ARNDELL ANGLICAN COLLEGE ADVOCATE NEWSLETTER 2016 118-124 Wolseley Road, OAKVILLE NSW 2765 P. 02 4572 3633
From the Headmaster Mr Gareth Leechman
As the term draws to an end I would like to remind our community of two important events
that are coming up. The first being our Junior School musical Honk Jr. which will be occurring
this Thursday and Friday nights. Over the past semester our Junior School students, under
the leadership of Miss Rachel Joyce, have been rehearsing in preparation for their production
and this is the week that our Junior School students have the opportunity to shine! So please
purchase your tickets, they are selling fast, via the Flexischools website. I myself am looking
forward to seeing the musical on Friday night.
Secondly, next week are the high school parent / teacher interviews. These will be hosted
over three afternoons on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. I encourage all parents of students in
Years 7 – 11 to attend these interviews. The interviews provide all involved an opportunity to discuss the progress of
your children, identifying strengths as well as looking towards areas that require further improvement. I would also like
to remind parents that we encourage students to attend these meetings and if they do attend they are expected to
wear full school uniform. In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the number of students attending and
this is most pleasing to see, the more responsible they become for their learning the more likely they are to achieve
the results they are capable of.
Finally, as the term draws to a close I would like to thank the College Community for their support of the Kinder family
over the past few weeks. I know that they have appreciated it, but so have many others in our community. May you
all have a restful and enjoyable break and I look forward to seeing you all next semester as we explore the second half
of the year together.
Chaplaincy Chat Rev Jeremy Clark
At times, like our College has been through recently, it is comforting to know we have a God who cares. Please find
below Psalm 23 for your encouragement. A Davidic psalm.
1 The LORD is my shepherd;
there is nothing I lack.
2 He lets me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside quiet waters.
3 He renews my life;
He leads me along the right paths for His name’s sake.
4 Even when I go through the darkest valley,
I fear no danger, for You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
6 Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD as long as I live.

confidence, clarity in speech and listening skills. Students learn a variety of presentation skills ranging from public
speaking, reading, and verse speaking through to drama.
Students have the opportunity to participate in examinations conducted by the Australian Speech Communication
Association. Last year approximately 3,000 students from schools, private studios and tertiary institutions were
examined throughout Australia.
ASCA held their annual Awards Ceremony on the 21st of May 2016 at Ravenswood School for Girls in Gordon, to
celebrate exceptional achievements from 2015.

Congratulations to the students for their achievements and for proudly representing the school.
Hawkesbury Youth Mission Rev Jeremy Clark
Last weekend Arndell played host to the Hawkesbury Youth Mission (HYM). HYM is a gathering of local Anglican Youth Groups to be spurred on to live for Jesus. Over the weekend the youth heard talks from the Bible about how God loves us and calls Christians to love others. Following this they went out into the community to serve as Jesus served us. Tasks were completed for community groups like Riding for the Disabled at Richmond, North Richmond Nursing Home, cleaning up in local schools, collecting clothing for the Take Love campaign and car washing to raise money for missionary work. The youth had a great time and were challenged to continue serving throughout the rest of the week.

From the Careers Office Mr Tom Lavelle
Western Sydney University Open Day- Wednesday, 1st of June 2016
On Wednesday the 1st of June Western Sydney University provided an exciting opportunity for 46 Year 10 and 11
students to experience university life and attend lectures relating to their areas of interest.
Students were invited to volunteer, register online and choose from a huge range of course options, the University
provided everything, including transport, individualised itineraries, map, tour guides, meals (fruit for breakfast and
sausage sizzle / fruit lunch) and even a bag with notepad and pen for all students.
Initial panel sessions helped students understand course options and the flexibility and responsibility for individual
learning that define university study. Information relating to ATARS and 5 bonus point schemes (for local Western
Sydney (Arndell) students and 85.0 ATAR recipients) were discussed as were all the options in terms of alternative
entry and movement between courses once enrolled.
Deferment and advantages / disadvantages of gap years were also presented through open question sessions with
current WSU students. The added advantage in hearing from current WSU students who were studying diverse
courses including business, property marketing, paramedic studies, nursing, teaching, policing and health sciences
(medicine) who came from a wide range of public, religious and independent school backgrounds with ATARS ranging
from 58.0 through to 99.1.
Initial sessions where followed with the most popular Arndell student selections including Criminology, Water, Wildlife
and Sustainability, Law, Engineering, Journalism, Teaching, Health Science, Policing, Midwifery and Designing the
Future.
The Arndell students were outstanding ambassadors for the College drawing comment from WSU staff as to their
responsible behaviour, good manners and thoughtful questions. Ironically, in one communications lecture, the only
student prepared to communicate with the lecturer (ask / answer questions) came from Arndell.
It was a highly successful event by the University; most Arndell students felt motivated to pursue tertiary studies and
more confident as to the feasibility of their doing so. Several are now hoping to attend WSU whilst others now see it
as a serious “Plan B”.
Parent Teacher Interviews Mrs Karen Merrick
Year 7-11 Semester One Reports and Parent, Student and Teacher Interviews

which are being held on Monday the 20th of June, Tuesday the 21st of June and Wednesday the 22nd of June in
the College Gymnasium.
Last Wednesday the 8th of June, parents and guardians were emailed a code to request and book interviews with
teachers via www.edval.com.au/book .

NSW Aeronautical Velocity Challenge Mrs Jennifer Daly
Arndell recently took two teams to compete in the Western Sydney Regional Heats for the NSW Aeronautical Velocity
Challenge. We are very pleased that one of our teams won this challenge.
With a record rocket launch distance of 95.7 Metres, congratulations to Arndell One. The Arndell One team of
Brin Liddell, Olivia Vella, Matthew Holman, Larissa Read and Paige Harding are now looking forward to the
State Finals in a bid to become State Champions.
Congratulations to both our teams that represented Arndell on the day who truly had a ball both with the Competition
and spending time at Western Sydney University learning about engineering and industrial design, and exploring their
makerspaces for future careers.
An exciting day for us all!

Tuesday 5 July – Friday 8 July 2016
For School Years K to 6
DAY CAMP is a program for boys and girls in school years Kindergarten
to Year 6. It is an exciting time of discovery and adventure in the
wonderland of nature. Experience the fun of hikes, campfires, cooking
food on an open fire, things to make just by using what nature provided.
HOW DOES IT WORK? The camp is for 4 days, commencing at 9:00am and finishing at 3:30pm. Campers need to bring
their own lunch each day. Day Camp lets campers have all the fun and experiences of a normal camp, but the security
of sleeping at home each night. Campers are all in groups of 6-8 children. Each group has its own adult leader and
helper, and they stay together for the whole camp. The leadership team work together to ensure the maximum safety
and enjoyment of all the campers. All leaders have had the appropriate child protection training and have had Working
with Children checks. Parents are welcome to attend the morning and afternoon assemblies which are highlights of
the Day Camp program.
WHERE IS IT? Day Camp 2016 is being held at a property in East Kurrajong. It is ideal for Day Camping, as it combines
natural bushland with open space for group activities. You will receive a letter to confirm your acceptance to the
Day Camp program and details on the property’s location.
Please contact St Johns Anglican Church on 02 4575 3800 for further information. Registrations forms also available
at the Administration office.
