Life getting you down? Can't go a yard on the punt?Girlfriend run off with a bloke who resembles RobBrough? Well dust off the polo top, switch the dial to96 .5 and turn that frown upside down, A Sectionfooty is back with a bullet and it's season previewtime . . .

1 Old Xaverian sWell . Is there anything left to say? Normally I'd writethem off, what with McDonald leaving formegabucks in the SFL, Purss lured to Werribee, Fordrelinquishing the captaincy and Mr Chips headed forthe rubber bus . But love 'em or hate 'em, this is oneof the most amazing football clubs in the countrywho can make fools of opposition teams/scribespretty easily .Signings of note include Hugo Murphy, a youngsterfrom Springvale, Simon McCue, who has crossedfrom NSW and Ben Hackett from Mitcham . JamesMcDonnell returns from London while Mark Grahamand Tim Fleming slot in from the AFL . Beetham isbelieved to be headed to Port Douglass though likeSkasey's brief stint there, the situation is tenuousand he could be back in Melbourne quick pronto . . .

2 University Blue sFlashback . Grand Final Day, - time . Lovely day . Kidsleaping about on jumping castles, getting rides onminiature trains . Blues skip away to a four goal lead ."Hornet, you're one clever cat", I tell myself, in lightof a slightly demented selection . 90 minutes later, everything's changed, the students have turned awhiter shade of pale and I'm black-banned for life!Jimmy Scambler has headed home to Birchip andMark Rigby and Josh Tanner are sitting out 2006.They've plundered NOBS (so to speak) snaring JasonCordy, Steve Jarrot and Josh Cassell, regain DrewS!immon, Jackson Brooke and Damien Guengerichand pick up Zane Coventry (Kyabram), Jarrod Villani(Tatura, Wangaratta Rovers, Coburg) and a heap ofother kids from the bush .

3 Old Haileybury"I don't have friends, I have premierships", saidPeter Nicholson upon assuming the mantle at the 'Pitin 2002 . Now any man who says that publiclyobviously dances to a different beat but his recordspeaks for itself : multiple flags at Springvale,

Bernards and a minorpremiership at the IIBadlands . Withinjuries galore, theBloods got caught inthree way script an dbowed out manfully last year. So far, they've lostWaite and Barker (MPFL) and Jeremy Bourke (VAFAheadquarters) .Signings include a gentleman by the name of HeathHopwood, who played in three flags with CentralDistricts, captained South Australia against the VFLand established himself as one of SA's foremost malemodels, hunking it up in a string of bankcommercials . It's never dull at the Badlands .

4 St Bernard s

What on earth has happened to the Snakepit? Whatbecame of that nutcase in the scoreboard and thebloke who would piff things at you as you showered? Now the place has been gentrified, complete with anaffable coach, a quaint grandstand and recruits fromthe Land of the Rising Sun . And now Tony Liberatorewill be 'Pitting up! Jumpin' Jehovah, can you picturesome fresh faced APS boy who got a bit of it lastweek being tagged and mauled by Libba! Could havefallen apart completely last year but they'vegalvanised and rebuilt admirably and look a realknockout chance . Scratchings are significant though :Rule aline through Byrne and Keunan (WAFL), Gilland Garth (VFL) and Goullet (Old Essendon) .

5 Old Scotc h

Scotch blew it last year. And with Messrs Tapping,Kitchen, Hume, Crow, Phillips, Collins and possiblyMckenzie-McHarg departing the building, it'stempting to sack them . But they've got the bestdepth in the amateurs, the best player in theamateurs (Gerstman, despite what the folks at Xavsthink) and one of the best kicks of all time coaching(Barry Price) . Still in the mix .

6 Marcelli nDinneen is slaying 'em at Vermont. Rice and Cullinanlikewise in the WAFL . Augustin and Carmody havebeen snapped up by the VFL . Cox's shoulder keeps apoppin' . And Frazer has jumped ship to concentrateon life as a married man . So why mid-table? Well, it' s

2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

hard to write off a club whose unders win the GF byten goals . The Eagles often jump out of the blocksbut have been working on the Pensky file at thebusiness end of the season for the past few years .

7 De L a Sall eVery much a generic De La team this : quick, slightand young . Little rabbits, Tommy Brain called 'emlast year. They beat Trinity and Xavs in the preseason and ran East Burwood to a couple of goals .No way I'd tip my old team to get relegated, thoughit's one of those years where any one of seven sidescould make the drop .

8 Old Ivanho eOld Ivan No? Perhaps so . Yes, they were thedominant B Section team and yes, they've snaredToovey from East Ringwood and Sutherland fromWarrnambool . But their debits look ominous . Haros?Playing soccer. Luxon? Gone north . Gianfagna? (?)On Melbourne's rookie list . Kent and Payne? Given itaway. Beinke and Cornelius? On a Contiki Tour . Theylost all their praccy matches but there's enough stateplayers on their list to suggest they'll still be aheadache .

9 Old Trinit yMany will disagree, but I reckon Trinity are in strife .They just fell in last year, despite a vintage year fromRamsden and a relatively good run with injuries .They get back Gabe Deane Johns, Adam Andrews,Tom Healy and Chris Frost and lose Lincoln Reynoldsand Steven Brown, who had a stellar 2006 . Justreckon they may have used up their get out of jailcards .

1 0 The Old Melburnian sHoly Moly Dean, where has everyone gone!? 2005B&F Studham is off, along with Micah and JacobBerry, Holme, Mulquiney, Roberts, James and bothBeaumonts . That's their eight best players . Nomiracles this year chaps .

"Your Coaches' Association "

Playing in the Ruc kThis is one of the most exciting positions to play, giventhat you can roam the whole ground, influence the firstpossession of every stoppage and act like another keyposition player such as a centre half forward/back .It is a position that requires a lot of courage andstamina given the distances that you will need to travelin every game. Fitness is a vital key to your successaround the ground and at centre bounces . You need tobe jumping the same height at the end of the game asyou were at the start .

Centre Bounc eThe position requires substantial thinking and theadoption of different strategies in response to youropponent's strengths and weaknesses .By the end ofthe first quarter you should know :

• Which hand he favours, is he a left hand palm, right hand punch (forehand smash )

•' Does he come in from the same direction everytime?

• Is he versatile enough to change his run-up andmidfield layout?

bouncing/throwing it the same height? The timing fora run-up will be different for each umpire .

Palming - You need to be able to use both hands forpalming the football to your rovers. This ensures thatthe opponent(s) cannot block your favoured arm inboundary throw ins or ball ups around the ground .

The Smash - You need to be able to smash the ballusing your fist for a 20-30 metre knock . This is alwaysan advantage where you have windy conditions whenthe ball may bounce or float backwards over your head .It also gains a significant distance advantage equivalentto a small kick and hand ball situation and can allowyour rovers on-ballers etc a larger area in which to runand gather the ball .

Leadership - Like a bowler in cricket, you have thepower to position your players around you at centrebounces, throw ins etc. You should indicate which wayyou are going to palm/direct the ball so they can makeposition . On-bailers must demand the ball and identifythe direction and area where they want the ball to bepalmed or smashed .

What skills do you need ?Leap - You need to be able to run off a reasonable 3-5metre run-up and be able to land on your opponent'schest/shoulders. Your leap will be from your preferredleg, with the non-preferred leg up and across to protectyour body. To gauge your improvement over time, place your hands above you and against a wall andmark . Crouch down and from a standing start leap ashigh as you can and mark again . Try for 450-600mm .You will need to complete exercises to increase yourjumping/spring ability.

Run-up - you need to be able to gauge your preferredrun-up length from the ball up and mark this out fromthe centre circle . You will also need to change thislength or different ball ups - are both umpires

Observation and mental skills -You must observe theumpires in terms of ball heights and length for throw-ins and your opponent to ensure you find a way to beator nullify their skill level .From a mental perspective you need to make anynecessary changes to your game to ensure yourdominance to find a way to win the ball at centrebounces, boundary throw in and other stoppages.

Round One Previe wWelcome all C Section players, coaches, committeesand ardent followers to what will no doubt be anentertaining and pulsating season 2006 .I am indebted to several club contacts (including senio rcoaches Andrew McGregor, Graham Burgen and PaulO'Shannasy) for providing me with plenty of inside infoon their pre-season efforts, and look forward to hearingfrom each and every club on a regular basis throughoutthe season . So, on the basis of a combination of fact, rumour, conjecture and opinion, here's my view on howyour club should fare this season .

September boun dNow we all know the old chestnut about the jump fromC to B being the hardest, and it's been pretty commonfor the bottom two in B to return immediately. Fordiffering reasons, I see every chance of that happeningagain, but there are genuine challengers out there whowill not be making up the numbers .

St Bedes Mentone TigersMany have told me this introduction should've beenentitled "C Section - How Far the Tigers?" Theacquisition of Sam Anstey from Funkytown is one ofseveral which should bolster the list at Brindisi St . Theevergreen Kinsella is back to add some grunt, and withthe Wintle brothers all firing, and a rumour of "Buckets"making a guest appearance or two, the STBMT fansshould be confident of a strong showing throughout theyear.

NOB/SPCThe good oil here is that the recent 'joint venture'between NOBs and St Pats College will most likely bearfruit in the junior ranks first, with senior sides beingstrengthened more in the coming years . However, there-incarnated entity has also attracted a couple of handyready made senior players as well and they hadnumerous close shaves in the final few weeks of season2005 . They play the Gillon too well to not be incalculations .

Old Paradian sBack-to-back junior flags is an indication of the qualitycoming through at Bundoora, and even though Harf hassigned with the Bullants, I'm expecting Boundy et al tosurge forward in 2006. The numbers on the track are

outrageous at themoment and theyshould be able to pushthrough the toughmiddle months wit hgood depth .

MAYBE/MAYBE NOTAJAXThe theme of Welcome Back Kotter has been rejigged bythe Jackas as "Welcome Back Ritter" with JasonRitterman returning from a Sandringham sabbatical toslot straight into their midfield . If only Jeremy Dukescould return, they'd be a genuine top two chance . Ihaven't heard that Lewski or Israelshon have suddenlyfallen over and should be there to feed big Julian, whoseappetite for goals continues unabated . The SportscoverArena home ground arrangement should ensure bigcrowds if they get on a roll, and anything couldhappen . . . . .

MonashAndrew McGregor takes the reins at Monash and its thefirst time an ex -club stalwart has come back to coachthe club . The former D section medalist has a couple ofgaps to fill in the big man department, but otherwise hislist is quite intact. I believe key players in Creamer,Holloway, Smith, Craven and Smyth are all suiting upagain, so that's a good start . With their traditionallystrong depth in the McGoos, the Ashers will be worth aneach-way bet .

OrmondIt's all quiet down at EE Gunn with the retirement of TimStewart the only notable absentee . However, I believethey've lured Martin back from Uni Blues to add somemidfield spark . Add to that the return of one MattMcConville lurking in the forward line, and the mindboggles . Their U19s were awesome last year (albeit insection Blue) and could provide some handy 'ins' if therecruitment drive hasn't gone much further .

FitzroyThe Big Smoky is the much vaunted Lions who boast amassive list of players, and carry the emotionalfollowing of a former Fitzroy army. No-one truly knowshow good they could be, but the wise man at the headof the playing organization tells me he's got 4 or 5 youn g

14 ® THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

kids on VFL lists (Maghamez, Dullard, Bombaci andOrton) who may come in/out any week, and the luxuryof a very deep list which means rounds 4 to 14 will bewhere they make or break their season . They'!l bemarginally stronger than last year, so keep safe .

TRAPDOOR CHALLENGEDHampton

All I've heard about the green and golds is doom andgloom . Mind you, that not actually from the crew atBoss James reserve, so we'll have to just wait and see .Their core hasn't been getting any younger with TheChief, Mr Anderson, Adam Power, and Heath Tregeartaking turns driving the bus, but getting greyer by theyear. I'm hoping Zampaglione, Malthouse and Rootseygraduate from the juniors to add more consonants tomy reports throughout the year.

Old Camberwel lEven more speculation abounds at the Barn Yard whereit's confirmed 6 of their top 8 from last years' B&F, anda total of 14 from their first semi side, have moved onfor various reasons (mainly travel/work) . Whilst this willno doubt leave a significant hole in any club, it alsocreates opportunities . The Wellers have been blessedwith some fantastic U19s graduating to the seniorranks, and will be hoping to consolidate in C Grade .Loats remains as their focal point, and he'Il be a handfulfor sure. Early wins are critical, and they're a pretty fitunit I hear, so best of luck . . . . .

Parkdale Vulture sThe club with arguably the best website in the VAFA (cop

that Sheik!) is rumored to be battling with personnelleakage similar to West Papua. With Tony MacGeorgeback to playing on both legs, they have some sort ofchance, but depth is the major issue here . Still, they nowhave an U19 side to provide some cover in the event ofplayer shortages . I'm only dumping them in thiscategory because I've heard little at all, and theyprobably need something to spark up! !

After ensuri ng his family were all safe andunharmed, his first words to his father, "I've lost mymedal", underlined the significance this medal has forhim . Robert played in only one fi nal in his 20 years asa player, the 1991 F section premiership withElste rn wiek. In fact, says Robe rt , he was fortunate tohave that. "I was a late inclusion into the side becauseof an injury to another player . ANZ were heavilyfavoured to win having only lost one game during theyear . Nobody tipped us to win, but as so often happensin Grand Finals, we managed to get over the line" .

After a letter to the VAFA from his father Jim, theVAFA were able to produce a replacement medal andhave it mounted with a team photo . Presented to Robe rtat VAFA headqua rters, an overwhelmed Robe rt stated,"this has given back a memory of one of the greatestdays in my life" .

LD GEEL ._ , AND OLDHELP OUT

One on the best initiatives from our clubs during thepre-season was the efforts of Old Geelong and Old

Carey members to help out bushfire victims in thestate's west . Both clubs sent separate teams ofvolunteers to assist in the clean up and rebuilding of

fences and property . Local Farmer Tom Gutherie said,"the assistance given by these blokes has been

invaluable . We have repaired things that would take memonths to do and will help to get this farm operating

much sooner than we thought" .

Great to see a member of the VAFA Executive gaugingpopular opinion on the VAFA, done in a "Street Talk"

style format at the VAFA Coaches' Night . While mostof the responses were positive inside the function,

certain members of the public outside (some who callthe streets home) took to explaining exactly where our

reporter could shove his long fluffy microphone .Undeterred, our Sam Newman clone pressed on to

receive some quite humorous responses, as seen at theseason launch .

beaten, was the match against All Ireland at CrokePark, Dublin . This match was heavily scrutinized byKevin Sheedy and it was the intricate plays by coach

Frank Dunne] that set up much of the planning for theAustralian teams win in the International series .

The other games were played against the All IrelandUniversity (loss in Galway), the Army (our first in at

Pearse Stadium, Galway) and BishopsTown (win inCork) .

Greetings Ladies and Gentlemen, and welcome toseason 2006 . My name is Peter Williamson (AKA "TheOwill"), and I'll be your scribe for D1 section thisseason .

PREVIEW OF 200 6

Old Carey have been active in the player market, withabout a dozen players from last year's finals campaignmissing, but also picking up some quality players froma variety of sources. With the quality of the incomingsbeing more or less up to par with the outgoings, expectOld Carey to be at the very least on the periphery offinals action, if not actually in the thick of it themselves, after a slow start while they gel as a unit .

2005 D2 Premiers Old Geelong enter the new campaignwith a lot of fanfare and rumour has it are expectingtheir second successive promotion . The talent iscertainly there, but they cannot forget that there are nineother teams in D1 with the same goal in mind . Merelyturning up and hoping their reputation precedes themwon't be enough, but if they respect their opposition andplay to their full ability, they are arguably as good a showas anyone .Both Yarra Valley OB and Therry Penola are said to behard up for numbers . If this is indeed the case, it will bea long season for them . Valley have been at this level forsome time now, and in a division with a 40% turnover inteams from year to year, the odds will catch up withthem sooner rather than later. Therry have slipped acouple of grades in the last few years, which may wellhave had a detrimental effect on the size of theirpersonnel . As success breeds success, so it seems thatstruggle only produces further struggle, and Therry maywell have a big one on their hands in 2006 .

Bulleen-Templestowe have gone on a big recruitingspree, but whether this is likely to achieve anythingremains to be seen . St . Leo's Emmaus and Prahranhave been subject to plenty of hype, as have Banyuleand Rupertswood (albeit to a lesser degree), while OldMentonians remain something of a mystery . Rupo willbe looking to consolidate their spot at this level, andwould consider finals this year a bonus . Although theyhave recruited a couple of experienced campaigners, once again their successful junior set-up will provide thebulk of their new blood .

ROUND ONE PREVIEW

Old Mentonians hostEmmaus St . Leo's OCat the Playing Fields .Haven't been able t ofind out too much about either side thus far, but Iguess they'll occupy that middle ground betweenfinals and relegation . At home, I'm gonna go for the

OMs this time around .

Prahran square up against Therry Penola at ToorakPark . The Two Blues, although finalists in 2005,were a fair way off the top two, and will be looking totake the step to the, next level . As mentioned, Therryare heard to be struggling for numbers, and the

spectre of relegation from last season may still behaunting them . Prahran to win .

Old Carey travel to Domeney Reserve for their game

against Yarra Valley OB . OC fans can look forward tothe return of a fit and firing Al Parton, and theintroduction into senior ranks of 2005 U19-2 grade B& F winner Andrew Willingham . Carey looked quite

comfortable in their first year back at this level lastseason, while the Valley Boys have been treadingwater for some time . It's the OC for me .

Banyule take on Rupertswood at R .J . Brockwell Oval .Rupo continue their upward mobility, while Banyuletake a step down from C Grade . Banyule's new coachPhiv Demetriou has had great success at U19 level,

and it will be interesting to see how this translates tosenior level . Expect a fair amount of Rupo U19sfrom 2005 to get a run today . Tough call, but at

home, I'll take Banyule .

Finally, the last two D2 premiers Bulleen

Templestowe and Old Geelong face off at Ted AjaniReserve . The OGs have kept the majority of their2005 D2 premiership side, with skipper Chris

Stinchcombe the only major departure . On the otherhand, the Bullants have recruited well, and new CHBSteven Miller is one to watch, as is the returning Kain

Burridge while veteran star Greg Chivers looks setfor another big season . Another difficult tip, but Ifancy the Bullants in a tight one .

Welcome back to the land of F-Troop, the mightyStationmasters and Getta Brain. After several years ofwandering and wondering aimlessly I've decided to acceptthe kind invitation of the VAFA Politburo and put manus tomouse once again . Over the course of the season we'llanalyse the current fixture, take the occasional trip downmemory lane, celebrate the great game that is ammo footy, invite input from the readership and run a few competitionsand giveaways. Naturally a splash of political and socialcomment may be read from time to time - stay tuned .

Thank Goodness for April and the Ammos ! !March in Melbourne is so full of hype and hoopla -I got over the Commonwealth Games when they were held inCardiff. Who do your barrack for ? Jana or Tamsyn ? Well both would run good water . Then I got a trough invite to BigRonnie's Slot Cars . Mark Webber's got a nice line in jaws but he's like those ammo teams who finish 5`h to 8' eachyear, avoiding relegation but not really threatening the silverware . A dash of Little Leyton , a desh of Bangla cricket andthe dosh-fuelled extravaganza that is AFL got us through Lent to the week when Michael Sholly takes over from JohnnySo as the go to man in Melbourne . Some clubs are preparing to unfurl the hard-earned flags of 2005, others are diggingdeep to prove that relegation means springback rather than slide . Coaches and recruiters cross fingers that Marchchampions can actually play under pressure . Robert Doyle is inundated with invites to speak to leadership groups. Clubpresidents pack their water bottles, twin calicos, sirens, scorecards, runners tops and whistles knowing someone won'tturn up . A Benny Goodman protd c holds the ball aloft and a thousand snags settle on the hot plate. I love the ammos ! !

A welcome to all clubs for this new season . All clubsstart the year on a level playing field so good luck to allclubs in their quest to win the D2 Premiership . Mypredicted ladder for the end of the season is :

AquinasPeninsulaOakleighSalesianWilliamstown GYM SWerribeeGlen EiraLa TrobeIvanhoe AssumptionSt John's

For those teams that I have predicted to make the finals, good luck and for those that I have tipped to miss thefinals, this is your chance to prove me wrong . On to thisweek's games :Ivanhoe Assumption AFC ($2 .40) v Aquinas OC ($1 .50)Ivanhoe Assumption will be looking to start off the newseason with a win at home against an Aquinas teamwhich was relegated from D1 last season . The Hoeshave lost some experienced players in the off seasonwith Chris Tucker, Doni Valkanis and Richard Peoples allhanging up the boots . New coach John Garrard will behoping for another good season from skipper PaulHarris, and other senior players such as Galloway,O'Dwyer and Peggie . Aquinas can be expected to put ina strong showing here with Brown, Davies andOlarenshaw all ready for the new season. Aquinas by 35points .Glen Eira AFC ($1 .75) v Peninsula OB ($1 .95 )The Pirates travel up Nepean Highway to Packer Park totake on Glen Eira in what should be a closely foughtcontest . Reed Powney has been good for the Piratesduring the pre season and he will be closely watched bythe Saints . Glen Eira are looking at playing a moreattacking brand of football this year and the hardworking Alex Tsirogiannis will again be one of theplayers to keep an eye on for Glen Eira. Peninsula to winby 3 points .Salesian AFC ($1 .55) v La Trobe University AFC ($2 .30)This should be an interesting clash at Bosco Street

between two of lastyears middle of the tableclubs . La Trobe have hada big pre-season andnew coach Zora nColovic will go into this game full of confidence .Salesian will be hoping for another good season fromDowney and the pint sized Bonnicci . Salesian to win aclose contest by 11 points .St John's OC ($1 .80) v Williamstown GYMS ($1 .90 )I am not sure if too many of the Willy boys will have everbeen to Doveton, but the Joc's do play Thomas CarrollReserve very well and this should be a closely foughtencounter. Willy have class players at their disposal withthe Hynes brothers, Timmy Wheeler and Shaun 'Lewfatt'McGuiness . With Brendan Cocks set to go around foranother season they will surely be one of the frontrunners this season . St John's pace around the groundis their forte, and youngster Aaron Abela can showflashes of brilliance up forward . It will be interesting tosee if veteran Steve Koppens goes around for anotherseason for the Joc's or have his knees finally given way?St John's by 2 points .Oakleigh AFC ($1 .40) v Werribee AFC ($2.70 )A tough match here for newly promoted Werribee, heading to Scammell Reserve to face Oakleigh . TheTigers will be looking for another good year from theLee brothers, but Oakleigh will be a tough test for themfirst up. New coach David Gately will have the Oakleighboys ready for round one with Trevor Bromley firing andready to go after his broken wrist last season . YoungsterMick Harold's form during the pre-season has beenoutstanding for Oakleigh and he can be expected to havea big season . The two "new chums" to B Section, Therry andBeaumaris, had a great tussle at the seasidesuburb before Beauy steadied in the last quarterto win 10 .12 to 9 .6 . Nicholson, Boctor, Catlin (3),Edge, Buller and L Atkins started their seasonvery well for Beaumaris . Goodwin (6), Boyle,Taylor, Nancarrow, Elliott and Grant wereTherry's best .

(Leah has continued todevelop over the past decade into a verycompetent field ump and is now in the topsections - GR) .

With four Under 19 Sections the VAFA werejustifiably proud of the number of `junior'teams adding to the great spectacle of ammofooty every weekend . Old Xaverians in the topjunior section gave an indication of theirclub's growing strength with a first up winover St Bernards, 29 .29 to 4 .7 . Ormond, at home, unfurled their 1985 ASection pennant but the party turned sourwhen Caulfield Grammarians completelyoverwhelmed the reigning premiers 15 .10 to6 .24 . A Section scribe, Ross Booth, reportedthus "Ormond kicked 1 .11 with the breeze in adisastrous third term but taking nothing awayfrom Greg Tootell's Caulfield, they outran, outmarked and out bustled the `Monds on theirown small Gunn Reserve" . The Tribunal experienced a very long eveningresulting in no less than 26 players foundguilty of 30 offences totaling 78 matches . Wasthis a record and if so not an enviable one? Nodoubt this fact would have been on the agendafor the next VAFA Executive meeting !

The season opened in excellent conditionsresulting in some huge scores being recordedand 57 teams of the total 140 kicked in excessof 100 points . Reservoir Old Boys' juniorskicked a record score in the under 19competition against Kew, 55 goals 29 behinds .The previous record, achieved a decadeearlier, was Commonwealth Bank's 52 .29against the Army Apprentices' juniors . ForReservoir Romeo amassed 18 majors andMcGaw 14 . In comparison Truefeldt andTraynor had `quiet' games with 6 and 5 goalsrespectively .

Hello and welcome to what promises to be a very evenl ycontested year for D3 . I will try to be informative andentertaining in my articles this year, but I can only do thi swith help from you the reader. So please, if you hav eanything you want to say, please do not hesitate byemailing me at gavanf!ower@hotmai! .com and I will behappy to include your views .

2006 prediction sI am going out on a!imb and predicting the final ladderhere, and this is without any contact from Bentleigh,South Melbourne, St .Mary's Swinburne or Kew .Hopefully your contributions pick up during the season! Many pundits are predicting that Bentleigh is a lay-downmassaire to win the flag and go straight back up,however, I am not so sure . I know for a fact Westbournehas had a huge influx of players and with a new coachand new clubrooms and ground, they are looking strong .I also heard from one of my spies at Kew that they hadpicked up a solid bunch from Banyule and they are agood thing .On the flip side, my buddies down at West Brunswickhave been crying poor and playing down their chances .On this, there may be some truth with them losing thelikes of their skipper Benji as well as star onballer HeckHamilton, however, the influx of players from the nearbycolleges will ensure they will be more than competitive .The D4 premiers Elsternwick are also a side that is goingalong nicely at the minute, and with a big preseasondeveloping their fitness, they are certainly one of thesides to beat. I also expect South Melbourne to be upthere amongst the throws of the top sides, however, consistency may again be the difference between thembeing finalists or also-rans .The dark horses of the competition will undoubtedly bethe Gryphons. My mate Matt Healy informs me that onceagain there are more players on the track than peoplewho missed out on World Cup tickets, however, whetherthere are any diamonds in the rough remains to be seen .Swinburne, by all accounts is down and almost out. Withtwo men and a dog on the training track, and some talkof the club wanting to go into Club 18, it appears asthough playing the Razorbacks could well be a ClaytonsBye this year. The Saints apparently have also recruited well and havesome good practice match form, though I think they maystruggle making the transition .Which brings me to my mates down at UHS-VU . Manywithin the club had already written the lads off, however,

I have heard this before andwill have nothing of it .While they are unlikely tochallenge the top two, Ithink they will surpris emany with new coach Glenn Taylor at the helm andveterans like Cracknell, Gorringe and Langers back to ful!fitness .So my ladder prediction is ; 1 . Bentleigh 2 . OldWestbourne 3 . South Melbourne 4 . Elsternwick 5 . Kew6 . West Brunswick 7 . Monash Gryphons 8 . UHS-VU 9 .St.Marys 10 . Swinburn e

PreviewThe match of the round to me is the road-trip for OldWestbourne to Kew. One could say that an almosttraditional rivalry is forming between these two clubswith some great wins by both teams against each otherover the past two years as well as the now infamousWarrior player-list being made public from within Kew'sranks . For my winner, I am sticking with the home sideas coach Doherty refines his Warrior commentary thatwill be posted on the internet by 6pm Saturday night!Another interesting tussle will be between D3newcomers Bentleigh and West Brunswick. The violinsare still playing for the Pies as they have lost a numberof their 2005 stars, however, with the prodigal sonreturning to coach the twos in John Curtin, the club'sspirits will be at an all time high . While I think this will bea lot closer than many people expect, I am sticking withBentleigh to bring home the bacon. It is the meeting of the minds as university sides Monashand UHS-VU crunch their numbers and polish theirbeakers in a match that both will be keen to get a resultin . Very hard to make a call on the result given the hugeinflux of players to both clubs, however, I will listen tothe doomsayers at the land of the brown and tan for themoment and pick the Gryphons to open their 2006account.The Saints host South Melbourne in a match thatSt.Marys will be confident to get a win in . On the smallconfines of Ferndale Park coach Michael Learmonth willmost likely try to choke the drive of the Swanniesrunning brigade . For my pick though, I am sticking withSouth to give the Saints a taste of D3 reality. In the final match, it is Elsternwick hosting Swinburne inwhat will be a lopsided affair. The goal umpires hadbetter warm up with the players as their arms will bewaving for most of the day when the Wickers go straigh t

36 0 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006

to the top of the class with a percentage boosting win .

Press Correspondents :As I said earlier, the response to the opening round waspretty ordinary. Hopefully this picks up next week. Please send your comments, reports or criticisms togavanflower@hotmail .com by no later than midday onMonday .

We're bac kFor the clubs, it's time to answer all those questions .Can Xavs do it again? Can Uni Blacks take the nextstep? Are Fitzroy Reds the real deal? Can OGs get backto C? Can the Pirates finally get up there? Can theWickers continue their barnstorming run? Can SyndalTally Ho celebrate their 40th anniversary with a flag? For us umpires, the pre-season is over, it's time to forgetabout the times we ran in our 800's or 400's aroundElsternwick Park. Let's change the shape andconcentrate on running the diamond . What a long pre-season it's been with our training supervisor RobSneddon not letting up again in his torture of us . But hemade it fun by putting us in groups to build team spirit .But of course umpires in teams just bring out that uglycompetitive nature which could have had most of us upat the tribunal . The season starts now so let's bring iton! !

RuleOne new rule this year, which brings a smile to all theumpires, is the new time for quarters which are now20min plus time on . The benefit of this is that the after-match should start a whole lot earlier and we can still behome at normal time (if the other half doesn't know) .Can we see the last of the 40min quarters and finishingin the dark? Hopefully, gone will be the thought that badlight could stop play .

Goal Umpire Adviso rCongratulations to the newly appointed Goal UmpiresAdvisor Andrew Barnes and we wish him well in hisendeavours to whip the boys into shape consideringthey come in different shapes . Thanks to Shane Herbertfor all his work with the Goalies over the years andwelcome him back into the middle of the big sticks.

Snake v UmpireAndrew Barnes over the summer break had an up closeand personal encounter with a snake (we believe a tigersnake) . After a short stay in hospital the snake wasreleased with no side effects and returned home to hisfamily. Andrew was seen slithering away and foundbasking in the sun on a rock wearing no clothes .

Web Sit eWe encourage all umpire sto constantly check ou

r web site at hftp://www.vafaua.asn .au/ Our Webmaste rTim Sutcliffe has done a fantastic job with this, allinformation is there if umpires have missed meetings orif we just want to take the mickey out of someone, it'sthere for all to see .

Should we??It was 72 years in the making, but should we brieflyacknowledge the great premiership win by our belovedSydney Swans? Considering both scribes are long-suffering supporters of the red and white, of course wewill take advantage of the opportunity to gloat in print .Yes, both scribes had a huge night in Clarendon Streeton September 24th, partying hard with another swan inGrant Joyner. Word is, that two of these three have evenimmortalised the win with some body art .

Happy Bi rt hdayAs most clubs would know by now, a third card has beenintroduced for the umpires to use this year . We now havethe yellow, red and black cards . In an Elsternwickpractice match a couple of weeks ago it appears that anew card was used - the birthday card . Yes, abouthalfway through the last quarter, veteran (I suppose wecan say old) umpire Anthony Damen (and birthday boy)was surprised by a tap on the shoulder after a goal hadbeen kicked . His umpiring partner had run from thecentre to hand him a birthday card . Memorable Isuppose, and it's the thought that counts . Earlier in theday Anthony also displayed his goal-umpiring prowessafter a long goal had the goal umpire retrieving the ballfrom the Elwood Canal . AD did the right thing and wavedthe flags for him !

RecruitmentFor any players out there who may have found the pre-season too long and painful (and you realise you justcan't do it anymore), it's not too late for a career change .Yes, the legs will get a work-out, but you won't suffer thephysical body torture of a footballer. If you wish to joinour ranks call Brian Goodman at the VAFA on 9531 8333 .

The start of every football season brings on th eusual amount of cliches attached to our wonderfu lgame .

0 e week at a time, happy to get the four points, it sall about process etc are sure to get plenty of airtimefrom the various football folk this week and nodoubt well into the year . It would be easy to declarethe D4 report cliche free however we can't so wewon't !

Team Reviews :

Albert Park High profile recruitment of PeterBedford will ensure that finals are on their mind .Box Hill Nth Street tip to be the big improvers . Hada great start to 2005 before injury cut short theirmomentum . Will be eyeing a top four positionBulleen Top two finish before going out in straightsets come finals time . Very difficult to see why theywont be around the mark again .Eley Park certainly the hardest side to get a markeron . After a few years with the 'clubbies' they haverebuilt two sides . Keep safe .

Eltham At times last year looked world beaters . Achange in coaching staff may assist in delivering thepotential to results

Hawthorn A slow start to 2005 before a great 11game streak saw them finals bound . Anything lesswould be a disappointment in 2006 .North Brunswick Disappointing year in 2005 andlooking to strike back this year. Another proud clubthat will be looking for rebound action in 2006Power House One of the VAFA feature clubs who willnot enjoy the drop to D4 . Plenty of word around thatthe recruiting of a star forward should install themas favourite sRichmond Tough few years for the Richmond boyswith 2006 very much a rebuilding year . A few stepsin the right direction in 2005, hopefully this cancontinue in 200 6

Syndal Tally Ho Another side for whom the drop willbe a bitter pill to swallow. History suggest theyalways respond well to such a drop and will be adifficult proposition in 2006

This week's Matches :Eley Park host Elthamin a difficult one tojudge . The Sharks arehard to get a form lin ethrough whilst th eTurtles often take a little while to get going . Thinkingthat the Turtles might be the improvers, so will takethem in round 1

Box Hill North welcomes Hawthorn . The Hawks wonboth games comfortably last year and with a goodpre-season under their belt should win first up

Richmond travel to Bulleen hoping for a good hit outfirst up . I fancy the Bulleen boys to be in the thick ofthings all year and hard too see them dropping thisone .

The two returnees clash when Syndal pop down theroad to take on Power House . The clubs have builtup quite a rivalry in past years however if in doubt,go with home ground advantage . The House for me .Finally, Albert Park plays a 'home' game at NorthBrunswick down at Sportscover Arena . Both sideswould have been disappointed with 2005 . Not sureabout this one at all . Perhaps North Brunswick .

Premiers? Bulleen might be the one this year whilst"Big" Dan Lauletta is favourite to go back to back inB+F stakes .

Looking for some great support from the clubs asthey use this report to aid their branding process .Would love to hear regularly from all the 10 clubsvia ed [email protected] .au or else 0418 348 723 .

Under 19-1Another year dawns upon us and yet again ,another JS McCann trophy is up for grabs . Itseems like yesterday that we waved foot ygoodbye and mad Monday hello . But now it's timeto say goodbye to the summer of love and helloboys .U19 section 1, "is it good footy?" a colleagueonce asked . Just as sure as Uni Blues legendFrank Hennigan will show up for another pre-season of running, "my oath it is, some of thebest you will see", I sternly replied .Who will be the premier, who will be the fizzer, andwho will be the team that just does not deliver? These questions will be answered over the next 22weeks, but while I'm at it, lets try to shed somelight on it now .

What's hot ?Marcellin - 10 goal drubbing of Collegians in2005 Grand Final . Enough saidBanyule-Viewbank - 2003 U19 Red Premiers,2005 U19 Section2 Premiers, 2006 U19 Section1 . . . . . . . . join the dots, it's not that hard !

What's not ?Uni Blues - Been so promising over the past twoyears, but failed to secure a top two finish . Bringback the halcyon days . Plenty to choose fromdown there at the Uni, is the coach feeling thepressure to deliver?Old Xavs - Last Grand Final berth in 2001 . Surelya powerhouse team deserves better.Underachieving at U19 level in recent history? Ithink so .

been left with a young and inexperienced list, hoping to rebuild a fresh competitive spirit, whileCaulfield should consider themselves a top 4 side .The home side by 4 goals .The Sharks need a big year after finishingseventh . They play a Blacks side on the way upwith all the pride they can muster on and off thefield . But, the Sharks should give the newbies atough introduction to section 2 footy . Sharks by 3goals .Old Brighton will be fuming at their relegation, and unfortunately for Old Melburnians, theTonners will surely be aiming to stamp theirdominance in the comp, showing the rest wherethey've come from and how they plan to return .Brighton by 46 points .Old Camberwell have had strong performances inpractice matches, however all wins were againstsides in lower divisions, so their strength will betested when they meet the Friars, who I'm alsotold have had a strong summer .The Wellers in the round's closest showdown .Old Trinity last season's under-achievers, host OldCarey, who after a poor finals performance lastyear, will be hoping new coach "Butch" Palmer canlead the Panthers to a premiership . Trinity will runout of legs and it'll be the visitors by 7 goals .

Under 19- 3The Commonwealth Games have been and gone, the Grand Prix party has packed up and left ourshores and the Melbourne International Flowerand Garden show has been dug up and plantedelsewhere, which leaves us with one thing on ourminds . . .footy. Three new teams enter Section 3,with Emmaus St Leos (Red Premiers), Ormond(Blue Premiers) and Old Essendon (2) joining thetilt for the premiership .The most anticipated match of Round 1 comes inthe form of newcomers Emmaus playing host tolast year's runner-up Oakleigh in what should be acracking affair. Emmaus may have only lost onegame for the entire 2005 season, but I am tippingOakleigh, my early premiership favourite, to winthis encounter by two straight kicks .Old Ivanhoe will be looking to improve on lastseason's mid-table performance and with CoachBrad Shadbolt reporting good numbers and solidpre-season form, they may be this year's big

improvers . They face the tough task of St . BedesMentone first-up, and in what should be a closeaffair, the home ground advantage should see theHoers get up by 10 points .Newcomers Ormond will be looking to get theircampaign off to a flyer and should easily accountfor Ajax by six goals as they are a formidableopponent at home, while both Old Essendon andBentleigh will battle it out at Essendon GrammarSchool . Old Essendon were the whipping boys ofSection 2 last year, however, with a new coachingstructure in place and many new players to boot, they should be far more competitive . In this tossof the coin affair, I will stick with Bentleigh by 25points, preferring to wait and see what OldEssendon put together.New La Trobe Uni Coach Martin De Bono bringsan impressive CV to the club, indicating he wantsa committed, fit and successful U19 side thisseason . I expect La Trobe to finish around mid-table depending on the miracles De Bono canwork, however, they face a very competitiveMelbourne High team first-upand I think the OldBoys might have Uni's measure early in theseason . Melbourne High by 30 points .

Under 19 Blu eWhile we are a bit behind our AFL counterparts, season 2006 could not have come quick enough, and I am looking forward to a Round 1 which willbe tougher to pick than a Makybe Diva-lessMelbourne Cup .Four newcomers in Section Blue make it a difficultto draw a line through the competition so early inthe season, however, Mazenod and Salesian looklike the teams to beat . Mazenod should accountfor newcomers Monash Blues (3) away at Unifirst-up by 34 points, while Salesian tackle anunknown quantity in the newly formed OldMentonians, with the Panthers fielding an U19team for the first time . Salesian by 28 points .The match that creates a lot of interest will seeHampton host De La Salle, with both teamslooking to better last year's performance . Bothteams are reported to have had solid preseasons, however, Rovers led by Skipper Lee Smith shouldhave the wood over De La in this encounterwinning by 33 points .Parkdale Vultures are back in the U19 competitio n

® THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER 2006 49

since their hiatus after the 2003 season, andshould be looking to start their campaign with awin over last year's cellar dwellers OakleighClayton . The Oakleigh Clays will be looking for amarked improvement but might find the Vulturesare tough task in Round 1 . Parkdale by 22 .Powerhouse have merged with South Morningtonto form an U19 team this season and they take onthe Old Haileyburians, a match that has sent mereaching for the Tarot cards. I believePowerhouse/South Mornington will win theirinaugural match by 13 points, however, more willbe known about both teams come Round 2 .Any match reports, club news please feel free tosend me information to ai_vafaQhotmail.co m

Under 19 Re dWith the promotion of Emmaus St . Leos, SectionRed will see three clubs vying for that elusive topposition .The first is Kew, who after an impressive firstseason in Red are front runners . They travel toOld Westbourne, who over the last two seasonshave occupied the middle ground in Red and willneed to break this hoodoo before September . Kewby a couple of straight kicks .Second is Bulleen Templestowe . The perennialslow starters this year have done a hard summerand picked up some strong juniors . Round onesees them packing the proverbial overnight bagand heading out to Rupertswood, who after asuccessful 04 season slumped to the bottom ofthe table last year. Bullants by 53 points .Thirdly, last year's finalists Aquinas, host Fitzroywho until recently were the trend setters in thecomp . Aquinas have had strong prakies againstEFL sides, while the Reds have played section 2contenders, Old Camberwell, so both teams willbe well tested for the opening tussle which willsee the Reds just beaten over the line .In the round's final match, the Old Xavs return toSection RED, to field their second Under 19'ssquad after a year in the wilderness, travelling outto Therry Penola. The Xavs will be too strong forthe Lions by 32 points .North Old Boys in their merger with St . Patrick'sBallarat, also re enter the comp, opening theaccount with four points as the BYE rears its uglyhead yet again .

Another season ; we farewell two teams ; say hello to twonew competitors; welcome back a former stalwart andexpress good wishes to our new editor.Little is known of Club XV111 form so my selections aremade without confidence and probably will not help medefend "Kate's Kup" or should that be "Balme's Basin ? "

Section 1Old Scotch, who have a reputation of being slowstarters, will prove competitive against reigningpremiers St Kevin's, who nevertheless should haveenough skill to take the points.Mazenod, under a new club coaching regime . welcomedebutants, St Bede's Mentone Tigers to Central Reserve .Mazenod were competitive in 2005 and today I expectthey will prove too experienced for the newcomers .Last season's disappointments are now behindUniversity Blues, who are confident of success undertheir new coach, Andrew Waxman . The Students todaymeet Section 2 reigning premiers, Old Xaverians 2, whomay be short on numbers with the resurrection of theirsecond Under 19 side . I expect a tight contest and giventhe editor's instruction to be daring, I select UniversityBlues to win .Perennial finalists, Prahran and De La Salle meet ontheir mutual home ground, Darling Park . No doubt theaging Prahran players will again be competitive andanxious to fulfill their potential . However they meet adetermined De la Salle anxious to regain lost prestige asthey missed the finals in 2005 for the secondconsecutive season . I reckon on a De La Salle victorythrough their superior match fitness .Old Melburnians have experienced little success againstOld Xaverians for many seasons and today I cannot seethe situation changing as the Xaverians will bedetermined to regain their justly won reputation as thecompetition trend setters .

Section 2Old Brighton Grammarians will appreciate their homeground advantage over Fitzroy Reds, who have neverplayed on Brighton Beach Oval . The Reds will be keenbut the locals will take the four points .Newly promoted Whitefriars make the long journey westto play Therry Penola, whose record at home untilrecently was excellent. Reports filtering through indicate

Whitefriars will be 1 istrong so I will selectthem, as Therry Penolawill need to improvemarkedly on their 2005 form .

Marcellin should have the advantage of preseasonpractice and experience of playing together overMonash Blues, many of whose players are now in theveteran stage and whose replacements are not yetintegrated into the team . Marcellin to start with a victory.

To select the winner of the Mt Lilydale and UniversityBlacks game is a monumental task . Mt Lilydale havereturned to their school site under a new mentor, following their peripatetic experiences of 2005 . whendespite their lack of success and a home, they gaveseveral creditable performances . The Blacks face thelongest trip of the season, with many new players andalthough their club is riding on the crest of a wave ofsuccess, I suspect they will lower their colours to MtLilydale today .St Bernards, who return to the competition after a fiveseason hiatus, welcome Collegians, who just missed afinal's berth in 2005 . I select St Bernards purely becauseof the daunting task facing visiting teams at WestEssendon .

Section 3Emmaus St Leos, who just missed the four last season, should start with a win over the newly amalgamatedNorth Old Boys/ St Patrick's Ballarat . The new side willbe enthusiastic but judged on the numbers appearing attraining as shown on the club website, they could wellbe short on personnel . Also having to travel toBennettswood is not an easy task for newcomers to theinner urban areas . Emmaus St Leos should win well .C .P.Snow (and Peter Hille) would view the Old Geelongand Fitzroy Reds game as a clash of the "Two Cultures" .Old Geelong have never shown the consistency neededto feature in the finals (since V.A .F.A. affiliation),whereas Fitzroy Reds finished third last season . TheReds will miss Tony Jackson, but they should prove toostrong for Old Geelong .Two of last season's finalists, Caulfield Grammariansand Old Scotch meet at Glenhuntly. Despite theirdisappointing end to 2005 and minus some veterans, Ibelieve Caulfield will be strong enough to win this game .
