P altrv winter conditions prevailed at Amateur foot-hail venues again over the weekend as six team s

played their parting piece of football for season 1997,while the remaining four attempted to fine tune theirengines in the lead-up to September action. Well, make that five teams, because throughout the after-noon, La Salle battled to overcome St Bernards inthe hope that Old Haileybury might slip up at hometo Trinity and thus vacate fourth spot .

Ultimately, the Bloods did vacate fourth - movingahead to third after seeing off Trinity, and leavingfourth spot to Collegians, whose indifferent formcontinued at the weekend with a 39 point defeat toOld Scotch at Elsternvrick Park. Leigh Carlson mustbe concerned - after seemingly cruising for most ofthe season, the Lions have only just qualified - andthe form they carry into today's first semi final clashwith hlaileybury is but a shadow of their true poten-tial. With the loser of today's match joining the also-rans for season 1997, is there time enough for theLions to find their roar ?

While conditions at Elsternwick Park might bestbe described as trying, spare a thought for the hope-lessly exposed souls at the Junction Oval - subjectto a blowy gale and teeming rain again this weekwhich marred the Redlegs' clash with Xaverians - atleast from the premiers' point of view - as they lost bya goal . Nick Bourke would have preferred nothingbetter than to take some winning form into the fmalsbut Xavs finished up in top spot regardless, a healthypercentage break ahead of second-placed Scotch . Thesecond semi-final between these two teams next weekpromises to be a beauty . Just 9 majors for the dayfrom both sides with Dan Richardson kicking all fourof Xavs' goals while experienced OM's campaignersRichard Webb and Cam Thompson helped the homeside hang on for the win . A game out with a healthypercentage, the Redlegs will be ruing their draw withHaileybury a number of weeks back .

Another side left ruing will be De La Salle, whosepoor start to the season ultimately crippled theirbelated effort to take part in September action . WithEvans, Toohey and Jackson leading the way againlast weekend . De La Salle should start season 1998with fresh vigour and confidence in its playing per-sonnel after turning around a season seemingly gone .

Their opponents last weekend, St Bernards, alsohave some optimism with which to view next year .Nick Mitchell's return mid-season bolstered theside's confidence and added vigour to their attackwhile the likes of the Gollants, Comito and Perrettkeep on coming .

University, too, will be looking to next year with

enthusiasm . GrantWilliams has provedto be an importantcomponent in theBlues' make-up and his role in their mid-seascrevival cannot be understated, but it is the likesRichard Furphy an d Paul Fairbank, prominent ithe Blues win over Old Paradians last weekend, wt,drive the University engine.

Which leaves Paradians, and their grand fm;nemesis of 1996, Old Trinity, to relegation stakes ftseason 1998 after contrasting season which finishein the same place . Parade started brightly annotched up some early victories before tapering owhile the T's, promising in the early rounds btunable to notch up a win, lost confidence as the seeson progressed . No doubt both teams will be morthan a handful in B-section next year.

PREVIEW

If past encounters carry any bearing on today'game, expect the Lions to take this game by thscruff of the neck and shake the life out of a haplesHaileybury. In both clashes this season, Collegianhave got away to a good started and gone on to wtthe game, with Christian Davidson's 7 goals playin,a big part in the round 4 win at Tucker Road . A 7 goasharp shooter helped the Lions over the line on Jul12, too, this time Drew Warne-Smith, who has established himself as the Lions key forward target with ~good return of 56 goals this year. Matt ArmstrongMark Seeeull and Gary Phillips all played well thaday for the Bloods, particularly after quarter time, buan 8 goal to 2 first quarter left the Bloods chasing taiall afternoon for a 38-point loss .

Of course, previous clashes between the two cornbatants have absolutely no bearing on today's gameexcept perhaps to give the Lions some confidence thathey can actually beat the Bloods . And don't theineed a shot of confidence, too after some ordinar}performances in recent weeks . Skipper Dann3Thomson an d Matt Galbraith both return to thfLions team this week, a double-pronged boost to theteam's on-field leadership and strength in the mid•field and or. the ball . And the Lions might just havethe edge on the ball, with Brett Jefferson in goodform in recent weeks and the rugged Darren Petersexpected to lift .

The Bloods' forward line is resourceful, ratherthan potent . Andre w Walden has distinguished him-self around goals this year while Efstathiou, Moreyand co . are more than capable of slotting throughmajors when they're most needed . The Lions too havea number of goalkickers in their midst, and the like s

2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 1997

Page 5: The Amateur Footballer, Week 20, 1997

of yori Phillips and Scott Mollard will be on hand toease the pressure on Warne-Smith . With JeffLemon, Tony Parkin, and Gabe Deane-Johns allcapable of running forward and kicking goals, theLions' scoring potential seems ominous .

But `seems is the operative word. Ominous mightbe their potential, but ordinary has been their form- the Lions might struggle to find winning touchagainst a Bloods team which has shown plenty ofresilience throughout the year . Chris Kraus, DavidConne ll , Ash Hilton and Matt Armstrong have allbeen consistent performers in 1998 and will no doubtbe desperate again today to prove Haileybury'sknockers wrong . But I suspect the Lions might justfind a touch of polish today, particularly if good con-ditions prevail, but expect the Bloods to go downvaliantly with one mighty fight . Coll egians by 11points.

Old Haileybury - All at Old Haileybury AFCwould like to extend belated congratulations to MarkSeccull on achieving 100 games for the club recent-ly . We all hope the next ( 100) are as good .

iie last day for the home and away matches wa sI just about the dirtiest day of the year weatherwise .

High scores were certainly not the order of the day buttwo very keen tussles took place at Oak Park andChelsworth Park with the fourth place on the ladder upfor grabs . SKOBS' fightback against Old Ivanhoe putan end to the finals hopes of Therry Penola who didnot help their own cause by falling at the last hurdlewhen Ivanhoe arrived to spoil things. As expectedOrmond, Old Brighton an d St Kilda/South Caulfieldwere the other winners in a round which had no effecton relegation and which left the four unchanged . In the'Ressies' Therry Penola somewhat compensated by itsarrival into fourth place at the expense of SOB .There are only five of the ten clubs in this section tak-ing part in finals action.

REVIEW

Old Ivanhoe continued its excellent second half ofthe season by going all the way with SKOBS andalmost winning the day after appearing to take controlof the match in the second quarter. The ruck dualbetween Marcus Olive (SKOBS) and Jarrod Weddle(Old Ivanhoe) was a magnificent encounter whilstdefender Bernie Marusic and leading goalkickerLachie McLean engaged in a great battle with theSKOBS' youngster doing a fine job . Saturday wasKevin McLean's farewell match after 13 years at thehelm at Old Ivanhoe. I'm sure everyone in Amateurfooty will congratulate Kevin on his contribution to hisclub and to the VAFA . Enjoy your golf Kevin.

Ormond were never really in strife againstMazenod who could not get sufficient use of the ballfrom the centre and again relied on its defence to holdOrmond to a reasonable score . A disappointing seasonfor the Nodders whilst the Monds appear to be goingalong nicely at the business end of proceedings .

Ban yule could not withstand the early effort of StKilda South Caulfield an d once againy came awaywithout the bacon. On the other hand the Saintsnotched up the fourth win for 1997 as both clubs bidthis Section farewell and look forward to better resultsin C Section in 1998 .

Old Brighton maintained its top position and cer-tainly let MHSOB and other hopefuls know that itregards itself as top dog and intends to go all the way .The High boys on the other hand journeyed home con-fident of turning the tables on the spaciousElsternwick Park on September 6 .

At Oak Park Ivanhoe decided to finish 1997 on ahigh and ensure that Therry Penola was left without achance of making fmals action. The Pies have had agreat second half of the season and will now look to

1998 with much confi-dence after bloodingmany youngsters.Therry on the othe rhand would be most disappointed particularly considering its pre-season confidence and last year's effortsOnce again, enough runs were not scored in the earl, part of the season .

PREVIEW

On the spacious Elsternwick Park Ormond take ;on the SKOBS. The score to this point is one all witlboth sides losing the encounters on home soil duringthe season . Much will depend on the weather and th(state of the track . With dry conditions I expect thfSKOBS to take control . On the other hand wet ancblustery conditions should be exactly how the Mond ;will like it . Based on the SKOBS' enormous record

a headquarters I expect them to dictate terms and scor eby 20 points .

In the reserves Therry Penola's recent good formsuggests it is on a roll however Old Brighton withmuch experience in key positions should win this oneby 12 points .

CORRESPONDENTS : Thanks for your contribu-tions which have made my task a most pleasant one .To those still participating in finals, keep up the goodwork on Fax 9889 9014 by 5 .30pm Monday. Reportsfrom seniors and reserves would be appreciated .

don't know why but the rain and cold always man-es to know where the finals are . It was freezing o n

Saturday at the first semi-final, but the weather did notdiminish the football at all. It was the type of game youwould expect of a final, both teams never giving in andonly a single kick separating the two combatants comethe finals siren.

REVIEWFIRST SEMI FINAL -MARCELLIN V. OLD R2ENTONIAN S

In cold, wet conditions at Parkdale Oval, Marcellincame out of the rooms breathing fire, desperate to turnaround the result two weeks earlier that saw them losesecond spot when defeated by Old Mentonlans on theirhome ground. Eagles vice-captain Caffry set the moodearly, throwing his weight around and helping his teamcontrol the proceedings in the first term . With the aid ofa swirling breeze Marcellin kicked 4 goals to thePanther's one to be up by 18 points at the first change .The Panthers again failed to fire in the second quarter, falling down across half fonvard where Stroud was pre-senting himself well, but did not have too many helpers,Acreman an d Bournon, two of the Panthers majorgoalkickers being well held by their opponents . Slatterywas standing out for Marcellin providing run out ofdefence as well as having a lot of ball around theground. The Eagles outscored the Panthers 2 goals to 1in the second term to go into half time 29 points up .

The third term was when the match really started. The Panthers moved Large into the ruck and he helpedthe Panthers to first use of the ball out in the middle aswell as around the ground and his presence seemed toget Old Mentonians going . Stroud was taking moremarks and the Panthers were starting to threaten . Theykicked three goals to the Eagles one to narrow the leadto just 20 points with one term to play.

It was all or nothing for both teams in the final term, and the both played accordingly . The Eagles looked likethey had things under control early, Cox an d Dineenkeeping the ball out of the Panthers scoring zone . Butafter five minutes the Panthers got going . Acreman, having had no impact on the game in the first threequarters, kicked his only two goals, Stroud kicked one,and then Solley slotted one to put the Panthers a goalclear. But Marcellin responded and as the lead changeda couple of times through behinds, the crowd was onthe edge of their collective seat . The play was hard, bothteams trying desperately to force a score, but with notmore than two minutes to go, Marcellin's Karavasilismanaged to snap a goal from just outside the goalsquare and put the Eagles up by five points. Not longafter, the siren blew, and the Eagles had progressed tothe next round, reversing last year's straight sets exitfrom the finals .

Both teams had a few good players, no one really

dominating the game .

LFor the Eagles, Coxand Slattery weresolid all day, whils tCaffry and Day made good contributions to their teamwin. For the Panthers, who just gave the Eagles tomuch of a start, outscoring them 7 goals to three in thsecond half, Stroud with three goals was good, as waSolley an d Darren Murphy, and when he was on thground, Large had a big impact on the game .RESERVES-FIRST SEW-FINAL,MARCELLIN V. MONASH BLUES

This was a clash between last year's D and C seclion reserves Premiers, Marcellin looking to defentheir crown. Unfortunately though it was not to be . Ian even affair, the game was won and lost in the seconterm, Monash kicking 6 goals to none to take whaturned out to be an unassailable lead . Marcellin triehard but failed to find anyone able to kick them goal ;and they now exit the finals series, their title defencover.

PREVIEW -SECOND SEMI-FINAL,ST BEDES MENTONE V. NORTH OLD BOYS

This, like the semi-final, should prove to be a closencounter, no more than three goals having separatethese teams in both their encounters during the regular season. Particular notice was taken in their rouni16 clash where the Tigers were up by 20 points in ththird term before the NOB's ran over them to take thgame . I doubt the Tigers will be as willing to surrendethis week, a place in the Grand-Final, and 'B' grade astake . But North Old Boys too would be keen to win, bget back into 'B' grade and prove their performances iiour section this year were not ones that can be repeated next year in 'B' .

North are a proven running side, their enduranoand pace over the ground a key to their victories . Theidefence is also very solid, and their attack averaged ove20 goals a game this season . The Tigers also average(over 20 goals a game and their endurance will also p1a,a part on the expanses at Sandringham Oval .

I think it will come down to whoevers mid-field i:able to take control . On a large ground first use of thiball, and the ability to control the direction of play wildecide the winner.

I'm going for the Tigers.

RESERVES -SECOND SEMI-FINAL,ST BEDES ME NTONE V. NORTH OLD BOYS

It seems we have not only the best two sides playinlthis week, but the best two clubs . In the Reserves how

t~ver it is a different story . St Bedes Mentone managedto go the entire season without a loss, the one blemishbeing achaz'acter building draw early in the season .North Old Boys on the other hand lost five matches, some being to lowly teams, and they were unable tocontrol the Tigers in both their encounters this season .The Tigers have been the yardstick in reserves footballthis year, and I think that will continue today.

the day started and ended in drama . The on fieldresults and display of sportsmanship and disci-

plined football by all four teams in atrocious condi-tions was a credit to themselves and in turn theAssociation . For two sides to lose by the narrowest ofmargins is disappointing for their supporters and hasbeen said many times there unfortunately can only beone winner. Too the performance of Old Essendon, whose whole season has been mothballed in twoweeks with losses to the seniors (knocking them fromfourth) and now the reserves after last Saturday, Iextend congratulations on consolidating in D Sectionand your efforts after promotion from E Section lastseason . To Parkside, whose chances of promotionback to 'C' are gone with their two point loss, youshowed in the disappointment of defeat and the yourseason in tatters, a display of maturity and sports-manship that many other clubs should take a leaffrom. As they left the field they went to theirWhitefriars opponents and the umpires and officialsof the day shook hands and wandered to the rooms .The shattered players sat in the rooms heads bowedsurrounded by supporters and deathly silence . Theirpresident spoke, softly at first, his voice affected byemotion but his words will ring in the minds of allpresent as a slow clap turned to a standing ovationfor the efforts of players and coaching staff. Theirsportsmanship after the game and display even indefeat extends the name and standing of ourAssociation . To the days dramas when the CreswickAmbulance services ferried the only serious injury onthe day to the doctors for surgery . There must be abetter way to get a hair cut than attempt to use theserrated edge of a paper towel dispenser . GoalUmpires go to any length to be noticed and then thelazarous return to the goals by half time what aneffort .

A reminder to all supporters that in the emotionof battle and support for your team, barracking andsome abuse from over the fence is part of our game .When the battle is over no supporters or officials arepermitted to approach umpires at any stage . Youhave ruined a great day and tarnished your clubsname, spoiling the great efforts of your players andthe officials of the day.REVIEW OF LAST WEEKS 1ST SEMI FINAL

RESERVE SOld Essendon and Parkside were involved in a

battle royal'e and as each quarter rolled by no onewould confidently predict the outcome . Old Essendonseemed fitter, had a higher level of skill and were dourin defence holding Parkside scoreless in the first eventhough they had most of the play . On three occasionsOEGS have moved the ball forward and converted .Parkside continued to apply pressure at every contestholding OEGS to only one goal in the second but still

not able to get the major on the board . Parkside in it,third made some telling moves which saw their efforlfinally rewarded as during the last half they levelethe scores . With 10 minutes to play and the scoreleveled both sides tried desperately to get the ball owthe score line. A point to Parkside and the soundinsiren finished a great game of Reserves footy whicwill see the winner meeting today's loser at Parkdalnext week. Nothing separated the Parkside and Whitefriarteams in an absolutely dour struggle for the ball wit :no player giving an inch . Whitefriars tried hard tdominate but the conditions brought their art(supremacy back to the field and Parkside were betteat ground level . Wasted opportunities saw both sidestruggle across their half forward lines and the usuewinning players with both clubs held fairly well btheir respective opponents . Parkside had theichances to win and none more so than a shot at gorfrom directly in front which was badly needed anwent begging in the last which leveled the scores wit]the resulting behind . Whitefriars forced the ball forward and a loose ball in the goal square and aiattempt to kick it off the ground saw it slew througlfor a point to give them a one point margin with !minutes to go . in Round 16 the result was reversed as was the stateof the game with OGS playing catch up footy beforeBeauy ran out winners by 32 points . Todays gamewlll be no different with each team looking to break11e~ early and then maintain the ascendancy as theday progresses . Beaumaris will want Martin, Groves, galisbury, Easton an d McManus to produce all day, s OGS rely on Darcy, Neeld, Mithens, Edmondsand 'rilson to produce with Howells, D Section lead-;ng goalkicker, capping off their forward thrusts . Ip; ict OGS will just get up by 15 points in whatore uses to be an outstanding game .

7VESOld Geelong take on Whitefriars who have been

the leaders all year in the reserves and finished twog;vnes clear on top. They are consistent performerswho should run out comfortable winners movingstrai,ht into the Grand Final .

I have been advised by nquinas that all looks wellfor next year and althoir, i not playing last week itwas great to see them enjoying the fmals along withSt Johns and a mingling of players from other clubsnot involved last week .

On a sadder note Aquinas have four players whobetween them total 600 games of football retiring,M ichael VanKerKaven, David Phelan, Steve Kennyan d Liam King - great supporters, players and onfield performers for various reasons will not be avail-able next season . Thanks for your service to Aquinas.nd congratulations on your brilliant individual

Kew were too strong for Richmond Central atwindy, raining, hailing and occasionally sunny CentralReserve last Sunday . It was a dog of a day for footballof any code, and the players of both sides are com-mended for being able to play at the standard they did .Kew set up a 29 point lead in the first term and werenever in trouble thereafter. Central weren't able to pen-etrate Kew's defence for any majors at the scoring endin the second term . Bell, Pedretti, tw-en lli andCracknell turned Centrals back time and again, andmaintained that effort all day with long, well directedkicks into their own attacking zone . Kew s captain,Brian Cullen also put in a superb game, with his paceand precise disposals . Central's best also put in asuperb game, with precise disposals . RESERVESOld Carey overcame an indifferent start to beat

Richmond Central in truly hypothermic conditions.Things didn't look good for the C's when they wereoutscored in the first term kicking to the windwardend. But they rallied and took a one point lead into thelong break, with gritty, determined, wet weather tac-tics . The winning break came for the C's when they rat-tled on 3 goals in 3 minutes in the middle of the thirdterm, Central never conceded, but couldn't overcomethat margin . For the C's, Ian Cohen was in great formruck roving, I£el Shrives was solid at FB, RowanBardwell controlled the central muddy bit, Mick Cannrucked well, and Simon Jackson was in the middle ofevery pack all day. Central had good players in SeanO'Sullivan, rucking, Jack Auldist, both ends of theground, and Neil Bowe, roving.

Old Carey received a very cold bath from a very hotI' Valley OB's in losing its first game since April

down the C's strikers, and constantly drove the bainto their own scoring zone . There, the smaller, mobilYarra on-ballers and flankers ran, tackled, smotheretand hassled the ball forward into the opportunitareas, and converted, something the C's could neaccomplish . Yarra was everything the C's wererifocused, first to the ball, backing each other up, ancommunicating, all of which combined, enabled thetto triumph over the mega-ugly weather, and a disalpointing Old Carey . ri3ptt 1i Tg{ng, BraDowns, I Vhlte and : c . all nad fieldavs in roles as flankers and on ballers, whi~:'i'.`ra r had a very effective game at fuback . RESERVESYarra Valley won a good game against Kew wit

victory possible to either side until Yarra kicked d,sealer at the 20 minute mark of the last term.

U then it was nip and tuck all day, with neither able iestablish a sustainable break on the other . The dfffe:ence in the last quarter was Yarra having Paul Marticome off the bench . Paul suffered a horrendous brokeleg two seasons back, and it was great to see hiireturning to football. He kicked two goals in the laterm and had a hand in the sealer, so it was a tellircome back . For the Bush Rangers, Ashley Rowe getcrated many attacks from his flank, as did DaviBalshaw, Tony Crean and Tim Gentle, and a speci ;mention for David Potter, who led the defence brillianly all day. Old Carey and Kew meet in the penultimate segame for this year . The C's will be out to reverse laweek's form lapse, and Kew will want to show wh,thev ve believed in all year, that they are the best sicin the section. This will be a contest between Kewexperience, solidity, and marking power, versus the Cbundle of pace, precision kicking, and swoopirswitches . And the weather and state of the ground whave a lot to do with the result. The C's are a better s

As is s+often the case Dooley provided the catalyst whibSouerby, Neville .:?,_ were all damagingFor Williamstown was able to geplenty of the ball after being sent back to the lasline while Wilson and the _ aaad brothers foughhard against the tide .

regroup from such a comprehensive defeat an(will struC ° against a North Brunswick outfithat is growing ever hungrier for the chance tcavenge their'95 Grand Final defeat at the hands oa different bunch of students . The key will be

t North back line who face the unlikely task of hol ding the CY's forwards for a second week in a rowThe conditions will have a big impact too with Willpraying for a return to the weather that theenjoyed across an undefeated home and away season . On the flip of a coin I'm going for North timaintain the momentum of last Sunday and geover the line by 5 points .

The ressies is less difficult with Willi an(Blacks clearly the best sides all year and the CY :keen to get another crack at their nemesis . UnReds will still be feeling the effects of their bruising Sunday encounter and with only six days t<recover they'll go down by 35 points .

e prevailing weather conditions last weekendreduced the 1st round of finals to a real'slog' . Early

bookings were made into the Grand Finals by Southbank(Seniors) an d Oakleigh (Reserves) and mothballs forPower House and St Mary's respectively.

Competing teams in this weeks Preliminary Finalsshould be more adept to handling any nervous tension, even though the stakes are extremely high. That being thecase, the ingredients are there to make for a spectatorsdelight with exciting and entertaining matches in bothgrades.

REVIEW OF 2ND SEMI FINALSENIORS

St Pat's aided by a considerable breeze failed to fullycapitalise and with Southbank's defence proving a toughnut to crack, the Patters went to the break narrow lead-ers. The Bankers quickly assumed control in the secondquarter and at one stage threatened to'open' the game up,however St Pat's dug deep and fought back hard to trailby just 9 points at the long interval . The third quarterproved to be a carbon copy of the 2nd but in reverse modewith St Pat's the attackers and Southbank the defenders .It was only the last 5 minutes that Southbank was able tostem the tide and reduce the Patters fate and despite 2late goals the Bankers got home narrow 8 point victors .Hats off to all players . however those worthy of specialmention were Mozza, Nuggett and Bryce for Southbankan d C . Sullivan, Davies and Sebire for St Pats.

RESERVESSouthbank's 18 match winning sequence was halted

by an aggressive and determined Oakleigh . The Krushersaided by the inclusion of several regular senior playerswere able to exert pressure on the Bankers for the lsttime this season . Southbank failed to test with inexcus-able turnovers and simple basic errors. They will howev-er, learn from the experience and with the inclusion ofsome of their own key players provide much stiffer oppo-sition on the rebound . Full credit to Oakleigh for pursu-ing a goal, never giving in and for displaying great teamspirit . You're now entitled to flag favouritism . Krusherswere particularly well served by Jabba, Ferguson andMalpanis whilst Boffa, Damo an d Macca rated a mentionfor Southbank.

REVIEW OF 1ST SEMI FINAL

SENIORSPower House started in a very aggressive fashion and

were hard at it, but not hard enough at the ball . Thisapproach had no effect at all on the Pirates who stuck totheir game plan and even though kicking into the breezein the opening term all but had the game won at the shortbreak . The next 3 stanza's were a mere procession asPeninsula did as they liked and honed their skills for theweeks ahead. The House just could not get their game

going all day and a season that promised much ended ora very disappointing and sombre note. It was a great leaneffort by the Pirates with Sharpin outstanding, ably supported by Marshall and IaicLorinan who rucked tirelessly after the early loss of Aitchison. The House must havffelt no one was worthy of mention as we did not hear fronthem.

RESERVESIn atrocious conditions which included a hail storn

the younger Pirates were able to withstand all thrown athem by the more experienced Sainters to record a vengood victory and the right to challenge the vanquish

e Bankers in the Prelim. Better players for the victors werfBarclay, Bradon and Bowman while the Saints failed t~find the fax number while wallowing in their disappointment.

PREVIEWST PAT'S MENTONE V. PENINSULA

These two protagonists have had a couple of stirrin~battled between themselves already this year . St Pats haviwon on both occassions, narrowly though by 10 pointand 8 points respectively.

Similarly, their positions on the premiership laddethroughout the season were never separated by mor+than a game. These 2 factors truly reflect how evenl, matched the teams are. The Pirates are probably a littl, more 'brilliant' if allowed space to use their speed an(skill, whilst St Pat's rate higher on the scale in terms cmatching up, close checking and aggression . On oureckoning both teams will be without a couple of key players as a result of injuries sustained last week . Weatheand ground conditions will also have a bearing on matteras to will the extent of the aforementioned injuries.

KB 1s at a total loss to be able to confidently predicthe outcome of this anticipated'epic' encounter other thaito suggest that 1) Peninsula's greater depth allows thento better cover injuries (see above) and 2) Peninsula has ,psychological high' as a result of their mammoth 1st serrfinal win.

I will more than likely be proved wrong, however Pselect the Pirates to win by 12 points and advance to th'big one to meet Southbank .

The Brain is also in a quandary here as to which wa;to go and who to select and why. There are a lot of ifs anbuts to it all. The Pirates will have gained lots of conBdence from their big win while maybe the Vultures wihave lost some after giving their all but not quite bringinhome the bacon . Just to be different to my fellow scriband fearless leader fll tip the Vultures but only just ingreat game.

ents to the senior game but the victo-nd inning mat 'ns recorded by ', :u; k hav ea L de more convincing. If you can have a`good' lossthe one incurred by the 'Bankers' at the hands of

h last week was probably it! Lessons learned, the>ian of some key players back from injury and an

rving promise to each other to accept nothing les s. success should be enough to propel Southbank into3rand Final . I do though expect this game to be close-

K c ntested and hard fought to the end with the Bankersng the spoils by 13 points. The Bankers have a lot of pride and it is at stake here

they were stung by their loss last week and whilstnowledging that the Pirates are a good side TB tip s

Southbank to win and to join their mates in the big one .

e finals series gets fully underway this weekendwith A td B grade joining in . Umpires' Corner

.wishes all teams remaining in the hunt the best intheir endeavours for the flag . Good luck to allumpires (field, boundary and goal) who have finalsappointments this weekend. As with the players, thefinals are the highlight of the season for umpires .

SPIRIT OF THE LAW - ADVANTAGEThis weekend we look at law 12 .2.1 and the spirit

in which it should be interpreted . This law is one of themore difficult to get right, due to the split-secondjudgement to be made in summing up whether there isan advantage or not. So what does the Spirit of theLaws state (source-VFL umpiring department publica-

tion) :"The ball shall be kept in motion by permitting the

team offended against to take advantage, provided playIs continuous" . Advantage can only apply to a free kick .

It cannot apply to a mark .A guide as to whether play is continuous is that the

outcome of the play would have been the same had thewhistle not been blown . To implement this well, umpires need to be alert for possible advantage playsin the following circumstances:

'when the ball is loose ;*when the team offended against has possession of

the ball;*an advantage call can be cancelled and the set

play awarded if such call was not to the advantage ofthe team offended against.' The telecommunication providers would havebeen happy last weekend (and the one before) with thenumber of mobile phones being used throughout the

day at different VAFA venues . This enabled quickupdates on other critical games effecting clubs' finalpositions . Umpires Corner is not sure whom Brendan

Allen (young 'B' grade umpire on the rise) was callingthough. Could it have been a female friend seen withhim during recent weeks?

Bernie Dix (Goal Umpire) was preparing for the 'D'Reserve Ist semi fmal at Central Reserve in the chang-erooms last weekend when he accidentally smashed

and cut his head . Bernie was immediately ordered off

to hospital under the blood rule, to receive stitches .

Meanwhile a Parkside'clubbie took over the flags untilBernie's return midway through the second quarter inthe true Anzac spirit of our goalies.

Andrea Flack may be known in future for innova-tive umpiring clothing trends . Also at Central tResl neon the weekend, Andrea was seen wearing the gsleeved whites to protect against the bitter cold windsof "Arctic Park" .

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?It was great to catch up with Peter 'Digger'

Wiseman when he made his annual appearance at thePre-Finals' dinner. A true CoAin.gwaod man, Diggerlooks as though he could still be running in the mid-dle. He umpired in the VAFA for many years, mostly in'A Grade including a number of big finals. Rated bymany as the best umpire they saw, his communicationskills and playing experience were nearly as invaluableas 'that voice' . Nowadays 'Digger' spends Saturdayafternoons watching Mazenod O .C . out near home asthe quiet observor or the Pies at the 'G' in the AFLmatches.

SOCIAL NOTESPeter and Kath Keogh are looking forward to a

busy pre-season with a baby due in early 1998 .Congratulations to you both but'Rags' you didn't haveto take on the pregnant look yourself.

Coming social events include the 'N Grade GrandFinal 'day and night' in the new rooms on 21September and the Presentation Night at Tudor

Court Receptions on 26 September. Will we see the

return of the traditional 'C' Grade Grand Final

'Presidents Fridge on 13 September? Stay tuned.

Spider would Be to apologise for the very briefUmpires' Corner last weekend. It may have somethingto do with having to write the column the morning afterthe Pre-Finals dinner.

VALEOn a sad note, Umpires, Corner (on behalf of all

VAFA umpires, advisors and observers) sends its deep-est sympathy to John Hall and Tremayne Jenkins

(and Mark) on the recent passing away of both their

fathers. Our thoughts are with both families at this sad

time. John would like to thank all umpires who woreBRblack arm bands as a sign of respe~llast O weekend .

he curtain fell on another season last Sunday,. after Grand Finals played in weather, which

seemed more appropriate to the mid-season than to"the first careless rapture of spring" .

Selection wise I ended the season on a high note, tipping the two premier sides, each of whom was theleader in its section throughout the season .

REVIEW OF BLADES BOOTS GRAND FINALS

SECTION 1 OLD XAVERIANS V. OLD BRIGHTONBLOOD S

Victory to Old Xaverlans by fifteen points gavethem back to back premierships . The first quarterwas evenly contested as each side strove to gain theascendancy . Low scoring again seemed likely as therewere only five scoring shots for the quarter, at the endof which Old Xaverians held a six point lead . The sec-ond quarter proved to be the highest scoring one ofthe match as Old Brighton Bloods with MalcolmShippen doing well up forward played their best foot-ball to add four goals . On the other hand OldXaverians proved their talent by adding three goalsagainst the wind. At half time another upset seemedpossible as Old Brighton Bloods led by the minimummargin . In the third quarter Old Xaverians respondedto coach Matt Tyrrell's pleading and added threegoals while restricting Old Brighton Bloods inaccura-cy when shooting for goal prevented Old Xaveriansfrom holding a bigger lead than sixteen points atthree quarter time .

Once again the stage seemed set for an excitingfinish . However reality was that scoring remainedminimal in the last quarter, with a total of five scores, added during it . Old Brighton Bloods were able toscore only twice in the last quarter and as in the sec-ond semi final, they failed to play out a consistentfour quarters . At the final siren, the premiership cupbelonged to Old Xaverians, who won by fifteen points .

Old Brighton Bloods were again best served byGerard Bennett who is touted as the likelyFisher/ Mason medallist. Others to do well includedMarcus Barber, and Matthew McLennan whoenjoyed a great final's series.

Congratulations to Old Xaverians, who wentthrough the season, undefeated on the ground (theironly loss of points was through an administrativeerror) .

SECTION 2 KEW V. SYNDAL TALLY HO

Unlike the second semi final, Kew led SyndalTall y Ho at each change and despite their scorelesslast quarter, Kew won their third Club XVIII premier-ship, by six points .

Weather condi-tions, ~plus the unac-

ground size _customedmeant scoring wa sdifficult. Kew opened the better but failed to capital-ize on the wind so that at quarter time they clung toa seven point lead .

Syndal Tally Ho, also proved incapable of kickinga high score as Kew held them to a single scoring shot(a goal) during the second quarter . On the other handKew were able to score four times which enabledthem to hold a nine point lead at half time .

Scoring didn't increase during the third quarteras Kew added the only goal kicked by the other team .They also added four behinds to three kicked bySyndal Tally Ho . Thus at the last change Kew led bysixteen points .

The premiership still had to be won as the lastquarter started. Tiredness set in as players strove togain the ascendancy. The Syndal Tally Ho defendersand on ballers did their share as they held Kew score-less for the quarter. However their forwards failed tocapitalize on their opportunities as one goal from fivescoring shots was not a good result. Straighter kickedwould have given the 1997 debutantes a premiershipin their first season. Kew determinedly clung to theirslight leAd of six points, which they maintained untilthe final siren . Once again Kew had good players inCraig Johnson, Paul Corridon, Mick guinn andMick Garoffolo.

Kew are to be congratulated on their pennant wonunder the leadership of Mick O'Dea (Coach) andFrank Guppy (the man who did everything).

I now conclude my twelfth successive season ofwriting this column on the Club XVIII whose formatchanged this season and for whom our ChiefExecutive Officer has written season 1998 will becontested under different conditions .

Thanks to my army of readers, whose weeklyperusal of the column gives satisfaction to the author .Also to Sue an d Angela at Elsternwick Park who havebeen unfailing in their tolerance of and assistancewith my erratic deliver of copy .

I once again look forward to the invitation to writeagain in Season 1998 .

BLADES PLAYER OF GF'S : Michael Collopy(Old Xaverians) and Peter McCormick (Kew) kickedthe first goal of their respective grand finals and theirteam won the match . Peter and Michael win for theirefforts a pair of Blades football boots. Each is askedto ring Peter Warner from Blades ( 9889 9222) toarrange collection of their prize.

Review - Fi , f =I-FSection 1

At Trinity playing fields last week a fired up OldParadians bounced out of the blocks to lead well atquarter time with Porteous and Talarico prominent, however by half time Old Carey had clawed their wayback to trail by a bit over a kick. Oppy and S. Woodwere doing well however the OP's prime movers inVentura an d Pruscino were equally as damaging. It allcame down to the "premiership" quarter and while nei-ther team added a goal the OP's had control for most ofthe quarter and the momentum had definitely swungtheir way . Although leading by only (9) points the OP'sclicked up a gear in the final term to win by (17) andadvance through to the preliminary final next week.Smith, Stevens and Warren were also prominent forthe OP's, while the OC's were well served by Battle, T.Wood and Hawkins .

Section 2Old Scotch an d University Blacks on paper

looked to be a terrific contest, and with a win apieceneither team held any sort of significant psychologicaladvantage over the other. This would change quite sig-nificantly, as the first quarter was all Old Scotchadding (3) goals while keeping the Blacks goalless . Infact the Blacks could well have seen themselves in witha chance come half time, but failed to capitalise ontheir good second quarter efforts with (6) points to trailat half time by almost (3) goals . Junkeeer, Thompsonan d Crane were in everything for the Scotchies, andwith Gross and Hawkins dangerous up fonvard theylooked like taking the game over, and they did . Byadding (6) second half goals while holding the Blacksgoalless for the match the Scotchies won easily toadvance to meet the loser of Collegians and Whitefriarswho play off in the second-semi final today . Betterplayers for the Blacks on a day that would best be for-gotten were Mellings, Peck, Costello and Byrne.

Section (2) Blu eAJAX carried their most recent form into their

first-semi final against NtF1SOB last Saturday confidentthat they could register their first win against MHSOBfor the season when it most counted, and they did justthat . An even first half saw both teams use the breezeeffectively and with the High being well served bySharpies, Burke an d Norman, both teams were onlyseparated by (6) points at the main break . The Jackas'key players in Blashki, Dukes and yteross werebattling hard and their efforts were being rewarded

with good conversionin front of goal in theblustery conditions. Ina third quarter thatwas tight and tense the High added (5) goals to theJack-as (3) to hold a slim lead going into the last qu,^r-ter . However it was the Jackas who ran away booting(8) goals to (1) to run over the tiring MHSOB . Golvanwas on fire up forward with (5) majors and withRosenbaum and Bock consistent performers all t ythe Jackas finished the better team to keep their finalshopes alive . For the High better players for the daywere Wilson, Downes an d Stirling .

Section (2) RedWell Aquinas were outplayed from go to whoa last

Saturday when St . Leos Emmaus jumped out ofthe blocks comprehensively . With (22) shots to (8) athalf time the Bloods were looking down the barrel, asthe Two Blues with Willis, Morel and Cashen on firebegan to run harder and stronger . The Bloods' worstfears were realised in the second half with the TwoBlues doing as they pleased to run out convincing win-ners, with M anton, McCann an d Bonnici dominant ina strong team effort from the Two Blues .

Previews - 2nd Semi-FinalsSection 1

In the clash of traditional rivals Old Xaverians andUni . Blues the score this year stands at (2) wins to theXavs . In Round 6 they won a tight contest by (9) points, but clearly outpointed the Blues in Round 14 whenthey won by over (7) goals. Both sides score at will andthe defences of each team will be working overtimetoday. The Xavs prime movers in Webb, Jones, Irelandan d Healy will need to be watched along with Nisbettand Fleming. The Xavs will also be mindful of the factthat players such as Carom, Cobbledick, Fricker andSturrock on their day can be matehwinners, alongwith fine team players in Eastaugh, Kelly and Terrill .Both teams appear evenly matched and conditionsmay well play a big part, but the Xavs must startfavourites here todav.

Selection: Old XaveriansSection 2

Collegians take on itefriars at II .30am atTrinity playing fields and with a win apiece to datetoday shapes as a great battle between two very talent•ed teams . The Lions possess strong onballers and goal-kickers and the Friars will be keen to stifle the influence that Van Der Venne, Florentine and Baxter wilhave along with other key players in BrownChampion and Moll . Not to be outdone the Friar :

THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 199

Page 37: The Amateur Footballer, Week 20, 1997

,ill approach this match full of confidence with Davis,j,~inch, Winterburn and Phan all capable of matching,,inning performances and in fine touch . Add to thisimpressive list players such as Crough, Reid andS-e -ches and you have a real even match . Both teamsgnovr the importance of this clash and in what somemay admit will be an upset the Friars will gain firstr ight of entry in the Section (2) Grand Final in (2) weekstime.selection: Whitefriars

Section ( 2) BlueSt. Bedes Mentone Tigers will approach their

, ateh with Ormond full of confidence knowing theyhave defeated the Monds on both occasions this sea-son. However they will be well aware that finals are adifferent story and to go through the season undefeat-ed is a fine achievement, but to lose this final will meana tough road to get to the Grand Final . Both teamsscore well, with the Tigers obviously more potent inattack than the Monds and the game could well comedown to how well the Tigers forwards are allowed toplay. The Monds must be mindful of Kingwell andWintle up forward, as well as Ryan, McShane, Gangiand Falkingham. While the Tigers will need to beaware that B ro wn, Ashford, Byron, Thompson an dCullen will all play a big role if the Monds are toadvance straight to the Grand Final. While the Mondschallenged the Tigers in their last meeting the Tigersmust start favourites today and should win by (2)straight kicks .

-jo- , ; _J _ e

Selection: St . Bedes Mentone Tigers

Section (2) RedYarra Valley and Old Trinity do battle today for

the right of direct entry into the Section (2) Grand Finalin (2) weeks time . With a win apiece each team will beexpecting to win this encounter given fine conditionsshould prevail, and going on each team's record to dateeither team could start favourite . The Valley will relyheavily on Tyshing, T & B Wapshot, Laing, Telfordan d Reynolds, whereas the OT's have strong perform-ers in Butler, Newman, Natoli and Ramsden. Bothteams have been the (2) outstanding teams of the sec-tion and with both teams possessing hard runningonballers and strong marking key forwards the matchcould go either way. Each team will be well aware ofeach other's strengths and will plan to combat theseearly on . The match should be one of high quality, where the Valley will get the points and the OT's left toponder a preliminary final berth .

Selection: Yarra Valley

5 YEARS AGO - 1992

-ollegians went into the A Section Grand Finalwhen they outplayed De La in the first term to lead

by 16 points at the first change. De La kept on "catch-ing up" and looked a chance in the final quarter butRick Schober steadied the defence and the Lions wonby 14 points. Best were Stephen Mount (7 goals), GaryIrvine, Mark Hibbins, Matt Galbraith, Rick Schoberand Tony Wallace (Coll.) while for De La AndrewRonchi . John Tully and Chris Campbell were best .

Best and fairest winners were : 'A' Paul Matton(Therry) 15, 'B' David Rogers (Old Trin .) 22, 'C'Robert Lawson (Fawk.) 23, 'D' John Manton (OldGeel .) 20, 'E' Mark Ladgrove (Doveton) and MannyNicolisi (ANZ) 17, 'F' John Jackson (WestBrunswick) 23 .

The celebrations were long and hard at Brightonon Saturday night when Old BrightonGrammarians won their first ever promotion to 'A'Section when they went right away from OldMelburnians in the second half to win the secondsemi final, 14.11 to 7 .6 . Best were A. Rickarby, T.Hoar, M . Hendrie, C . Lade (Old Melb.) .

What a season for Mazenod who won the 'D'Section flag from fourth position . Three points downat the last change, they kicked 4.2 to CaulfieldGrammarians 2 .4 to win by 7 points . Caulfieldprobably lost the game in the third quarter, when, although well in control, they scored only 3 goalsfrom 12 scoring shots . Best were D . Barker, S.Noble, J . Mannix, A. Rogers . W. Marshall, T.Chilcott (Maz) and C . Simpson, D . Cromer, T. Royals(C .G) .

In U 19(1) second semi final Old Xaverians werefar too strong for De La Salle Blue, winning 7 .8 to3 .2 . Best were L . Fay, S. Barlow, A. Egan, M . Dillon(Old Xav .) and C . Lester, J . Taylor, P. Clancy (De La).

10 YEARS AGO - 1987

Old Xaverians and Ormond lined up in the sec-ond semi. Ormond's only two losses for the seasonwere to Old Xaverians . The AF's tipsters Ross Boothand Peter French tipped Old Xaverians. At quartertime things looked black for the tipsters - O .X. hadkicked a solitary point to the Monds 3 .4 . From thenon it was all Old Xaverians, final scores 15 .11 to8 .13 .

Dermott Dann (wing), Peter Curtain (h .b .),Danny Meagher (roving) and Nick Wilton (c .h .b)were the best in a very even Old Xavs team . Russell

Barnes was desper-ate, Scott Taylor wasenergetic, Brad Nash ---held Steve Curtain to3 goals - the balance of the Ormond team was dis-appointing.

In a real thriller neighbours St Bernards andTherry played the administrators 'nightmare', a see-ond semi draw, 15.7 to 14 .13. At the 20 minutemark, Therry with two Steve Reidy goal squaremarks and goals, and another to Kane, were 13points up. It looked all over but then St B's half for-ward Greg Wood kicked two marvellous goals, JohnPearson got another to put them a goal up . Therry, handballing desperately persisted. Finally forwardPaul Jones marked and goaled and the siren sound-ed for a draw.

What a turn-around in 'C' . Annihilated in thesecond semi by Kew, Monash Blues came out witha plan . They persisted and finally took out the flag,13 .18 to 10 .11 . Best were Sturgess, Hipwell, Gill,Carman, Culvenor, McGregor (Monash Blues) andGriffiths, Busuttil, Kalac (Kew) .

The Monash line-up : Bks: Mick Hay, ChrisRoberts, Dick Calvenor ; HB : Adrian Barker, DannyCarman, John Quin; C: Greg Hipwell. JamieSturgess, Tony Kiers ; HF: Justin Alexander, IanHildebrand, John Johnstone; F: Peter Forbes(Capt), Peter Little, Graeme Gale; RR: Tim Gill , AndyMcGregor, Steve Connelly; I/C : Brad Connell, IanKohler ; Coach : Brian Ford .

In a high standard high scoring game, OldIvanhoe 21 .10 beat St Kevins OB 19 .12 to take outthe D Section flag.

State Bank, 21 .12 easily beat West Brunswick6 .8 to win the E Section flag .

One point was the margin - Aquinas 12 .13, 'FSection premiers over Whitefriars 12 .12 .

o be promoted to Section 1 of the U19 competi-tion can be both exciting and daunting at the

same time . Exciting, because this is the ultimate chal-lenge facing U19 teams ; daunting, because of thechanging nature of youth teams every given season .tl;ilat can we expect? Will we be competitive? Will weearn respect? Will we be embarrassed? Might we dareeven to contemplate being successful?

There is nothing quite like gearing up the mind forthe coming season than to give weight to these sorts ofquestions .

From what I understand, I think it is true to saythat over the years a number of teams in the lower sec-tions of the U 19's have resisted the challenge of com-peting in Section 1 in the belief that it would be too dif-ficult there, and they would rather their players enjoy(more) success in the lower sections . This attitude, Ibelieve, is mistaken.

I am in a position to compare, having coached myU19 team in lower sections in 1995-96, and this yearin Section 1 . 1 should like to share some of mythoughts with you .

In every facet of the game, Section 1 is superior asthe following illustrations show:

a) strongly competitive teams all the way down - noeasy games, b) quicker tempo - hence fitter players, c)more skilful players across the board, d) well coachedand better drilled teams with set plays, zone defences,kick-out strategies etc., e) vastly more physical games, hence a more potent bridging of the physical gapbetween youth and senior ranks, f) interest of playersmaintained, given the closeness of the competition (atleast for two thirds of the current season )

It goes without saying that to be competitive in anygrade of football you must have the players . So it is inSection 1 . If you do not want to be embarrassed, get onyour recruiting bike and start pedaling furiously . WhenI was told my club had been promoted late last year, this was with the knowledge that I had all of six play-ers returning from the previous season .

To any aspiring U19 coach, can I say do not bedaunted about the prospect of coaching in Section 1 . Itshould be your ultimate goal. It will challenge andexcite you and fuel your imagination . Young players, not quite ready for senior football, are being groomedin the best possible VAFA youth competition . This can-not but help them be better players when their time

comes to step up . While nine of the ten teams inSection 1 have their senior teams in A or B Section, this is not the case with my club. This illustrates theVAFA's readiness to promote any youth side pro-viding they have demonstrated their capabilitiesover time.

Providing clubs can hang on to their U19 playersonce they have become of senior playing age, youwould have to think the future of those clubs isassured, the more so for having their young playerscompete against other elite footballers in Section I ofthe VAFA. Peter Schiller
