words of thanks from students to our donorsDear Mrs. Marta Weeks-Wulf,

My name is Matthew Tave and I am currently the president of the Texas Tech AAPG Student Chapter in Lubbock, Texas. I wanted to write you and express our chapter’s genuine thanks and appreciation for awarding us with the $1,000 scholarship. Our chapter is growing slowly and steadily and without your contribution it would be an even slower growth. The money will be put to good use by next year’s officers. Some of the money will go immediately to fund travel expenses for students attending the AAPG Spring Expo in Norman, Oklahoma next week. Also, there are plans to use the money to fund students attending the AAPG Fall student Expo in Houston next year as well as possibly other AAPG sponsored expos in the fall. So thank you again from all of us in the Texas Tech chapter and we wish you the best.

Sincerely,Matthew Tave

Dear Classen Family,

I’m truly honored and so grateful to be receiving the Classen Family Named Grant. The day I received this award I literally started jumping up and down with excitement. It made my day and it has made my semester! This grant has contributed and will continue to contribute significantly in the completion of my thesis. Thank you SO MUCH for your support.

Sincerely,Gabriela Keeton

Dear Mr. Ian Dunderdale,

My passion for Earth science prompted me to choose Geology as my undergraduate major. I feel very grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue my studies in geology at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami.

Again, I thank you for your generosity and support. SEAPEX is a very well known petroleum organization in South East Asia, hence, as an Indonesian, it is truly a big honor to me to receive the SEAPEX Named Grant.

Sincerely, Irena Andisa Maura

FOUNDATIONPROGRAMDISTRIBUTION

On behalf of the Trustees of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation, it is my pleasure

to share with you the 2012 Annual Report.

As a 501(c)(3) Foundation, we are committed to our mission statement of supporting educational, charitable and scientific objectives that benefit the geologic profession and the general public. We administer resources according to donor intent so the programs that are funded provide much needed support to students and professionals of the geosciences. During the Fiscal Year 2012, the Foundation raised $ 2.75 million in new contributions and administered $2.13 million in the form of grants and program support.

In addition to presenting in this report a list of donors, funds and grants awarded, you will find highlights of events and activities that occurred during the year. Among the initiatives for this coming year, the Foundation is committed to growing the impact of our current programs, introducing a new program called the Military Veterans Scholarship program and implementing a new measurement and evaluation tool that should provide helpful information to the Foundation and the participants of our programs.

As always, our work would not be possible without the support of donors, past and present. I look forward to what the future holds for future generations of geoscientists.

Sincerely,

Bill Fisher

William L. Fisher, Chairman, Board of Trustees, AAPG Foundation

From energy to water, from minerals to building materials, the foundation of modern society is built on the geosciences. But

every time I pick up a newspaper or engage a friend in conversation I’m reminded how few people understand that fact.

It suggests to me the AAPG Foundation’s mission to promote the geosciences and encourage students to pursue studies and careers that use geoscience to benefit society is more important than ever.

Over more than four decades the AAPG Foundation has established a strong legacy of doing just that. And Chairman Fisher and the Trustees are committed to building for the future. It is a privilege for all of us on the Foundation staff to work with them to focus and improve our existing programs, evaluate emerging opportunities, and search for better ways to accomplish our mission.

Thank you for sharing this vision and passion and for partnering with the AAPG Foundation. The many activities the Foundation supports are only possible through your generous

giving, and we take seriously the stewardship of these gifts.

The AAPG Foundation’s mission is vital and, as you’ll read in these pages, its programs are positively affecting the lives of a new generation of geoscientists – and the science itself – all across the globe. Together we’re investing in the future.

Sincerely,

6 [AAPG FOUNDATION]

[aaPg foundation highlights]

The American Association of Petroleum Geologists Foundation mission is to support educational, charitable and scientific objectives that benefit the geologic profession and the general public. Because this mission is immense, the founders divided it into priorities, which remain a focal point today.

The Foundation proudly supports the endeavors of the world’s largest professional geological society, AAPG. Although AAPG is a member-driven organization, the Foundation is able, under its 501(c)(3) guidelines, to support AAPG’s educational

and scientific activities that benefit the geologic profession and are available to the general public. AAPG’s purpose is to foster scientific research, advance the science of geology, promote technology and inspire high professional conduct. The AAPG Foundation’s programs and activities that support AAPG, directly and indirectly, are found in the pages to follow. Aside from maintaining its own programs and supporting many of AAPG’s programs and services, other educational and scientific opportunities have been identified in the geologic community that also receive support from the AAPG Foundation.

For fiscal year 2012, the Foundation operating revenue amounted to $1.75M, compared to last year for the same period of $2.14M. Revenues came primarily from rental income, interest, dividends, capital gains and oil and gas royalties. Operating expenses totaled $1.59M compared to the previous year of $1.48M.

Contributions to the Foundation were $2.75M (up 22% from the previous year’s $2.18M) and awards and grants distributed were $2M (up from the previous year’s $1.7M).

Approximately 8% of AAPG members in the U.S. and 5.42% of members overall contributed to the Foundation this fiscal year.

Program SupportThe Foundation continues to provide funding for many of the core programs supported

the past several years as well as some new programs.

During the past year, the Foundation continued to support many of the valuable geological programs it has supported over the years such as the Visiting Geoscientist Program, the AAPG Bulletin, the Energy Resource Library, Education Programs and the Graduate Student Competition known as the Imperial Barrel Award. Two new Digital Products University Subscriptions were initiated at the $15,000 level: The University of New Mexico and the University of Minnesota. The Foundation provided funding for ten North American and one International Distinguished Lecture tour. Sixty-eight undergraduate students and their universities were the recipients of an L. Austin Weeks Undergraduate Grant this past year.

The Grants-in-Aid program continues to grow with 82 Named/Memorial grants. These grants can be used for a qualified candidate from any university with a geology department. Biographies of all Named and Memorial Grants are listed on the Foundation’s Web site at foundation.aapg.org/gia/names.cfm. The minimum contribution to establish a Named/Memorial Grant is $25,000.

For the 2011-2012 GIA Program, the Grants-in-Aid Committee, chaired by David Sivils, selected 82 deserving graduate students to receive Foundation support totaling $175,000 through the program. The Grants-in-Aid program continues to support graduate and post-graduate students in the studies related to earth science aspects of the petroleum energy industry, including exploration and development of hydrocarbons and economic sedimentary minerals and relevant applications of environmental geology. Student recipients were invited to submit their abstracts for publication in the AAPG BULLETIN and on the Search and Discovery Web site.

The L. Austin Weeks Memorial medal was established in 2008, and is the Foundations highest award, given in recognition for extraordinary philanthropy and service directed to advance the mission of the AAPG Foundation. The premier award honors the late L. Austin Weeks, whose philanthropic legacy set an exemplary standard. This year, the award went to William J. Barrett. He was presented the medal at the Opening Session in Long beach, CA, in April, 2012.

Herb Davis was the 14th recipient of the Chairman’s Award for his support to the Foundation. Davis accepted his award at the AAPG Foundation Trustee Associate Annual Meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona.

MembershipThe AAPG Foundation Trustee Associates membership totaled 277 as of June 30,

2012. Officers are Don O’Nesky (Chairman), Stewart Henry (Vice Chairman) and David Worthington (Secretary/Treasurer). The 2011 annual meeting was held in Lake Tahoe, California, and the 2012 meeting was held in Scottsdale, Arizona. Six new Trustee Associate members were added during the current year and four passed away. The Trustee Associates support has been and continues to be a critical and important factor in the growth and development of the Foundation.

At the annual meeting of the Members of the Corporation in Long Beach, CA in April of 2012, Jim Gibbs and Bill Gipson were re-elected as Trustee members of the Foundation Corporation. Mike Wisda and Toby Carleton were re-elected as Members of the Corporation. Rick Fritz was newly elected to serve a five-year term.

The Board of Trustees extends a heartfelt thank you to each contributor for continued support of the Foundation’s vision and mission. Together we can build a better foundation for the geosciences.

As an ever-growing field, geoscience has no shortage of needs - the dissemination of current, accurate information to the public, research funding, grants to university students, publications to universities that have lean budgets, K-12 rock kits, young professional career guidance, and the list goes on.

The vision to “give back” has taken hold within the petroleum geology industry. In the AAPG Foundation’s history, more than $34.6 million has been received by the Foundation from more than 15,000 donors; $22.2 million (64%) has been received in just the last seven years from more than 7,100 donors.

Amazingly, more than 900 donors have given consistently to the AAPG Foundation for the last 10 years. Almost 200 of those have given for more than 20 years. The culture of philanthropy is catching on among the AAPG membership, and certainly it extends beyond life. More than $12 million has been contributed to the Foundation in the form of bequests.

The 90/10 rule (90% of gifts come from the top 10% of donors) did not hold true this year. Ninety percent of the gifts came from the top two percent of donors. Sixty-six percent of contributions came from AAPG members. Thirty percent of this year’s contributions came from companies. There are 10,837 individuals who have given to the Foundation at some point, but not in the last 12 months. We are hopeful of attracting these donors to contribute in the future.

Under two percent of total gifts have come in from outside the United States, but 32 percent of the Foundation’s grants go to students outside the U.S. annually. The reach of the AAPG Foundation extended to more countries this past year and will go farther in the years to come. We honor the donor, and yet, we ask still. The challenge to fulfill the mission is there, and a lofty one it is.

The AAPG Foundation received 3,325 gifts this fiscal year totaling over $2.7 million. More than half (54%) of the gifts to the AAPG Foundation came from Trustee Associates. Thirty percent came from companies.
