Since the completion of Round 7, the VAFA have hadsixty-six players from thi rty-six clubs represent thecompetition in three matches . Whilst not all of theresults have gone our way, the competition we haveencountered has certainly improved and we need torespond to re-establish ourselves as the premiercommunity football competition in Australia .The highlight of the games was the outstandingvictory of the A-D4 team against the SouthernFootball League . All plaudits must go to their coach,George Voyage, who has reigned supreme for tenyears. It hasn't been as if these matches have allbeen one sided affairs. In this match the only timewe were ahead was after the last kick of the match .Vice Captain, Al M cQueen-Parton (Old Carey), whoearlier in the week had been ruled out by the physics, marked in the goal square and kicked truly to put usahead for the first time . Congratulations also toCaptain David Boundy ( Old Paradians), whocontinues to represent the competition so admirablyat State level .In regard to the Under 23 match against the ''" "Lmay I quash some ill-informed stateme ; '> re, 'ingthe timing of this fixture . Unfortunately the ;sternAustralian and Victorian long weekends do notcoincide, therefore once every three years we play amatch during a round to allow them to travel duringtheir long weekend . Last year WA missed a roundwhen they hosted the VAFA on our Queen's Birthdayweekend and this year we reciprocated .1'>',MFL are to be congratulated on their outstandingimprovement over the past few seasons . They weresoundly beaten by us two seasons ago and haveplaced huge emphasis on rebuilding their name inthe football community. They are heavily supportedby their Commission and the West Coast Eagles andthey repaid them with their first ever win inMelbourne . I am sure our coaching staff and players

espond to this los swhen we play SouthAustralia during the Aand B Section bye onJuly 15. 1

The third match was held in Brisbane between ourUnder 19's and the AFLQ's Under 21's . Whilst wewere defeated in this match, our players put up aspirited performance against a team that wasconsiderably stronger and more experienced thanus

. They had played rep footy together as theyprogressed through their Talent IdentificationPrograms in the Under 16's and Teal Cup

. Whilst itwas disappointing to have the match transferredfrom the Gabba due to heavy overnight rain, theground at Cooparoo provided excellent playingconditions for all players to display their skills

    .

These matches have provided our players with theprivilege of representing their state and showcasingtheir talents on a grander scale . We trust that theywill resume with their clubs today wiser for theexperience and with added maturity to assist theirclub in reaching its goals for the season

    .

Finally, the VAFA Executive extends its thanks to allthe volunteers who have worked so diligently toensure that all players are given the bestopportunities to perform at their best in the matches.

  • where they're at .

It's 26 years since someone kicked 100 goals inAmateur football . 1980 . The age of Pac Man, Dallas,Blokes swaggering into Amadeus nightclub in thinleather ties . In 1980, Matthew Handley was five yearsaway from being a twinkle in his dad's eye . In 2006, thisyoung Xaverian, barely heard of a month ago, is aserious chance to reach the ton (shortened quartersand all! )

Had my first proper look at him last Saturday and yes,the boy can seriously play . Like many guys who didn'tplay a heap of Junior footy, he plays a remarkablyuncomplicated game : Lead, mark, goal, iron out anyonein your way.

Some of the hits he received from further afield wereextraordinary

. Travid Ruyg in particular seems to have areal affinity with the big full forward and landed somedoozies on his chest while Tim Ockleshaw was insparkling form, despite several quality opponents . Attimes last year, you had to wonder whether Tim wouldever play again but he's back and fit and as dangerousas ever

. Lucas Harry made a solid debut in the ruck, relieving the swarthy David Sappupo . Also liked thegame of the blood-nut James Scanlon .

And Scotch? They were so bad that you had to wonderif it was a deliberate foxing ploy to give away nothing toa team that they will surely have to beat in a finals gameto clinch a premiership

. I mean, they were really, reallybad . At least the school side won .

Win of the round had to be Trinity, who were in rottenform before their clash with Bernards but came outsmoking and never gave the `Pitters a sniff . Big plauditsto Tom Eckersley, who managed four while Rambo andThe Big Cat both turned one on . The Ts are going to bea real nuisance this year, particularly at Bulleen . As clubsecretary and tipster in torment Fraser Cameron keepsinsisting, they won't be going to B Section without onemighty fight .

Marcellin, on the other hand, are in all sorts . The Eagleis well and truly stranded . De La skipped away to theirfourth consecutive win, with Aaron Shields and Jezza LaRagy doing as they pleased . The game next weekagainst Xavs is one of the most important in De La'srecent history and will give us a better indication o f

    2

    The Blues versusGrammar game was

a rout. David Paton, avery handy pick u pfrom the Tallangatta district (the home of bushranger"Mad Dan" Morgan) booted nine for the students . AndOMs, well they didn't go very well at all .

Haileybury v Xavs . It's a bit like U2 v Nickleback (orNichoback) on one of those Triple M smackdowns . Anightmare to tip this one, simply because the Bloods arevirtually impossible to dislodge at the Badlands, whilethe Xavs haven't lost in white shorts for a helluva longtime . Not sure who'll play full-back for Haileybury butbuddy, I hope you've got insurance (and a decentshrink) . Home side in a toss of the coin .

De La v Ivanhoe is similarly tough but I'll go for the awayside, who are sure to be suited by the sartorial splendorof the De La home ground. Again though, it's anabsolute raffle this one .

MILESTONESIts been a milestone frenzy at Trinity in recentweeks

. Chris Amiconi, Zac Williams and one of oursenior Vice-Captains Brent "Big Cat" Walsh eachchalked up 50 games in the past couple of rounds, whilst Robert Gamble, David Cristiano and TobyVanderVene passed the 100 game mark . TheGambler has been locking down A reserve keyforwards for many years since finishing at the schoolin 1997 whilst 'Woofa' has been transformed from aleading U19 goalkicker into a versatile reservesdefender who has a knack of towelling talleropponents . Both players were pre-season standouts, and are a great example to their younger team-mates . Finally, our other senior Vice-Captain TobyVanderVene came back to Trinity from Collegians in2001 and has been one of our prime midfielders forthe past 6 years . Toby is a much loved member ofour senior side . Congratulations to all boys on theirmilestones .De La Salle congratulates Richie Marks on 100games . Richard started at De La in 1998 with theClub 18 Division 1 team

. He has since played 50games with the Warriors, 42 games with theReserves and 8 Senior games, making his Seniordebut in 2003 . A very consistent, fit and hard runningplayer, who was the Warriors best in finals in 1999,Richard is a great personality around the Club

    .

Congratulations on your 100 games achieved lastSaturday against Marcellin and all the best for thenext 100 Richie !

  • A well earned break should see us all back and firing andready for action again today as we head into the last tworounds of the first half .

    REVIEW

Up at the Uni Oval, Beaumaris broke a year long droughtagainst their hoodoo side Uni Blacks . Pretty close gameup to three quarter time, then Beauy with big MickMatulick down forward marking everything in sight tooktotal control to totally demoralise the Blacks who arereally looking forward to the break and a chance toregroup . Brayden Hynes in his 100th was terrific forBeatty, first gamer Kelvin Barnes made a nice debut andMichael Atkins controlled the back half. Matt Kemptonis playing beautiful footy for the Blacks, Luke O'Connelland Luke Van Kempen also good .

Tough encounter at headquarters for OEG as they tookmost of the game to shake off a desperate Skevvies .They have been competitive all season and are unluckyto find themselves in this difficult position . Top effortsfor OEG from a rejuvenated Cory Innes, CaptainCourageous Leask, Boomer Clifton and Chief Wilson sawthe Bombers go 5/2 .Another tough game at the office for Mazenod againstold rivals Old Brighton . Full credit to the Tonners, whoalthough not at full strength are playing as a pretty goodunit . Andy MacGillivray with 8 and Adam Pirrie with 4made it tough for the Nodders' defence . Callan Buckleyand Nick Williams also pretty good . Best players forMazenod were captain Ben Chamberlain Dom Dunnewho disguised himself as a Ruck Rover and first gamerTom Bailey .Great first half by the Lions where they blew Whitefriarstotally out of Friar Park. Jono Dixon and Shure Taft weredangerous up forward and the backline of Hosking,Roach, Mooney and Rowston are all providing plenty ofdrive. An improved second half by the Friars addedsome respectability to the score with Hilton,Cunningham and day all battling hard .At Glenhuntly Park the Caulfield Grammarians provedtoo strong for MHSOB .

PREVIEWOld Brighton welcomes Beaumaris to South Road . The y

    a

would iae well advised not to ta`e the Sharks

lightly as the players arereally adapting toRussell Barnes' style offootball and are a pretty competitive unit . But the breakwill have given a few of the Tonners' injured players achance to recover and at home they will take the pointsin an entertaining game.Old Essendon welcome Caulfield Grammarians toPenleigh and what a beauty this promises to be . Secondplaying Third, so the winner will take the psychologicaladvantage and bragging rights . Both in pretty good formand have plenty of good players, so picking a winner istough but the old advantage of home ground sways me" Smooth" to stick with the Bombers .The hapless Skevvies make a sho rt trek across town totackle the classy Lions . Try as they might, and theirplight is ce rtainly not due to their lack of desperation, the visitors will just no be able to match all of the Lion'smatch winners and will unfo rtunately go 0-8 .Whitefriars await the Blacks at Friar Park . Both wouldhave enjoyed the week off and the chance to regrou p

  • and look forward to their clash today. It is always hard

to pick against the Friars at home and I won't be doingthat today as they return to the winning list .Mark Murray and his new side welcome his old club tothe High School Oval . No quarter will be given or takenhere as they all try really hard to impress each other

    .

NiHSOB have certainly been the best performed side ofthe two but if the Nodders can get a couple of forwardsback in they could provide a bit of cheek. But the High athome should and will win .

    L'3#_7T1JSV. :L3 S' i rs OCFC congratulates Chris W ood on

reaching the 100 game milestone recently . Aftermissing almost 2 full seasons of football due toserious injury, Woody made a welcome return to thefold this year. A great favourite of the Friarsupporters, all at the club hope that the next 100 isachieved in double quick time .All of us at B+ ~ ris congratulate a truly greatclubman in Nicf ; i;er for reaching the 150 gamemark against Uni Blacks last week, Nick followed inthe footsteps of his father Gerry when he joined theclub in 1996 as a sixteen year old

. Nick playedjuniors and then U/19s for two years before beingselected for his first senior game in 1999 and sincethen he has been a very committed member of thesenior squad both on and off the field, His 150games are evenly broken up between U/19s, Ressiesand Seniors and he has represented the club withpride at all levels . It was terrific to see him win apremiership medallion with the reserves last yearafter the disappointment of missing out with theseniors in 2003 because of a business trip to China .Well done Nick !

Some of the Reds play was simplyscintillating, but it came in patches only . Monash were solid allday, with the 'bookends' of Michael Davidson (regularly out-marking Kane Maghamez) and Tom Craven (jagging 6 snags)epitomizing the Ashes' diligence . It took a major on the siren, the 3rd from 2004 Fisher Medallist Ameet Bains, to narrowthings back to a 1 point Reds' lead . Unfortunately, the loss ofkey Redder Todd Clarke, plus the squandering of severalFitzroy opportunities, meant the first four goals of the last termwent the home side's way. It was more of thesame in the second term as The Chief, Lambert and Carr keptgetting first use of the pill at the stoppages . Trailing by 34points at the main break, the Jackas had to make somepositional changes, and this triggered a great revival. 2nd quarter became anopen-range shoot out aseach team moved the ball IIswiftly into their forwardlines, with OC ruckmanStephen Derry givin ggood service to the on-ballers and Andrew Sali .: > runninghard of his back flank . Down by 10 at the main break, OldParadians nailed the first 3 goals to take the lead . To theircredit, with Hardenberg, Hendrie and debutant U19 DamienMcCabe stepping up, the Wellers recovered in the final fewminutes to square the term . Again the game see-sawed, firstseeing to Parade, but not sawing enough back to the Wellerswho missed a long attempt to grab the lead before timee r I with the ball deep in their attack again . A critical awaywin for Parade, who well may be a factor yet!! !C ._ -v- Parkdale Vulture sOrmond bounced back from 3 successive losses to record an84 point win over Parkdale Vultures at the Buxton Oval onSaturday. Ormond struggled early to open up any sort of breakas Parkdale flooded back into the Ormond forward linecausing a very low scoring and even first half. After the mainbreak, the floodgates certainly opened!! Ash Russell, playinghis first game of the year, capped off a great day kicking 6goals for the game, and certainly received good service fromSimon Keleher, Wayne Cove, Leigh Deledio and Dave Robbinsin the midfield .TipsAlmost at the halfway mark and things are still tight all the wayfrom 2nd spot downwards!! . NOBSPC simply have to winagainst Old Camberwell at the Gillon, but I simply can't see ithappening!! OC by 15 points. Hampton Rovers hike down thefreeway to face Parkdale, and should return with thechocolates by 22 points. The Top Two face off at Brindis i

  • ROUND SEVEN REVIEWEmmaus St . Leo's scored their first win of the season inmost emphatic style, winning by 35 points at the BSG,but more impressively being the first side to defeatRupertswood this season . Paul Baranello and Nic Robi nin particular stood out amongst a great team effort fromthe Animals .A consummate display of D1 football was on show atDunshea Oval as Old Carey's superior touch in front ofgoal got them over the line against Old Geelong by 16points . Parton and Tiras split a dozen between them forthe Panthers, while Tom Betts performed well in theruck for the Oggers . Both teams however lost keyplayers in Jogger White (OC) and Mark Vickers-Willis(0G) .Yarra Valley beat Prahran by 12 points in a toughencounter at Toorak Park. A controversial free kickawarded to Prahran right on three quarter time lookedto give the Two Blues much needed momentum, but theBushrangers managed to hold strong . Rob Drew in his100th game starred for Valley, while Wil Watford stoodout at both ends of the ground for Prahran .Therry Penola once again fell on the wrong side of anarrow margin last week, losing to BulleenTemplestowe by one point at John Pascoe FawknerReserve . A dramatic finish saw Therry whittle down themargin from three goals, before being unable to scorefrom a 65 metre shot after the siren .Old Mentonians scored a fantastic win at the PlayingFields, defeating Banyule by 108 points . MidfieldersKade Murphy, Rowan Ball and Justin Field wereparticularly damaging, with Michael Basile and ChadTwentyman causing havoc up forward and Justin Vickand Anthony Palmer holding things together in defence .

PreviewYarra Valley OB host Old Mentonians at DomeneyReserve . With both teams 3-4, they would stillharbour finals aspirations . That may be a way off atthis stage, but they will be happy to even their win-lossrecord first . Both team have their share of classplayers, but it may well be the second- and third-tierplayers who decide the outcome today. The Panthers'Palmer and Vick will have their hands full trying tocontain the likes of James Keem Could go either way,but at home, I'll throw my lot in with the Bushrangerstoday.Emmaus St . Leo's travel to Toorak Park for their matchagainst Prahran . With just one win between them, thisis your classic relegation scrap . Eighth placed Banyul e

    20

are two games and ahealthy percentageclear of the drop zone,so this game is crucialto both sides' ambitio nof preserving their D 1status for 2007 . The Two Blues will need to make themost of the chance created by Michael Radywonik inthe ruck, while the Animals will need another collectiveeffort from their forwards like last time out . I'm soimpressed by their last result that I'll pick the Animalstoday.Banyule take on Therry Penola at Warringal Parklands, with both teams looking to return to winning ways .Therry's Corey Bannister was well held last week and Ican't see him being down for two weeks straight, whileJustin Crotty continues to impress . Also look forJason Hermes to build on his performance from lastweek . The Bears may like their chances at home, buta 108-point defeat is pretty hard to rebound from rightaway . I'll plump for the Lions this time around .Two top four clashes to finish with . Firstly, the Bulleenderby between Bulleen Templestowe and Old Careytakes place at The Ted . Although the Bullants may havebeen less than impressive at times so far this season, their two game break over fifth place Therry tells it s

  • own story. As for the Panthers, a gutsy win over fellow

finals contender Old Geelong has restored them to topspot, and perhaps flag favouritism (we'1l see what theysay on the D1 forum on 'BigFooty.com") . I'! l pick Careyin a close one .Finally, Rupertswood trek down to Como Park for theirclash against Old Geelong . Both teams are certainly notlacking in talent and this should be another entertainingcontest. Interesting to see how Rupo react after theirfirst loss of the season, especially considering that itwas against unlikely opponents, and they have a toughopponent away this week

. On the surface, Vickers-Willis looms as a key loss, but the Hoops have plenty oftalent to cover his absence, especially if Colby O'Brienand Nick Casboult continue to perform to their usualhigh standards . Old Geelong for mine .

  • May Coach of the MonthU19 - Christian Neeson (Old Melburnians - Section 2 )

Christian Neeson - Chris was appointed Coach of the Old Melburnians U19's this year in a move designed tofocus on building senior club strength through youth development . Chris has many years of experience dealingwith youth through his role as a School Teacher and also his previous roles as Operations Manager and FitnessAdviser at the Sandringham Dragons . The move has paid dividends for OM's with the side sitting unbeaten ontop of the ladder after Round 7 . Chris played junior football with Ormond before playing with Sandringham inboth the TAC Cup and VFL Competitions . He joined OM's in 1999 and retired as a player last year, moving intohis role as U19 Coach . It's great to see clubs entrusting the development of their young players to suitablecandidates within their own club, and Christian's appointment shows how successful the relationship can be .

Oakleigh on bailer M ichael Harold is the nominee for the Club Warehouse Rising StarNomination for Round 7 after his best on ground performance against St John's last Saturday .Michael, sti!l eligible for Under 19, is an extremely courageous on-bailer who can really hurt sideswith his use of the footy. Very dangerous when forward either kicking goals or setting them up!Mick Harold is seen as a future captain of Oakleigh who plays with amazing courage anddetermination . He inspires the whole team with his lack of care about his own safety . For an U19,his professional attitude and commitment to the club is very impressive and will impact the rest ofthe playing list over the next few years .

  • Round Seven was a round for the favourites. All fivesaluted . The leader is starting to take shape . Tough lotof games today.

Aquinas QC $1 .33 v La Trobe University AFC $ 3 .10Aquinas were lucky to get over the line againstWilliamstown last round . Willy led for most of the day,and Aquinas kicked six goals in eleven minutesagainst the breeze to record a nine point win . SeanLeonard was good in the ruck for Aquinas, as wereonbailers Daniel Denbraber and Leigh Toomey . LaTrobe were competitive against Peninsula butultimately fell 29 points short . No doubt Aquinas willneed to play better today, than they did last week ifthey are to get the points . Wooden could be due for abag of goals for Aquinas, and I think they will get thepoints . ; am not sure where the goals will come fromfor La Trobe . 4ey will need big games from Coulterand Pruscino . Aquinas by 23 points

nth pi^,,s tenth today at Hoe Park, and if Willyr nnot g, the points today, their season is doomedand they will be playing D3 next season

. They wereunlucky last round (as they have been in m .--yrounds) but the bottom line is that they did notregister the win, NicGuiness was on fire in themidfield, and Wheeler was providing a great target upforward, but they did not receive much help

. The Hoeswere competitive all day against Werribee, and couldhave nearly pinched the win

. Chris Traeger and MattWilson were outstanding all day in defence, andforward Dave Nielson marked strongly, and convertedthree majors . Traeger probably gets the job onWheeler _-,day . Hoes by 19 points .

C $2 .1 0Big game for Salesian at Bosco Street today . Theywere lucky to get the points over Glen Eire with a goalby Ivan Bobetic on his non preferred foot with twentyseconds left in the match putting them in front andgiving them the four points . Andrew Campbell wasgood all day for Salesian as was Singh of the half backline and Bonnicci on the ball . Werribee did enough todefeat Ivanhoe Assumption by 40 points but will needto play better today to get the points

. I expect anothergood game from Andrew Tedesco today, but I expect

Salesian to get the fourpoints by 7 points .

St John's c ~Glen Eira I,G ;_ ._ 3The Joc's will be happy to be back at Thomas CarrollReserve today, and they know that if they lose todaythey will be brought back into the relegation scrap .Kane Arnold has been playing well all year, and willneed another good performance today if the Joc's areto scrape over the line . Glen Eire have had combinedlosses of one and two points in the past two rounds, and are due for a change of luck here . Brad Clementsand Luke Pryde impressed in their two point loss toSalesian, and if these two can hold their orm, expectGlen Eira to be more than competitive today. Shouldbe a fiery clash today, with a lot at stake for bothclubs . Could be a kick in it either way . Joc's by 4points .
