Fellow student of knowledge,

When I studied the Arabic language and the Islamic sciences back in the late eighties, I had to leave home and was the only person in my area doing so. What a blessing it is that we can now study the language of the Qur’an on our doorsteps.

It may seem to you a distant dream when you consider the possibility that you might recite the Qur’an and understand it as you recite it. But this is possible and only one year away.

Ebrahim College’s programmes are proven to deliver their outcomes. Our students have studied Arabic and the Islamic Sciences successfully and are now excellent teachers and Imams. Our Arabic intensive students do, in fact, learn Arabic in one year. It is not an exaggeration.

I spend my time studying and teaching Allah’s Deen, it is the greatest privilege that Allah (SWT) could’ve bestowed upon me. No matter what sacrifices you have to make to do this, you will be glad that you also accepted this privilege. When it comes to this path of learning, there is no such thing as the wrong choice; it is always the right choice. Trust in Allah (SWT), focus your intention, and go for it.

What is the Arabic Intensive? What else?

This is an intensive Arabic language programme that covers the Arabic language in all of its facets. It will start you from the very basics of the Arabic language and by the end of the course, you will be able to read, write and understand Arabic, with considerable ability in spoken Arabic.

You will achieve all this without taking a step in an Arab country. If you have the dedication and enthusiasm and put the time and effort in, what seems an impossible dream now will gradually turn into reality sooner than you think: just 1 year full-time and 2 years part-time.

You will study intensive modules in Arabic grammar and literature along with modules dedicated to the language of the Qur’an and hadith, and spoken and written Arabic. In addition to this, three modules are dedicated to Tajweed so that one’s Qur’an recitation, pronunciation and accent are enhanced.

In addition to the Arabic language modules, some modules covering the essentials of Muslim creed as well as the essentials of Islamic Worship are also included.

“Indeed we have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an, in order that you may understand.” (Surah Yusuf, Verse 2)

Introduction to Arabic

Your journey begins with this module wherein you develop the ability to write the Arabic letters, and compose Arabic words and sentences together. You will also develop the ability to pronounce the Arabic alphabet as well as to read basic words and sentences. This will enable you to proceed successfully to the subsequent modules that require one to be able to read and write.

Arabic Grammar – al-Nahw

Al-Nahw (Syntax) is the study of how words come together to form sentences and how the various cases of words impact upon the vowels of the ends of words. This is critical to one’s ability to read and understand text accurately. The subject is taught over three modules: 2 in English and the final one in Arabic.

Details of individual subjects and modules

Arabic Grammar – al-Sarf

Al-Sarf (Morphology) is the study of word forms with particular emphasis on verbs. It is an extremely vital subject that develops the ability to correctly identify and understand words. This is also taught over 3 modules with the final one taught in Arabic from Arabic texts on the subject.

Arabic Literature

There are two Arabic literature modules covering various genres of Arabic prose.

Language of the Qur’an and Sunnah

These are two modules focussing on the classical language and vocabulary of the Qur’an with selected verses and surahs of the Qur’an covered and a selection of hadith studied and analysed linguistically.

Introduction to spoken Arabic; and writing, comprehension and Speech

The Introduction to spoken Arabic is your first exposure to basic themes of spoken Arabic to develop your ability to say basic phrases and comprehend spoken Arabic. This is followed by two more modules taught in Arabic covering a wide range of vocabulary to develop your speaking, writing and listening skills. By the end of these modules students can participate in lectures in Arabic and write short literary pieces.

Tajweed

Tajweed is the art in which one learns how to recite the Holy Qur`an as it was revealed to the Prophet (SAW). When Angel Jibrail (AS) recited the words of Allah (SWT) to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) he recited them in a certain way and he showed the Prophet (SAW) the ways in which it was permissible to recite the Qur`an. So it is upon us to observe those rules so that we recite it in the way it was revealed.

Students studying the Tajweed course will practice recitation of the Holy Qur`an with correct pronunciations under a qualified teacher

Essentials and Fiqh of Worship

In this course you will be taken through the absolute essentials of worship such as purification and prayer by an expert teacher so that you can be sure of the validity of your worship. You will initially be introduced to the subject in English focussing on practical application followed by a more technical study of the rules in Arabic in the third term.

The Muslim’s Creed

This course is extremely important for every Muslim. It covers the basic articles of Iman that are essential to one’s faith as emphasised by the Prophet (SAW) in the hadith of Jibrail: namely, belief in Allah (SWT), His angels, books, messengers, the last day and destiny. Students will learn about the importance of correct beliefs and how the ulama developed this into a subject of study to preserve the correct beliefs of Islam.

Page 15: THE ARABIC INTENSIVE PROGRAMME - Ebrahim Collegeebrahimcollege.org.uk/ArabicIntensiveBrochure.pdf · What is the Arabic Intensive? ... language of the Qur’an and hadith, and spoken

The course briefly deals with sects, classical and contemporary differences of opinion without being polemical, but rather with a view to giving the student a perspective that will enable one to remain strong on faith and avoid getting sucked in to debates and polemics.

A student of knowledge must have firm knowledge of the fundamentals of Islam, before one can pursue a path to master Arabic language and delve into other detailed issues. Our belief is a critical support upon which our deen stands upright. It is firm belief that everything else develops and grows from.

The Arabic Intensive - 15

Imam Ash-Shafi’i said: ‘The language which Allah (SWT) favoured was the Arabic language as He revealed His Noble Book in this (Arabic) and He made this the language of the seal of the prophets - Muhammad (SAW). And that is why we say that it is befitting for everyone who has the ability to learn Arabic – that they learn it, as it is the best language.’

Where does this lead to?Anyone who successfully completes the Arabic Intensive course joins a very rare and unique group of people who meet the prerequisites to study the Alimiyyah programme. The Alimiyyah programme is an opportunity to delve deeper into the different Islamic sciences. These subjects include Tafsir, Fiqh, Hadith, Ulumul Hadith, Usulul Fiqh, History etc. The Arabic language is a tool that allows the student to fully access the Qur’an and Sunnah and venture into the treasures of the Islamic Sciences from the works of classical and contemporary scholars.

In any case, the Arabic Intensive opens up the doors to further Islamic studies in the UK and abroad and as a bare minimum will enable you to never have to recite the Qur’an without understanding it.

If you are interested in qualifications, this course covers the content of an Arabic GCSE. One more year of study and students can sit an A level in Arabic which covers at least two years of a Degree in Arabic.

“After completing an intensive year in the Arabic course, my understanding and reading of the Arabic language has reached an unexpected level. From the start of this academic year in the Alimiyyah, I’ve began tasting the sweetness of gaining knowledge and the buzz is certainly thrilling and exciting.”

Anwar Hussain, Arabic Intensive 2011-2012

The Arabic Intensive - 17

“I initially started studying at Ebrahim College on a part time basis. As such, I was very worried about jumping onto the full time Alimiyyah, however the teachers have been very supportive, and I, by the grace of Allah (SWT) and the efforts of my teachers, have managed to benefit greatly both in terms of Islamic education as well as in terms of addressing my spiritual development. I genuinely feel that Ebrahim College has been one of the most major factors in shaping my future and I pray Allah (SWT) blesses the College.”

Life at Ebrahim College:

Ebrahim College is an institute of learning that is dedicated to Islamic Studies and providing a comprehensive service to the community. Thus a student that enrols here benefits from access to the many services and activities that exist at such an institution. Some are mentioned below:

Pastoral Tutorials: Along with providing you with the best possible classroom experience, your personal and spiritual development is also important to us so that every student becomes and remains a person of integrity, piety and responsibility. A specific weekly tutorial with a tutor provides a platform for regular naseeha (counsel) and the opportunity to discuss any issues that students may have with their studies or their lives in general. Furthermore, the tutor remains the first contact for a student’s pastoral needs.

Every student at EC remains immersed in an environment where traditionally trained scholars of different specialities and interests are always around. They teach various subjects, run study circles and organise and encourage extracurricular activities that students will be able to benefit from. Lifelong connections are formed and many of our students maintain a close relationship with their teachers, as per tradition, even after they have completed their studies.

In addition, some of the best scholars in the world and dignitaries from the Islamic world are regular visitors to EC. While people in the community have limited access to these luminaries, EC students are privileged with spending time with them and benefiting from them.

Constant Company of Scholars:

Page 19: THE ARABIC INTENSIVE PROGRAMME - Ebrahim Collegeebrahimcollege.org.uk/ArabicIntensiveBrochure.pdf · What is the Arabic Intensive? ... language of the Qur’an and hadith, and spoken

Leadership and Community Development:

Your teachers are more than just teachers; they are community leaders in their own right and are pivotal to their communities. You are also an integral part of your community as well as a torchbearer of knowledge. EC is dedicated to developing leaders of the future and inspiring dedication to the community in every student. If you have such aspirations, EC is just the right place where you will find the relevant academic, spiritual as well as vocational nourishment.

This is specifically catered for by encouraging students to participate in extracurricular activities and volunteering. Our weekly open-to-the-public study circle called ‘The Seeker’s Station’, is organised by the students. Many students are given the opportunity to get involved in our children’s supplementary schools as teaching assistants, and given support to setup community initiatives in their localities. In addition there are opportunities to get involved in mentoring, fundraising, trips to umrah and retreats, events organising, da’wah and community activism.

Ebrahim College Facilities

EC’s facilities are dedicated and tailored to its students with private areas for women, dedicated study spaces, a library and prayer area, and constant access to the facilities and study spaces throughout the day.

This course is open for men and women who are enthusiastic about learning the Arabic language.

Applicants must have a good functional command of the English language. As a basic minimum, students must be passionate and enthusiastic about studying the Arabic language. Having something that motivates you is essential.

One must remember that the course is intensive, so you should be wary of the fact that it will take up a lot of your time and will require serious dedication. You will need drive and desire to get through the course and learn a language in what is a very short period of time.

The course is suitable for students who are 16 years of age and above and is ideal for secondary school leavers. If you are applying as a school leaver and are also interested in the Alimiyyah Programme, you will also complete 2-3 A levels.

The course is also perfect for anyone who intends to take a gap year from studies or a career break.

If you are in full-time studies or work you can apply to study part-time during evenings and weekends. You will complete the Intensive over two years without having to give anything up.

The course is also a pre-requisite for students who are intending to undertake the Alimiyyah Programme so they will have to study the Intensive before admission on the Alimiyyah.

2 This makes it suitable to mothers who have children at school but one will have to discuss this in the interview.

Ebrahim College is a registered charity and as part of its vision and mission, it endeavours to provide its services at an affordable price or where possible for free. The College does not seek to make a profit but to cover the costs incurred in delivering its courses and services, and in sustaining quality and growth.

Many of the courses are heavily subsidised and the actual fees charged are not reflective of the total costs. This is done so that all of the courses and programmes at the College remain affordable.

The actual cost of the full-time programme is currently around £5000.00 per year. Khalil Foundation (parent organisation of Ebrahim College) subsidises a substantial portion of that from its general fundraising and charitable activities and the students pay the remainder as a top-up fee. Students who can afford to pay the full fees are always encouraged to do so.

Financial Support for Students

Mus’ab Ibn ‘Umayr Scholarship Fund

This is a general scholarship and hardship fund for students unable to afford the top-up fees. Every year there is a limited fund from which specific amounts are granted. The College will do its utmost to not discriminate or exclude dedicated and hardworking students if they are genuinely unable to pay. However, it will not be possible to meet every need fully as the College simply does not have the capacity to do that. Applicants for the Arabic Intensive may apply for financial help from this fund. Please read the scholarships section on our website for full details.

Loans

Some discounts may apply for early and advance payment of fees. Please enquire for details.

Qardh Hasan (interest free) loans may be awarded to students who were unsuccessful in securing a scholarship award. We encourage students to apply very early to increase the chances of a successful scholarship award.

Furthermore, the possibility of any further scholarship grants for future studies will be affected by your performance and dedication in your current studies.

You will be required to sign a learning agreement that will incorporate these terms.

“The learning begins from day one, a continuous daily routine which will inshaAllah lead you to interpreting the sacred words of your Creator. The words that you have been reiterating since your childhood but unable to comprehend are suddenly brought to life by meaning through your dedication, determination and sacrifice, made possible by the mercy of Allah (SWT) and the ongoing support of all the teachers”.

Umm Yusuf, Arabic Intensive, 2012

“Attending Ebrahim College has been an amazing way to enhance my knowledge of the Arabic language and perfecting the methods of reading the Holy Qur’an. It is an honour to be here, learning things that will shape our future and pave our way to Jannah, inshaAllah. This has to be one of the greatest decisions of my life and without a doubt; it’s a privilege to be here”.

Fatima Najam, Arabic Intensive 2012

“I believe that what Ebrahim College is doing is amazing. The fact that they approach teaching so differently to madrassahs around the UK, makes it a much more beneficial experience. The approach that they take differently is that they don’t just teach Arabic, Qur’an and Hadith, but they help mould students into scholars that can actually have an impact on society in general, using relevant knowledge of Islam. I think the environment is good and it helps correct our manners, character and Iman”.

Salman Ahmed, Arabic Intensive Full Time 2012
