Alison and Matthew King are two of the most revered (and feared!) instructors in the Graphic Design program at The Art Institute of Phoenix. It’s because this dynamic duo have very big hearts — and expectations — for their students.

Alison, an associate professor, says she and Matthew first collaborated (and fell in love) at Scottsdale’s Saguaro High School while working on the yearbook staff, where she was editor and he was photographer. Both attended college in Manhattan, NY – she at Parsons School of Design and he at Eugene Lang College – spending nearly a decade together in the Big Apple.

In addition to teaching, Alison designs and edits the award-winning website ModernPhoenix.net, which documents and reports on mid century modern architecture and design in the Phoenix Metro area. She is a fierce activist for architectural preservation and organizes the annual Modern Phoenix Home Tour. This year, The Art Institute of

Program of Study: Digital Media Production

Nearly 14,000 people – including some of The Art Institute staff and students – attended Phoenix Comicon 2010, the signature pop-culture event of the Southwest held the last weekend of May at the Phoenix Convention Center. The school had a booth offering an “Enter-to-Win Art Classes” contest promoting our Fall Saturday Studio session. Participants had to draw their favorite character – superhero or villain – on the entry sheets. Supply Store gift cards were also awarded to winning entries.

Jeffrey graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media Production in June 2007. He was able to connect his passion with a career at Santy, a full-service ad agency, where he primarily works on web design and motion graphics for television commercials. Movies like “Minority Report” have influenced him, specifically their use of interaction between the actors and their surroundings.

“David Stipes, one of my instructors, pushed me to excel in the program. It was very apparent that he was in it to help us succeed in our industry,” Jeffrey says. “I’m grateful for the opportunity that was given to me upon my graduation from The Art Institute of Phoenix.”

Phoenix offered a $25,000 Modern Phoenix Interior Design Scholarship. One of Alison’s senior-level classes designed all the collateral and the website for the campaign.

When he’s not teaching introductory design courses, Matthew likes to grill and barbecue and makes the best pulled pork you’ll ever have. He’s also restoring the couple’s 1946 Haver Home to its original condition, including installing vintage cabinets and appliances.

Students delight in comparing and contrasting the teaching styles of Alison & Matthew King, but most agree that the trait they share is high expectations. “It’s my role to push students beyond what they thought they were capable of. It might result in growing pains, but later graduates thank me for the experience,” Alison says.

The Kings are dedicated to each individual’s success and use their collective insight to ensure that students are continuously supported from first year to last.

She earned a full-tuition scholarship to study in a Culinary Program at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix and the opportunity to serve as “Intern for a Day” at Food Network Kitchens in New York City.
