Conference Theme

Democracy & the University in a Turbulent World

An AUDEM conference is democracy at its best, the gathering of democratically minded individuals seeking reasoned understanding of the pressing concerns of the contemporary world through collaborative exchange of ideas and expertise.

The Alliance of Universities for Democracy cordially invites you to join with us in our important endeavors.

We are honored to hold our 24th Annual Conference in the extraordinary city of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina on the Miljacka River. We will gather there from

October 13 to October 15, 2013

How appropriate it is that we meet in Sarajevo!

The city of Sarajevo represents to all the world the courage and bravery of individuals in the face of evil and the power of humankind’s drive to seek reconciliation and peace.

Sarajevo means so much to so many. Through struggle and survival, and against all odds, this great historical center of multi-religious tolerance has risen from the ashes of war to show a troubled world the resilience of the human spirit and the power of the persistent dream of people to live together in peace.

These developments underscore the need for educators and scholars to come together to discuss the role, responsibility and mission of universities in promoting the development of democratic citizenship and democratic values in the 21st century.

Our conference offers an historic opportunity to contemplate the role of the university in democrat i c soc ia l , po l i t i ca l , economic transformation.

At this critical moment in world history, as crises of grave proportion challenge us across the globe, the promise of democracy stirs in the hearts of human beings who hope to translate their desire for full democratic participation into the social processes of their nations. This conference brings us together to discuss the university’s role and responsibility in promoting democracy, keeping it vital and educating an enlightened electorate, as key to preserving decency and freedom worldwide.

The Alliance of Universities for Democracy (AUDEM) has since its founding been committed to d e fi n i n g a n d p r o m o t i n g democratic interaction and engagement.

The City of Sarajevo is situated in a beautiful valley surrounded by lush hills. The region has had a rich, complex and troubled history.

The Sarajevo valley has been inhabited since Neolithic times, its most famous ancient occupants being the Illyrians who settled along the Miljacka River. The modern city of Sarajevo was founded in the 15th century by the Ottoman Empire. Renowned over the centuries for being a city of cultural and religious diversity, the “Jerusalem of Europe,” it was until the late 20th century the only European city to have houses of worship for Catholics, Orthodox Christians, Jews, and Muslims in one neighborhood.

Sarajevo was the scene of tragic events in the recent Balkan Wars, enduring the longest siege of a capital city in the history of modern warfare, longer by far than the sieges of Stalingrad and Leningrad. A siege force of 13,000 Bosnian Serbs, Chetniks and the Yugoslav Army assaulted the city from the surrounding hills, killing 11,000 civilians including more than 1,500 children and

wounding 56,000 including more than 15,000 children.

The architecture of Sarajevo tells the tale of the city as the juncture of East and West. Our conference venue is Stari Grad, the Old City, where architecture and culture are strongly influenced by both the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires.

Historical monuments include the city’s many religious houses of worship and the old Ottoman Latin Bridge dating back to the 16th century that was the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

Sarajevo is an ideal location from which to evaluate the twists and turns of history, as well the path toward progress.

Today Sarajevo is a mix of old and new, nature and city. The city remains a multi-religious center of interfaith dialogue.

The Board of the Alliance of Universities for Democracy has selected the theme Democracy & the University in a Turbulent World for this year’s conference.

We believe that this theme provides academics the opportunity to contribute to the international discussion of the events that are unfolding worldwide. It is essential that we address the issue of the role of the university in promoting and defining democratic values and engagement in this unprecedented period of political and social upheaval.

We believe that the university is the flagship of a society.  It has the power and responsibility to lead with ideas and activities that promote the fullest development of the human being.

To that end we are calling people together who wish to collaboratively build an international network of scholars, educators, humanitarian organizations, government officials and politicians to develop a democratic agenda for universities for the 21st century.  Our desire is to learn from the successes of programs and from theorists from many disciplines about their efforts to create an engaged university.

Below we suggest an array of session topics, many of which reflect the continuing focus of AUDEM members.

We invite presentations that resonate with our host country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the region of Southeastern Europe, as they engage in democratic nation building and seek peace with justice after emerging from a terrible war.

We invite presentations that speak of the changing contours of culture in the literary, visual and performing arts. In the rich cultural environment of Sarajevo, we hope that some presentations will address the arts – music, literature, film, visual arts, poetry and architecture.
