1. The Epidemic

 An all too familiar story....

Sara was a powerful career woman who was movin up the ran!s of her orani"ation# or at

least she used to $e. %ver since Sara raduated from collee with a deree in $usinessmanaement her oal was to reach an e&ecutive position at a fortune '(( company.

Her personal drive and motivation s!yroc!et her past many of her peers and she was soonreconi"ed $y manaement as a hard wor!er who could et the important tas!s done. Sarawould often $e the first at her office and stay at wor! lon after everyone would leave. )n fact#she *uic!ly ained the reputation of the hardest wor!er at her office which was somethinthat she was very proud of.

Sara+s career advancement continued movin riht alon until one day she cauht the flu andhad to stay at home for over a wee!. After that she found it difficult to reain the speed that

she once had and e&perienced a handful of illnesses over the ne&t couple of months.,othin was ever considered very serious $ut with each episode she could feel her eneryslowly fade away.

%ven when she wasn+t sic!# she noticed that it re*uired more effort to do the very wor! thatused to seem so easy to do. )n addition# she found it more difficult to concentrate $ecauseher head often felt -cloudy. Sleep also $ecame an issue and she often would wa!e up -tireddespite a ood niht sleep. She started to rely on more and more coffee to et oin in themornin and even then never really felt awa!e until closer to noon. Worst of all# she wouldoften crash in the mid/afternoon and have to fiht the ure to 0ust lie down and rest. Overall#Sara notice that she was $ecomin more irrita$le and impatient with everyone and

everythin# includin herself.

1urin the evenin hours after dinner Sara would often feel $etter than she had all day#especially if she ate a ood super. 2his sure of enery would last several hours until closerto 345( she would start to feel tired aain. ,eedin to catch up from wor! however# Sarawould often find that if she would drin! a cup of coffee she could power throuh and oftenfound that she would catch a second wind that would ta!e her to 64(( or 74(( A8. She foundthat she did her $est wor! durin those early mornin hours.

Another chane that Sara $ean to notice was her food ha$its. She often found herselfcravin sweet snac! such as donuts and pastries with her coffee in the mornin. And in theafternoon she would desire somethin salty and often found herself indulin on potato chipsand pret"els. 1ue to her demandin wor! schedule# she would often find it difficult to $rea!for a proper meal $ut now that seemed to come with more conse*uences than it once did. )nthe past# she could often et away with s!ippin a meal $ut now she found that she wouldoften et $rain fo# fatiue and other distur$in symptoms.

At the end of most days Sara often felt e&hausted# even if her day wasn+t very productive. She $ean to e&perience some mild depression and where she used to $e optimistic# shewas now discouraed. She no loner had the drive and am$ition she once had and simplywas now 0ust tryin to ma!e it throuh the day.

9oncerned a$out her lac! of enery and mental lows# she consulted her primary physician. Her doctor evaluated her and did some $lood wor! to determine her health status. On herfollow up visit# Sara was informed that her la$s loo!ed normal and that nothin was wronwith her. She was encouraed to stop worryin so much and to may$e ta!e it easier at her

0o$. Sara *uic!ly pointed out that her 0o$ was very demandin and that wor!in less was notan option for her. As a result# her doctor prescri$ed an anti/an&iety dru to help her calm

down and cope with the demands of her 0o$.

Unfortunately# the medication only made Sara feel worse and she ended up consultin withseveral more physicians. 2he dianosis was always the same# nothin was wron with herla$s and her main pro$lem was simply -in her head. %ventually Sara ended up with areferral to a psychiatrist and a ca$inet full of prescriptions. 1iscouraed# Sara ave uploo!in for answers and resined to 0ust drain herself throuh life# discouraed#depressed and continually fatiued.

6s tragic as this story is, it is a common one that I hear /rom the patients that I consult 'ith inmy practice# $oo many talented ambitions 'omen and men are e@periencing these verysymptoms and are le/t 'ithout an e@planation or a guide on ho' to regain their health#

$he most common symptoms that I see in my practice are an inability to lose 'eight, /atigue,depression, >I issues and hormonal imbalances# 6nd despite our medical advancementsand billions o/ dollars spent on research annually, our population as a 'hole continues tobecome sicker and sicker#

$oday, more people are being diagnosed and are su//ering 'ith chronic diseases than at anyother time in history# iseases that 'ere non1e@istent during our parents and grandparentsli/etimes are no' a//ecting large parts o/ our population and bankrupting us /inancially#

6lthough 'e have made many positive medical advancements, those su//ering 'ith 'eightstruggles, /atigue, depression, hormonal imbalances, and >I issues remain at an all time high#

6nd like Sara, i/ you are someone 'ho is su//ering 'ith any o/ these symptoms, chances areyou have looked /or ans'ers, visited healthcare providers, and even tried medications orsupplements# 6nd like the many patients I encounter, you 'ere most likely told that your labslooked /ine, had your symptoms dismissed, and possibly prescribed a /orm o/ an anti1an@ietymedication# O/ course, this only /urther concerned you because you kno' something is o//and you end up leaving 'ith additional concerns and 'ithout the ans'ers you 'ere seeking#

Or, i/ your doctor happened to be a little more thorough, they may have tested your hormonesor your thyroid gland and discovered that some o/ your levels 'ere not optimal# I/ this 'asthe case, chances are you 'ere put on some sort o/ thyroid medication or hormonereplacement and 'ere not only told that you 'ould need to be on it /or the “rest o/ your li/e”,but you 'ould need to routinely have the doses monitored and changed#

I/ this sounds at all /amiliar, you are not alone! 6s I previously stated, this is an all toocommon story and un/ortunately are the results o/ an over'helmed medical system, specialinterests, and outdated dogma#

$oday7s medical pro/essionals are in a tricky position# $hey are o/ten over'orked 'ith highvolumes o/ patients and are simply unable to devote the necessary time to discuss your

Page 7: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

8/12/2019 The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

health status in detail# O/ course they have a true desire to see you healthy, but the lu@ury o/learning about your uni5ue health status is 0ust not realistic# Instead, they are /orced to 'orkin a system 'ith strict guidelines 'hen it comes to time restraints and protocols they must/ollo' 'hen evaluating and treating your symptoms#

Speaking o/ symptoms, treating and eliminating your symptoms is the primary goal o/ most

doctors# I/ your presenting complaint is eliminated as a result o/ the medication theyprescribe you, it is deemed a success and their 0ob done# $his is e@actly 'hat medication isdesigned to do# It is a chemical agent that creates a physiological change in your body tomake a particular symptom disappear# %ave pain, take an anti1in/lammatory# %ave highblood pressure, take a beta blocker# %ave high cholesterol, take a statin# 4our progesteroneis lo', simply add more to it# Un/ortunately, ho'ever, the true underlying cause is neverevaluated and is 'hy you /ind yoursel/ dependent on these drugs /or the rest o/ your li/e#

9hen you present to your doctor complaining o/ /atigue, 'eight gain, depression, hormonalimbalances, or >I issues they 'ill run labs that have been “determined” to be best to evaluateyour health# $ypically this consists o/ some basic blood markers, as 'ell as, a 'eight andblood pressure reading# 8arely is any comprehensive testing ordered that may provide amore complete look at 'hat your underlying issues may be# Instead they /ollo' theguidelines and order the labs 'hich have been determined to be the standard o/ care# 6nd'ho determines the standard o/ care and 'hat the best labs areG ost o/ the time it isinsurance companies, %O7s, and guidelines that 'ere established decades ago# In other'ords, it is not usually based on the latest clinical 0ournals or breakthroughs in lab testing#

6gain, it is not al'ays the doctor7s /ault# any are simply trapped in a system 'ith guidelinesand parameters that o/ten highly scrutini?e doctors 'ho “think outside the bo@”# I hear this allthe time /rom my medical peers and /rom patients 'ho are re/used certain labs by theirdoctors because their net'ork 'ould /ro'n on them /or going outside the norm# 6s a result, many patients are le/t su//ering 'ith symptoms despite “normal” lab results and /aith/ullytaking medications and supplements#

In my clinical e@perience I have /ound that, in many cases, the number one reason that mostpeople su//er 'ith an inability to lose 'eight, /atigue, depression, hormonal imbalances, and>I issues can be traced back to a very common culprit in our society# $his culprit is singlehandily responsible /or disrupting your endocrine system, destroying your >I tract, andnegatively e//ecting your neurotransmitters#

9ho is this master destroyer o/ healthG S$8ESS! $hat7s right, stress is the C+ destroyer o/health in our modern society and is responsible /or creating a cascade o/ negative e//ects inyour body# 6s a result o/ stress, your adrenal glands must produce a certain hormone and theabundance o/ this hormone is 'hat 'reaks havoc on your body#

In severe cases, like Sara7s, too much stress over a long period o/ time actually drains yourbody o/ this natural hormone and leads to a condition kno'n as 6drenal =atigue# 6drenal=atigue is a very serious health condition, and in my clinical e@perience, has been acontributing /actor to almost all o/ the individuals that I have helped#

-earning ho' to measure the a//ects o/ stress on your body and ho' to properly support yourbody so that healing can occur, is /undamental to regaining your health# In this guide I am

going to e@plain e@actly 'hat 6drenal =atigue is, ho' your hormones play a role in yourhealth, and strategies you can use to support and heal your body#

I/ you have never heard o/ 6drenal =atigue be/ore you are not alone# In /act, most o/ myclients had never heard o/ it either be/ore coming into my o//ice# 6/ter e@plaining to theme@actly 'hat it 'as and ho' it e//ects their health, ho'ever, they reali?ed 5uickly that it 'as

de/initely a root cause to their health concerns# So let me e@plain to you 'hat it is no'######

2.Adrenal Glands and Your Health

6lthough the term 6drenal =atigue may not be “mainstream” or something most doctorsdiscuss or even kno' about, the common symptoms that it mani/est certainly are# So manypeople su//er 'ith the common symptoms o/ 6drenal =atigue that I and other healthcare

practitioners have dedicated our entire practice on treating them#

$he most common signs and symptoms o/ 6drenal =atigue are"

• Difficulty getting up in the morning# .o matter ho' many alarms or ho' loud theyare1 you don7t /eel a'ake enough to li/t your head o// the pillo'#

• eeling !tired" despite getting sleep.  espite getting a good night7s sleep, you still/eel tired 'hen you 'ake up# 8e/reshed is a /oreign 'ord to people 'ith adrenal /atigue#

• Can#t get enough salt or salty foods.  4ou /ind yoursel/ eating the 'hole bag o/ chips

or adding salt to already salted /oods#

• $ac% of energy &$ethargy'.  Everything seems like a chore, even the things you usedto en0oy# =re5uently, 0ust getting up out o/ the chair re5uires too much energy#

• Every day tasks seems to re5uire increased e//ort# Everything seems to re5uired tentimes as much e//ort as it should#

• Decreased se( dri)e.  Se@ is the last thing on your mind 'hen you hardly have theenergy to keep your head up#

• Decreased a*ility to handle stress.  -ittle things seem like a big deal# 8oad rage, constant an@iety, yelling at your kids, and compulsive eating, smoking or drug use let youkno' your adrenals are crying out /or help#

• Decreased Immune system.  $he cold you got in October is still hanging on in.ovember# $he cut on your /inger takes 'eeks to heal# $'o years a/ter your /ather died youare still incapacitated by grie/#

• +tanding up too ,uic%ly causes you to feel light-headed. Sometimes you /eel likeyou are going to pass out 'hen you get up /rom the bed or a chair#

• ild depression.  9hy bother making an e//ort, it all seems so pointlessG

• $ess en/oyment or happiness 0ith life.  .ot much seems to interest you any more#9ork and relationships /eel empty and you almost never do something 0ust /or /un#

• Increased +.  Bloated, tired, crabby, cramping and craving chocolate1 does it getany 'orse than thisG

Page 10: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-adrenal-code-unlocking-the-secrets-to-obtaining-the-body-you-desire 10/53

• +ymptoms increase if meals are s%ipped or inade,uate.  4ou have to drive yoursel/'ith snacks, colas and co//ee 0ust to keep /rom collapsing#

• uy headed.  4ou /re5uently lose track o/ your train o/ thought and it is harder tomake decisions, even about little things like 'hat to 'ear#

•emory less accurate.  4ou7ve lost the keys so many times your spouse is

threatening to attach them to you#

• Decreased tolerance.  Aeople seem a lot more irritating than they used to#

• Don#t really 0a%e up until 13433 A5 you !crash" *et0een 6433 and 7433 5 youfeel *etter after e)ening meal.  4ou shu//le through your morning routines 'ith the help o/co//ee and sugar until around +* 6 'hen you /eel productive# $his lasts until you eat lunch,and then your ready /or a nap around F pm# 4ou can7t seem to 'ind do'n a/ter dinner o/tenmaking it di//icult to /all asleep#

• Decreased producti)ity.  It takes you longer to complete tasks and it is harder to stayon task#

.o single one o/ these symptoms gives a de/initive diagnosis o/ 6drenal =atigue, but takencollectively as a syndrome, they strongly suggest its presence# I/ you are currently su//ering'ith one or many o/ these it is a clear sign that something needs to change i/ you 'ant to /eel'ell again#

$o better understand ho' the adrenals are related to your speci/ic symptoms I am going toe@plain their role in the /ive most common symptoms that I see in my practice#

8eight $oss +truggles

I can7t tell you ho' many times I hear patients e@plain to me the their 'eight 0ust seems“stuck” on them# $hey e@ercise and diet but, /or 'hatever reason, they 0ust can7t breakthrough that 'eight loss plateau# $hey may have never struggled 'ith 'eight in the past butno', all has changed and they are slo'ly gaining 'eight and don7t kno' 'hat to do about it#

I/ this sounds /amiliar to you1 you7re not alone# In /act, your 'eight issues are probably noteven your /ault! $here is a very good chance that your inability to lose 'eight has a very realcause that simply needs to be addressed# In my e@perience, most o/ the time the cause hasto do 'ith your cortisol levels and your body7s ability to break do'n /at and use it /or energy#

(ortisol is a “gucocorticosteriod” 'hich is a /ancy name to say that it assists insulin 'ith bloodsugar handling# (ortisol is responsible /or breaking do'n /at cells and other cells in the bodyto convert into energy# -et me e@plain###

9hen you eat /ood your body has several options as to 'hat to do 'ith the sugar ;glucose<that enters your blood# Sugar is to@ic to blood, so the body must either utili?e it immediately/or energy, or remove it and store it in a sa/e place /or /uture needs# $he three storageoptions that the body has is the -iver, uscle cells, and =at cells# 6/ter the body converts

Page 11: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

8/12/2019 The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-adrenal-code-unlocking-the-secrets-to-obtaining-the-body-you-desire 11/53

glucose into the storage /orm called glycogen it 'ill shuttle it to either the liver, muscle cells,or store it as /at# Both the -iver and the muscle cells have some'hat o/ a limited storagecapacity so once they are /ull your body 'ill store the remainder as /at ;some o/ us have moreo/ this storage place than 'e 'ould like<#

9hen your body demands energy it 'ill re5uire o/ you one o/ t'o things# It 'ill either demand

that you /eed it or it 'ill go to one o/ the storage tanks that you have and convert its contentsto glucose# $he storage tank o/ pre/erence is your /at cells ;yeah!< but it can only utili?e itscontents i/ there is an ade5uate amount o/ cortisol available#

9hen your body has been burdened by chronic stress ;chemical, emotional, or physical< youradrenal glands have to produce large amounts o/ cortisol# $he longer the stress is presentthe longer the adrenal glands must produce the cortisol# Eventually, your adrenal glands 'ill/atigue and your cortisol production 'ill go do'n# 9ith lo' cortisol levels no', your ability tobreak do'n the /at cells and use them /or energy is virtually non1e@istent# 8egardless o/ youre@ercise intensity or your diet restrictions, you 'ill struggle to burn /at#

$o make matters 'orse, you actually begin to store /at! Because your body “believes” thatyou do not have enough /at cells /or energy1 because your body isn7t using them as a result o/lo' cortisol1 it 'ill help you out by storing /at# O/ coarse this is no good to you because lacko/ /at is not your problem, lack o/ cortisol is# .ot until you allo' your adrenals to properly restand repair, allo'ing your cortisol levels to increase, 'ill you ever success/ully lose /at andkeep it o//#

One o/ the most common complaints that I hear 'ith my patients is that they are “tired” all o/the time# .o matter ho' much sleep they get or 'hat time they go to bed, they 0ust can7t“catch up” on their sleep and constantly /eel tired# I/ this sounds like something you 'ouldsay then your adrenal glands de/initely need to be checked#

I like to vie' (ortisol as units o/ energy# $he more cortisol1 the more energy you have#Individuals 'ho are chronically tired and /atigued typically su//er /rom lo' levels o/ cortisol#

6s a result o/ our hectic li/estyles and schedules, our adrenal glands are constantly inoverdrive trying to keep up 'ith the demands that 'e place on them# &ust like a tank o/ gasthat 'ill run dry i/ the accelerator is constantly pressed, your cortisol levels 'ill deplete as aresult o/ chronic stress in your li/e#

(ortisol operates on 'hat is called a circadian cycle#

(ortisol is highest in the morning in order to 'ake you up and give you the energy necessaryto hit the ground running# 6s the day progresses these levels decrease until evening 'here

the lo'er levels allo' you to go to sleep# $he cycle repeats itsel/ by rising throughout thenight until you 'ake up again and a ne' day is started#

I/ you /ind that you need co//ee, energy drinks, or a shot o/ sugar in the arm 0ust to get up andmoving in the morning1 chances are your cortisol level is too lo'#

Gastrointestinal Issues

It is becoming more and more prevalent in my practice to encounter individuals 'ith somesort o/ gastrointestinal complaint# Bet'een acid re/lu@, constant bloating, constipation, irritable bo'l, and /re5uent gas, almost all o/ my patients in/orm me that they su//er 'ith

something related to their digestion#

(ertainly the Standard 6merican iet ;S6< is a contributing /actor to many o/ my patient7sailments, but is that the only thing a//ecting their healthG 6pparently not#

In response to stress your adrenal glands secrete cortisol# 9hen you are under chronicstress ;like most 6mericans today< your adrenal glands secret tons o/ cortisol# (ortisol itsel/is not a bad thing, in /act it is used in many very important processes in the body, but toomuch o/ it can be# (ortisol has many /unctions in the body but mainly it helps us 'ith the

necessary energy to =ight or =light# In other 'ords, it provides the necessary energy /or us toeither /ight a threat or run /rom a threat by utili?ing certain organs and muscles and shuntingothers#

One o/ the organs that doesn7t get proper blood supply during a high stress situation is yourgastrointestinal tract# I/ you think about it, it makes per/ect sense# 9hy 'ould your body care

about properly digesting your /ood i/ you had to either /ight /or your li/e or run /or your li/eG It'ouldn7t!

%ave you ever heard that you shouldn7t s'im or do other strenuous e@ercises directly a/tereatingG Ever 'ondered 'hy that 'asG It is because a/ter you eat, in order to properly digestyour /ood your body must send large amounts o/ blood to your gastrointestinal tract# .ot onlydoes this makes your body properly propel your /ood along the intestines, but also allo's /orproper absorption o/ nutrients#

9hen you are engaged in intense activity such as s'imming or running, large amounts o/blood must go to your skeletal muscles instead# 6s a result, less blood is available /or otherorgans like your gastrointestinal tract and can cause cramping in the stomach and disrupt theproper digestion o/ your /ood# Improperly digested /ood can irritate the cell lining o/ yourgastrointestinal tract 'hich 'ill disrupt your natural /lora and make you more susceptible toinvaders such as bad bacteria, yeast, and parasites#

Irritated intestinal cells are the leading cause o/ the most prevalent >I symptoms like bloating, constipation, acid re/lu@, cramping, and irritable bo'el# 6s I mentioned above, the leadingcause o/ irritated intestinal cells is improperly digesting your /ood# 6nd although many o/ usdon7t s'im or go running directly a/ter a meal, most o/ us do not take the proper amount o/time to eat and are constantly bombarded 'ith constant stress#

See, your body can7t decipher bet'een you /ighting a bear to stay alive and you 0uggling a'ork and carpool schedule# .or can it determine i/ you are running /rom a tiger or dealing'ith the death o/ a loved one# In all o/ these cases your body is secreting large amounts o/cortisol and disrupting your body7s ability to properly digest your /ood# 6s a result, yourintestinal cells 'ill become irritated and symptoms 'ill develop#

9ithout properly addressing your stress levels and providing the necessary support /or youradrenal glands, your ability to eliminate many o/ your gastrointestinal issues 'ill not e@ist#$his is 'hy proper testing and healing is key to a /ull recovery#

Depression

Statistics sho' that appro@imately + out o/ every +* adults are diagnosed 'ith depression# O/adults, 'omen ages H1 years o/ age seem to be a//ected the most# Based on my clinicale@perience, I can attest /irst hand to this#

It seems that more and more o/ my patients are e@periencing depression like symptoms andmany o/ them have been prescribed an anti1depressant or at least discussed it 'ith theirdoctor# 9hy the sudden increase o/ depression in our societyG 6re things really that badG

 6re 'e 0ust not capable o/ handing the demands o/ daily modern li/eG

Page 14: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

In some instances I strongly believe that individuals truly have an imbalances that must beaddressed 'ith medication# %aving said that, I also believe that the ma0ority o/ individuals'ho are su//ering 'ith depression1like symptoms can actually /ully recover 'ithout the use o/medication#

-et me e@plain# Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that is associated 'ith mood and 'ell

being# 9hen our brain has an ample supply o/ it 'e have the perception o/ /eeling good and'hen it is in lo'er concentrations 'e develop the common symptoms associated 'ithdepression# 9hat happens to individuals 'ho begin to e@perience depression1like symptomsis that their production o/ serotonin has decreased# 9hat most individuals and many doctorsdon7t reali?e is, the ma0ority o/ serotonin that an individual makes occurs in theirgastrointestinal tract# Special cells called enterochroma//in cells are responsible /or producingover K*L o/ your total serotonin level# 9hat this means is that the real cause o/ mostdepression1like symptoms is a gastrointestinal disturbance!

$his is very important to kno' because unless you address the gastrointestinal issues, you'ill never /ully recover /rom depression# $his is 'hy so many individuals on anti1depressantsdon7t ever get lasting results# $hey either have to up their dosage or s'itch drugs in order tomaintain results# $he drugs most commonly prescribed /or depression do nothing to addressthe gastrointestinal tract and only mask the problem by tricking the brain into thinking it hasenough serotonin supply#

6s stated earlier, one o/ the biggest culprits to gastrointestinal issues is high (ortisol levels#9hen 'e are under large amounts o/ stress, cortisol is released in large amounts anddisrupts the natural /lora o/ our gut# $his chronic in/lammation 'reaks havoc on the cellsincluding the enterochroma//in cells responsible /or serotonin production# 6s a result, youproduce less serotonin and the symptoms o/ depression ensue#

=or lasting results you must /irst test and support your adrenal glands# Only then can yourcorrectly address your gastrointestinal issues, heal the enterochroma//in cells and return yourserotonin levels back to normal#

Hormonal Im*alances

$his by /ar is the most prevalent complaint that I receive /rom my patients# 9omen ;and men<o/ten tell me that they don7t believe that their hormones are properly 'orking# any o/ them,ho'ever, have brought this concern up to other doctors, and in many cases have had themtested, but have simply been told that their hormones 'ere /ine#

I can7t tell you ho' many times I have heard a 'oman say “I de/initely /eel that my hormonesare disrupted but my test results said everything is OD”# y /ollo' up 5uestion is al'ays“ho'” 'as your hormones tested and e@actly 'hat did they test /orG

ost doctors 'hen looking into hormone disruptions test a couple very distinct hormones#$ypically, they 'ill take a blood sample and test your levels o/ Etradiol ;estrogen<,Arogesterone, and $estosterone# I call these the Big F, and they are very important in bothmen and 'omen#

Page 15: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

9hen these hormones are not in proper balance they can cause a myriad o/ di//erentsymptoms including"

• =atigue

• epression

• Irritability

• AS• In/ertility

• .ight S'eats

• 9eight gain

So it is no surprise that many doctors are 5uick to check these levels# Un/ortunately,ho'ever, these levels are 0ust part o/ the story and a bigger /actor is being ignored#

6s you can imagine, your endocrine ;hormonal< system is very comple@ and is comprised o/many di//erent hormones and processes that make it 'ork# $ake a look at the hormonecascade"

6s you produce more and more cortisol, as a result o/ chronic stress, the pregnenolonesupply is diverted into that path'ay#

6s a result, your other hormones like Arogesterone, Estrogen, and $estosterone arecompromised# .o', 'hen you are tested by your doctor they may discover a de/iciency inthose hormones and recommend some sort o/ hormone replacement therapy# But i/ you 0ustadd some $estosterone or Estrogen into your system are you truly addressing the underlyingproblemG

9hat most 'omen ;and men< discover 'ith hormone treatment is that it seldom gives lastingresults# In /act, they o/ten /ind that they must continually have their doses change assymptoms plateau or return# $his is primarily because the “true” underlying cause 'as neveraddressed#

8arely do doctors properly address the complete hormone cascade and the role that cortisolplays on it# 6s I mentioned earlier, adrenal testing is seldom done in mainstream medicineand, as a result, is o/ten ignored#

9hat about your $hyroidG any hormonal symptoms can be a result o/ a $hyroid that is not'orking properly# %aving said that, many 'omen get their $hyroid tested only to be told that

everything is /ine# $hose that do get a diagnosis o/ a $hyroid problem are o//ered medication/or the rest o/ their lives#

6ccording to the Ahysician2s esk 8e/erence, 'hen addressing a thyroid problem one shouldalso /irst consider adrenal involvement# 9hat this means is that be/ore your doctor 'orks onyour thyroid they should /irst look at your adrenal glands! %o' many doctor7s do you think

actually do thisG

In my clinical e@perience, almost every patient that enters my o//ice 'ith some sort o/ thyroiddys/unction also has an adrenal issue# $his is because these t'o glands are so closely tiedtogether# In /act, in my o//ice most thyroid issues are corrected simply by supporting andhealing the adrenal glands# Even 'omen 'ho have been on thyroid medications /or yearscan o/ten regain enough thyroid /unction to discontinue their medication#

I/ you are currently su//ering 'ith hormonal issues you must get your adrenals properly tested#9ithout /irst addressing this underlying issue your hope o/ regaining proper hormonal balanceis non e@istent#

6re you starting to see ho' 6drenal =atigue plays a very big role in the current epidemicplaguing so many 'omen in our society# (an you see ho' your adrenal health could be theunderlying /actor in your current symptomsG .e@t I am going to discuss e@actly 'hat theadrenal glands are and ho' stress plays a role in their health and /unction####

6.+tress and Adrenal Health

Anatomy of the Adrenal Glands

$he adrenal glands sit on top o/ the kidneys near the spine, 0ust underneath the last ;t'el/th<rib and e@tending do'n about an inch# Each is only about +” high by ++: “to )” 'ide by +:”thick, and 'eighs 0ust F+:) to H grams, 'ith the males7 adrenals usually being slightly largerand heavier than the /emale7s#

Both adrenal glands are only a very short distance /rom the aorta, the ma0or artery o/ thebody, and the vena cava, the ma0or vein# $his strategic placement allo's /or a very rapidadrenal response to hormonal messages transported via the blood# In the tremendous'isdom o/ the body, the adrenals are also placed in close pro@imity to the liver, pancreas,

ma0or /at storage areas and the kidneys, as these are the organs that need rapidcommunication 'ith the adrenals in situations re5uiring their immediate response to adrenalhormones#

hysiology of the Adrenal Glands

$he adrenal glands are responsible /or the release o/ cortisol, as 'ell as, other importanthormones# $he amount o/ cortisol circulating at any particular moment is regulated by acomple@ interaction bet'een the hypothalamus ;part o/ the brain<, the pituitary gland at thebase o/ the brain, and the adrenal glands# $his regulatory trio operates through a negative/eedback system and is re/erred to as the %ypothalamus: Aituitary: 6drenal ;%A6< 6@is or %A6

System#

6 negative /eedback system 'orks like the thermostat in a house or apartment# $hethermostat senses the heat in the room and compares it 'ith the desired temperature it hasbeen set to# 9hen the heat gets too lo', the thermostat signals the relay s'itch to tell the/urnace to ignite, sending out hot air into the room and raising the heat# 9hen the heat hasrisen to the desired level, the thermostat signals the /urnace to 5uit until more heat is needed#$his cycle is called a negative /eedback system because 'hen enough heat is released, anegative signal is sent to slo' or stop the input#

In your body, your hypothalamus is like a thermostat, your pituitary like a relay s'itch, youradrenals like the /urnace, and your body is the room# $he amount o/ cortisol released iscomparable to the heat released /rom the /urnace# $o a large e@tent you control thethermostat through the demands you place on your body# $hese demands arise /rom thephysical situations your body has to deal 'ith ;diet, e@ercise, 'ork, climate, etc#< and your

8e Don#t 9ust Hunt and Gather

$he release o/ cortisol in response to stress is a very important /unction that 'as intelligentlydesigned# 6s our bodies perceive stress, cortisol does a myriad o/ important /unctionsthroughout the body to help us deal 'ith it ;more detailed e@planation later<# 6/ter the stress

is gone or removed, ho'ever, the cortisol levels in our body naturally decrease back tonormal#

In early human times 'e 'ere a species o/ hunters and gatherers# 9e had to physically goout and kill our /ood in order to survive# 6s you can imagine, /ighting beasts and other preyre5uired great energy and concentration# $he cortisol 'ould spike during these hunts to giveour ancestors the greatest advantage to achieve their goal o/ killing their prey# 6/ter the hunt,ho'ever, they 'ould return to camp, cook the /ood, and en0oy a period o/ rest# .aturally, theircortisol levels 'ould decrease, their adrenals 'ould rest, and they 'ould be ready /or the ne@tbig task at hand#

$oday 'e don7t have to necessarily hunt our /oods or do 'e regularly come in contact 'ithdangerous animals that threaten our lives, but our adrenal glands are o/ten in “over1drive”#ue to our hectic schedules and the demands o/ modern li/e 'e seldom /ind the necessarydo'n time re5uired to allo' our adrenal glands the chance to rest and repair# 6s a result, ourbody is disrupted by abnormal cortisol levels and the myriad o/ symptoms associated 'ith it#

So o/ten in my practice I hear the stories o/ men and 'omen 'ho are constantly attempting tokeep their head above 'ater# $hey are pulled by personal obligations and pro/essional drivesin so many directions that they can7t seem to keep up anymore# espite their attempts o/“rest” they never /eel like they catch up and the things that they once /ound easy to achieveare much more di//icult no'# $hey are o/ten “tired” all o/ the time1 regardless o/ the amount o/sleep, struggle 'ith 'eight loss1 despite diet and e@ercise, many develop /eelings o/depression, and almost all o/ them have symptoms o/ hormonal imbalances#

It#s All A*out the +tress

$he ma0or sources o/ stress can be classi/ied in three primary categories" Emotional,(hemical, and Ahysical# 6lmost every single one o/ us deal 'ith at least one o/ these sourcesdaily and in many cases all o/ these#

Emotional Stress

• Every single one o/ us has had to deal 'ith some sort o/ Emotional stress# $he topsources o/ emotional stress are"

• eath o/ a loved one

• ivorce or end o/ relationship

• 8elationship di//iculties, /re5uent arguments

• (hange in residence

• Over'ork, or termination o/ employment

• Aregnancy

•  6ddition to /amily

• Outstanding personal achievement ;graduation, promotion<

• =inancial stress ;mortgage, loans<

• Aersonal in0ury or illness

I/ you are like most o/ the people I 'ork 'ith in my practice you probably have had to deal'ith several o/ these i/ not most o/ them# Every time you deal 'ith one o/ these sources o/

stress your adrenal glands must go into over1drive in order to combat the demand on yourbody# I/ you chronically have to deal 'ith one o/ these sources then your adrenal glandsnever get the re5uired rest to repair and 'ill eventually lead to 6drenal “Burn1out” or =atigue#

(hemical Stress

9e live in a 'orld o/ synthetic chemicals and to@ins# 6ccording to the Environment Arotection 6gency ;EA6< there are over M*,*** registered chemicals used in our daily products 'ith over+,H** ne' chemicals introduced every year# 6nd to make matters 'orse only appro@imately+H,*** o/ them have ever been tested /or sa/ety! 6s a result, 'e are constantly bombarded'ith chemicals that our bodies have to deal 'ith# Our livers and other organs, such as the

adrenal glands, must 'ork longer and harder to deal 'ith this constant to@ic demand# &ustlike anything that is over'orked, your liver becomes sluggish and your adrenal glandsbecome /atigued, resulting in symptoms such as 'eight gain and other hormonal imbalances#

6nother /orm o/ chemical onslaught comes in the /orm o/ our /ood choices# Sugar, ca//eine,alcohol, and substances such as /ood dyes and arti/icial s'eeteners all put burdens on ourbodies# Sugar and ca//eine are t'o o/ the biggest culprits 'hen it comes to a//ecting youradrenal glands# Sugar spikes your insulin and cortisol demands 'hen consumed# $he moresugar you consume the more demand /or your adrenals to produce cortisol# Similarly,ca//eine triggers the adrenal glands to release cortisol to arti/icially high levels# $hese highdemands tire and /atigue the adrenal glands and result in those mid1morning and a/ternoon

“crashes”#

Ahysical Stress

Our bodies produce a natural anti1in/lammatory called cortisone# 4ou7re probably /amiliar 'iththis name as it is the same substance that physicians use to in0ect and prescribe /or pain#4our adrenals produce cortisone along 'ith cortisol in response to pain and in/lammation thatis occurring in your body# 9hen in0ury occurs in your body your adrenal glands 'ill releasecortisone to decrease the immune response and lessen the in/lammation and pain# I/ yousu//er /rom a chronic knee, neck, 'rist, shoulder, or any other type o/ pain, your adrenalglands are constantly having to produce high levels o/ cortisol and cortisone# o this long

enough and the supply tank 'ill run dry leaving you in a constant state o/ pain andin/lammation# $his is o/ten 'hy so many people su//er /rom chronic neck, back and 0oint paindespite the medications and treatment options that they have tried#

Three +tages of :urnout

6s you can see, stress is e@tremely prevalent in our modern society and is a leading cause tomany o/ the chronic symptoms that plague our population# 9hen stress isn7t properly dealt

Page 24: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

'ith and eliminated our adrenal glands are negatively a//ected and eventually become “burnout” or “/atigued”# $here are F stages o/ adrenal burnout#

+tage 1 ; +tress <)erload

9hatever the source o/ stress, your body2s initial reaction is the same" the adrenal glandsmake more o/ the stress hormones cortisol and %E6# $his /irst stage o/ hormonalmaladaptation is called hyperadrenia, or over activity o/ the adrenal glands# .ormally, 'henthe stress dissipates, the glands have time to recondition and prepare /or the ne@t stress/ulevent#

%o'ever, i/ your stress levels remain high, your body 'ill remain locked in this /irst stage o/adrenal stress# I/ your stress hormone levels remain elevated /or e@tended periods o/ time, your body2s ability to recover can be reduced and the ability o/ your adrenals to make cortisoland %E6 can be compromised#

6nother 'ay to look at this is to think o/ your adrenal reserve as a savings account# I/ youcontinually 'ithdra' money /rom savings and don2t replace it, you are eventually unable torecover /inancially# =atigue and other adrenal symptoms are signs that your body2s reservehas been overdra'n and your adrenals are becoming e@hausted# I/ the stress continues, thehigh levels o/ cortisol and %E6 begin to drop# 6s the high levels o/ these hormones can nolonger be sustained, a person enters into stage t'o o/ adrenal e@haustion#

+tage 2 ; atigue

Some individuals have genetically strong adrenal glands and can maintain health under highlevels o/ stress /or many years# Others may enter into stage t'o more 5uickly# Eventually, i/'e continue to e@perience e@cess stress, 'e enter into stage t'o o/ adrenal e@haustion# $histransition period usually lasts bet'een si@ and eighteen months during 'hich the stressresponse o/ the adrenal glands is gradually compromised#

Under chronic stress conditions the adrenals eventually “burn out#” 6t this point the glandsbecome /atigued and can no longer sustain an ade5uate response to stress# $his conditionultimately leads to stage three or hypoadrenalism#

+tage 6 ; E(haustion

In stage three o/ adrenal maladaptation the glands have been depleted o/ their ability toproduce cortisol and %E6 in su//icient amounts and no' it becomes more and more di//icult/or the body to recover# (onstant /atigue and lo'1level depression can appear in other'iseemotionally healthy people because cortisol and %E6 help maintain mood, emotionalstability and energy levels#

6s cortisol and %E6 levels are depressed, people e@perience depressed mental /unction#Brain /unction su//ers as these hormones are depleted# Both poor memory and mentalcon/usion can be a direct result o/ adrenal hormone depletion#

Cortisol and Your Health

%aving proper amounts o/ cortisol in your body is essential to your health# I/ you have toomuch due to chronic stress it 'ill 'reak havoc on your body such as immune suppression, >Iirritation, and high blood pressure# I/ you have too little due to your adrenals beingover'orked and /atigued then you 'ill have hormonal imbalances, /atigue, depression, and

'eight loss issues#

Over the years o/ 'orking 'ith patients it has become apparent that 'ith most individuals thehealth o/ their adrenal glands are the underlying source o/ many o/ their symptoms# 9ithout/ail, a/ter properly evaluating the adrenal glands and providing the necessary support, thesesymptoms disappear and stay a'ay /or good#

6s you can imagine my patients are thrilled 'ith these results but o/ten struggle to understand'hy their “regular” doctor or other specialist never evaluated or even mentioned their adrenalglands# $here is a very good e@planation and I am going to e@plain it to you in the ne@tchapter#

7. Adrenals !8hy ha)en#t my !other" doctors mentioned it

“9hy hasn7t my other doctors mentioned my adrenal health or testing my cortisol levels#”

I can7t tell you ho' many times I have been asked this 5uestion over the years# any o/ mypatients are individuals 'ho are su//ering /rom 'eight loss struggles, /atigue, depression, andhormonal imbalances and have most likely been to numerous doctors and specialists# $heyhave had testing done and has o/ten been given “e@planations” /or their problems but havenever been told that they may be su//ering /rom a cortisol imbalance and 6drenal =atigue#

9hyG -et me e@plain####

6drenal /atigue has been recogni?ed, 'ritten about, discussed and treated /or over +** years#It has been dealt 'ith by thousands o/ doctors, both personally and clinically# 4et today, it isstill not taught in medical schools# $he average physician is there/ore una'are o/ it s

presence and so, not surprisingly, seldom looks /or it# Even specialist like endocrinologistrarely recogni?e adrenal /atigue as a distinct condition or are prepared to treat it#

-o' adrenal /unction is one o/ those problems that have become invisible to modernmedicine# espite the /act that subclinical hypoadrenia 'as recogni?ed as a distinctsyndrome earlier in the )*th century, there is little ackno'ledgment o/ it today# 9ith only a/e' rare e@ceptions, the only /orm o/ hypoadrenia recogni?ed by medicine is 6ddison7sdisease# 6ddison7s and (ushing7s disease ;e@tremely high levels o/ cortisol usually causedby drugs< are covered in medical te@ts and lectures, but adrenal /atigue, a condition thata//ects many more people than 6ddison7s and (ushing7s combined, is rarely, i/ ever, mentioned#

$o /ind one o/ the biggest reasons that modern medicine has /orgotten or dismissed this lo'adrenal syndrome as non1e@istent you need not to look /urther than the pharmaceutical andinsurance companies# Over the last hal/ decade the tremendous in/luence o/ these entitieshas completely altered the practice o/ medicine and, as a result, the emphasis in physiciantraining and health care as a 'hole#9hat used to be considered a doctor7s most essential diagnostic tools1 acute skills o/observation, physical e@amination and deductive reasoning, has no' been replaced byreliance on narro'ly interpreted lab tests and a lists o/ numerical diagnoses allo'able byinsurance plans#

$he health insurance industry has /orced the entire practice o/ medicine to restrict itsel/ topre1approved numbered codes /or both the diagnosis and the treatment o/ all healthconditions# 6s a result, drugs and surgery are usually the only therapies o//ered by modernmedicine, even 'hen they are inappropriate# So i/ an illness does not sho' up clearly on alab test or /it a diagnostic code, and i/ there is no kno'n surgical or drug treatment /or thesymptoms, then it is as though the problem is not real#

$he sad reality is that modern medicine is in the stranglehold o/ the insurance companies and

pharmaceutical companies# Aharmaceutical companies are the primary donors to manymedical schools and sponsor the ma0ority o/ the post1graduate education that doctors arere5uired to accomplish# 6s you can imagine most o/ the in/ormation taught is highlycorrelated 'ith their “'onder drug” and many physicians are never e@posed to alternativetesting and treatment options#

On the other hand, most physician incomes are directly dependent on reimbursement /romthe insurance companies# $his system is complete 'ith complicated paper'ork and codingthat limits and restricts a doctor7s ability to diagnose and treat their patients# Every patientmust be given an “I(” ;International (lassi/ication o/ isease< code /or their medicalcondition# .o one can /it in the cracks# 4ou must have an I( code to classi/y your illness orthe /inancial medicine 'heel 5uickly comes to a halt /or that patient and /or the doctor treatingthem# 9hat this means is that your doctor must “label” you 'ith a code that describes adisease1 even i/ it is not an e@act match to your condition, or they 'ill not be paid /or seeingyou and your insurance coverage 'ill not cover your visit# 6nd yes, there is no I( code /oradrenal /atigue and the code /or hypoadrenia is usually reserved /or 6ddison7s disease# 6s aresult, adrenal /atigue is never diagnosed and treated even i/ the physician kno's it e@ists#

8rong Test 8rong Diagnosis

$o most doctors, hypoadrenia means 6ddison7s disease and not adrenal /atigue#(onse5uently, the only tests they run to detect hypoadrenia are the tests /or 6ddison7sdisease# $his puts you in a “no1'in” situation# I/ you present to your doctor 'ith symptoms o/adrenal /atigue such as 'eight loss struggles, /atigue, depression, or hormonal imbalances, chances are they 'ill think your symptoms do not 0usti/y running a lab /or 6ddison7s disease#

6nd i/ you 'ere lucky enough to have a doctor 'ho 'ould run the test, you most likely 'ill nottest positive /or 6ddison7s disease and 'ould be dismissed 'ith a “healthy” diagnosis#

9hat i/ you suggest an alternative test like saliva to detect non16ddison7s hypoadreniaGUn/ortunately, most doctors are not a'are o/ these options and you 'ill be discouraged inpursuing them# 6nd i/ they are a'are o/ these options most don7t understand the reliabilitythat these tests demonstrate in scienti/ic 0ournals or the industry acceptance they have gainedover the past +* years# Either 'ay, most doctors 'ill convince you to /orget this “cra?y” notionand you 'ill 'alk a'ay discouraged, doubting your o'n symptoms, humiliated /or havingtaken any initiative concerning your health, and possibly 'ith a prescription /or tran5uili?ers oran appointment 'ith a psychiatrist#

espite the /act that every doctor7s o//ice /re5uently sees patients presenting 'ith symptomso/ lo' adrenal /unction, doctors do not check /or it# I/ it has no I( code, it simply does note@ist# Every day I hear stories /rom patients 'ho have had their symptoms “dismissed” bytheir medical providers# $hey are told that their symptoms are “in their head” or that they aredepressed and need an anti1depressant# 6s a result, thousands o/ people are su//eringundiagnosed and 'ithout proper guidance on 'hat to do#

So no' that you are sure that your adrenals should be evaluated###ho' do you do thatG In thene@t chapter I am going to discuss some o/ the most common testing you can do#

$his test has historically been used to indicate severe adrenal /atigue and 6ddison7s isease, milder cases o/ adrenal /atigue may not e@hibit this sign#

Saliva $esting

In recent years saliva testing has become the “gold” standard in evaluating hormone levels#$his type o/ testing o//ers some uni5ue advantages compared to standard blood testing#

%ormones can e@ist in your body either bound to a transport protein or “unbound”# $heunbound /orm o/ the hormone is the bio1active /orm that your tissues actually use# Dno'ingthose numbers are essential to understanding ho' your hormone levels are /unctioning inyour body#

Saliva testing evaluates the unbound hormones in your body and provides a /unctional look atho' your body is 'orking# In addition, 'hen it comes to (ortisol, saliva testing is the verybest medium to check your (ortisol levels# 6s I mentioned be/ore, (ortisol is on a (ircadianrhythm and /luctuates during the day ;highest in morning11lo'est at night< so kno'ing 'hatyour levels are at certain times o/ the day is e@tremely important in evaluating your levels andho' your adrenal glands are 'orking#

any “natural” or “alternative” healthcare practitioners carry this type o/ lab in their o//ices# Itis a simple take1home test that you complete over the coarse o/ the day and mail o// to a lab#$ypically these labs are ine@pensive and provides you and your doctor great in/ormationabout your health#

$he testing kit that 'e utili?e in our o//ice looks at key aspects o/ your adrenal health# Inaddition to looking at your cortisol levels, it also evaluates your %E6 level and your(ircadian rhythm# $his is vital in helping us design the best and most accurate treatment plan/or your speci/ic condition#

. Adrenal atigue- >o0 8hat

6s previously mentioned there are several stages o/ 6drenal =atigue and the severity o/ ho'it a//ects individuals varies# $he good ne's is, ho'ever, no matter 'hat stage you may /indyoursel/ in or 'hat symptoms you may be su//ering /rom, a /ull recovery is possible#

-ike many healing processes, healing /rom 6drenal e@haustion takes time, as 'ell as, aspeci/ic coarse o/ action# Dno'ing and understanding this coarse o/ action is crucial toe@periencing a /ull recovery and I 'ant to share 'ith you the details involved#

One o/ the /e' good things about adrenal /atigue is that you can do most o/ 'hat is necessaryto recover and regain your adrenal health, yoursel/# 4ou do not have to give your po'er a'ayto someone else hoping they kno' 'hat to do or rely on a magic pill to make you 'ell#8ecovering /rom adrenal /atigue re5uires key li/estyle changes and nutritional supplementsthat 'ill greatly /acilitate your recovery#

$he most important aspect o/ healing /orm adrenal /atigue has to do 'ith li/estyle# (hancesare, it 'as your li/estyle that contributed to this condition in the /irst place and no' it is themost important thing to help you /ully recover#

-i/estyle choices are choices that are +**L up to you and in your control# $his is animportant point because 'hat this means is you have 6-- the po'er to /ully recover# 4oumust understand this and embrace it# Being in charge is actually important /or adrenal health#8esearch sho's that rendering an animal helpless is one o/ the most rapid 'ays to depleteits adrenals# $here is nothing 'orse than having no control or being helpless in a situation#

&ust because you have all the control, ho'ever, doesn2t mean you should do it all by yoursel/#

Soliciting help /rom anyone or anything that 'ill lead to your healthy recovery is highlyadvisable#

$he role o/ li/estyle in health has been 'ell documented since the early +K**7s# Even in theearliest medical cases, physicians noticed that 'ithout proper li/estyle modi/ication, mostpatients seldom e@perienced complete improvement in their health# In my practice I canattest to this /act as 'ell# Aatients that are able to make the necessary changes to their dailyroutines not only recover much /aster but e@perience lasting results#

aily, 'e all make decisions that a//ect our health# Some choices improve and strengthen ourhealth, and others compromise and 'eaken our health# 9hen 'e make more poor choicesthan good choices our health deteriorates and 'hen 'e make more good choices than poorchoices our health increases# $hroughout this chapter I 'ill be sharing 'ith you the goodchoices that you must make to allo' your adrenals to heal#

$he number one thing that you must do to start your road to 6drenal recovery is to identi/y the/actor;s< that are straining your adrenals# $here 'ill be no need to change your diet, takesupplements, or even practice other li/estyle changes unless you are able to /irst stop thedrain on your adrenal glands# &ust like a 'ound needs to be cleaned prior to applying a band1aid, your adrenals need to rest to /ully recover#

+eparating the ositi)e from the >egati)e

It is important to distinguish 'hich things in your li/e are contributing to your health and 'hichthings aren7t# 6n e@ercise that I have /ound to help/ul 'ith my patients is to have them 'rite

out a list o/ all the bene/icial things in their li/e and all the detrimental things in their li/e# Isimply have them use a plain piece o/ paper and have them dra' a line do'n the center# Onone side label it “Aositive” and on the other side label it “.egative”#

$hen I instruct them to list the things in their li/e that positively a//ects them and those thatnegatively a//ect them# Aositive things can include things such as leisure activities, eatingpatterns, e@ercises, relationships, 'ork, /amily attitudes, belie/s, dietary supplements, etc# Inthe “.egative” column 'rite do'n everything that seems detrimental to your health and 'ellbeing# 6gain, they can be physical, emotional, chemical, /amily related, eating habits, drinking habits, or anything else that may not be serving you#

R.ote" 4ou may /ind that one particular thing in your li/e may have both positive and negativeaspects to it# =or e@ample" 4our &ob1 you may love 'hat you do, but hate the gruelingschedule it demands# In this case separate your 0ob out, put 0ob on the positive side andgrueling 'ork hours on the negative side#

It is important that you take as long as you need /or this e@ercise# $his may take your severalsessions or days to complete# on7t rush it and try to be a thorough as possible# $here is noright or 'rong ans'ers so be as /orthcoming as possible#

6/ter you have completed your lists o/ both Aositive and .egative go over the lists and circlethe /ive most signi/icant entries in each column# .o' rank each o/ those /ive /rom + to H, 'ith+ being the most important and H being the least# .e@t go back to the top H in the .egativesection and identi/y e@actly 'hat about these items is so hard on you# 8eally evaluate themunder a microscope until you have a clear picture o/ the main things in your li/e that arenegatively a//ecting your health#

.o' select the one that you ranked C+# (ommit to eliminating it /rom your li/e# evise a planand a date o/ accomplishing removing this negative aspect /rom your li/e# Be reasonable 'ithyour plan and e@pectations but de/initely be committed to doing 'hat it takes to regain yourhappiness#

Once you have success/ully eliminated C+ on your .egative list then it is time to move ontoC) on the list# Once again, devise a plan and time /rame to accomplish your goal o/eliminating it /rom your li/e# 4ou 'ill repeat this e@ercise until all H are removed /rom your li/e#

In addition to removing the .egative things in your li/e, 'e 'ant to increase the Aositivethings# 4ou 'ill 'ant to evaluate the top H things that you identi/ied in your li/e and increasetheir prevalence in your li/e# Identi/y action steps that you can do to increase the 5uantity and/re5uency o/ these things in your li/e# 9rite these actions do'n and revie' them daily so you'ill stay on track#

+leep

One o/ the most important tools to improve your adrenals is to get ade5uate amounts o/sleep# Sleep is our body7s 'ay o/ healing and restoring# 9ithout sleep 'e cannot properlyrecover /rom our daily activities and 'ill result in a constant strain on your adrenal glands#

.o', I kno' 'hat you are thinking### “I 'ant to sleep but I can7t!” Sleep issues are one o/ thebiggest complaints that I hear /rom my patients# Either they have trouble /alling asleep or i/they /all asleep11 they have trouble staying asleep# Sound /amiliarG

$here are several possible scenarios o/ 'hy this may be happening# =irst, i/ you /ind yoursel/'aking bet'een +"** and F"** 6, your liver may be lacking the glycogen reserves needed/or conversion by the adrenals or the adrenal themselves are too 'eak to produce enoughcortisol to keep the blood glucose levels high enough during the night#

See, our cells are constantly demanding energy to /unction# Our body is designed to haveour liver store energy ;glucose< in the /orm o/ glycogen# 9hen our cells demand /uel our liver'ill breakdo'n that stored glycogen and convert it into usable energy ;glucose<# $his processre5uires the hormone cortisol, the main hormone released by your adrenals, and i/ you aresu//ering /rom adrenal /atigue your adrenals are too 'eak to make the appropriate amount o/cortisol necessary# 6s a result, your liver is unable to breakdo'n the glycogen, your cells gohungry, and your body 'akes you# $his is o/ten the case i/ you have panic or an@iety attacks, nightmares, or toss and turn bet'een +"** and "** 6#

6 simple trick I teach my patients is to have a small snack prior to going to bed# $he snackneeds to contain a good source o/ protein and /at and cannot be too s'eet or sugary# Somepeanut or almond butter on some sliced celery, carrots or cucumbers or a small protein shake

Page 38: The Adrenal Code - Unlocking the Secrets to Obtaining the Body You Desire

are good choices#

Both too high and too lo' nighttime cortisol levels can cause sleep disturbances# One o/ thereasons people struggle 'ith /alling asleep is that they have too much cortisol in the eveninghours# 8emember, cortisol are units o/ energy so i/ your levels are high you 'ill have trouble/alling asleep# $his typically occurs 'ith individuals 'ho e@ercise too late in the evenings or

“push” themselves to stay up a/ter ++ pm# E@ercise increases cortisol so i/ you e@ercise tooclose to bedtime the spike in your cortisol levels may prevent you /rom /alling asleep#Similarly, 'hen you stay up past ++ pm your adrenals 'ill o/ten produce a cortisol surge, as'ell as, an adrenaline surge and give you that “second 'ind” 'hich 'ill o/ten make it di//icultto /all asleep#

9hen it comes to evaluating your cortisol levels at night so that you can devise a plan toimprove your adrenal glands, the best strategy is to do a salivary cortisol test# $hese testso/ten evaluate your levels throughout the day including bedtime# I/ your levels are too lo' youcan devise a plan to raise them, and i/ too high you can do techni5ues to lo'er them# $oraise them you could do a short e@ercise routine in the evening and to lo'er them you couldchose a variety o/ rela@ing techni5ues such as a 'arm bath, meditation, or the yoga posturekno'n as the alternate leg pull#

Tips to *etter sleep4

• $he best time to sleep is bet'een +* pm and am#

• %ave an electronic cur/e' o/ no later than K pm# ;that means no email or =acebook'hile lying in bed<

• Spend the last hour prior to bed reading, meditating, soaking in a bath, or listening to

calm music

• Sleep in complete darkness1 .o nightlights, $V and computers o//, Blackout shades

• 8esearch indicates that the ideal sleep temperature is M = ;don7t make it too hot orcold in your bedroom<

• E@ercise or do some physical activity during the day

• Eat a small protein and /at rich snack prior to bedtime

• Stop drinking 'ater at least + hour prior to bed ;prevents nightly bathroom breaks<

• I/ you /ind yoursel/ 'aking in the night don7t 0ust lay in bed# >et up and sit some'hereelse until you /eel tired again# Eat a small protein snack like a hand/ul o/ almonds#

In addition to these help/ul tips some patients /ind that using natural supplements are veryuse/ul in helping them sleep# I/ you have your melatonin levels checked and they are lo', youcan use melatonin be/ore going to bed# (aution" I highly recommend that you have yourmelatonin levels checked prior to using it as a supplement# O/ten it is not the melatonin that

is too lo' and adding more to your system actually makes your condition 'orse#

Several herbs can commonly be used to promote better sleep such as hops ;'hole plant<,catnip ;leaves<, valerian ;root< and licorice ;root<# 6lthough not kno'n as a sedative, the herbash'agandha can help indirectly through its ability to normali?e cortisol and se@ hormones, both o/ 'hich can produce sleep disturbances#

E(ercise

9hen it comes to strategies to improve your health, e@ercise is de/initely one o/ the best#9hether you are currently e@ercising or you are 0ust “planning” on getting started, having agood strategy is necessary /or success#$hose o/ you 'ho are struggling 'ith the most severe adrenal /atigue may actually have triedto e@ercise only to /eel 'orse 'hen you do# $his is a common complaint I hear /rom many o/my patients and learning ho' to e//ectively e@ercise /or ma@imum results is a key to beingsuccess/ul#

E@ercise is absolutely necessary /or adrenal recovery so it is not a matter o/ 'hether youshould or not, it is more a matter o/ 'hat type and ho' o/ten# One si?e does not /it all!Alease don7t assume because your girl/riend e@ercises one 'ay that it 'ill be a good /it /oryou# In addition, many o/ those e@ercise e@perts promoting their latest /at burning methodsaren7t going to serve you 'ell#

9hen it comes to e@ercising to improve your adrenals less is actually more# 9hat I mean bythis is that lo'er intensity 'ill actually serve you better than going out and training /or a HD#E@ercise needs to be en0oyable# $his should be an activity that adds value to your li/e and nota daunting task that adds additional stress# Some o/ the best 'ays to begin e@ercising is'alking, yoga, stretching, $ai (hi, s'imming, and 'ater aerobics# $he key here is to pick ane@ercise and be (O.SIS$E.$# By doing something on a regular basis you 'ill begin toe@perience the bene/its that e@ercise brings to your health like increased o@ygen and blood/lo'#

I/ you /ind yoursel/ too sore a/ter e@ercising or the ne@t morning take note o/ the previousday7s activities# $his may be a good indication that you have pushed yoursel/ too /ast toosoon# Simply decrease the intensity a little and keep moving# on7t give up, ho'ever, anduse a little discom/ort as an e@cuse to 5uit# Some soreness and discom/ort 'ill be e@pectedas you train and strengthen your body#

6s your body becomes stronger ;usually takes about t'o 'eeks o/ consistent e@ercise< you'ill /ind the need to push yoursel/ a little harder# 6gain, add intensity slo'ly allo'ing the bodytime to adapt 'ith each level#

One o/ the biggest mistakes people make 'hen adding e@ercise to their li/estyles is to go at ittoo hard too /ast# .ot only do they set themselves up /or /urther burnout, but they o/tendisrupt their hormones /urther by eating improperly# 6 common myth is that you shouldIncrease E@ercise 'hile ecreasing (alories to lose 'eight# 6nd although that strategy 'illcertainly provide some short term results, lasting results rarely occur#

$he biggest health robber o/ today7s /ood industry is sugar# $his is probably no surprise toyou but the amount that the average 6merican consumes may be# id you kno' the average

Sugar is every'here and, in most instances, hidden# %ere is a guide you can do'nload 'ithall o/ the di//erent names /or sugar#

Because sugar is so prevalent, it is usually the hardest thing that my patients /ind to eliminate

Sugar is a constant drainer o/ your adrenal glands re5uiring your body to produce insulin andcortisol in the response to spikes and drops o/ glucose in your blood# $he more sugar youconsume the harder your body must 'ork to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level# Inaddition, sugar 'eakens your immune system making you more susceptible to sickness andis also the underlying cause o/ most the yeast and bad bacteria in your gut# $his o/ten

6nother ma0or culprit 'hen it comes to your adrenal health is re/ined carbohydrates# $heseare carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, and cereal# $he inherit problem 'ith thesetypes o/ /oods is that they convert very 5uickly to sugar in your body# ;'ithin seconds!< 6s aresult, they cause your glucose levels to spike and your insulin and cortisol levels to surge inresponse# Eating re/ined carbohydrates is very similar to eating sugar# $he more you eat o/ itthe 'orse your adrenals 'ill be# %ealing can only e@ist 'hen you give your body theappropriate rest /rom consuming these /oods#

must consume good healthy /at and not the rancid vegetable oils that are prevalent in somany products on the shelves today# 4ou must change /rom Bad /ats to >ood /ats#

Bad /ats are trans /ats, hydrogenated /ats, partially hydrogenated oils, and most vegetableoils like margarine, (anola oil, and (risco# $hese types o/ /ats negatively a//ect your body bydisrupting the /atty acid metabolism and preventing your body /rom creating 5uality cell

>ood /ats, on the other hand, are /ats that promote cell membrane production and /atty acidmetabolism# >ood /ats consist on olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, ra' nuts, and the saturated/ats /ound in grass1/ed bee/ and 'ild caught salmon# 4ou should consume these types o/ /aton a daily basis#

Coo%ing 0ith oil# 9hen it comes to cooking I recommend that you use organic coconut oil#(oconut oil is a medium chained saturated /at and is e@cellent /or high heat conditions# Oliveoil, on the other hand, should not be used /or cooking# 6lthough very healthy, it does not do'ell 'ith heat and 'ill become rancid very 5uickly 'hen heated# $his 'ill negate any positivebene/its o/ the oil# Instead, use olive oil /or dipping and /or salad dressings#

Change your eats

eat is one o/ the healthiest and nutritious things that you can eat# ;sorry vegans andvegetarians<# eat contains essential vitamins like B+) and is a great source o/ protein#Arotein consumption is essential /or proper digestion and a great source o/ lasting energy#

6lthough meat is a very healthy and use/ul /ood, 'e have done a great 0ob in destroying ourcurrent meat supply# $oday, 'e 0am pack cattle, chickens, turkeys, and even /ish into arti/icialliving environments and /orce /eed them unnatural diets# 6s a result, the animals that 'e areraising are becoming sicker and the meat 'e are eating less healthy#

9hen it comes to meat you must choose to pick a healthy source# E@amples o/ this aregrass1/ed co's, /ree range chickens and turkeys, and 'ild caught /ish# (o's are designed toeat grass not grain, chickens and turkeys designed to eat bugs and roam around, and /ish'ere never meant to live in big tanks and /ed pellets#

9hen animals eat these unnatural diets their health deteriorates# 6s a result, they arepumped 'ith antibiotics and gro'th hormones to keep them alive and help them gro'#Un/ortunately these drugs are then passed do'n to our dinner plates# One study sho'ed thatthe C+ reason /or early puberty in girls are the hormones /ound in the meat and dairyproducts!

Buying organic grass1/ed bee/, /ree range chickens and turkeys, and 'ild caught /ish 'illallo' you to en0oy these great health promoting /oods 'ithout the harm/ul chemicals andhormones# 6s a result, your body 'ill not have to deal this to@ic burden and can properlyheal#

I/ you happen to be a vegan or vegetarian I ask you to reconsider the many bene/its o/ eatinghealthy meat# I/ you have chosen this li/estyle as a result o/ a religious or political belie/ I am

not here to change your mind or argue my case# I respect your belie/s and encourage you tocontinue to eat as you /eel led# %aving said that, let me caution you on the dangers o/avoiding healthy meat in your diet# (ertain essential vitamins like B+) are only /ound inanimal products and o/ten many vegetarians and vegans are de/icient in these nutrients# Inmy clinical e@perience some o/ the sickest “healthy” eaters I encounter /ollo' a strictvegetarian and vegan diet# I/ you are a vegetarian or vegan please routinely get checked /or

your nutrient levels and supplement appropriately#

=or those that 0ust don7t like the taste o/ meat or the 'ay you /eel a/ter eating meat, let meencourage you to reconsider eating meat in your diet# One o/ the most prevalent symptomso/ a lo' /unctioning adrenal gland is a lack o/ hydrochloric acid in the stomach# %ydrochloricacid is essential /or breaking do'n protein and, 'hen in short supply, results in undigested/ood# $his 'ill lead to symptoms o/ acid re/lu@, bloating, constipation and othergastrointestinal issues#

I /ind that 'ith my patients i/ 'e can improve the hydrochloric acid in their stomach and helpheal their adrenal glands that their e@perience 'ith eating meat completely changes# Onesmall trick I tell my patients to try is to buy some organic apple cider vinegar and take a smallshot o/ it at the beginning o/ each meal# $he natural acidity in the vinegar 'ill help breakdo'n the /ood and improve your digestive processes# $his is a simple trick anyone 'ithdigestive issues can try!

8hat a a*out soy

Soy is one the most controversial topics in health and nutrition# 6 5uick search on the internet'ill provide you enough pro and anti soy sediment to keep you busy /or the ne@t H years# But'hat is the truth about soy and should you be eating itG

=irst, let me say that I believe soy can be a good 5uality source o/ protein# (ertainly manyEastern cultures have consumed it /or many years and have seen great health bene/its#%aving said that, the un/ortunate truth about the ma0ority o/ the soy available today is that ithas been stripped o/ its health promoting aspects and instead promotes disease#

$he genetic modi/ication o/ soy has single handily destroyed the potential health bene/its o/soy and is 'hy I advise the ma0ority o/ my patients to avoid it# 6lmost all the soy no' gro'nin the United States is genetically modi/ied and is 'hat7s most available /or consumption#9hat this means is that the ma0ority o/ soy products sold and that you consume containharm/ul chemicals that can lead to estrogen dominate cancers and hormonal imbalances#

Because the ma0ority o/ the patients I see have some sort o/ adrenal insu//iciency or hormonalimbalance, I al'ays suggest a soy1/ree diet /or at least K* days# I /ound that the elimination o/soy, gluten and co'7s dairy /or at least K* days have tremendous health bene/its /or mypatients and allo's them to “0ump start” their road to recovery# 6/ter the K* days somepatients are capable o/ adding these /ood items back into their diet but many choose not todue to the incredible 'ay they /eel a/ter avoiding them#

9hat about organic non1>O soy productsG Obviously i/ you can /ind a good source o/ non1>O soy then consuming it could be bene/icial to your health# Un/ortunately, in manyinstances labeling is not al'ays +**L accurate and because o/ cross contamination on /arms

I/ you do consume soy I encourage you to avoid /orms such as soy protein isolate, soy proteinconcentrates, hydroly?ed soy protein, partially hydrogenated soy oil, etc# 9hole soy /oods

made /rom organic or non1>O soybeans are more natural and are the soy /oods that havenourished entire civili?ations /or centuries# Edamame and /ermented soy products such asiso and $empeh are e@amples o/ healthier soy options#

A ?uic% note a*out fruit

=ruit is one o/ the healthiest /oods that you can consume# Un/ortunately, ho'ever, because o/the natural sugar /ound in /ruit, certain /ruits need to be avoided 'hen adrenal healing istaking place# $hese are also the types o/ /ruit that you should avoid i/ 'eight loss is a goal o/yours#

$he best type o/ /ruits you should consume are berries# Berries have a lo' glycemic inde@and there/ore do not spike you insulin as much 'hen you consume them# >ood e@amplesare blackberries, raspberries, stra'berries, elderberries, and blueberries# (herries, pearsand >ranny Smith apples can also be eaten in moderation# $he best time to consume /ruit isimmediately a/ter e@ercising# 4our body is capable o/ absorbing the glucose rush much bettera/ter e@ercising because o/ better insulin sensitivity# o not eat /ruit at night or be/ore going tobed#

=ruits like bananas, raisins, dates, /igs, and oranges should be avoided due to their highsugar content# 6void all types o/ dried /ruit and /ruit 0uices# 6gain, these items have large5uantities o/ sugar in them#

Caffeine

(a//eine arti/icially raises your cortisol levels and is one o/ the biggest assaulters o/ youradrenal glands# Elimination o/ ca//eine must occur i/ you are to regain your adrenal health# Ikno' 'hat you are thinking11 “I can7t /unction 'ithout my co//ee!” 6nd although this may seemtrue, I promise you can start your day o// 'ith plenty o/ energy 'ithout the use o/ ca//eine#

Nuitting co//ee is no easy task and there is a reason that ca//eine is the C+ consumed drug inthe 'orld# 6s a previous daily co//ee drinker mysel/, I can empathi?e 'ith your dilemma# $heencouraging ne's is that not only I 'as success/ul, but everyone o/ my patients have beensuccess/ul at eliminating co//ee /rom their diets! $his means I kno' you can do it too!

$he best strategy /or eliminating co//ee is to do it slo'ly by 'eaning yoursel/ o// o/ it# Isuggest that you go buy a bag o/ deca/ co//ee and slo'ly begin to titer it in your morningroutine# I/ you currently have ) cups o/ co//ee, make one regular and the other deca/# o this/or about a 'eek and then decrease it do'n to one deca/ cup and the other cup hal/ regularand hal/ deca/# 6/ter another 'eek try going +:F regular and ):F deca/# =inally, make the leapto completely deca/# eca/ co//ee does still contain some ca//eine so stopping deca/ co//ee'ill also be the ultimate goal# S'itching to green tea 'ould be the ne@t logical step and thento other teas such as Oolong or chamomile teas#

“But I 0ust love the smell and taste o/ co//ee”# I hear ya! So do I and is 'hy I 'ill indulge in acup on occasion# %aving said that, I did 5uit /or about a year so that my adrenals could heal#$o this day I 'ill not drink co//ee more than a couple days in a single 'eek and many times I'ill go 'ithout it /or months at a time# In other 'ords, I am no longer reliant on it to get megoing in the morning and only consume it as a “special” treat# I/ you do drink co//ee you

should consider buying organic, drink it black or 'ith a small amount o/ coconut or almondmilk, and 'ith no sugar# I use stevia i/ I 'ant to s'eeten my co//ee# I suggest you use anatural source o/ stevia and avoid products such as $ruvia, Aruvia, and Stevia in the 8a'#

Alcohol

One o/ the largest sources o/ sugar is /ound in alcohol# 6lcohol 5uickly coverts to sugar 'henconsumed and 'ill constantly cause blood sugar issues# In addition, alcohol disrupts yourliver en?ymes and hormones# 6voiding alcohol is suggested i/ you truly 'ish to regain yourhealth and boost your /at burning potential# I al'ays suggest that my patients avoid alcohol/or at least K* days to allo' their bodies to heal and adrenals recover# 6/ter that, consumingsmall amounts o/ alcohol on occasion is typically tolerated#

9hen it comes to alcohol the “best” sources are" 8ed 'ine, >in, 8ye, Scotch, Bourbon,$e5uila and Vodka# Ideally, you 'ill 'ant to drink these 'ithout sugary mi@ers and pre/erably'ith 'ater, sparkling 'ater, real cranberry 0uice, or simply “up” or “on the rocks”#

6lcohol 'ith the most sugar are" 'hite 'ine, li5ueurs, brandy, sherry, and rum# $hese typeso/ alcohols should be avoided or consumed very sparingly#

8hen should you eat

Because most individuals su//ering 'ith adrenal /atigue are also battling blood sugar issues I/ind that it is most strategic to eat periodically throughout the day# I al'ays suggest that youeat 'ithin + hour o/ 'aking up and to start your day o// 'ith a good hearty break/ast complete'ith protein and /at# By eating a break/ast 'ith plenty o/ protein and /at it 'ill satis/y your /oodcravings, balance your blood sugar ,and provide you 'ith energy to start the day#Un/ortunately, many individuals either skip break/ast or eat a break/ast /ull o/ re/inedcarbohydrates and ca//eine# $his certainly 'ill boost your blood sugar and get you going, butis also 'hy you /ind yoursel/ “crashing” at +* am and grabbing that e@tra cup o/ co//ee oro//ice donut and snack#

6 great break/ast /ood is the incredible egg# Eggs are versatile and can be prepared in avariety o/ 'ays and does not take much time to prepare# One strategy /or busy people is tohard boil a do?en eggs and keep them in the /ridge# $his 'ay every morning you can eithereat at home or grab it and eat it on the go# One o/ my /avorite things to do /or break/ast is toscramble F eggs and chop up some broccoli, peppers, and mushrooms and make an omelet#I then slice W an avocado on it and add a little homemade or organic /resh salsa#

6nother great option is to make a break/ast smoothie# I typically have a smoothie at least Fdays per 'eek and is great 'ay o/ 0am packing some nutrients on the go# 4ou can use agood 5uality rice, pea or 'hey protein po'der# I typically use a cup o/ 'ater, scoop o/ proteinpo'der, cup o/ organic berries, ra' egg ;on occasion<, and scoop o/ a super green po'dery

Snacking is o/ten important /or those su//ering 'ith blood sugar issues and I advise you eat asmall snack in the mid morning and a/ternoon# >reat snack options are a hand/ul o/ ra' nuts,

carrots 'ith humus, and almond butter on celery sticks# 6void eating crackers, cookies, pret?els or chips# $hese items 'ill only spike your blood sugar momentarily and set you up/or a /uture crash#

$he rule o/ thumb 'ith every meal and snack is to have some protein and /at# $hese t'osources o/ calories are best /or your blood sugar and 'ill provide you 'ith lasting energy thatcarbohydrates alone 'ill not#

inner should not be eaten too late in the evening and should consist o/ a good proteinsource# 6 lean piece o/ meat 'ith a non1starchy vegetable should make up the ma0ority o/your dinners# On occasion, having starchy vegetables like s'eet potatoes, rice, or 5uinoa areacceptable but certainly shouldn7t be eaten every night# 4ou 'ill 'ant to completely avoidre/ined carbohydrates such as pasta and bread#

uring our consultation I learned that she had a very demanding 0ob that she had been at /ormany years and that she had noticed increased stomach pain, an@iety and over'helm overthe last couple o/ years# I e@plained to her ho' the adrenal glands released cortisol inresponse to stress and that too much o/ it over a period o/ time can destroy the lining o/ thestomach and disrupt hormone production# She agreed to have her adrenals tested, as 'ellas, a higher sensitivity /ood test that looked at cross reactive /oods to gluten#

%er labs revealed Stage F 6drenal =atigue and that she 'as not only sensitive to gluten, butshe couldn7t tolerate many o/ the other substances that are /ound in so many “gluten1/ree”/oods# 9e modi/ied her diet to eliminate those other /oods and put her on an adrenal supportprotocol# Immediately, Barbra began noticing improvements in her energy and an@iety#9ithin several 'eeks she had lost over +* lbs and is e@cited about resuming e@ercise /or the/irst time in several years#

Aer a recommendation /rom a /riend and patient o/ mine, Sally came in to see me# Ie@plained to Sally ho' the thyroid 'orks and 'hy most conventional testing approaches o/tenmiss the big picture# I also e@plained ho' the adrenal glands closely 'ork 'ith the thyroidand ho' stress can cause the endocrine system to 'ork improperly# She agreed to have anadrenal lab done, as 'ell as, a comprehensive thyroid panel#

%er lab reports indicated that she 'as not only in Stage ) 6drenal =atigue, but that her thyroidproblems 'ere a result /rom an autoimmune disease called %ashimoto7s# Because she hadan underlying autoimmune issue, our /ocus 'as to support her immune system /irst# I put heron an immune supporting diet and began to support her adrenal glands# 9ithin the /irst threedays o/ the diet Sally stated that she already /elt more energy than she had in years and by

the end o/ * days, she had /inally lost the +H lbs that had seemed “stuck” on her# Sally toldme that she /inally /elt like she could be the mother that she had al'ays 'anted to be#

I sho'ed &essica the hormone cascade chart and she agreed 'ith me that the underlyingcause o/ her symptoms 'ere being ignored# &essica had been through a nasty divorceseveral years earlier 'hich she admits took a lot out o/ her# I e@plained that unless heradrenal health 'as evaluated she may continue to su//er 'ith hormonal issues#

%er adrenal lab sho'ed that she 'as in Stage F 6drenal =atigue# Because she had been onsome high doses o/ hormone replacement, I had her do a F* day deto@ protocol to e@pelsome o/ the e@tra hormones and to clean out her liver# $his protocol alone made her /eel likea ne' 'oman and she lost +H lbs in those F* days# 6/ter her deto@ I began to support heradrenals and she continued to have more energy and she noticed that her night s'eats andhot /lashes 'ere cut in hal/#
