Introduction

Welcome to my ebook, The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make Homeschooling

High School! Before we get started, let me introduce myself. My name is Lee

Binz and I am The HomeScholar. I homeschooled my two children from third

grade through high school. When they graduated, I awarded them a homeschool

diploma and a handmade transcript with my own mommy-grades. Amazingly,

my two homeschool graduates were both admitted (with great scholarships) to

every college where they applied. Best of all, they were both given four year, full-

tuition scholarships to their first choice university!

Through this process, I learned some amazing strategies for how to homeschool

high school. With my kids successfully launched, my mission now is to help

parents like you homeschool through high school.

I am excited to share some of the most valuable lessons I've learned from

homeschooling my own children and from helping other homeschool parents

succeed through the high school years.

With each chapter, I've listed one or more featured resources that will provide

you additional help along the way. Let’s get going!

Blessings,

Lee Binz

Mistake 1: Not Preparing for College

We've been taught to assume that a college prep education is only for college-

bound kids. But college preparation is great life preparation. The first big

mistake parents make in their homeschool is failing to aim for college!

In this first chapter, you will learn what you can do to provide a college

preparation education for your own children and why a college prep education

is important.

A homeschool high school college prep education includes reading, writing, and

math skills critical for any profession. It covers history, so our society isn't

doomed to repeat it! It covers sciences for critical thinking and civics so our

students can vote effectively. It covers foreign languages so we better

understand the world around us. And physical fitness for health.

A college prep education is important for all children. If a child is going on to

college, then of course they need a college prep high school education. But what

if you think they may not go to college? What then? Then their homeschool

experience may be their only formal education, and we have to make it a good

one. If they aren't going on to college, then they are going directly into the

workforce. They need to be prepared so they are good citizens, can function in

their chosen career, and can vote knowledgeably.

You can't always know what the future holds

Have you ever noticed that sometimes (often!) teens change their minds? My

good friend’s son loved motors. He was always bringing home stray engines the

way other kids might bring home stray puppies. She became convinced her son

would become a mechanic. Positive her child wouldn't go to college, and

therefore wouldn't need math, she was never concerned about pushing him

along. He loved engines so much - it was an obvious fit, right?

Well, one day he announced he wanted to be an engineer and suddenly needed

calculus! Children change their minds, and sometimes even parents can't

assume things will end up the way they think it will.

Maximize flexibility

Planning a college prep high school will allow your child to change their mind. It

will allow them to pursue any college they suddenly long for, and any

profession they become enamored with! Planning for college will allow you

maximum flexibility and prevent any missteps or miscues along the way.

No matter what life brings, you'll be ready for it! Have you seen "The

Incredibles" movie? You'll be like the superhero mom, Elastigirl - a superhero

homeschool parent ready for anything that comes your way!

Remediation is common

I read a statistic recently that a third of high school graduates require remedial

help in college. One third of them aren't ready for college! You can do much

better than public schools, simply by ensuring your kids are ready for college.

Aiming for college early can improve their chances of getting into college and

earning significant financial aid.

Page 8: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make - Amazon S3 · Also From The HomeScholar

If you fail to prepare them, college is still possible, but it's more painful -

financially and academically. Even if you can't seem to get your child prepared

in one area, keep working on the other areas. They can still receive remedial

help in college, but you can provide them the best possible preparation in other

areas.

Always be prepared

My children were well prepared for college, and you can prepare you children

for college as well! Parents can provide college preparation during high school,

which can benefit every child. Even if they don't go to college, they'll be well

prepared for life and their civic responsibilities. Plus, if they ever change their

mind and decide to go to college, they will have a much easier time getting in.

On the other hand, some parents know early on that their children are college

bound. For them, a college prep education can influence the quality of the

colleges they entrance to, and improve the quantity of financial aid they receive.

College preparation can benefit everyone!

But how do you do it?

In the next chapter, we will go over exactly how to plan a rigorous curriculum.

You'll learn what courses to teach and how many! It will go a long way to help

you plan for college admission, whether you think college is a slam-dunk sure

choice, or even your don't-mess-up and be-prepared plan!

Mistake 2: Failing to Plan High School Courses

In the last chapter, you learned why aiming for college will provide your child

the best education. They will either go to college and use their college

preparation education, or they won’t go to college and their homeschool

education becomes the only formal education they receive. College preparation

is life preparation, especially since you don't know what the future holds. You

want to homeschool like the Boy Scouts and always "be prepared."

You're probably wondering, though, about the big how. How can you do it? How

can a humble homeschool be like a high power college prep high school? That's

the focus of this chapter! The second biggest mistake parents make while

homeschooling high school is not planning high school courses. I'm going to tell

how to, so you can avoid this trap.

Check your state's requirements

First, during eighth and ninth grade, find out the homeschool requirements in

your state. Requirements vary widely and can change yearly, so it's impossible

to know without checking it out for yourself. Check with your state homeschool

organizations to find out the requirements. A simple Google search for the name

of your state plus "homeschool organization" is all you need to do. Find the

requirements, then develop a plan to meet them. Some states don't require

specific courses from homeschoolers. In this case, make sure you meet the legal

requirements of your state law, but focus your course selection on college

requirements - it allows for maximum flexibility in the future.

Page 11: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make - Amazon S3 · Also From The HomeScholar

Meet college admission requirements

What are the college admission requirements? There is no right answer, because

every college has their own requirements! In general, though, the recommended

courses to take in high school include four years of English, three or four years

of math, three to four years of social studies, three years of science (including

one lab science), two to three years of a single foreign language, two years of

P.E., one year of fine arts, and enough electives to make 24 or more high school

credits. Review the common college requirements to see what courses are

expected. In every area of high school college prep, make sure you teach your

students right at their level.

Exceed requirements for fun!

One of the benefits of homeschooling is its efficiency - it allows plenty of time

for fun! Many of the activities teenagers do for fun can be used as high school

courses! Fun things your child likes can make wonderful educational electives

and additional foundational courses that beef up their transcript. (I have some

great ideas on how to make a winning homeschool transcript that I'll share later

in this ebook.)

The basics cover a multitude of weaknesses

Focus on reading, writing, and math. If you cover the basics, you can't stray far

from great college preparation. Many students who go to college need remedial

help with the basics. If your student has a solid foundation, they’ll be successful!

The ability to read, write, and do math will allow your student to catch up

quickly if and when they decide to pursue higher education.

Review your plan yearly and adjust as needed

Page 12: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make - Amazon S3 · Also From The HomeScholar

A quick yearly review can keep you on track during high school. Each year, you

can make decisions on what is right at the time, but the yearly review will give

you the larger overview of high school. The yearly review will remind you that

this is the year you need to start a foreign language, this is your last chance for

squeezing in a lab science, or give you the final impetus to get in an art course.

Review your plan yearly while you and your child enjoy a lifestyle of learning.

Conclusion

Colleges will know you have done a great job planning high school courses when

your student takes college admission exams. In order to help your child succeed,

you need to know a little about these tests. What are they, when does your child

take them, and why? This will be the focus of the next chapter.

“I have benefited from Lee Binz's knowledge and experience in

homeschooling high school. I have a few of her ebooks, read her blog

articles, emailed her with questions (which she answers) and I feel she is a

friend, even though we have never met. This book is another shot in the

arm. She is a cheerleader for the faint-hearted, a counselor to those with

specific questions, and generally guides a homeschool mom through

practical ways of designing a transcript or choosing curriculum.

This is not a daunting book by any stretch. I have read other ‘how-to’ books

on this subject and become overwhelmed. Lee is not that way. She is

realistic. The most helpful advice is the ‘delight-directed learning’ concept.

Let life be their teacher. Whatever they enjoy doing can be a class.

You can read this book in an hour or less, about as much time as it takes to

enjoy a cup of coffee and a refill. And I think Lee would appreciate that!

Thanks to the author for another helpful resource.”

Mistake 3: Ignoring High School Tests

The third biggest mistake parents make is failing to prepare their children for

college admission exams! Let’s discuss these standard high school tests.

These tests can demonstrate that your kids know enough to thrive in college!

The standard college admission exams make great external documentation to

prove you have produced educated students.

On the other hand, these high school tests can cause stress for parents and

students. They are a confusing group of acronyms and intimidating when you

don't know much about them. Which test should your child take when and how

do you know? Sometimes homeschool parents become overwhelmed at the

prospect of preparing their children for these tests. They may assume, "If I

ignore them, they might go away." This is a huge mistake. The standard high

school tests do not need to frighten you. Arm yourself with information and a

little preparation, and your student can sail through these milestones and get

great results.

This chapter will give you some tools and resources you can use to begin getting

familiar with these standard tests.

Find answers here!

Most answers to your high school testing questions can be found on two

websites: CollegeBoard.com and ACT.org. The College Board provides the

PSAT, SAT, AP, and CLEP exams. The ACT provides the ACT and PreACT

exams. Both sites offer a wealth of information on test preparation.

The first test

The first standardized test your child will likely experience in high school is the

PSAT, also referred to as the practice SAT or the pre-SAT. Your student can take

the PSAT in tenth grade for fun, but only the PSAT taken in eleventh grade

counts toward the National Merit Scholarship. It's only offered once each year,

so it's easy to let it slip past. Register for the test before September of your

student's junior year.

College admission exams

Next come the college admission tests: the SAT and ACT. They are often taken

in the spring of eleventh grade and repeated only if necessary. Both are college

admission tests and most colleges accept either one.

Subject tests

Next you can take some time to think about additional subject tests to measure

knowledge in specific areas. SAT Subject Tests are best taken immediately after

your child completes each subject. For example, have your child take the SAT

Subject Test in French right after they finish studying French.

Consider having your child take AP exams when they finish courses as well.

These are more intensive subject tests that determine if your child knows as

Page 16: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make - Amazon S3 · Also From The HomeScholar

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make Homeschooling High School 16

Copyright 2017 The HomeScholar, LLC HomeHighSchoolHelp.com

much as a college student in that subject. Sure, they are difficult, but they can

earn college credit!

CLEP exams are similar to AP, because they also measure a college amount of

learning. For more information on CLEP exams, check out my Coffee Break

Book on How to Homeschool College.

Answers may vary

Ask colleges which tests they accept and prefer, because it varies widely by

college! To be honest, though, colleges want more than classes and test scores.

In the next chapter, I’ll be talking about the other things you need to provide.

Mistake 4: Failing to Develop Your Student's Area of Passion

We have talked about the importance of gearing your homeschool toward

college, and how course selection and standardized tests can influence your

child’s success at earning college admission. Did you know that colleges care

about things other than courses and tests? The fourth biggest mistake parents

make is not encouraging their children’s unique gifts.

This chapter will focus on developing your student’s non-academic passions. In

the push toward academic excellence, some parents may forget this aspect of

their student's development. This is a mistake that can hurt your children's

development as well as their college chances.

Focus on character

You want your child to have good character and strong moral fiber. You want

your child to be well-rounded, and colleges want this too! What you do to shape

your child’s character can only help them to prepare for college and for life!

Encourage your child to volunteer for community service. Consider

employment, internships, or apprenticeships. Encourage activities such as

sports, music, art, and other experiences. Follow their interests as they grow

older, instead of having them follow yours. Homeschooling is such an efficient

way to educate your child that you will have ample time for academics as well as

the pursuit of their passion.

Colleges love passion

Colleges love to see kids who are passionate about something. This is the "secret

sauce" in the college admission recipe! They can see this elusive "passion" in

extra-curricular activities that students continue through all four years of high

school. Colleges prefer to see students who focus on one or two areas of

specialization, rather than dabbling in a little of everything. Development of

passion is an important aspect of college planning for all students, not only the

gifted and talented.

Academic and non-academic specialization

Sometimes a child might specialize in an academic subject, such as a topic in

history or science. Their interests might also be non-academic. They may love

social services or developing their own business. Wherever their passion lies,

allow your child the time and ability to pursue it. Their interests can (and

should!) be put on the transcript, but not always. Sometimes it will simply be a

glowing star on their activity list.

Specialization is important, whether children go to college or not! It can help

shape them into great citizens, as they seek a career fit according to their

interests.

The missing ingredient

What if you successfully avoided all these mistakes? Is it still possible to "drop

the ball" in your homeschool?

Unfortunately, the answer is "yes" - if you fall into the trap I’ll discuss in the

next chapter. As a hint, this is the area that happens to be my specialty! You can

Page 20: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make - Amazon S3 · Also From The HomeScholar

probably figure out what it is if you read the testimonial at the bottom of this

page. That's right, it is the dreaded homeschool transcript!

Don't worry, though, it's not too scary. The truth is that most of my clients

approach me with questions about record keeping first. It seems to be what

every parent of high school students is stressed about.

The next chapter will include much more about record keeping and transcripts.

In the meantime, rest assured that you can do this, and I can help you succeed!

FEATURED RESOURCE:

Identifying your child’s passion can be difficult, and it's something I deal with

frequently in my Gold Care Club. Homeschooling high school is serious business

and the stakes for your child’s future are high. I have created on online support

system for all parents who are committed to homeschooling their kids through

graduation. The HomeScholar Gold Care Club is like a 24/7 high school support

Check it out today!

"I just wanted to say "thank you SO much" once again for all your help and

input. I don't know if this adequately expresses how appreciated your wise

counsel is and what a help it's been to me. I would be fumbling and

procrastinating if I had not ordered your Total Transcript Solution and

become a member of your Gold Care Club. I'm so glad my husband said OK

to letting me stay on as a member. It's funny that you would be impressed

that we are visiting colleges, because, really, without your training, I'd

probably be going along with our day-to-day homeschool business, with

college in the back of my mind, but not proactively preparing. I cannot tell

you how much I have learned from you and your materials--I just wish I

knew all this going into freshman year instead of senior year.

But then I started perusing the Gold Care site, emailing and talking with

you, ordering other materials, etc., which all has served to get me planning

and moving toward accomplishing some goals that needed to be addressed.

I feel as if I have had a crash course in college admissions, and now I am so

into it, burning the midnight oils nearly every night. I have learned SO

MUCH from your materials. You have been more helpful than I can express

in jumpstarting me and educating me every step of the way. So, I just

wanted to say a very sincere thank you for being there for me and all of us

who need a hand to hold as we navigate these uncharted waters."

-Ann in Connecticut

"I spent an entire morning perusing Lee’s Gold Club Care materials, and I

was thoroughly impressed by the breadth and depth of information she

provides. As a busy homeschooler, you don't have time to spend hours upon

hours conducting research about high school. Take advantage of the work

Lee has done for you to prepare how-to videos, provide information on

standardized tests and college scholarships, create college preparation

guides, give curriculum advice, share links to the web's best homeschool

resources, and write articles that are so amazingly informative, I had to

return to the Gold Care Club again ... and again ... and again ..."

Mistake 5: Forgetting about High School Records

The first four errors I’ve discussed are frequently made, but easily corrected.

Now you know about aiming for college, planning high school courses, taking

tests, and emphasizing specialization. In this chapter, we will deal with the

biggie - the dreaded homeschool records. Keeping homeschool records is

intimidating for everyone, whether or not you consider yourself an organized

person. I know because I am organized and homeschool record keeping was

something I procrastinated about for too long.

In this chapter, I will share with you the what, why, and how of homeschool

records management.

Keep high school records

Your child needs a transcript to get into college and you need to keep records in

order to make a transcript. The lesson? Start keeping records, of course! If

nothing else, get a giant Rubbermaid tub and start putting papers into it, so

you'll have some records to fall back on.

Once you decide which colleges your child will apply to, ask these colleges which

high school records they want from you. It can vary significantly, and there is no

way to know unless you ask.

Page 23: The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make - Amazon S3 · Also From The HomeScholar

The 5 Biggest Mistakes Parents Make Homeschooling High School 23

Copyright 2017 The HomeScholar, LLC HomeHighSchoolHelp.com

What colleges want

A college may only ask for a transcript. Some colleges also want a simple

reading list, while others want exhaustive course descriptions with grading

criteria. Some college have strange and unique requirements. Find out their

requirements early so you can give them what they want.

I always recommend keeping something from every class in high school - you

never know what a college will want. One college asked me for an English paper

I had graded. Another college wanted subject tests in many different areas.

Remember, like a Boy Scout, "always be prepared!"

Don't be denied

One young homeschooler I know was denied admission to college, even though

she had wonderful grades from community college and had already earned her

A.A. degree. Why? She failed to produce a homeschool transcript! A transcript is

part of your child's educational background that you have to provide.

At the end of homeschooling (at the end of senior year), remember to send the

college a final transcript that includes graduation date, final grades and grade

point average. The transcript you submit for college admission needs to have

these final details once they graduate!

Make a transcript

If your child will be going to college, the truth is that you will need to make a

transcript. Of course, it's easy for me to say "make a transcript on your home

computer using a Word or Excel Document." It's another thing to get it done.

Mistake 6 (Bonus Blunder!): Not Celebrating Success!

I've talked about all five of the biggest mistakes parents make when

homeschooling high school! There is one more mistake I’d like to mention as we

close this ebook – a bonus, if you will. The last mistake parents make is not

celebrating their student’s successes! When they finish high school, remember

to provide some sort of “closing ceremony” for this long series of Olympic events

we call homeschooling!

Finish the high school transcript so you have a record of your child’s

accomplishments, whether they go to college or not. Give them a high school

diploma to show they are a high school graduate. You can buy a diploma from

www.HomeschoolDiploma.com.

Throw a graduation party and show the world how proud you are! Sometimes

these graduation celebrations involve getting senior portraits, so you can send a

picture of the graduate to all your friends and family. At our party, we invited

our friends from church and community, as well as family members. We bought

a cap and gown for our graduates, which they wore for the party. I served a

buffet and cake and ice cream. My husband gave a short speech and we

presented their high school diplomas in our backyard. We took tons of pictures,

but we made even more memories. Provide a memorable, meaningful

experience for your teen so they know they have achieved a real milestone!

I've enjoyed sharing with you some of my lessons learned about homeschooling

high school. I hope they have been helpful to you. If you haven't visited my blog,

FEATURED RESOURCE

A funny thing happened at our homeschool

graduation that was the seed for The HomeScholar

ministry. When my homeschool mom friends

spotted the comprehensive homeschool records I

had put together for each boy (which, of course, I

displayed proudly), they went ga-ga! These were

the records that were integral to our boys both

winning full-tuition scholarships to their first choice university. My friends said

“How did you do that!” and “You have to teach me!” The end result of these

conversations is my Comprehensive Record Solution. This was the single most

important strategy we employed to gain college admission and win juicy

scholarships. Since then, it has helped hundreds of families do likewise. You

owe it to yourself to check it out today.

“I have been following your advice for 3 years now! Last year I leaped into

the Gold Care Club with the purchase of the Comprehensive Record

Solution. I am so thankful for your willingness to mentor the homeschool

community. My family has just gone through the college application process

for the first time. Thanks to you, I felt very aware of what to expect, and

confident in our coursework, preparation and transcript.

We sent a full package, with a cover letter, school profile, table of contents,

transcript and course descriptions to each college our daughter applied to,

though none required anything other than the transcript. Her top three

college choices have already sent acceptance letters with initial scholarship

offers based on GPA and test scores. As a homeschooling mother, teacher,

tutor and guidance counselor, I truly appreciate all you do! ” ~ Kathy in NE
