Welcome, and thank you for taking the time to pick up the premier issue of The Alabama Clipper. First, we would like to tell you a little bit about ourselves. Our company is based out of Weaver, AL. We are a Christian family and our company is built on Christian principles. We have five children, all boys, ages three, five, eleven, fourteen and fifteen. I was born and raised in the Calhoun County area (White Plains) and my wife is from Rutledge, AL, which is about an hour south of Montgomery in Crenshaw County.

With the state of our economy being the way it is, if you are like us, then you are always looking to save money any way you can. In this issue of The Alabama Clipper you will find discounts and information for area businesses. We want to help everyone in Calhoun County by providing the largest compilation of savings, services, and resources that we can get our hands on. Our concept in the beginning was to provide area businesses with a way to promote their company through coupon offers or just savings in general. I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Steven Landers, the owner of Effina’s Tuscan Grill, to discuss the inspiration and history behind Jacksonville’s newest restaurant.

As a kid growing up in Oxford, AL, Landers had always felt a tug at his heart to be involved in his own business and more specifically, the restaurant business. It was his Grandmother Effina or “Effie” as she was called, who originally inspired his love for authentic great tasting food. According to Landers, she had this way of making mealtime at her house a truly wonderful event.

After high school, Steven joined the Navy and was fortunate enough to be able to travel the country and to experience many different types of food. Through these experiences, his dream began to take shape and he focused in on the pizza business. While stationed in Groton, CT, he had the opportunity to experience what some say is the best pizza that America has to offer in a small town by the name of Mystic, CT. Up until this point the only authentic pizza he had experienced was a Greek style pizza from Mata’s Pizza in

Anniston, AL. Although Mata’s pizza is a good pizza, Landers was now experiencing a whole new culture and style of pizza in the northeast.

After his time in Connecticut, he was then permanently stationed for the next five years on the west coast. Here he began exploring the western U.S. and Canada and continued to sample the different types of pizza as often as possible along the way. One of his favorite pizzas of all was at an extremely small take out only pizzeria called Seabeck Pizza. You would actually take your “pie” and eat it out on the docks overlooking the Seabeck Marina on the Kitsap Peninsula in the state of Washington. The pizza was so delicious yet was in such a remote location and by far had the most picturesque view of all the places he visited. In Landers’ opinion, Seabeck Pizza was even better than the famous Mystic Pizza he had eaten back in Mystic, CT.

It was after the Navy and after college that Landers really honed in on opening his own pizzeria. It was the lack of great independently owned establishments where one could find a good “pie”, that sparked his interest in the Calhoun County area. To him, Jacksonville seemed the most logical place to open is very first pizzeria. It is a college town and there isn’t a place to get an authentic New York Style or Old World pizza. Also, being a family man with four children, it is a great place to raise a family.

Steven is quick to mention the people who have been with him since the beginning. Executive Chef Preston Kingore from Ft.. Walton Beach, FL., John Paul Zinn from Anniston, AL., Justin

Leonard from Wellborn, AL and Kimberly King also from Anniston, AL. These people have been in the kitchen since day one and have contributed greatly to the current Effina’s menu. They, along with other influences, have introduced new techniques and menu items that have elevated Effina’s above the status of just another “pizzeria” and into a true Tuscan Grill. Effina’s now offers many familiar pasta dishes as well as fresh fish, steaks, sub sandwiches and desserts. “But one thing is for sure, no matter what I, Preston or any of the others dream up and put on the menu, “Great Pizza” is always available at Effina’s”, says Landers.

According to Landers, he sat out to create the concept of a warm, inviting, laughter filled experience for his guests......Just like the times he remembers at Grandmother Effie’s house.

History of Father’s Day

Ever thought it would be interesting to know how Father’s Day came into practice and celebrated worldwide? Here’s a short history on the holiday, and meaning of the different colors of roses to be worn that Day. About 4,000 years ago a young boy named Elmusu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life by carving a Father’s Day message on a card made out of clay. No one knows what happened to Elmesu or his father, but the tradition of having a special day honoring fathers has continued through the years in countries across the world. The Countries, where the Catholic Church were of significant influence on the culture of the society, Father’s Day is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day (March 19). However, a more

secular celebration which is not associated with any religion is followed in recent times to highlight the increased diversity among people from all over the globe coexisting together in one place. Father’s Day is celebrated popularly on 3rd Sunday in June in many parts of the world. The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, WA. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter,

a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. President Nixon, in 1972, established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father’s Day was born as a token of love and gratitude that a daughter cherishes for her beloved father. Roses are the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.
