SHADWELL SPONSORS UKARABIAN DERBY FOR THE FIRSTTIME

For the first time in its history; the Gr.1 PAUK Arabian Derby (IFAHR) will besponsored by Shadwell Stud when it is runas part of a Shadwell sponsored card ofThoroughbred Racing on Friday 25thSeptember 2015 at Newmarket's RowleyMile Racecourse.

Re-branded, the Shadwell Arabian Derby(Gr.1 PA) will be the first race on the 8race card which also includes 2 Gr.2 racesand 3 Listed contests for Thoroughbreds.

Shadwell Stud Director, Richard Lancasterexplained the reasoning behind theaddition of this feature Arabian race to thewell established Shadwell Day format:

"Shadwell has supported racing atNewmarket through sponsorship for manyyears. In the past our fixtures haveshowcased the very top level ofThoroughbred racing with feature racessuch as the Middle Park Stakes (Gr.1) anduntil recently the Fillies Mile (Gr.1).

As many in the Arabian racing communitywill know, Sheikh Hamdan offered hissupport to the Arabian RacingOrganisation (ARO) at the start of 2015when the sport was in considerable needof a major investment in order to operatethe current fixture list.

One of the races needing investment wasthe UK Arabian Derby; it seemedappropriate that Sheikh Hamdan, aspatron of ARO and the most successful

owner ever of Arabian racehorses in theUK should add the race to his featureThoroughbred fixture of the year.

We hope that the addition of the ShadwellArabian Derby to a prestigiousThoroughbred card will help showcase thesport and its participants to a wideraudience, a major focal point of SheikhHamdans involvement in the sport."

Despite being run at different tracks overthe years, the UKs Arabian Derby hasalways attracted top quality horses.

Recent winners include top fillies KISS DEGHAZAL and MKEEFA, the latter going onto win the Arabian World Cup (Gr.1 PA) atLongchamp and ending the season as thehighest rated horse in the world that year.

DJET TAOUY won the race in 2013 as anoutsider, beating an incredibly strong fieldincluding the Qatari owned MUNTASAR,Sheikh Hamdan's SIVIT AL MAURY andfuture Arabian World Cup (Gr.1 PA) anddual Hatta International (Gr.1 PA) winnerDJAINKA DES FORGES. DJET TAOUYconfirmed this was no fluke by cementinghis Gr.1 PA status by taking the ShadwellDubai International, the feature race at theDubai International Arabian Races thefollowing year.

Last year's race saw the UK Arabian Derbyrun at Newmarket's Rowley Mile for thefirst time and a rare UK runner forMonsieur Jean Pierre Totain and HHSheikh Mansoor take the honours. In athrilling battle to the line, NAHEE got thebetter of the gallant filly NAJLAA, alsotrained in France by M. Damien deWatrigant for HH Sheikh Hamdan binRashid Al Maktoum and the Qatari bredMAJD AL URAIQ for Mr Hassan Al Matwi.

Genny Haynes, Director of the ArabianRacing Organisation vocalised theappreciation of the Arabian racingcommunity:

ARO is delighted that HH Sheikh Hamdanbin Rashid Al Maktoum extended hissupport for Arabian racing not only here inthe UK but worldwide in 2015.

With this continued support and additionalsponsorship in the UK, it is with greatpleasure and excitement that this

prestigious Arabian race (the ShadwellArabian Derby) will now be included in therace programme at Newmarket. This willcertainly be another highlight in ourArabian race calendar for 2015 and it isappropriate that an international race ofthis calibre carries the name of Shadwellunder the Patronage of HH SheikhHamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. AROwould like to express their thanks to HisHighness for his continued support ofARO and Arabian racing and for giving thesport a further opportunity to showcaseitself at a high quality Thoroughbredfixture.

EARLY CLOSING ENTRIESRELEASED FOR THE SHADWELLUK DERBY GROUP 1 PA

The first round of entries has beenpublished for the UK Arabian Derby, running for the first time with sponsorshipfrom Shadwell Stud. The Gr.1 contest for4 year old purebred Arabians will kick offthe prestigious Shadwell sponsoredraceday at Newmarkets Rowley MileRacecourse on Friday 25th September, which also features two Gr.2 races andthree Listed contests for Thoroughbreds.

The race has always attracted top classArabian horses and this years entrantsmaintain that high standard.

ARO Patron HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin RashidAl Maktoum is well represented byChampion trainer Gill Duffield. She hasentered six horses, but the two real eyecatchers are BON BAISER DE FAUST andAGHSAAN. The former is a smart Frenchbred colt who was second on his mostrecent start, in the Emirates NBDInternational Stakes at the DubaiInternational Arabian Races at Newburylast month, finishing only a couple oflengths behind the top class VULCAIN DUCLOS. The other Duffield selection was awinner that day; AGHSAAN looks to be avery promising filly. She won the openingPremier Handicap at Newbury but isclearly capable of a step up to Grouplevel.

Qatari owned horses have a good recordin this race and both the Al Shaqab and AlShahania stables are represented here. ALMOUWAFFAK is trained by up and comingFrench trainer Thomas Fourcy for AlShaqab. The stable is having incrediblesuccess with purebred Arabians both

home and abroad this year. This horse wasunbeaten as a three year old and, as such, was classified to be the best of hisgeneration by the International PatternRace and Handicappers committee at theend of 2014. His unbeaten run was haltedwhen running against older horses thisyear but he was second on his most recentstart, in the Gr.1 Prix Manganate inDeaville, finishing close behind stablemateAl Mourtajez; arguably one of the besthorses in the world.

Julian Smart enjoyed a successful day atNewbury at the Dubai InternationalArabian Races, including a win in thefeature race of the day, the ShadwellDubai International (Gr.1 PA) withGAZWAN who is among the ShadwellArabian Derby entries. Stablemate BASIL(also entered) tasted Group success whentaking the Gr.2 Royal Cavalry of OmanClarendon International over 5f atNewbury a couple of weeks ago. This raceis double the distance but it proves theversatility of the Arabian breed that ahorse can compete at the highest levelover such a variety of distances.

Although trained in France by ThomasFourcy, MAHESS DU SOLEIL was bred inthe UK by ARO Owners Mr and Mrs JKippen. The horse runs in their daughter,Lisa Deymonazs colours. She finishedthird on her last start, a Gr.3 at La Teste, behind SYLVINE AL MAURY andstablemate AL MOUWAFFAK. She isentitled to improve for that effort so couldwell go closer here.

New purebred Arabian trainer StephaneLeveque is based in Newmarket so, likeGill Duffield, will have a home advantagein this race. He is represented by thelightly raced STORM TROUPOUR, anAmerican bred colt owned by the head ofthe Arabian Jockey Club of America, MrsKathy Smoke. He finished strongly behindfellow US horse KATONAHOTINROOFMHF on his racecourse debut over a mileso these extra two furlongs should be inhis favour.

ARO Racing Manager, Amanda Smithcommented: I am delighted with thestrength of these early entries. With the300 travel concession for overseasrunners, I wouldnt be at all surprised tosee more foreign horses enter at thesupplementary stage (16th September)but the quality of the first round of entriesis excellent. It is certainly a testament toHH Sheikh Hamdans sponsorship that thisrace has attracted such top level PurebredArabian Horses.

HH Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's AlHibaab is bidding for back to back wins inthe IFAHR Trophy over 2100m on thesynthetic surface, having been successfulin last year's contest.

Shadwell Stud Director Richard Lancastercommented. "Obviously, his run in theShadwell Dubai International Stakes wasvery disappointing considering how easilyhe won the preparation race.

The exhibition previewed as part of DIARon 26 July at Newbury racecourse and thentransferred straight to the NHRM onNewmarkets High Street, where it willremain until October. It will coincide withtwo important Arabian racing events to beheld nearby the Arabian RacingOrganisation Season Finale at Huntingdonon 20 September and the UK ArabianDerby (Group 1 PA) to be held atNewmarket five days later, both sponsoredby Shadwell Stud.

Work on show includes a selection of oilpaintings by Lisa Miller, winner of theprestigious Denford Stud sponsored Bestin Show award at last years Society ofEquestrian Artists annual exhibition inLondon. Miller explained how she becameinspired by the sport. "Having previouslylived in Newbury for a year, I attended myfirst Dubai Day back in 2002. I've lovedthoroughbred racing all my life but wasvery impressed with the day and howgorgeous the Arabian horses were.

THE ARTOF ARABIAN RACINGFollowing on from the successful exhibitions at Dubai International Arabian Races (DIAR) last

year and also at the National Horse Racing Museum (NHRM) in 2013, the Society ofEquestrian Artists (SEA) have produced another selection of Arabian racing themed work

which will be shown at both venues this summer and autumn.

Wemoved toWales shortly afterwards soI didnt attend another meeting until 2009when Ffos Las staged its one and onlyArabian meeting when the course firstopened. I made a point of going and it wasa thoroughly enjoyable day. I took lots ofphotographs, but didnt use them until theSEA, through the efforts of ourChairwoman, ran a competition inpartnership with the Arabian RacingOrganisation. I produced several paintingsfrom those photographs and was luckyenough to win. This took me to Newmarketfor the President of the UAE Cup and Ihave tried to attend as many of theHereford meetings as I could since, as wellas the last two Dubai Days at Newbury.

I doubt Id still be painting if I hadntdecided to enter that initial competition soI have a lot to thank it for! Ive met somelovely people and sold some work, which isa bonus. Im also honoured to have hadmy paintings grace the cover of the DIARracecard for the past three years.

Racing is my one big passion andinspiration, and at one time I was obsessedwith bloodlines and breeding. Already Ican feel a need to knowmore aboutArabian bloodlines but my knowledge isvery poor! As a sport I find it easily on apar with thoroughbred racing and just asexciting. Horse racing has always inspiredme and subjects from the sport form thebulk of my painting output. There issomething very special about Arabianhorses, the fluid way in which they move, their (sometimes) fiery temperament that isvery attractive - it cries out to be painted!Theyre also very good at striking anextremely noble pose when the camera isout!

When asked about her thoughts on DIARand her visits to Hereford she said. Seeingthe horses and meeting the people who areinvolved in the sport and the generalrelaxed atmosphere on what is a big day inthe Arabian racing calendar is what Ienjoy. There seems to be a lot ofcamaraderie and friendliness - far morelike National Hunt racing than the Flat!

Mary Herberts expert pencil and pastelskills drewmany admirers last year andshe submitted a variety of studies in thesemediums. She is very enthusiastic aboutthis new subject as she had littleexperience of racing until she becameinvolved with that initial art competition. She explains I also first heard about thesport through the SEA. It appears veryfriendly, obviously it's competitive butthere's more camaraderie than manyequine sports. Also horses seem to haveconsiderably longer careers than inmainstream racing which suggests theirneeds as animals (as opposed tocommodities) are held in high regard. When I went racing, I was made to feelvery welcome by the participants and theARO organisers.

Since that initial competition, Arabianracing has brought me new opportunitiesto exhibit, at Dubai Day & the NHRM, andit has brought me into contact with newclients for my artwork.

Summing up she said Arabian horses are

well known for their beauty, spirit andgrace. What more could an artist wishfor?

Rising star Michelle McCullagh is one ofthe youngest ever Full Members of theSEA. Her work is highly sought after andher exhibits will whet the viewers appetitefor her major solo show in London thisNovember. She said, My first experienceof Arabian Racing was when I was verykindly invited to Arabian racing atSalisbury by Society ChairwomanDeborah Burt who was sponsoring a raceon the day. It was a fantastic day and I tookthe opportunity to sketch this new subject.

I often go racing to gather material for myoil paintings and I thoroughly enjoyed thechallenge of drawing the flighty, light-footed Arabians who make their jockeyslook larger on their backs. Their shortbacks and necks, large heads and flowingtails aren't stereotypical to every racingArabian, but I found they certainly had adifferent presence to them compared tothat of the Thoroughbred. From an artistspoint of view, I also enjoy seeing morevariety in colours, with more greys in thefield than with Thoroughbreds.

The Dubai Day exhibition presented anexcellent celebration of the breed and Iwas delighted to be able to exhibit apainting and some drawings there. It wasfantastic exposure for me and great to havea new angle on 'racing'. A lot of mypaintings are about movement, so to lookat a different length of stride andconformation in movement is very useful.

As part of the DIAR exhibition atNewbury, there was also a Young PersonsArt Workshop hosted by ElizabethArmstrong. She is a familiar sight on manyracecourses throughout the UK with hervibrant and expressive paintings, drawingsand prints.

TheWorkshop was a huge success and willbe repeated at Huntingdon in September,Armstong was delighted with the responseand said. Children love animals, especially horses! Theyre exciting and runfast, so children can run wild with theirimagination on this subject as it hasendless possibilities! For me as an artist,Arabian racing is very vibrant, the silks, coloured bridles, saddle cloths and thewonderful shape of the silky Arabianracehorses are all very exciting.

I heard about Dubai Day through goingracing and talk within the industry. It is afantastic day out for all the family with lotsof prize money for the horses and greatprizes for the racegoer too!

SEA Chairwoman, Deborah Burt who hasbeen sponsoring Arabian races since 2012,and who sculpts her own race trophy, said."As soon as I became involved withArabian racing I realised the potential forSEA artists to expand their subject matterwith this exciting sport. The exhibition onDubai Day, plus the addition of theChildren's Workshops, helps both theartists and Arabian racing reach newaudiences in an original way. I hope we cancontinue our involvement in the future."

Even the rain could not diminish theimportance of the 32ndDubai InternationalArabian Race (DIAR) meeting to theknowledgeable crowd of seasonedArabian racegoers or the excitement ofthe top class action for those experiencingArabian racing for the first time. Thehighlights of the day, the three Group 1PA races, all lived up to expectations,

confirming established champions andheralding a new one.

After such an excellent summer it was ofcourse disappointing that DIAR should, yetagain, be plagued by poor weather andrun on an easy surface, though despitethis, the crowd showed a 20 per centincrease on the previous year.

The Emirates Premier Handicap Stakesover a mile went to AGHSAAN, which gotDIAR patron, HH Sheikh Hamdan binRashid Al Maktoum off to a flying startwith a homebred winner. The Gill Duffieldtrained filly was prominent from the off, incompany with Man Of Dreams, SpiritedGame, Shadiya and recent course anddistance winner, Katonahotinroof MHF.

Racing down the centre of the course,Aghsaan went clear just after the halfwaypoint and produced an emphatic fourlength victory under His Highnesssretained jockey Paul Hannagan. Karar whohas shown signs of ability, raced handilyjust off the pace and just snatched secondfrom Katonahotinroof MHF.

A scopey filly, Aghsaan is clearly going theright way and should progress nextseason, as her dams wins were overfurther including the Dubai InternationalStakes. It was also special for His Highness

This winning formula was repeated in thesecond, the 7 furlong Group 2 EmiratesEquestrian Federation InternationalStakes to give His Highness and trainerGill Duffield a double for the day. The onlyfilly in the line up Selketh, went off infront, showing a very professional attitudeon only her second start. Cheik Roque, winner of the corresponding DIAR preprace and in line for a bonus should he havewon, settled in behind with RASAASYnearest the far side rail.

With a quarter of a mile left to run,Rasaasy moved to challenge Selkeths leadand it was obvious that Cheik Roque wasbeaten. However the filly kept with himand the pair drew clear, Rasaasy finallygetting on top at the finish to win by half alength, with Cheik Roque two and a halflengths away in third. Both horses lookcapable of further progression and thiswas a notable one-two for their sire,Munjiz. Rasaasy brought further joy for HH

Vulcain Du Clos (FR) leads them home under a well timed ride by Olivier Peslier

    18

The Emirates NBD International Stakesthat followed was a mile and a quarterconditions event attracting a number ofquality performers who had just missedout in Group company. They were headedin the market and in the card by VULCAINDU CLOS, trained in France by CharlesGourdain for the Royal Cavalry of Oman.Well travelled, he had won a Listedcontest in Belgium and was placed secondin a Group 1 in Turkey last term, mostrecently he had been runner up in a Listedrace in Holland.

Of the others, Rasi, a full brother to AlMajhHoor, had looked progressive inDoha over the winter and was the firstArabian UK runner for Qatari top trainerJassim Al Ghazali. Whilst Najlaa had wonover a similar trip in France and beensecond in a Group 1 on her sole UK start

last year, she had failed to get her head infront this season.

Bon Baiser De Faust on the other hand, had struck form since arriving in the UKthis spring, with back to back wins inlesser company, he still looked on theupgrade. Paul Hanagan was positive onhim from the outset, brushing asideAurora Fortas challenge in the homestraight, it looked as if HH Sheikh Hamdanwould rattle up a hat-trick of winners. Rasithreatened and led for a few strides, butthough Vulcain Du Clos had to defy apenalty, Olivier Peslier gave a masterfulperformance on the Royal Cavalry ofOmans runner, not producing him untilthe final half furlong. He was pushed outfor a two and a half length win, with BonBaiser De Faust just getting the better ofRasi for the places.

There was further joy for the Royal Cavalryof Oman in the first of the Group 1 events, the six furlong Jebel Ali RacecourseZaAbeel International Stakes. ALMOUHANNAD was on course to record ahat-trick in this contest. She faced thegreatest challenge from the two otherFrench trained runners in Ghazwa andMeeyur. She had been fourth to Ghazwa ina Group 3 sprint in October and second toMeeyur in a Group 3 in May, howeverfaced both at level weights here.

Paul Hanagan and Radames sporting firsttime blinkers looked determined to makeit a thorough test on the easy surface.Radames wasnt headed until the final halffurlong, when Al Mouhannad confirmedher dominance in a matter of strides, winning in style from Meeyur and Ghazwa.Another horse who requires holding up,her trainer hopes she will return next yearto attempt a record fourth win.

Brigadier Abdulrazak Al Shahwarzi of theRoyal Cavalry of Oman was delighted withthe mares performance. She is achampion now, to win the same race threetimes in a row. We try not to race ourhorses too often and thats why she gaveus a good result today.

The Group 1 Hatta International Stakeshad a new sponsor in Dubai Duty Free andthey could not have wished for a betterstart than to have the 2014 Worlds jointTop Rated Arabian racehorse, DJAINKADES FORGES in the line up. Not only clearon ratings, she was bidding for back toback wins. The biggest danger was Loraa, also a multiple Group winner, she hadtaken the fillies Group 1 contest atLongchamp last October and won a Group2 on her latest outing.

Tawaazun had bounced back to formfollowing a lay off in impressive style whenwinning the Hatta prep race over courseand distance. Lightly raced, she wasentitled to further improvement, however

this was her first outing in Groupcompany. Hurra was also one to note, having been beaten a length into third in aGroup 3 in Holland by Lahoob on herlatest start.

LB Farrah cut out the early running, however she was a long way behind theprincipals on ratings and it was no surpriseto see her fade over three furlongs out. This left Djainka Des Forges in the leadand Harry Bentley only had to shake thereins for HH Sheikh Mohammed binKhalifa Al Thanis mare to assert hersuperiority. They crossed the line two anda half lengths clear of Loraa and a fastfinishing Hurra, who was only a headbehind in third.

Trainer Julian Smart had little time toenjoy the celebrations as he had GAZWANin the feature event of the day, the Group1 Shadwell Dubai International Stakesover the same trip of a mile and a quarter. The quality field included the last twowinners in Djet Taouy and Al Hibaab, plusLahoob who had started his season with aGroup 1 win. Handassa, who had pickedup a Listed win in Holland on his mostrecent effort, made up the five runnercontest following the withdrawal of Furry.

Lahoob, drawn widest of all, made hismove for the rail, leading Handassa and AlHibaab, who both looked a bit free in theearly stages; Gazwan settled nicely, alsoon the rail, with Djet Taouy the backmarker. Lahoob set a workmanlike pace infront and the field again chose the centreof the track to race down, once they hadentered the straight. However not for the

first time in his career, Lahoob drifted offline, taking them over to the stands rail.

As the tempo increased Djet Taouy took itup, trying to assert, and it looked for a fewstrides as if he would become the firsthorse since Al Sakbe to regain his crown. However, as Gazwan laid down hischallenge, Djet Taouy hung away from thewhip, gifting the lead to Bentleys charge, who with ears pricked, scored by half alength.

This was a game performance by Gazwan,he had been beaten in the French Derbyat Chantilly on his latest start, but hadclearly improved since. From an excellentfamily, he is a full brother to the stablesRathowan, who had been runner-up toDjet Taouy in this two years previously.

Speaking at the end of the day Smartexplained his shortfall in runners.Unfortunately because of theintroduction of the first leg of the DohaTriple Crown at Goodwood, my runnerswere greatly reduced. Basically itsbecause the races are six days apart, which I think as far as planning goes, is notvery helpful for Arab racing at all. Whenyouve got the biggest Arabian racing dayin the UK Dubai Day - six days before therichest race now in Europe, bar theArabian World Cup, and then, two weekslater youve got two very big races inDeauville its just silly. I think that itshigh time that people got together as onefor Arabian racing and stopped doingthings like this.

But I had three runners and threewinners, so I cant ask for a better day atthe office. It was unexpected to be honest,as I wasnt quite sure where we werefitness wise, being in a different yard, withdifferent gallops this year, but obviouslythey were pretty spot on [in previous years

Smart was based in Lambourn using the fullrange of Jockey Club Estate Gallops, where as Whatcombe is a private trainingfacility].

Regarding the going he said. To beperfectly honest that little bit of cut in theground, I think that helped every one ofmy runners. I knew it wouldnt be aproblem for Djainka because she thriveson it. I think its finally dawned on us allthat she is a European filly - its as simpleas that. She loves a bit of cut and you sawthe way she won, it was emphatic. Harrywas easing down, well before the line. Itwas impressive because I thought therewere a couple of good fillies in the race, soshes on track for France anyway.

When told Bentley had said hed pickDjainka Des Forges over Gazwan for theQatar Arabian World Cup at LongchampSmart responded. I dont think it is a hardchoice, if I was Harry Id pick Djainka aswell. Gazwan is only four."

"Hes very, very inexperienced. He ranonce at Newbury last year, got a problem- which we sorted thankfully, with the helpof Valley Equine Hospital in Lambourn.Got him back to Doha, then we took ourtime with him. He won three on thebounce there, came over to England, wentto France to the Prix Dianne meeting andfinished a good third in the Qatar ArabianDerby behind Mister Ginoux who is asuper horse."

So thats only five runs and the DubaiInternational was the sixth run of hiscareer. Hes stepped up against olderhorses like Djet Taouy, Al Hibaab - bothformer winners over a mile and aquarter in a Group 1, so you couldnt askfor any more. Hes still young andimproving massively, but I think hes anext year horse if you know what I mean, though I will run him in France anyway.

"He wont go to Newmarket [for theShadwell UK Arabian Derby], because thestring I brought over this year were horsesthat I was looking at for the French race. But nothing has really stepped up, so itwill be Djainka and Gazwan right now. Theway Abhar ran when winning the stayersrace, well hes a monkey and you cant hitthe front too soon with him.

Djainka's win was emphatic and verypleasing after her disappointments in theEmirs Sword and the Kahayla Classic onWorld Cup night. Shes bounced back andshown shes not a four-time Group 1winner for nothing. Shes got to be thebest mare in training at the moment, sowe will go to France with those three, Illjust have to hope for some rain and a bitof cut in the ground. Well give it a goodgo anyway.

Having won this race by two lengths lastyear, Al Mourtajez was strongly fancied tomaintainhis unbeaten record at Grouplevel. However it was not a formality forthe son of Dahess as his biggest challengecame from his stablemate, Al Mouwaffakwho had disappointed in two starts sincewinning the Gr 2 Prix Carthage- HannibalHH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al NahyanCup on his seasonal reappearance inApril.

little horse with a big heart and I'm happyfor his sire Azadi . We will reconsider theprogram for Al Mouwaffak.

Whilst both the winner and runner-upwere trained by Thomas Fourcy for AlShaqab, it was also a dual success forHassan Mousli, Nada Mousalli and Faiz AlElweet who bred them. Their stud issituated between Saintes and Rochefortand are responsible for producing AlSakbe, Al Saoudi, Al Mouhannad, AlMoutawakel, Al Mouwaffak, SaklawiJadrane, Al Nachmiya, Al Jalfane, AlMoutawakila, Al Mourtazez, Al Sabeq.

In an interview with The French Purebred

Arabian magazine earlier this year HassanMousli said I have always tried to dothings as well as possible. Breeding horsesis a risk. I dont come from a family ofbreeders. I started with next to nothingbut had the support of Faiz Al Elweet. Iam lucky to be surrounded by a goodteam including Thomas Fourcy, my vetJean-Marie Betizeau and my staff.

"The lack of an affix means we lose a lotof impact. We have to try and keep thegood mares. We have a good broodmareband in Morgane de Piboul, AiglantineDjeiran, Flamme de Syrah, Al Hidya andFatzica. They are from bloodlines withdifferent profiles and pedigrees.

"I have always worked on instinct. Early onI choose mares mostly on conformation, but with time I learned their pedigreeswhich I now seriously take into account.Every breeder who produces good horsesneeds some luck but also intuition. That isthe strong point of trainers like ArnaudChaill-Chaill.

A few years ago we needed fresh blood. All of my horses are 25% non-Frenchblood. Old French bloodlines haveexceptional quality. The mixture withforeign blood adds speed andacceleration.

"I have different types of mares. Some arefrom confirmed bloodlines and others arefrom more original families. I thinkphysique is very important, a horse needsto be physically suitable to reproduce.

After a fantastic 2014 season when theirhorses recorded six Group 1 wins, 2015continues their good run with AlMourtajezs wins in the HH Emirs Swordand Al Rayyan Cup, plus Al Mouhannadsthird Zabeel International Stakes atNewbury last month.

Whilst the Omani peoples associationwith the Arabian horse goes back manycenturies, the Royal Cavalry of Oman wasfounded in the early 1970s by the Sultan ofOman and consisted of just 20 horses.Today it fulfils a managerial role for allequestrian activities, including racing, show jumping and polo and overseeingbreeding programmes, as well as providinghorses for ceremonial duties, for whichthey are famous worldwide. Oman wasalso the first of the Gulf countries tobecome a full member of theWorldArabian Horse Organisation in 1979.

Salim Al Hakmanis father worked withthem from the outset and because he hadgrown up around them it was only naturalthat he would follow his father into theCavalry. He explains. I began my trainingin 1987, learning to ride and after twomonths I went straight to the racing sectionand started racing the following year. In1989 we started to have runners in France,so I rode there and then in England. Wewould come for three to five months andstay with different trainers such as theKellaways in Newmarket and John Jenkinsin Royston.

With the annual Sultanate of Oman Raceday at Windsor fastapproaching, Salim Al Hakmani discusses his experiences with the Royal

Cavalry of Oman and Arabian Racing

    By Royal Appointment

  • T H E A R A B I A N R A C E H O R S E

In 2007 I stopped race riding, butcontinued with the horses; now if I havetime, I might ride occasionally, but notoften. I travelled a lot, riding in many racesin the UK, France, Dubai and Oman. In thepast, we had few races in Oman, not like itis now, as we have a much biggerprogramme.

Said Al Badi, he started riding a year laterthan me, in 1988 and hes also a trainer forthe Royal Cavalry in Oman, whilst I am aDirector of Racing. I help him select theright horses and jockeys and I also overseethe administration side of things, plus racecourse maintenance and so on.

This year the season starts in November, though in the past it has been the middle ofOctober, and we race until April. We haveracing once a week, with a nine race card, two thoroughbred races and seven Arabianraces. When racing started, it was just forthe Cavalry, but now the races are forowners from all over Oman.

We have more and more runners everyyear, not only do we breed, but we alsoimport horses from Dubai, Europe andAmerica. The domestic breedingprogramme is getting stronger, manypeople are now breeding. We now haveOmani bred horses racing in Qatar and weare getting very good results.

We have our big race meeting on 1stJanuary every year in Oman, for HisMajesty. The main race is theWadi DiqahHis Majestys Cup over a mile and aquarter and it is an invitation conditionsrace, so we have overseas runnerscompeting against the Omani trainedhorses. When I was a jockey, I won it fivetimes. The last time was in 2007 whenJulian Smart was the Royal Cavalrystrainer. After I that fifth win, I retired.

We also have apprentice races. For thosewe limit the runners to 10 and we use theolder horses from the Cavalry. The boysand girls come from the riding school tothe racing section, about seven of them andwe teach them race riding and how to lookafter the horses, with an English tutor whois contracted to the Cavalry. We teachthem to jump from the stalls and let themhave their own little races on the Cavalrysrace track in the middle of the equestriancomplex so that they can learn.

We film it so we can go back over it withthem and we also have an equicizer to helpthem improve with a big monitor in aspecial room. All the apprentices do thisevery day for an hour after riding with thetutor. They review every race finish to saywhat is wrong and what is right.

The first leg of the HH Sheikha Fatima bintMubarak Ladies World Championshipseries was run in Muscat in January thisyear. Speaking of the initiative Al Hakmanisaid. The Sheikha Fatima series is verygood, Lara does very well with the girls, travelling everywhere with them which isgood for the Arab girls. If Lara asks forjockeys we can give her two or three, it isno problem for us.

A supporter of all the series, not only withjockeys but horses too, the Cavalrys Mariftrained by Al Hakamani won the Ladiesrace at Newbury last year for Brazils JeanAlves as part of the ArabianWorldConference. Their own jockey, Miss AzarAlWardi also rode in the race.

The Commander of the Royal Cavalry is

Brigadier Abdulrazak Al Shahwarzi, who isalso Executive Director of the Royal HorseRacing Club. Al Hakmani credits him forhelping to progress the Omani peoplesinvolvement with horses and thedevelopment of a racing programme bybuilding the racetracks, importing horses, breeding horses and helping to sourcestallions.

When I started with the Cavalry theBrigadier took care of me, he sent me allaround the world to gain experience and tobe a good jockey. Said Al Badi and I werethe best jockeys in Oman and when westopped riding we became trainers. We arethankful to him for his trust as it is not easyto be a trainer for the Cavalry. I try to dothe best for the Cavalry to make them andHis Majesty happy.

The Royal Cavalry splits their Europeancommitments between France andWargrave Manor in England - which isboth a stud and a training facility for theirUK based runners in the summer months. They have 42 boxes at Wargrave, a trainingtrack, stalls, regular horse walker and a oneof the few water horse walkers in the UK.

With around 12 broodmares based atWargrave, Al Hakmani has been veryhappy with the results. Its very good to behere, we also have a stud in France, notmany horses, about 8 to 10. We like to foalat Wargrave and then at two years, we takethem to Oman. Last week we sent one toOman. He is a quality horse, we may racehim at three, but more likely four. I likebreeding horses here in the UK.Wargraveis a nice place, a quiet place, everything iseasy here. We have very good girls to takecare of the youngstock here. The land isvery good, it has good grass.

Some of the horses we have bred in theUK are very, very nice horses. One of themI like very much, Almarid, he won the 1m2fmaiden at Huntingdon last year. He is byMadjani and is one of the best horses Ihave had. Like the others, he has beenresting in Oman this summer, though webrought the horses back into training againlast week. He has only run that one race sofar, but he won very easily.Because of His Majestys ill health, theCavalrys presence in the UK wasdiminished this year, however theirsponsorship has still been important forUK Arabian racing. year, it has also been run at Salisbury andNottingham. Speaking of the event AlHakmani said. I think it is good to changeracecourses and move around the country, but I am very happy withWindsor, it isvery close, we will have the gifts and thetraditional tent again this year. We like toshare our culture, like they do on DubaiDay.

In the future I think we will try to do moreand perhaps increase the prizes, howeverwe leave that to the Brigadier. He alwaystries to do the best. We are pleased thatArabian racing is doing well in the UK withour help and also to see that there are somevery good races in the UK, such as those atNewbury and Goodwood. Next year wewill probably bring over about 25 horses.

    Dubai International Arabian Races this

year was a great success for the Cavalrysrunners with wins in the NBD Conditionsrace and the Group 1 ZaAbeel stakes.

Speaking of the day he said. AlMouhannad, she is a top filly to win threeZaAbeels. Our trainer hopes to come backfor a fourth attempt, but we will leave thisdecision to him because he knows thehorse best. When we spoke, he said wewill see; hopefully she can come back for afourth attempt, however if not, she willmake a very nice broodmare.

We were also very pleased with Vulcaindu Clos win and Djet Taouy. Djet has wonit and been second twice, maintaining hisform, but he is still like a baby and thewinner, Gazwan, is obviously a very nicehorse too.

Concluding the interview Al Hakmanireflected. Arabian racing seems to beimproving thanks to the efforts of SheikhHamdan, SheikhMansour and theQataris. I see a great jump. I first rode inthe UK in Arabian races in 1990 and Iremember on that first day at Fakenham, Irode two winners! Now we see a bigdifference in the quality of the big races. Now when I make entries we see 30 to 40horses, sometimes 60, not just a few. I feelthe conference also helps, it is good thatpeople get to talk and share ideas to movethings forward. The Arabian RacingOrganisation has also been a great help tous in the UK and I am looking forward toour runners at Windsor.

Though overcast, there was a good crowd, there being three Thoroughbred patternraces on the same Newbury card.Following heavy rain during the week, theunderfoot conditions were on the easyside and the race played out the way themarket suggested it would.

The market leader was HH SheikhMohammed bin Khalifa Al Thanis Ba'sil, who had set the pace and still finished acreditable fourth in the Group 1 QatarInternational Stakes at Goodwood twoweeks previously. His biggest danger wasRadames who had filled a similar positionbehind Al Mouhannad at Newbury in thesix furlong Gr 1 Jebel Ali ZaabeelInternational Stakes on Dubai Day last

month. These two were quickly into theirstride, Radames and Paul Hannagan takingit up on the stands side from Basil andHarry Bentley. Delishess and SpiritedGame were in behind tracked by SyrahGris and Eau Jember.

In the final furling these two acceleratedclear, but it was obvious that Basil alwayshad the measure of Radames. Coastinginto the lead, he still neededencouragement to maintain hisconcentration, but finished four lengthsclear of Radames for a decisive victory.Delishess was a further six lengths behindin third.

This gave trainer Julian Smart a fifthconsecutive win in this event, having wonwith Aden, Al Anga, and twice with theone-eyed Aziz. Given the qulaity of thosewinners, it was no surprise that this eventhad been upgraded to Group 2 status.

The excellent HH Sheikha Fatima bintMubarak Apprentice World Championshipseries returned to the UK with a 1m2fhandicap at Sandown Park. It was the firstevent on the eight race card which wassponsored in its entirety by the SheikhMansoor Festival.

Parma T was substituted after the

withdrawal of the Russian import, PoceluiVetra and there was little between the 10runner field on official ratings. Sharaf, ahalf brother to the exciting Muraaqib (aGroup 1 winner at Deauville this month),set the pace under UK representative RobHornby. Stablemates Oriental Myth andManuel Fernandes for Portgual weretucked in behind on the rail, in companywith Maazin and Polands KamilGrzybowski, with Zayin Zachilles andNicola Sechi for Germany between themand Maghazi under Hungarys AdamBenko on their outside.

As they rounded the turn to faceSandowns infamous hill the runnersspread across the track, Sharaf still out infront with Magahzi with Zayin Zachillesstalking them on the rail. Ian Queally hadto get serious with Karar, but heresponded gamely for pressure and withthree furlongs to go was challengingMaghazi for second. Also running on wellwas Man Of Dreams for Swedens FannyOlsson; he had won the HH SheikhaFatima bint Mubarak Ladies WorldChampionship event at Lingfield on hisseasonal debut this term.

Karar hit the front with a quarter of a mileto run, drawing a couple of lengths clear, but with his ears pricked was idling andclearly still hand plenty in hand. Man OfDreams moved into second, but was nomatch for the winner, with the very gamelong-time leader Sharaf just a neck back in

    third, ahead of Maghazi.

The young Irishman was in fine form, having ridden a winner at his nativeKillarney the previous evening. Speakingafter the race he said. It was a brilliantexperience. My first time ridding in theUK, completely different to what wereused to in Ireland and Im delighted to ridea winner. Arabians are a little bit differentto the Thoroughbreds, they feel as if theyare going to quicken up but they dont, they just keep going. Joseph OBrien gaveme some sound advice when I told himthat I was riding in an Arabian race, as Idnever ridden an Arabian before.

This series is a fantastic opportunity foryoung riders and Ive just heard that I willbe going to Abu Dhabi to ride in the Finalsin November, so Im really looking forwardto that.

Trainer Beverly Deutrom, who hadendured a nightmare trip with this horseand three others to Belgium that week, was delighted with her horsesperformance and that of the fourthMaghazi. It was an horrendous trip, wehad a blow out and had to wait at the sideof the road for four hours, so Belgium wasjust a write off basically. Theyve bouncedback amazingly here. Were only an houraway from Sandown, so its ideal for us.He is a nice young horse, but backward, mentally and physically, so next we hopehe will be even better.

I think it is a fantastic series, obviouslyyou have to go in with your eyes open andrealise that you might not get anexperienced apprentice. For exampleMaghazis rider probably got out riddentoday, but he has had few rides incomparison to most of the others, thoughit is the same for everyone. We had agreat jockey in Ian Queally for Kararthough.

    BATH REVIEW

DIAR Season Finale, Sunday 20thSeptember Handicap Stakes (0-50)4yo+ 1m2f Good to firmBath 31 July

A good crowd was in place for the eveningmeeting at Bath, the weather remainedsunny and the ground was given as goodto firm for the mile and a quarter event.Though the ten runners produced jointfavourites in Vindetta and Top Trip, it wasSENOR DUBLCHECK and Ultimate Forcewho could barely be separated at thebusiness end.

At the flip start, Kayclaire, who has notalways looked the most straightforward atthe off, was led in and had to be bustledalong by Joseph Walsh to get competitive.Top Trip and Stef Gandola employed theirusual front running tactics, but needed afair amount of encouragement to maintainthat position as Ulitmate Force and LBFarrah were pressing for the lead insidethe mile marker.

Ulitmate Force and Steve Harrisonprevailed, ahead of LB Farrah on the railand Vindetta travelling sweetly behind.Top Trip dropped away through the fieldand was soon passed by the diminutiveSouthpaw, Callymay and Senor Dublcheckwho is best delivered late. Entering thestraight with three furlongs to go, PhilCollington looked poised to strike onVindetta, however Senor Dublcheck alsoappeared dangerous and was yet to makehis run.

Ultimate Force appeared a little green, idling in front and handing the lead toVindetta, but it was Rob Wollard whocollared them all with a well timed run onSenor Dublcheck down the middle of thetrack, though they did give Vindetta abump on the way past it didnt stop herrun. Ultimate Force rallied gamely toregain second and ran a cracker in defeat,he was only a nose off breaking his maidenand may benefit from headgear in thefuture.

This was Senor Dublchecks fifth careerwin from 46 starts, however Claire Taylorsgrey has also been placed 13 times and heneeds to be produced on the line to score.

Two fascinating debutants in the shapeof Emiraaty and Harmonie Du Soleil soa paddock check is advised with thatpair. Rihan shaped with great promisein one start in France and gettingweight all round is also worthy ofconsideration. However providing theground isn't too testing the selction isStorm Troupour who showed goodearly pace on his Uk debut and a stepdown in trip looks a sensible move.

Nicsar Diamond Jubilee is graduallyprogressing and can't be completelydiscounted. Musique Du Soleil is aninteresting debutant for a yard whohave won a restricted maiden alreadythis season. Sabah and Worood both arrive herehaving shown fair form in France andthis stage of there careers they're opento any amount of improvement.

However they'll have to be prettysmart to beat Cheik Roque who wonon his debut before finishing third in aGroup 2 on his scond outing. He has togive weight away but he looks verysmart and should be able to carry hispenalty.

Syrah Gris hasn't won for a while buthe always runs his race and he's nowdropped below his last winning mark.Whilst down in trip Mazaaya isinteresting. Spirited Game won herelast year over two furlongs furthershe's been aggressively campaignedthis year but is now in a race she has arealistic chance of winning.

The pick though is Kao Kat MHF whowon well at Newbury on hispenultimate outing before performingwell in Group company in Belgiumrecently, he can bounce back towinning ways.

Peter Hammersley looks to have astrong hand here with four of theseven runners. Of those Zayin Zodiac isprobably the pick, as he's down ingrade here, though a good run fromKermit The Frog wouldn't surprise.

The selection is the maiden Synergywho is up in grade but ran a personalbest on her handicap debut and looksto have been brought along gradually.A slight improvement from her recentrun would probably be enough.

    4.30 Al KasfahSpring RestrictedMaiden Stakes3+ PA 6f

A fascinating conditions race. BelloneDu Croate looks the pick of the SalimAl Hakmani trio but will probably needto better her previous efforts by someway to get involved. Of the othersToutatix is preferred over stablecompanion Jaldi Karo. Vent De Faustneeds to bounce back from a pooreffort. So the pick is Radames who wassecond in this race last year and isreunited with Phil Collington for thefirst time since that run. He'll find thiseasier than some recent assignments.

Unusually all 7 of these met each otherat Bath on there most recent outing. That race was run at a very strong paceand that's less likely here given thefiguration of the course. On thatoccasion Senor Dublecheck just got hebetter of Ultimate Force but a reverseof the placings wouldn't surprise here.Whilst Top Trip made all to beat CrownOf Salona in this race last year and theyreturn on the same terms. A chance istaken though on Vindetta who wears avisor for the first time she's been veryconsistent of late and can gain anoverdue first success.
