    THE ARCHIVES

Chapter oneEverything that goes up must come down; everything that has itsgreatest rise in power or influence has its eventual greatest fall. Thesestatements hold true for the turns in the economy, the changes ongovernment, as on the rules of gravity. But I never would haveguessed it would also comprise in values, ethics, and morality. I meanto say, I always knew what the lack of morals meant, but Ive neverknown of an era of standards, order, and rules (imaginerules!) thatguided peoples life everyday, other than reading it in the smolderingremains of history books. That back in the day, - probably a century orso in the past - people had in mind the consequences of nearly everyaction they took, or even that people held respect, love, andconsideration for one another. Now well now, the situation is muchmore dissimilar. Situations can change a lot in the span of a century ortwo.

My story does not begin with me. In fact, what I know is whatothers told me, and what they know is beyond my telling. From I owe

the most are the still working sources left in the world, from thesubjects that believe in hope, order, and in truth; because I assumedthat there was absolutely no point in creating a cause for this world, inview of the fact that you will only be either killed or those that areaiding you will be killed in the making. But when you keep hope in yourheart and mind, everything you do, everything you see, everythingthere is, has a purpose.

You believe you can shift a mountain, if not tear it down. Youbelieve you can withstand the worse of torture, and you can defeat anentire battalion of bandits because of a mere inspiration. With hope,

there is no reason to suffer, to fear. And with hope, there is space forlove and determination.

You see, I wouldnt have believed that, but I learned that, through pain, through pure grueling. Unfortunately, during this timeperiod in mans history, the world does not know a limit to itsproceedings. They drink and eat as if knowing that tomorrow they will

die. They drink and eat as if there is no consequence. As if no one iswatching.

I remembered when the disarray reached its peak back in myprevious homw, in the year 2250; I was only ten. It was never peaceful

then, but when does a story have a happy beginning? (Or a happyending, in that case?). During those occurrences, the road was trailed, the same one that would ultimately have the greatest impact on life, hope, fear, injustice, and order.

The name of the road was The Archives.

And in this all-out war in which the enemy is not identified, I havecaptured all vital records and missions I have myself prepared. You willsee the worst, and perhaps, the truth will finally set you free.

Prepare for a world in which you have led upon:2200

Statistics unmistakably showed the nation of the U.S. the permanentdownfall of ideals and values. Crime rate soared at an unimaginablerate, and every passing year, nations fell, not to an imperialistic one,but to nothing; to its subjects that it was suppose to protect. Soon, thestrongest and only power that the world felt was the United Nations, but even this powerful organization was not to last.

In the year 2212, near the end of society, when the United States

declared itself in a state of emergency, and right after Martial Law wasavowed, the U.S. government secretly began on a project thatpossessed the objective to create an army of genetically superiorsubjects. For the believers in rank, this was the hope to restorestability, and power. In the year 2236, during the research andexperimentation process, corruption and civil uprising took its toll. Theentire west flank of the U.S. fell to its own. Four years after the fall, theproject proved to be a success. Forty thousand were created thruthis procedure. (They were surnamed Tyros, due their extremelylong training process.)

Roughly four years later, the country had contracted to become lessthan that of 1776. Using a small portion of the newly made army, andhaving a firm determination to regain control of the country, theformer president reclaimed only an extremely small part of the countrywith an expensive amount of human life. But soon, the entire worldproved to be against itself. After the failed attempts of reclaiming ofthe country, and after the Tyros were disastrously defeated, theradicals surrounded the capital with the purpose to overthrow the

government, but were killed off. As the morale of the anarchists,radicals,- and even the heedless went up, the only possibilities ofvictory (whatever way it may be in) went down a slippery slopeandled to the defeat of the UN headquarters, defeat for order, and defeatfor mankind.

Thus, in the year 2250, when the Cavaliers sacked the capital, and in the interregnum to steal power took place where the mortalshad already deemed worthless, after everyone met their eventual fateprematurely, and after all reason, all thought process, and alluniformed of society was informally purged, the end of the world finallydisembarked. The world was in utter chaosthe UN was defeatedtheremaining army of the Tyros, being broken as they were, was thinlyspread outand all was finally lost.

You are running. You hear gunshots from the left, from the right, fromyour back, your frontnow you are running in circles, in interlopingovals, with fear holding your at heart as an iron ball chained to theankles of a prisoner. You can feel a cold sack of ice water inside. Theyare everywhere.

A gush of violent, red, orange energy erupts not far from youbutenough to throw you off your feet. You can do nothing, but cover youreyes, and fly with the energy shock. Time has slowed. There is mixtureof confusion in the air: shouts, laughs, pleads gunshots. You cant tellfrom one voice to another.

After the hours dissipate into seconds while you are in the air, you fallonto the windshield of a car; you hear it smash.

You are in pain, in agony, in burns, in trauma.

    You see your past;

    Regret, ardor, hate.

    Love, guilt.

You want to change everything, want to change this world before theend is here. You want to remember how to get out of this problem likeyou had done something wrong when you were in first grade, or whenyou were a reckless teenager acting without thinking anything, butlater being found out. You want to redeem.

But you remember: the end is right in front of you. And now, you havenothing to gain, because you assumed, because you guessed, anddidnt make any effort to know, and didnt even try to improve. Andnow, after so much, after so much, you die and nothing mattersanymorebecause it never did.

CHAPTER 2:Nothing ever comes out as planned. Itinerant activated his SSAC,

and activated his body shield. The energy shield protected him fromany incoming projectile, but only for a limited amount of time before inneed of recharging for six minutes. The technology was improving, butits a slow progression. Especially when it made the difference betweenlife and death.

Itinerant walked quietly, but quickly. The destroyed edifices were

half standing in ruins, very much identical like the uncovered Pompeii,or perhaps more like the smoldering remains of Sodom and Gomorrah. They offered excellent hiding places, but also gave room for an idealambush that could cost ones life with a virtue of temerity. He pickedup three stones, and threw them in the air. As they landedsimultaneously, he unplugged his ears to his extent.

    Clear!

Instantly, he breathed out a relieved exhale, and wiped off hisbeads of sweat from his forehead. His companions Contend, Rachel,

and Render - appeared a few seconds later. Without saying a word, they grouped together and began their way to the Archives, thehighest form of known civilization possible in this century. It was alsothe highest form of safety available.

Suddenly, they heard somethingit was faint, but it was enough. They swiftly ran to an overturned truck for cover, but their position inthe middle of the intersection was their undoing. Itinerant watched hissquads leader, Contend, for orders. Render had his blank face, whileRachel and Itinerant locked gazes.

    You ready? he whispered.

Rachel quickly nodded. It was obvious she was nervous onwhatever outcome, and on whosever sake. Contend nudged his arm.Itinerant quickly caught his motions Contend made with his arm. Signlanguage was priceless in times as these. At once, he knew his orders. While charging his SSAC (Shockwave Simulator Arm Cannon), Contendgave orders to Render and Rachel.

Four seconds later, Contend, Rachel and Render primed to aimand fire. Seconds later, bullets suddenly poured from roofs at such adegree that they seemed to come from heaven itself. There were overtwenty enemy subjects, or so they counted by relying purely on their

    sight and ears.

Now Itinerant! What are you waiting for?! Contend yelled. Its not fully charged! Itinerant replied, struggling to make his voiceheard over the rain of bullets. Just a little more time!

The instant after saying these words, Contends sight caught amovement right behind Itinerants back. He darted his arm towardsItinerant ribs, threw him off balance, and pulled the trigger. The bulletspoured all over the three Cavaliers, which appeared out of the corner

of the buildings in the intersection. In a matter of the opening andclosing of the eyes, they were all to the ground, all opened up from thechest.

Itinerants SSAC finally charged up. He stood up, almost jumpingup in the process. A bullet pierced his helmet, but he was unharmedand unabated. Pulling himself together, he aimed his weapon at thesources of incoming fire. Concentrating, and controlling his heartbeat, the SSAC fired.

The SSAC is a weapon to be reckoned with, a weapon only some

can control efficiently. Visible shock waves of energy discharged fromItinerants arm held machine. The shockwaves demolished one of thesupporting corner bases of the edifice at the speed of sound, and inseconds, it moved downward. There was no surviving that fall. Thebuilding produced a bomb of dust and smoke as it fell, and the threeArchivists were forced to quickly move from their cover.

From a building of their left, Contend received an armorshattering bullet. Rachel and Render rushed in an attempt to coverContend, but the incoming fire was too thick, and doing so would costthem their lives. Itinerant knew his next target. He ran to the building

where the incoming projectiles were coming from, and ably eluded allthe fire aimed on him. Upon nearing the edifice, he focused, jumped, and using all his might, he punched the wall where the buildingdepended most on. As his arm halted midway through the wall, heconcentrated yet again, clearing his mind

Had you been chasing behind Itinerant while the demolition ofthis structure neared, you would have been spellbound, awestricken,

for never had no weapon produced such beauty, while at the sametime, taking away something that can never be brought back, something that can be here only once - life. Itinerants SSAC compliedwith his mindand where his arm was immovable in the wall, shockwaves surged through the entire plane of this side of the wall. They

surged like overlapping circles, taking down layers in an everincreasing amount of length across the wall. Itinerant jumped back, landing six meters in distance back. He then took down the remainingsides of the building, leaving it with no support. The structure fell, andthe shooting stopped simultaneously.

Having neutralized the threats, Rachel and Render ran towardsContend. His eyes were open as they slowly and caringly turned himover.

Contend! Contend! yelled Rachel Are you okay? Talk to me! Dont

    leave us! Please Contend!

Contend never answered back. They had been too late, and now,in just a few minutes not to spare, Contend was killed. Their squadleader. Their tutor. Dead. Another legend to the Archives that will beadded, remembered. Another fallen hero that was taken away for whathe stood for. It was all marked in Rachels memory; it was hardwiredinto Renders mind.

It was a day to be haunted by. Amidst the thick, pale gray dustand the reek of human flesh, Itinerant walked towards the wailing

Rachel. Her cries echoed around Render, Itinerant, and Rachel herself.Out they went, and her cries were carried away from the incomingwind to Itinerants nonentity. To see him killed a few meters from himgave him an inner feeling of either justice or revenge, which at themoment, he couldnt tell. The ardor was growing. He had to focus now.

The Archives was three kilometers commencing where they werecurrently standing at. Itinerant had to focus and push away all sorrow, hate, anger, and all emotion from his heart. Rachel and Render werentgoing to die on his watch. Charging his SSAC, and ordering Rachel andRender to reload, Itinerant proceeded towards the Archives.

The past does not record itself, he thought. The present does. We do.
