The Wonder of It All: Morning Has Broken

By Mark Jurkovich

One recent Sunday, our organist chose to play the hymn “Morning Has Broken” for the Invo-cation. I decided to follow along, so found it in the hymnal and read the lyrics as he played. The words came alive for me that day. I never paid close enough attention to them before. I can imagine the author waking up one morn-ing, thanking God for a beautiful sunrise, and trying to imagine what it must have been like that first morning; on the day the Lord rested from all His work of creation week (Gen. 2:2).

The experience of a glorious morning can hearken us back to that first morning, when everything was still “very good”. Read the lyr-ics below and try to imagine yourself on that first morning, and let it fill you with worship of the one who gave us this wonderous creation; and even gave us dominion over His amazing world.

Morning has broken like the first morning Blackbird has spoken like the first bird Praise for the singing Praise for the morning Praise for them springing fresh from the Word (some versions have “world”)

Imagine that first morning for Adam and Eve, before they fell into sin. There must have been a symphony of praise from the animals to wake them up! I have always enjoyed hearing the songbirds through an open window in the morning. Just a tiny taste of what it must have been like that first morning.

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven Like the first dewfall on the first grass Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

“But a mist went up from the earth and wa-tered the whole face of the ground” Gen 2:6. We do not know if this is how the earth was watered all the way up to the flood. But how-ever the earth was watered before the fall, it was surely gentle and not destructive. Enjoy-ing a gentle rain today, or seeing drops glisten-

ing on the grass is just another taste of the beauty that must have been on that first day.

Mine is the sunlight Mine is the morning Born of the one light Eden saw play Praise with elation, praise ev'ry morning God's recreation of the new day

How often do I wake up in the morning without praise on my lips! May I learn to praise Him every morning with elation at God’s re-creation of the new day!

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man

that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the an-gels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. You have

made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; (Psalm 8:3-6, NKJV)

Humanism as Religion: Testable Hypothesis

By Kevin Hadsall

In Part 1 of the Humanism as Religion debate, I stated the case that the religion of humanism should be subject to the same limitations as other religions if it gets to enjoy the same perks. I pointed out the double standard that we currently experience in our culture: the Bi-ble and its teachings, including biblical crea-tion, are typically banned from public schools…yet, humanist beliefs are given a free pass, and the unverifiable evolutionary worldview is the standard teaching of origins.

Besides JD who posted the original comment, five other humanists joined the discus-sion. In a sense, the entire thread contained multiple debates. For clarity and blog post brevity, I will share this debate in segments that fo-cus on subsets of the com-plete debate thread. By the time I get to Part 6 of 6, I will have shared the entire de-bate transcript, but not in ex-act order.

Part 2 of 6 of the debate below shows the initial discussion between me and humanist BM.

—————————————

BM: Kevin Hadsall Evolution =/= atheism. Atheism simply states that god or supernatural beings do not exist, or at least there is no verifi-able proof either of them or of any interference with the natural world. Evolution is a scientific theory that states that over vast amounts of time, environmental pressure and genetic drift cause changes to the genetic code of a popula-tion resulting in speciation. A scientific theory is the result of decades of research and experi-mentation by hundreds of scientists. All this da-ta, must also be able to be replicated in similar conditions, that means that if a team in Germa-ny comes up with a result, a team in Japan do-ing the same experiment, should yield a similar result. That is why it is taught in public schools. Not a single part of biblical creation myth is fal-sifiable. There is NO TESTABLE HYPOTHE-SIS attached to it. It's just taking a collection of

PAGE 3 ARKY’S NEWS VOLUME 25, #3

stories passed down from a group of barely literate goat herders in the bronze age and saying, "yes, I think this is definitely what hap-pened".

Me: Yes, technically evolution and atheism are two different things, but they are closely relat-ed. Evolution is a foundational belief of athe-ism, since it offers an explanation for the uni-verse apart from God or any supernatural enti-ty. You mention “verifiable proof”…does evolu-tion have “verifiable proof”? If so, can you pro-vide observable, repeatable, and testable ex-amples of the following? (1) Life evolving from non-life, and (2) “upward” changes in the gen-

otype and phenotype of an or-ganism, such as an originally-blind organism evolving eye-sight, or an originally flight-less species developing the ability to fly? Also, your statement is conflating natural selection with evolution, which are two very different things. Natural selection and speciation is the result of genetic loss and re-combination, and is ultimately a “downhill” process over time.

Natural selection is observable, but the “uphill” process of evolution is not observable. You can learn more about that here: https://answersingenesis.org/natural-selection/.

You say that “verifiable proof” is required for the existence of God. The concept of “proof” implies an immaterial concept: true versus false, or truth versus lie. This immaterial con-cept makes sense in a biblical worldview with an all-powerful God who set the laws of the universe (Jeremiah 33:25, Hebrews 1:3). This concept also implies that we are capable of studying the universe, which makes sense if we are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). However, in a materialistic worldview such as the atheistic, evolutionary worldview, how do you account for immaterial concepts such as “truth”? Moreover, if your brain is the byproduct of unguided chemical reactions over millions of years, then how can you ever trust your own empirical observations to ever be ac-curate?

Four Geological Evidences for a Young Earth

BY TIM CLAREY, PH.D. (1st appeared in Acts and Facts, June 2019)

Most people believe rock layers require mil-lions of years to form. This assumption has been taught as fact to geology students and the public for generations. In reality, rocks of any type can and do form quickly under the right conditions.

This article reviews four geological evidences that point to a young world. Collectively, this strong evidence also tips the scale in favor of a 6,000-year-old earth. The scientific data demonstrate that our world’s sedimentary rocks cannot be millions of years old.

1. Erosion Is Too Rapid for an Ancient Earth

What would rocks that are mil-lions of years old look like? Ac-cording to the empirical meas-urements of today’s erosion rates, rocks that are that old shouldn’t even exist if they are exposed at the earth’s surface.

Modern erosion rates are so fast that according to secular geologists the continents them-selves should have been re-duced to sea level long ago. A recent study confirmed that out-crops (rocks visible above ground) erode at an average rate of about 40 feet every one million years. This means the time needed to completely erode most conti-nents would be less than 50 million years.

Secular geologists have had to resort to imag-ined rescuing devices like episodic uplift due to tectonic forces in order to explain the exist-ence of today’s continents. However, much of Canada and the eastern United States have not experienced any significant geologic uplift since the creation of the Appalachian Moun-tains over 250 million years ago, according to the secular timescale. Considering that much of these areas is less than 1,000 feet above sea level, it’s a wonder there’s any dry land at all in these regions.

As secular scientists clearly demonstrated, 1,000 feet of elevation would erode away in just 25 million years. So, if the continents are extremely old, why are they still above sea lev-el? The very existence of Earth’s continents, coupled with erosion rates, testifies to the youth of our planet and the truth of God’s Word.

2. Shale and Limestone Are Deposited Rap-idly by Moving Water

Secular science has long taught that many of Earth’s sedimentary rocks were deposited slowly over vast ages. It says the slow rates of deposition for sediments like clay and lime mud are arguments for an old earth, claiming

these layers form through sediments slowly settling out of stagnant water. People have been indoctrinated with the notion that enormous periods of time are necessary to explain these thick rock layers.

Yes, we do see clay settling out of stagnant water today, but the rocks we observe didn’t form that way. Clay, Earth’s most common sediment, doesn’t slowly settle out of still water to form rocks. Clay-rich rocks like shale and mudstones often exhibit fine laminations or thin-bedded layers that only form through moving, not stagnant, water. How do we know? Recent empirical evidence demon-strates that laminated clays must be deposited in energetic settings by

moving water. Finely laminated clays rarely form today since biological activity (burrowing or bioturbation) usually destroys the thin lay-ers.

The concept of slow-forming limestone strata has been taught as fact for generations. Such carbonate rocks comprise 20 to 25% of the to-tal sedimentary strata on Earth’s continents. The Redwall Limestone in Grand Canyon is 400 to 800 feet thick, but some carbonates can exceed 3,000 feet. Uniformitarians have used the presence of these rocks to criticize the Genesis Flood account, pointing out that thick layers of “quiet water” carbonates must have

If I Perish By Henry M. Morris, PH.D.

“Go, gather together all the Jews that are pre-sent in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and nei-ther eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16)

This is the courageous testimony of Queen Es-ther as she prepared to risk her own life in or-der to save the lives of her people. It was a capital crime for anyone to intrude into the king’s throne room unbidden, but she was will-ing to do so in order to do the will of God, know-ing that “we ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

In the same spirit, Shad-rach, Me-shach, and Abednego were willing to enter the fiery furnace rather than to worship the humanistic gods of Babylon, testifying to Nebuchadnezzar that “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods” (Daniel 3:17-18).

God did deliver Esther and the three Jewish youths, but there have been many through the ages who have died for their faith rather than deny their faith. All the apostles (save John) died as martyrs, for example, and so have countless others throughout the centuries. “They loved not their lives unto the death” (Revelation 12:11) if it meant denying their Sav-ior.

Believers in many nations are suffering such persecutions today, and the time is coming when the last great God-rejecting king of the earth (called the “beast” in Scripture) will “cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed” (Revelation 13:15). If a similar choice confronts us, may God give us the grace to say with Paul that “Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death” (Philippians 1:20), and with Esther: “If

I perish, I perish.” HMM

taken millions of years to form.

But now, all that has changed, and another long-held uniformitarian belief has been ex-posed as a non-truth. Flume studies verified that carbonate mud is not deposited slowly but instead is laid down rapidly by wave and cur-rent action. Laboratory experiments demon-strate that water flowing between 10 and 20 inches per second creates ripples and laminat-ed carbonate mud layers identical to those ob-served in carbonate rocks. Dr. Juergen Schieber and his co-authors wrote:

These experiments demonstrate unequivocally that carbonate muds can also accumulate in energetic set-tings....Observations from modern car-bonate environments and from the rock rec-ord suggest that dep-osition of carbonate muds by currents could have been com-mon throughout geo-logic history.

These results match the predictions of cre-ation geologists, who interpret mudstones, shales, and nearly all sedimentary rocks as rapid deposits from the yearlong Flood.

3. There’s a Lack of Time Between Layers

When we look at the sedimentary rocks and the various megasequences they form, we most commonly see the layers stacked like pan-cakes—each one paralleling the layers below and above. There’s little indication within the sedimentary strata of the vast amounts of miss-ing time claimed by secular geologists. The boundaries between strata often extend for tens and even hundreds of miles in all direc-tions.

Secular scientists often place hundreds of thou-sands or millions of years between parallel sed-imentary units, such as the boundary between the Hermit Shale in Grand Canyon and the

(Geological Evidences - Continued from page 4) overlying Coconino Sandstone. But when you examine the contact between these particular layers, it’s nearly perfectly planar in all direc-tions for tens of miles. There may be small, smooth undulations of a few feet in some lo-cations, but for the most part it’s level with sharp contacts from one rock type to the next. Where are the gullies and the uneven topog-raphy that should have resulted from erosion over hundreds of thousands of years? The contact looks like brick-upon-brick with no evi-dence of any time delay whatsoever across the entire expanse of Grand Canyon and be-yond.

Many other sedimentary units are also sup-posed to have vast amounts of time missing between their boundaries in Grand Canyon and elsewhere. Ex-amples include the base of the Red-wall Limestone where it rests on the Muav Limestone, supposedly miss-ing 160 million years, and the base of the Tapeats Sandstone where it rests on the crystalline basement in western Grand Canyon, supposedly missing one billion years.

The Redwall Limestone and the Tapeats Sandstone were deposited nearly perfectly flat across Grand Canyon. And recall that the Tapeats and equivalent sandstones extend over much of North America. Nearly everywhere across the expanse of North America, the base of the

Tapeats Sandstone layer is a near planar sur-face. How could so much time for erosion to take place have left such flat surfaces? In-stead, the evidence indicates rapid scouring and erosion, creating a planar surface, fol-lowed almost immediately by the deposition of new sedimentary layers as tsunami-like waves advanced across the continents.

4. Cold Subducted Slabs Exist Deep in the Mantle One of the strongest evidences to support catastrophic plate tectonics, runaway subduction, and rapid plate movement during the Flood is the seismic tomography imaging of cold subducted oceanic lithosphere deep in the mantle. Kids Korner Dinosaur Soft Tissue

by Kids Answers of Answers in Genesis

“Then God said, ‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each ac-cording to its kind’; and it was so . . . So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:24, 31)

Most TV programs, movies, and books portray di-nosaurs as having died out 65 million years ago. We know from the history of the Bible that dino-saurs were made on Day Six of the Creation Week about 6,000 years ago. Dinosaurs could not have gone extinct millions of years ago because Earth isn’t that old! Since the Bible is true, we should expect the evidence to support the Bi-ble—and this is exactly what we find. A scientist named Dr. Mary Schweitzer has discovered soft tissue, such as blood vessels, in a T. rex bone! Soft tissue does not last millions of years; it should all have decayed away. But Dr. Schweit-zer found it in a dinosaur bone. Scientists’ belief in evolution and long ages makes them wonder, “How can soft tissue survive for millions of years?” The question they should be asking is, “Are these dinosaur bones really millions of years old?” The answer is no! Dinosaurs are a recent creation, made by God just 6,000 years ago, and most were buried in the Flood just 4,300 years ago.

“Not a single part of biblical creation myth is falsifiable. There is NO TESTABLE HYPOTH-ESIS attached to it. It's just taking a collection of stories passed down from a group of barely literate goat herders in the bronze age and saying, ‘yes, I think this is definitely what hap-pened’”

On the contrary, the Bible claims that God created plants and animals “according to their kind” as stated numerous times in Genesis 1. Although the initial act of creation is not ob-servable, we can observe that animals contin-ue to reproduce according to their “kind” (approximately equivalent to “Family” in our modern classification system). Dogs produce dogs, cats produce cats, and so forth. Howev-er, the evolutionary worldview claims that kinds have evolved into other kinds over mil-lions of years. This has never been observed. Moreover, evolution claims that molecules evolved into Man over the process of millions of years. Nobody has ever observed such a thing, and it’s impossible to observe millions of years of supposed biological evolution any-ways, because nobody has ever lived that long.

—————————————

Can humanists like BM demonstrate that mol-ecules-to-man evolution is an observable sci-ence? No, and the entire debate thread demonstrates the fact that they are relying on faith without evidence. For the Christian, we have faith as well, but it is not a blind faith.

Our observations of the physical world are perfectly consistent with the Word of the Crea-tor and Redeemer. On the contrary, our ob-servations of the physical world are not con-sistent with the evolutionary worldview. In Part 3 of 6 of the debate, humanists JD and PK claim that evolution is a “secure fact” and a “fundamental science.” I will share that tran-script in my next post.
