"FOR THE LORD YOUR GOD BEFRIENDS THE ALIEN, FEEDING AND CLOTHING THEM. SO YOU TOO MUST BEFRIEND THE ALIEN, FOR YOU WERE ONCE ALIENS

YOURSELVES." An Advent Sourcebook, p. 98.

We begin this Third Week of Advent which is the last full week of the season, since next Sunday is Christmas Eve. Hopefully, during this season we have become more aware of not just the presence of Emmanuel in our lives but the hope that he will return again in glory. In the meantime, we continue to celebrate his life in us and the life of our parish and church.

The quotation at the beginning of this column is from the Book of Deuteronomy. The writer is reminding us of the presence of foreigners in our lives, and how we must care for them; like we do with anyone else. With all that is in the news about undocumented people being deported, this message is just as important for us today as it was when Deuteronomy was written. If we want the kingdom of God to be a reality for everyone, then we must be willing to care for all those whom God sends into our lives. If we want our society to be a just one, then we must promote justice for all by the way we treat them as equals to all of us.

In today's Gospel, John is telling the folks that whomever they are expecting, he is not the one. He is a voice call-ing out that there is someone who will come after him and who is greater than he. What John offers is an oppor-tunity for folks to get their lives in order so that they are ready to greet the Messiah when he appears. Are we just as prepared to meet the Lord if he were to return today, tomorrow or any time in our lifetime? Or are we just so content that we are willing to sit and wait, and maybe miss the opportunity to help others discover the wonder that Jesus is for all of us?

Let's not overlook the fact that even though we await the Lord's return in glory, he is present in the Word, the Breaking of the Bread, and especially in each of our lives. Like, John, we too are called to prepare the way of the Lord, all the while celebrating his presence among us.

HAPPY ADVENT!!!

~ FR. JOE

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Caroline Ponterio, Principal

MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS CUSTOM IS…

Here are a few of our 5th graders favorite Christmas customs and how they help them to remember Jesus.

“getting a tree with my friends, decorating it and going to families’ houses. It helps me remember Jesus because his birthday is on Christmas.”

“going to church and spending time with my family. It helps me celebrate Jesus’ birth.”

“getting presents because it reminds me of all the gifts Jesus grants to other people.”

“the presents because Jesus is like a gift. God sent Jesus to us. Just like our parents give us gifts. We give them gifts back. And we give God something in return. We pray and go to church so we are giving back to God.”

“waiting on Christmas Eve and praying to Jesus that my presents come. Praying reminds me of the Nativity and how the shepherds and Kings came to give Jesus gifts.”

Here are a few favorite customs from our staff:

“my father would go downstairs to turn on the Christmas music and we lined up (all 7 of us), youngest to oldest, and headed downstairs to find our gifts on Christmas morning. It reminds me of the three kings and the anticipation they had following the star and finally arriving to find the newborn King. What a gift they received!”

“putting up the Nativity with my siblings and trying to be the first one to unwrap and find baby Jesus and place him in the center. This reminds me of Jesus because he is the center of my life.”

“to go on a trolley ride through town with Santa while singing Christmas carols. We are reminded of Jesus' love through song and celebration and are thankful for the talents and joy God has blessed us with.”

“to set up the nativity under the tree before Christmas but we wait until after midnight to put baby Jesus in the manger. We do this before we open any presents to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.”

Whatever your favorite Christmas custom, let us remember JESUS, who IS the reason for the season.

CHRISTMAS WAFER ~ OPLATEK

The legacy of the Christmas Wafer (Oplatek) is revered and unique, a universal symbol of family and parish unity. Throughout the centuries millions of Catholics / Christians share this Christmas Wafer. It emphasizes that we pray that all sorrows and breeches may be healed and vanish; that forgiveness is exchanged; that joy may reign. We are truly “one in the Spirit” We are one in the Lord! As you break and share the Oplatek with your loved ones at Christmas, may distance between us disappear; may our thoughts unite us with fond and precious memories where our hearts are unable to be physically present.

“Glory to God in the Highest… Peace on Earth to All People of Good Will!”

Oplatek-Christmas Wafers will be available Dec. 16/17 after all masses while the supply lasts.

All proceeds from your generous “free-will offering” will be given to Fr. John Dennehy to donate to the St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark on behalf of our parish.

WEEKLY MASS INTENTIONS

INTENTIONS FOR THE SICK

At the “General Intercessions” we pray for the sick. Our prayers for the sick are very important, especially in critical times of sudden illness, surgery or worsening condition. We will continue to pray for and mention the names of our sick parishioners for three weeks when we receive notice from the family or the individual asking for prayers. After three weeks, the name will continue to be listed in the bulletin, until we receive notice otherwise. If the condition worsens, please call the Rectory so that the name can be mentioned during Mass again.

May They Rest in the Peace of Christ

HOSPITAL VISITATIONS

If you or someone you know is in the hospital please

inform the hospital staff that you are Catholic and a

member of Saint James the Apostle Church. The

priests and deacons will be able to find you so a visit

can be arranged. Contact the Rectory to have a name

added at Mass and/or to the Prayer Line.

Please be sure to include hospital information.
