NABBA'sChampionship X (Washing-ton, DC -NABBA 93) look to be oneof the biggest and best days of brassbanding ever. Master Sergeant PaulWilhoit and his working groups areputting together a package that shouldprovide something for ev€ryone.

The weekend starts with bands ar v-ing at our official hotel, the Hyatt Re-gency in Crystal City Virginia. Be sureto go to the NABBA 93 informationdesk upon arIival. Rehearsal facilitieswill be available there in the hotel. Theevening's formal events will occur inBruckner Hall, home of TheArmy Bandon histodc Fort Myer. NABBA'S meet-ing for the general membership will beheld on Friday evening rather than fol-lowing the awards ceremony. This willbe followed by a clinic by Philip Sparkewith Steve Bulla and The SalvationArmy's National Capital Band. Theexhibits will be open at 6:00 P.M. andthese promise to offer a wide variety ofproducts to peruse and purchase.

1992 Summer BrassBand Workshops

For the seventh year NABBA andYarnaha Corporation of America haveco-sponsored a series of five summerbrass band workshops. Perry Watsonstarted the workshops in 1986 and wasthe clinician for the first four years.Paul Droste took over in 1990 and hasconducd the workshops since then.Themain purpose of thesc workshopsis to start new brass bands in rcgionswhere there is sufficient interest andidentifiable leadership. Another pur-pose is to strengthen brass bands inthatarea already in existence butstill innecd of help and cncou.agemcnt.

Thc Yamaha Corporation of Americacontinues to make a major commit-mcnt to thcsc workshops. Yamahascnds a complete sct of brass band in-strumcnts, including percussion, toeach workshop.Workshopparticipantsform a rcading band and experience awidc variety of brass band musicdur-ing the weekend. Local hosts includemusic dealers, schools, and eristingbrass bands. Yamaha provides the fund-ing for shipping of the instruments,and all expensesof the clinician.

The first "summer" workshop actuallytook place in lanuary and was an addi-tion to the five workshops of summer92. The workshop in Slracuse"NY, onJanuary 17-18, took place in near bliz-zard conditions. Norm Wanzet a banddirector in Onondaga County, pro-pos€d a brass band workshop for thefeachers and some local adults as a partof Onondaga County's All-CountyMusic Festival, thus providing an ac-tivity for teachers while their studentswere in rchearsal. The workshop bandperformed a short noon'time concertfor the students, exposing them to thebrass band sound and litemture, withb ef commentary from Paul Droste onthe Nstory of British-style brass bands.

The filst warm summer workshop washeld inCincinnati,OH,onMayl and 2.The host was Bill Harvey, Vice Presi-dent of Buddy Ro8ers Music. As a rc-sult of this workshop, a band is nowbeinS formed under thc leadership ofAnita Cocker Hunt, Divisional MusicDirector of The Salvation Army inSouthem Ohio. Two members of TheCommonwcalth Erass Band (Louis-villeF--<onductor Jerry Amend and Ebcornehst Jackie Amend played in theworkshop band. There is no shortageof finc brass players in the Cincinnatiarca, so this is a very good location inwhich to start a brass band. NABBAmembers who attended ChampionshipX in Columbus will remembcr AnitaHunt as one of the conductors of theCala Concert massed bands,

Anoka, Minnesota, a northern suburbofMinneapolis, was thc siteofthe nextworkshop, Junc5and 6. There are manyfine community bands in this area, sothere is a great deal of interest fromthcse players in brass banding. Theorganizcr was David Peterson and theworkshop was hosted by RichardPerkinsat thc Anoka-RamscyConimu-nity College. The players were superb,and the workshop band was able toread the most difficult pieces in thc

The workshop in Branson, Missouri,on.June 19 and 20 was an interestingcombination of business and pleasure.Branson is located in the southwestcorner of Missouri, in the Ozarks. Thetown has over 20 theaters with showsduring the afternoons and evcnings.Drcste was able to sandwich in TheRay Stevens shows and The Mel TillisShow between the brass band s€ssions.Host Brian Sheehan, a member of TheRay Stevens Band, recruited 42 partici-pants. The Bmnson Afts Council cov-ered the registration fees and provideda nice lunch for the parhcipants.Brallson is a wonde ul vacation site,and will soon have a brass band toenhance its theaters and shows,

The workshop in Ccttysburg (PA), onJuly 10 and 11, provided an opportu-nity to visit the historical sights alongwith conducting the workshop atCettysburg High School. The band di-rector, Ben Jones, sewed as host andorganizer. Ben also directs a ceremo-nial brass band at the high school thatwearc Civil War-style uniforms. Thereare obviously a lot of distractions inthis area, but there is also genuine in-terest in forming a brass band. Theworkshop concludcd witha short con-cert under the Lincoln Tre€ near thehigh school.

Thefinal workshop was held atSouth-western Michigan College, DowagiacMI, onJuly 31and August 1. The work-shop was expert ly organized byJonathan Korzan, Dircctor ofBands atSMC. District Manager Jay Schreiberdrove from Grand Rapids to assist. Abrass band was rcccntly startcd at thecollege, and its first public pc ormancewas coordinated with thc workshop.Thc workshop concluded with a con-'cert

in downtown Dowagiac as partofan outdoors Arts Festival. The bandprovidcd musicas a prelude to a TalcntShow and other activities.

An avcragc of 29 musicians attendcdeach of the five summer workshops,resulting in almost 150 new member-ships for NABBA. Thcre is a verygoodprcbability that each workshop willhave been catalyst for a brass band inthatarea. FormerYamaha MarketMan-ager for Brass, Johnny Woody, andf ormer NABBA president Paul Droste,coordinated thc workshops. Johnny isnow Distsict Manager in Califomia andhas been replaced by Gary Marsh. Spe-cial rccognition and thanls are due toJay Wanamaker, Yamaha Director ofMarketing, for his continucd supportof thes€ workshops.

Thc Unitcd States Army Band(Perching'sOwn) will serve as host forseveral exciting workshops in early1993. All of these cvcnts are frcc andopen to the public and are held at TheBand's headquarters on historic FortMyer.

Prominent guest clinicians in'clude Harvey Phillips, Dan Perantoni,Brian Bowman, and Winston Morris,Concerts, recitals, master classes, andlotsof socializingareinstore.Thisyear'sconferencc includes brass choir night,conductcd by Captain ThomasPalmatier. Smokey Mountain British Brass Bandnow has a year-round seasonl On July4 the band participad in the gala open-ing of Pack Place, a new arts and educa-

tion cente. in Asheville, NC. In mid-July the band travelled to CrandfatherMountain, Inville, NC, for a fourilaytour, plalng for the fourth year at theScottish Highland Games. Septcmbcrt9 and 20 saw the band at the famedBiltmore Estate,Ashevillc,plalng fourconcerts for lnternational Expo I. InOctober, the band returned toHendersonville, NC, for the third con-secutive season to play a fund raisingconce for the local Civitan Club. The U.S. Army Brass Band kicked off

its 12th s€ason in style with a tull housefor its October 22 concert at BruckerHall, home of The Army Band. Thenight marked the unveilingofa newlytilcd studio, partofa major renovationprojectdue tobe completed inearly93,just in time for theNABBA Champion-ship. The concert began with Himes'new arrangement of the national an-them followed by the exciting "StrikeUp the Band." Klontz: I have eni)yed playing yourcomposidons in The United StatesArmy Bmss Band, especially yourwork "Firestorm." What was youlinspiration for this work?

Bulla: The inspiration fot 'firestorm"

was the Persian Gulf War. CaPtainPalmaber told me that I was beingcommissioned by TUSAB to wribe awork for the brass band. My firstidea was to do a Pakiotic tune, butthen my thoughb tumed towatdsan origrnal work. The wat was goingon at this time and it was $rch amediae!€ntthatitinspired theideasin "Firestorm." It has iust been se-lecd as the test-Piece for the Euro-pean Brass Band ChamPionshiP.

Klonts:Thereare many interesting usesof muEs in yout wotks. How didyou develop your concePts for theus€ of mutes?

Bullar I've develop€d my conc€pts formutes through trial and enor.I willtry out an idea-if it doesn't work,I'll try sometNng different in mYnext work. With brassbands thecoloryou have b work with is very lim-ited, iust brass and Percussion, so Itry to getas many different contrastsas Dossible. Mutes are one of theextreme *ays to achieve a colorchange. When I am writin& I try totreat the instruments in families. ForexamDle, ihe comeb and tromboneswould be the bright family ard ev-erythingelse would be thedark fam-ily. If I want a lot of contrast I'll scotethe comets and tsombones in straightmutes, which is the thinnest soundDossible, and then move to a darkkey vrith open alto horns, badtones,euphoniums, and tubas.

Klonb: Were you inlluenced by anYparticular composers or works?

Bulla: The main brass band comPosersthat I grew up listening to were EricBalI and Erik Leidzen. Both hap-

pened to be Salvation Army com-posers as well as professional writ-ers. The idea of using families ofsounds came from lisbning to andlooking at the scores of l€idzen. Heof ten moved f rcmbrightinstrumentsmuted to open low brass in a darkkey. More recendy l've been usingmutes in less conventronal waYs,such as muting alto homs. There is asecdon in "Firestorm" where thehoms are mud. By adding horn-bone mutes to the horn section Youhave another unique color to workwith.

Klonb: Have you seenalto homs mudb,efore?

Bulla: In rec€nt yea$, Elgar Howafthhas done it and l've also s€en it insohe o(hestial transcriPtions foibrass band by Howard Snell. Thercare othe$ as well.

KlonE: What about the use of mutesfor low brass?

Bulla: A specific reason fot menot writ_ing mutes in the low brass is thatmostbands do not have these mutes.Another reason is that if I am writinSfor a particular publisher, he maybalk at publishing a work with a lotof low blassmutes. Heknowsthataband director is not going to buy anynew music which calls for mutesthat his band doesn't own.

KlonE: How do you decide to usemutes? Do you develop your ideaswith mutes in mind or do you addthem later?

Bulla: When I am writing I am usuallythii&ing of an idea muted at thattime. I don't retum to the work laterand add mutes. I probably had theidea marked muted in my sketch inthe first place.

Klontzr As a composer, do you Preferany particular t)?e or makeofmute?

Bull.: I prefer the metal mutes over theplastic and cardboard. I like theirpiercing quality. They seem to havea more consistent quality.

Klontz: As a conductor, do you try toget each section uni fied in choic€s ofmutes?

Bulla: When I am in ftont of a band,such as the National Capital Band, Itry to match mutes. I hY to get themto use the same make, or at least thesame tyPe. I also try to mahh instru_mmts. In the National CaPital Bandall comets are Bachs and all the coni_cal instrurnenb are Besson-Sover_ei8ns.

Klontz: In solo passages I try to use themute which grves me the best resultin that paficular solo. How do Youfeel about that.

Bullar I agree that in solo passages itshould be up to the individual to usewhich ever gets the Fb done best.

Klontz: Do you consider intonationproblems when writing fot mutes?

Bulla: That isa good quesbon.I dorltthink a lot of high school and collegeplayers clnsider what haPFns k)the intonation of a brass instrurnentwhen you put in a mute. When I amwriting I cannot think about that. Ileave that uP to the PIaYer or theband leader to correct (lt is 6d visablefor all brass players to work wi$ atuner when trying mutes in order todiscover the pitch change).

KlonE: There is an intetesting use ofthe harmon mute in the Eb SoPranopart of "Firestorm." Was thisanex-periment?

Bulla: There is a unique influence onmy use of a harmon mute in thiscase. When I was at Berklee,I bok anaFandng courseon the stYleofDukeEllington. One of the things he didwas voice a chord in the humPetsection in four parts and have thetrumpet play the "blue" note with aharmon mute. You can hear the notebut it has an odd hmbre to it, like anovertone. This is the effect I waslooking Ior in "Fircstorm." Whenthe muted soprano comes in with aparallel melody at the 5th above themuted comets it is meant to be a

The Music ol Elgat Houalll is a series ofmmpositionsand arrangementsbyoneof the leading figures of the brass bandmovement. Recent publications inthis series, from Rosehill Music, includean arrangemmt of Ellington's In a Sen-thneital Mdfi,and a ethereal compo-sition called AJ.enlit in Coeli

Howarth is in cornlortable territorywhen he takes an Ellington ballad, ft aSentimental Mood, and scores it forflugelhorn solo with brass band ac-companiment. The acompaniment islight yet lush sounding - primaiilyhotns, baritonet muted comet andbombones, and glockenspiel. Thenugelhorn stays in mid-rangc and givesthe player an opportunity to "sing along and swing a litde'. The accompa-niment is medium-easy and playingtime is about 2.5 minutes. This Diecewill fit very nicely in any concert pro-gram and requires a minimum of re-hearsal time. It is a finc arraneement ofan Ellington standard, and iudienceswill loveit.

Ascendit in Coeli was written in 1976 inmemory of Howarth's father, wholoved hymn tunes. The hymn tuneheie is not familiar to my American/Protestant eart and isnotidentified inthe score,

The band must b€ divided to play thispiece. A solo cometis to be situated off-stage, as are the bells. Thrce cometsprovide a fanf.re group, also off-stage.The remainder of the band is seated on-stage, but one euphonium and the tu-bas and tam-tam are separated fromthe tutti cornets, flugelhom, tenorhoms,baritones, one euphonium, and korn-bones, Two conductorsare required as

much of the piece is not rhythmicallyslalchronized.

The hlmn tune is intsoduced by the off-stage solo comet accompanied by toll-ingbellsand sustainedeuphoniumandtubas. The fanfare group (The HeraldAngels) then enters and leads into thefirst verse of the hymn, scored in thehigher pitched tutti group. On fte sec-ond vers€, the lowergroup enters.butis not aoordinated rhythmically withthe first group (thus requiring a secondconductor). The effect is shrnning asthe fanfare group is also involved wi thits own independent part. The pieceends as it bcgan, with the off-stage solocornet and bells fading into the dis-tance.

Adventuresome bands looljng for aPiece of musical substance with con-temporary scoring and .hythmic com-plexity will appreciate the time andcffort it takes to prepaie it for perfor-mance. Audiences should find it to bea moving and, perhaps, overwhelmingexperience. Plafng time is about sixminutes, and, in that time, there areawesome effects, yet logical develop-ment and dir€rtion. A predicted audi-ence rcsponse would be silence, hop-ing that no one would brcak the spellby applauding.

A third piece received from Rosehill isArirfarlr, composed by Ray Steadrnan-Allen. Itis a pleasure to find Steadman-Allen writing for contesting bands af-ter his retirement from The SalvationArmy. It should also be noted thatA,naranth wasr4lcrchd as theThird Sec-tion test piece for the'1992 finals of theNational Brass Band Championshipsof Great Britain. To quote the score,"The tide of the work refers to a legcnd,an irnaginary purple flower, mysteri-ous in that it never fads or dies. ln anextended single movement, the musicexplores thecolourc and terturesof theband."

Anannlh opens with a maje€tic an-dante that leads to a rapid alegro in 3,/4 tirne, one beat to the bar. This is themain section of the piece and is thor-oughly develop€d. After being brieny

interrupted by an andante and an allegro moderato, it returns to nearly finishthe piece. A shortallegro section pushesthe piece to a satisfying conclusion.

The sclring is solid and safe, yet thereis variety in the tempot style, and har-mony. There are no excessive technicaldemands, butthe plalng timeof aboutnine minutes requires endunnce andconcentration. The piece is lFical, logi-cal, and interesting - and a good choicefor a developing band that wants toplay a legitimate test piece.

At the top are two simply srun-ning performances by Britannia Build-ing (Howard Snell), showing why theywon: '^lear of the Dragon" (breathhk-ing speed and accuracy) and "FiveBlooms" (they make this rare bloomcome to life!). All the other bands doquite well, though the r(rodingofBlackDyke does not flatter them, the bandseemingly picked up at an odd anglecompared to other takes thatday. Servesas a good overview of the contest andthe gala.

The annual Fall board meeting ofNABBA was held in Washington at theHyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal City, andat Brucker Hall, Fort Myer.

The bulk of the session dealt with aepecb of the April 2-3, 1993 Champion-ship6, including schedule, facilitics, testpieces, contest proccdures. Reportswere given by Sara North on our finan-cial status NABBA currently in goodcondition), Paul Droste on 1992 Cham-pionship review, and Befl Wiley onmembership. In the latter it was re-po ed that NABBA holds 5 corporatemembershipt 27 hembcr bands, 825associate/studcnt/and individualmembers, the latter an increase of 134from 1991 (Much of itdue to Workshopinvolvement:)

Further contest matters focused on ex-Pense proiectcd (approved) with achange that only Firt Plac€ bannerswill be prcs€nted (certificates fo. zndand 3rd place winne.s).

In addition, open iudging was approvedonce again and a new scoring proce.dure was established that will eliminate s.ore totals and will rely on aplacement procedure (ie, judges de-cidebands in rank, not in a total score).

Deadlines for the receipt of scores andapplications were established (Marchand February lst rcspectively) as oFposed to post-marked dates in previ-ous years. Don Kneeburg will coordi-nate a reading band for the Fridayevening of our weekend.

The '1994 NABBA Contest has beenapprovcd for North Carolina StateUniversity (Frank Hammond).
