Lets Talk about WhiskyWhen I looked up ‘whisky drinker’ on Google the stereotypes Ifound included: older gentleman, hardcore drinker, cowboys (!),Scotsman… Hmm, none of the above describe me or, indeed,many of my fellow whisky lovers and so a good starting point foran exploration of the world of whisky seems to be what inspiresmy passion for whisky and why I think it’s a drink that anyone canenjoy.

Whisky is made from just three ingredients – grain, water andyeast. The basic process is to make a strong ‘beer’, distil it twoor three times to produce a clear spirit then store it in a cask,where it acquires not only its colour but also many of its flavoursand aromas. What is special about this deceptively simpleprocess is that, in this world of homogeneity, the influence ofindividual people, ingredients, processes and environments isvery evident in the final product – many thousands of whiskyexpressions have been produced and each has their ownparticular taste and personality. Additionally, the amber nectar inyour glass can be a single malt, a blended malt, a grain whisky ora blended whisky, and could have originated from countries asdiverse as Scotland or India, so you soon start to see what anintriguing and varied spirit whisky is – and why we say there is awhisky out there to suit everyone!

Whisky has the ability to be contemporary or traditional, robustor silky smooth. Whisky drinkers can be male or female, andfrom 18 to 80+. When it comes to an ugly contest in the bird world, theRook wins hands-down.Similar in size to the Carrion Crow but more untidy inits appearance, they are easily identified by grey/whiteskin at the base of the bill, a peaked head and shaggythigh feathers that resemble baggy trousers.With over 1.2 million breeding pairs of these unsightlybirds throughout the UK, flocks of Rooks overhead(often accompanied by Jackdaws) are a familiar sight tous all.The Rook is an extremely social bird, foraging in groupsand nesting communally, pairs stay together for years,often for life.Not so well known amongst us is the Rooks intelligence.When it comes to brains, the Great British Rook standsalone! They are prolific problem solvers, able to usetools to reach their goal. Tests carried out showed thatRooks can bend a length of straight wire into a hook,enabling them to retrieve worms from the bottom of aglass tube. If the tube is partially filled with water, theRook will drop stones in to raise the water level untilthe worm is reachable. Evidence enough of how brightthis strange looking bird is, but I would like to sharewith you my own personal favourite.Scientists studying Rook behavior, filmed Rookscollecting nuts and dropping them onto a main road,vehicles ran over the nuts, cracking them open for thebirds to retrieve. Now this is clever in itself but evenmore impressive in this case was that the birds hadpicked a stretch of road next to a pedestrian crossing.They would wait for someone to press the button atthe crossing, holding back until the lights turn redbefore descending to collect the cracked nuts in safety.This clearly demonstrates a clear comprehension ofcause and effect, as well as an appreciation of a whollyalien (human) concept, traffic lights…Ugly most definitely, bird brained I think not!!C.Row

Obesity is a serious problem of our times – in both people and their pets. Animals don't usually sufferfrom heart attacks in the same way as people do. However, they (like us) are susceptible to a numberof other very serious health concerns related to being overweight. These all lead to a poor quality of

life, i.e. unhappy animals! Who wouldn't be able to tell the difference in happiness between a slim and energetic dogplaying in the park, and an obese one who hardly manages to waddle those 300 feet getting to the park!? Mostoverweight animals are not made that way by themselves, it’s usually because of their owners! In both man andanimals, overfeeding and lack of exercise are the main causes of obesity. Too much food, and often the wrong typeof food, can cause the daily calorific intake to increase dramatically. If the balance between calories taken in versuscalories burnt off isn't right the body will produce large fat deposits. As a result the animal becomes overweight andeventually obese.Your veterinarian is indispensable in helping your pets to get back to normal weight and consequently greatlyimprove their chances of living a healthier, happier and longer life. He/she will advise you on the right type of food,the right amount of food and how to help “burn off” those excess calories. Pet food manufacturers have given us awide range of brands and formulas specifically designed to match your pet’s needs at the different stages of his/herlife. The required amount of daily calories decreases with age, it changes after animals have been neutered and, ofcourse, as in man, varies in each individual’s lifestyle. Your vet will be able to tell you the ideal weight for your pet andcan produce a tailored plan to burn off those calories. In dogs, longer, more frequent walks and ball games will helpto reduce weight. Cats often eat when they're bored. To help prevent this certain toys can be used to encourage theirplaying and moving about more. Another option to consider is getting them a play mate. Rabbits should be given lessof the high-energy commercial rabbit food and more good-quality hay and grass. The government iscurrently trying to reduce levels of obesity in the general population. Junk food and lack of exercise is blamed for anincreased occurrence of weight related diseases. Food & wine in itself is an interesting subject.Get it right and you create a harmonioussensory experience, enhancing the flavours ofboth food and wine. Get it wrong and theresult can lead to flavours that grate against each other. Giventhe expanse of the various cuisines in our midst, the task can besomewhat daunting.From my non-scientific background, I have neither the time norinclination to learn theories of taste compounds etc but adopt aweight and flavour approach. Put simply, light wines match lightfoods and heavier wines marry with heavier foods.Take, for example, a subtle and delicate fish such as sole andpartner it with a refreshing, light, crisp white wine such assauvignon blanc. A meatier fish like monkfish would pair verywell with a white wine of fuller body, such as a butteryChardonnay. Moving forward on the weight scale, a barbecuedrib eye steak would dominate a light red such as gamay or pinotnoir, but would stand up to the primary fruit and cracked pepperflavour profile of an Australian shiraz.The flavour aspect of this theory simply pin-points the wineaccording to the main flavour profile of the dish with which it isto be served, highlighted in the last example. Pork fillet in acreamy mushroom sauce would pair well with a lightly oakedchardonnay, whereas a pork based casserole with tomato saucewould taste amazing with a southern French wine withherbaceous aromas and flavours such as Fitou or I have alsopaired it with Chianti and it worked a treat.All in all, the best way to approach food and wine matching is tonote the distinctive aroma, flavour and weight profile whentasting a wine and start imagining what the wine couldaccompany in the food world. Oxfordshire Artweeks has become anannual tradition in Great Coxwell,involving the whole community.Villagers are asked to bake cakes and

quiches for the café, the church is open with its floralarrangements and plant stall and children from the villageattend art workshops, the results of which are on show in theReading Room café.

Sixteen local artists working in a wide variety of media willexhibit their work in five different venues in the village. This yearyou will be able to see painting, drawing, photography, stonecarving, ceramics, green woodworking, handmade books,jewellery and blacksmithing. Artweeks catalogues covering thewhole of Oxfordshire will be available as well as an Art Trail mapto guide you from the magnificent Great Barn, down throughthe village to the 12th century church of St. Giles. You can meetand talk to the artists and watch them demonstrate their skills.

Oxfordshire Artweeks in Great Coxwell will be open for visitorsfrom 11.00am. to 5.30pm. on the weekends of the 19th/20th and26th/27th May. Delicious coffees, lunches and teas will beavailable in the Reading Room cafe with proceeds sharedbetween the village park, Reading Room and St. Giles Church.

Followed by pan fried lime tuna steak with newpotatoes and salad and pork steaks marinated in cider & applesauce, with sautéed potatoes and green beans.The table service was very good, the food tasted delicious and theportion sizes more than generous.The dessert board offers a nice range of homemade puddings; sadlyneither of us had room left to give these a try. Maybe next time wewill forgo the starters as the couple on the table opposite wentoverboard about them.The Radnor Arms has its own on site micro brewery,( The Old ForgeBrewery) real ale has never been my thing, but I have to say theHammer & Tongs served from the cask was beautiful and I havebeen converted!There is a lovely outside eating area for those (hopefully) sunny,barmy evenings, good size car park and a children’s play area toaccommodate young families.A truly traditional pub offering a warm welcome and a great nightout!

Just a few months to go until the Faringdon Festival.The aim, as always, is to promote the town and this yearwe are marketing the festival outside of Faringdon. Inaddition to the Market Place music over the weekend,there will be a number of activities going on until 8.00pmat the new Skate park.There will be the usual large stage in the town centre andlive music from 7pm Friday until 6pm on the Sunday.There will be more for the kids to do in the town centrethis year too, with an array of stalls in the market place.Oxford Playhouse will be entertaining our 3-6 year oldson the Sunday with two actors and plenty of rubberducks. Thames Valley & Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust andthe Helen & Douglas House will be running a colouringcompetition and other children's activities. The i-cafe willalso be putting on competitions for all age groups. Theyare hoping to arrange a ball pool and other activities.Faze will be showing film footage in the i-cafe’s largeback room during the festival.The Snooty Mehmaan has sponsored the festival and willbe providing a range of traditional Indian Street Foodsand giving cookery demonstrations.

To make this all possible there are several fundraisingevents over the next couple of months.

May 25th/26th: The Trout at Lechlade is hosting a MayFest with "The Circus In Town". This will be a fullweekend of music with camping for £5 a pitch available.

June 4th: The Snooty Mehmaan provides Lazy MondayJazz and more. What a lovely way to end the bankholiday weekend sitting outside with some wonderfulmusic and food. Price tbc

June 14th: The Snooty Mehmaan is hosting a 70's, 80's& 90's Disco with Rod Green. The wonderful Rod isputting on a spectacular Disco & Light Show thatinvolves all our favourite music plus some music we mayhave forgotten. Buffet and Music night cost £20pp
