ACOUSTICAL NEWS FROM ABROAD Walter G. Mayer Physics Dept., Georgetown University, Washington, D.C. 20057 ICA 11 statistics--An update We received a number of comments on the attendance figures for the 1983 ICA in Paris [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 75, 293 (1983)] concerning the accuracy ofthe published numbers, as supplied bytheSecretary General of ICA 11. One Australian colleague wrote that thereweredefinitely more thanthreeAustralians, the number given in the compilation, at the Con- gress. It wasalso pointed out that when adding the numbers in the "by country list"thetotalis 1048 while thesame ICA announcement mentions a total of 1175. Other unofficial announcements indicate a total number of "more than 1200"[Bull. Aust.Acoust. Soc. 11, 118 (1983}] or "a few hundred greater than Edinburgh (INTER-NOISE '83,Ed.)" (IOA Acoust. Bull. October 1983)with theINTER-NOISE '83attendance figure given as "around 700" (IOAAcoust. Bull.} oras high as "nearly 1000" [Noise/News 12, 97 (1983}]. In order to clarify the situation we contacted ICA 11 and were in- formed that Australian participation was indeed not three but 17.The dis- erepanty in theaddition, 1048 vs 1175 came about because the"bycountry list"was prepared thevery first dayof theCongress and thus didnotcount those who arrived later. The total of 1175 is the finalfigure compiled after the Congress; however, theremaybe some omissions (student volunteer helpers admitted free) or some double listings (attendees having given two different addresses). The Secretary General ofICA 11tells usthat 1175 is near the real figure. Lyonto host IUTAMSymposium on Aero and Hydro-Acoustics--July 1985 An IUTAM Symposium on Aero and Hydro-Acoustics willbe held 3- 5 July 1985 atthe Ecole Centrale deLyon in Ecully, outside Lyon, France. Thepurpose of thegathering is to bring together scientists andresearch engineers in order to discuss recent developments and applications in the generation of noise by turbulent flow, thegeneration of noise by flow in- duced vibrations, thepropagation of acoustic waves through inhomogen- eous fields, and random fluctuations. Contributions will cover fundamen- tals of acoustics, basic physical mechanisms, numerical techniques, experimental methods, andnoise control. The deadline for preliminary registration and submission of abstracts (about 200words) is 15November 1984. Further details can beobtained fromthe organizing committee, M. The Acoustical Society of Finland--40 years A few months ago the Acoustical Society ofFinland celebrated its 40th birthday. A commemorative booklet, entitled "Akustinen Seura •.0 Vuotta" (inFinnish) was published by theSociety to mark theoccasion and three honorary members were elected, Per V. Briielof Denmark, Bertram Scharf of Boston University, andA.M. Kuusela of Finland. The Acoustical Society of Finland is the oldest of the Scandinavian acoustical societies. Its most visible activity has been thearranging of meet- ings and excursions for itsmembership, which numbers about 250.Work has also been done to promote research, education, and publications, as for instance the Finnish Acoustical Glossary whichwill be published shortly. TheSociety cooperates withvarious international organizations and acts as an advisory expert to several Finnish organizations.
