Our Lord Jesus Christ The King

SAVE YOURSELFThe attitude of “looking out for number one” reigns supreme in many

parts of our society, even in parts of our Church. That attitude informs the Gospel passage today, as we hear three times the challenge made to Jesus to “save himself” from his awful, humiliating death on the cross. The rulers of his own people sneer at him, the soldiers jeer at him, one of the criminals crucified with him reviles him; all treat him with scorn at his refusal or inability to “look out for number one,” to save himself. But if there is any doubt about the ability of Jesus to save, it is erased in his words to the other criminal: “Today you will be with me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43). If there is disbelief about the cross being the source of all salvation, reconciliation, and peace, it is eradicated in the Letter to the Colossians. Christ, in whom the fullness of all things dwells, the firstborn of all creation, is also the firstborn from the dead, and it is the blood of his cross that flows with the eternal life of heaven.

SAVE USIn Roman crucifixion, crosses had little plank seats upon which the

bodies of the crucified were propped. Their bodies, growing heavy with weakening and dying, would likely fall off without this seat. This seat, propping up the body of Jesus as it gasped for its final breaths, is the royal seat of our Savior and King. For us, he sat upon that most horrid throne. Like us, Jesus would agree that you have to look out for “number one.” The difference is that at the words “number one” he wouldn’t jab a jaunty thumb at his own chest. He’d extend a loving embrace between earth and heaven for each of us, the children of earth, the little ones in whom his own face shines. The rulers, the soldiers, one of the criminals, all were skeptical about the saving power of our King, because he would not—and they presumed could not—save himself. What this King shows all of us is that God’s power is to save us, to remember us in his kingdom, to take us with him to the light of Paradise.

Dear Parishioners,     This weekend we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King.  Our church calendar is a retelling of Salvation History from the beginning to the final appearance of the Lord Jesus in all glory, the end of time and the world as we know it.  Next weekend we begin the year, and the story, again with the first Sunday of Advent.  This "new" Church year marks the beginning of the three year cycle of readings we use at Sunday Mass.  We finish year "C" this weekend and begin year "A" next weekend.  Each year features readings from one of the synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke.  Each of the three cycles contain sections from the gospel of John, usually during Easter.  As we begin this sacred time let us strive to grow in our relationship with the Lord through a greater attention to the readings of Mass and commitment to living is such a way as to exhibit more kindness, encouragement, and prayer.  May our example bring our friends and family who have fallen away back to Mass and the sacraments as we journey together to the great Coming of Christ in glory.     Thanks to all who have responded to the United Catholic Appeal.  Let us reach our goal and go beyond for the good of the diocese and the glory of God.Have a great peace, filled Thanksgiving.Fr. TullyPS.  Don’t forget Mass on Thanksgiving Morning!

Solemnity of Christ the King Theme: In Christ, everything continues in being.Ordinary Time- For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding. Step 1: As you hear this familiar story of Jesus on the cross, what words or phrases catch your attention in this reading, what touches your heart?Step 2: Look into your life.Children: Jesus is always kind to those who love him. How so you show love for Jesus? Youth & Adults: This week we celebrate Christ the King in the best sense of the word, a King is someone who cares for the people under his care, and also has authority over them. When have you felt Jesus care for you? How do you allow Jesus to have authority over you?
