. In Baselga di Piné, on Wednesdays in July and August, Posaranda will take place, an art and craft symposium focusing on porphyry. In the Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna area, from 4 to 18 August, I Guardiani del Maso is scheduled, a sculpture symposium open to everyone with artists at work in the beautiful setting of the18th century Maso Spilzi in Folgaria. In Lavarone, from 6 to 13 July, Le frontiere della psicoanalisi will be held, a 2-day study session promoted by the Centro studi psicoanalisi applicata Gradiva with an exhibition of sector-related publications, a film festival and a conference. From 1 July to 7 September, summer on the Altipiani di Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna will also feature Confini di Guerra, Confini di Pace, with conferences attended by experts and guided tours to the forts and battlefields of the Great War. At the Centro Culturale di Locca in the Valle di Ledro, from 8 to 17 August, Kawai 2012… in rosa will be held, a piano festival featuring internationally renowned musicians, including Leonora Armellini, who won the Janina Nawrocka special prize at the International Chopin Contest in Warsaw, Ingrid Fliter and Anton Dressler, Mariangela Vaccatello and the Orchestra Haydn of Trento and Bolzano (www.ledroinmusica.it). In Tremalzo on 11 February, 26 May, 11 August and 10 November, Le 4 Stagioni di Tremalzo will take place, four concerts held at an altitude of 1600 metres. In Bezzecca on 21 June, the Festa della Musica will feature artists of all musical genres, who will perform on the most unusual stages (www.ledroinmusica.it). On 28 and 29 July in Prè, Notte di Fuoco will be held, with a prehistoric bonfire at the pile-dwelling village of the Museo di Ledro (www.palafitteledro.it). This year, in Palù del Fersina in the Valle dei Mòcheni, the Parco Letterario Robert Musil will be inaugurated. From May to January 2013, the public is invited to explore the places mentioned by the great Austrian author, in an exhibition entitled Musil en Bersntol. La grande esperienza della guerra in Valle dei Mòcheni (Musil en Bersntol. The War Experience in the Valle dei Mòcheni). From 28 to 30 June the valley also offers Notte bianca and Simposio degli artisti del legno, featuring sculptors at work and many other activities for children and adults. On 4 August, Forte Larino di Lardaro in Valle del Chiese will host the show Il Deserto dei Tartari, a theatre adaptation by Maura Pettorruso, in which the fort turns into the Fortezza Bastiani described in the novel by Dino Buzzati. Bondone in strada is the title of performances by street artists scheduled on 14 and 15 August in the village of the same name, whereas on 27 July Castel San Giovanni, above Bondone, will host Racconti a castello sulle tracce dei Lodron, storytelling, music and tastings of local products. On 11 August in Bolbeno in the Valli Giudicarie, Notte di Note will take place, an evening when you can discover traditional crafts to the rhythm of folk music, and taste “capus”, a kind of meatball made of bread, cheese, herbs and egg. On 5 August in Breguzzo, Vivilavalle, an ecological walk, is planned along the Val di Breguzzo accompanied by the music of Bömische Judicarien and by demonstrations of daily activities of bygone days.
