Greetings Lions, Lioness and Leos of District 201Q2 and welcome to March,
We had a number of Lions presented with
Australia Day Awards around our District recently; my personal congratulations to each of you. Whilst the awards may have been in recognition of public contribution inclusive of your Lions service, it is very pleasing to see your work with Lions also acknowledged.
March is a very important month where Clubs elect their new Club Officers for next year. This is an important time for clubs to re - establish their future direction, where Clubs that may have become a little tired or stale, to look for new leadership with new ideas to refresh the club program. I wish all Clubs a successful election meeting and remember your new club officer details can be installed straight into the MyLCI database by end of March; but District still needs those details via the form PU101 for the Australian Directory. The form PU101 was provided on your club CDRoms at the start of the year.
I hope many Lions are considering attending
the 2014 National Convention in Tamworth
from 2nd to 5th May. Our national Convention provides not only an opportunity to learn more about current Lion programs and hear wonderful keynote speakers, but is a wonderful occasion for fellowship with old Lion friends as well as to meet new ones. There is no doubt that Tamworth will provide wonderful country hospitality, with one
feature – the Denim and Lace Shindig
featuring the Bushwackers.
Our District function this year is a night at the
Tamworth Equine Centre, the largest in the Southern hemisphere. To cap all that off, the Convention special guest is Australia’s own
current International President Barry
Palmer.
I spoke at length last issue about March
Membership Month for World Lions. I hope that most Clubs by now have agreed to undertake some sort of event to enable your Club to grow in different ways. You will need to be reporting progress to your Zone Chairs.
In addition, April has been declared Family
and Friends Month for Lions. Invite family and friends to learn and celebrate with your Lions club in April. Organize a service project, plan an open house or host a lunch or picnic—you decide how to introduce your family and friends to the club you love!
Your Club might consider participating in the
Lions World Lunch Relay on April 4th. The Lions World Lunch Relay is a 24-hour international event that brings families and friends of Lions together in their local communities with those of Lions around the

world. This will start in New Zealand (first on 24 hour clock) and follow on around the world. Start planning your lunch event today by contacting your Zone Chair for details.
The Theme for the 2014/15 Lions Peace
Poster contest has been announced as
Peace, Love and Understanding. Why not contact your local schools for the kids aged 11, 12 or 13 on November 15 this year, to participate in this wonderful global Lions youth program ?
Just a couple of points please – a number of Clubs have been quite late in paying their Christmas cake accounts. This affects the rebate that comes back to district to alleviate your dues. Please make sure next time that these debts are cleared up as soon as equivalent cake monies are received.
Also, regarding Youth of the Year, manuals are available on the national website for running all levels of the Competition. Please access these as they have all the necessary rules and guidelines. It seems that a number of people reporting issues may have not accessed these manuals for information.

Lions Peace Poster Contest Annual Art Contest for Kids
"Our World, Our Future" Tongbram Mahesh Singh, 2013-14 Grand Prize Winner
Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For more than 25 years, millions of children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest.
The theme of the 2014-15 Peace Poster Contest is "Peace, Love and Understanding."Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are eligible to participate.
Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.
Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners.
Peace Poster Contest Awards International winners will be notified on or before February 1 2015.
One international grand prize winner will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony.
Each of the 23 merit award winners will receive a cash award of US$500 and a certificate of achievement.
The work of Lions clubs requires a continuation of
effort by many people. Your support as a member
will insure that the service contributed in your
community and throughout the world can continue.
You've heard it before, but the work of many hands
doing little things brings great results.

night of the convention is now sold out so we suggest Lions get their registration forms in quickly
before other items sell out.
Don’t forget your accommodation – the Abraham Lincoln Motel is now booked out but if you look on
the wotif website there is still plenty of accommodation available in Tamworth for the convention.
Please book early to avoid disappointment.
Organisation is going along smoothly the venue is booked, the catering is under control and bus
transport from your Motel/Hotel to TREC each morning and back each afternoon has been arranged.
We have also arranged buses to take you from your Motel to our Denim and Lace Shindig on the
Monday night; they will also drop you back at the end of the night.
This will be a convention to remember with interesting speakers including our International President
Barry Palmer, fantastic entertainment with a country music cabaret and The Bushwackers appearing
at the Denim and Lace Shindig, plus a partner’s tour with a difference.
So do yourself a favour register now to avoid disappointment!

The Late Lion Frank Koschel September 21, 1924 - January 8, 2014
It was with regret that we saw the passing of Lion Frank Koschel, a long standing Life Member of Mackay North Lions Club. Lion Frank left a lifelong mark on the Club and he will be missed.
Accomplishments of Lion Frank:
• 1961 – Charter member of Broadmeadows Lions Club in Victoria
• 1969 - Charter member of Strathmore Lions Club in Victoria.
• Lion Frank held numerous club positions in Victorian Lions Clubs including: Secretary, Bulletin Editor, Youth Program Chairman, Lions Information Chairman, Activities Arts Festival, Public Relations Chairman and Youth of the Year Chairman.
Lion Frank also held District Positions for District 201P:
• 1971 to 1973 – Youth of the Year Chairman for 2 years.
• 1973 to 1976 – Youth of the Year State Coordinator, Victoria (for 4 years).
In 1977/1978, Lion Frank moved to Queensland and was the Charter President of New Farm Lions Club. As with his Victorian service to Lions Clubs, Lion Frank held several District roles in Queensland:
• 1978/1979 – Cabinet Secretary for District 201Q3.
• 1979/1980 – District Activities Chairman for District 201Q3.
• 1979/1980 – Holder of “Top Ten” Club Service Activity Award
His unselfish work to Lions Clubs in Victoria and Queensland for more than 53 years brought many Awards to Lion Frank.

Lion Frank became a member of Mackay North Lions Club on July 1, 1982. Some of the fondest memories we have of Lion Frank:
In 1991/92 - the Club's Glaucoma Screening Project became a reality with the foresight of President Lion Frank Koschel. Since then, Glaucoma Screenings had been conducted at local Shopping Centres for the past thirteen years with the assistance of Leo Hartley Jnr. and the Eye Care Practitioners of Mackay.
In 1995/96 - the Club became interested in Convoy for Kids and Lions Christmas Cakes were capably run by Lion Frank Koschel and Lion Alan Strickland.
Lion Frank also arranged and organized with Lion Peter Jenkins the selling of Christmas Trees at Mount Pleasant Shopping Centre’s Car Park. The most enjoyable part of this fundraising project was the long drive from Mackay to the National Park at Kolijo and back to get a stock of trees.
Frank will be greatly missed by his Club and a loss to Lions Clubs International.

remembering your club treasurer does

these dues. Treasurers are able to pay
these dues and then have them
authorised at the next board meeting.

with LCI dues we still require payment by

LIONS CORD BLOOD
FOUNDATION INC. Tree of Life
Lions, one of our not so published or known about Foundations is Lions Cord Blood. This Foundation was initiated in 1996 by Lion Laurie Denton of the Lions Club of Waverley in V5 District and since the MD Convention in Queensland in 2006 the Foundation continues to be a Category B project for the Multiple District. The Aims of the Foundation is to supply cryonic chambers for the storage of collected stem cell packages, also to assist with equipment when requested by the 3 major Children’s Hospitals in Melbourne. The Foundation raises funds and awareness through guest speakers, the Lion magazine, District Newsletters and requests for disbursements from Lions and Lioness Clubs throughout Australia. They also run the Grocery Grab between August and October each year. One story that comes to light is the case of twin boys who were diagnosed with Myelomoncytic Leukaemia a very rare condition where both boys needed Stem Cell transplants using cord blood. After the transplants it was a long road to recovery for the boys but today they are both happy and well.
Not all stories have happy endings as the success of transplantation of cord blood depends on the quality of the sample. The Cord blood Bank is currently carrying out research with the view of improving the out comes of such operations from an average of 70% to over 90% survival rate with improved Quality of life. The costs of the collection, storage and processing of the cords does not come cheaply and costs can be up to $3,500 per cord so you can see that this type of research needs funds coming in all the time. The Foundation has recently replaced two Cryoshippers and Cryoshipper Data Loggers which cost the Foundation $6000. The Foundation also needs to fund researchers the cost is around $110,000 just for one and a Cord Blood Collection Nurse at $88,000 so you can see that the Foundation needs funds to continue their great work in and for the community. A misconception in many minds regarding raising funds for Foundations managed by other Districts and Clubs around Australia is the thought of “why fund something that does not actually belong to us?” The answer to that is that almost all and maybe all of the research that is carried out around Australia and in other countries around the world is shared, so everybody benefits from research, you can think back at the cure for Cervical Cancer researched here in Australia by Ian Fraser, that research benefits every female in the world. The Lions Cord Blood Foundation continues to look for funds to continue their work so that many children can look forward to a healthier and longer life, I wonder if each Club could find $100 to show our support. world.

Now that your club is back after the
Christmas recess it is time to think of your club’s fundraising for the year and what
better way than with a Miss Popularity
Entrant.
You have the involvement with your local community and also the family and
friends of your entrant and possible new
members from this source. If you feel that
the fundraising is too much for a small
club then please think about a zone
entrant. With all clubs in the zone
combining to fund raise for one entrant
the job is much easier. “Many hands make light work”. Think of one fundraiser
per club and then join for a zone
function. What fun and friendship there
will be and getting to know your fellow
Lions and their families.
The Quest closes on the 31st July 2012
and the Judging is at the District
convention, at Camp Kanga,, on the
weekend of the 21st, 22nd and 23rd
November 2014.
The entry cost is $100.00 with $1,000 to be
raised by 31st August and $1,500.00 to be
raised by 30th September 2012 to be
eligible for judging. All relevant details
are on the district website or available
from me.
If your club has an entrant can you
please get your entry form to me as soon
as possible so I can post a Miss Popularity
sash to your entrant so she can wear it at
fundraising events.

Lions Biggest BBQ 2014
There are quite a few Clubs who will be participating in Australia’s Biggest BBQ raising funds for Australian Childhood Cancer Research Foundation, and we thank you for that.
Some questions have been asked and I lead them to the ALCCRF Website which is full of everything you need to know about the Foundation, facts and figures etc, please read it.
The most asked question to date is “do we have to register?” The answer to that is, it is better to register so that you can obtain all the advertising you need for the day, this will automatically be sent to you once you have registered, so get in early.
The website is found in www.lionsclubs.org.au, Foundations, Childhood Cancer, downloads, then Intention to Participate Form, simple.
If you need help or just want a question answered don’t hesitate to call.

For those without internet access, a copy is also included in this newsletter. Early Bird registrations with accompanying 50% payment ($AUS50) are now being received. Register prior to cut off date of 30/6/2014 and go in the draw for prizes to be drawn at the end of the Tamworth MD 201 Convention but also go in the major draw including ANZI Adelaide accommodation.
For those attending actual Forums the registration fee applies but for Lions partners/friends/family members not attending forums but wishing to attend lunches/dinners etc., no registration fee will apply, the only cost will be for the social events attended.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR MEMBERS – CLUB CARE.
“A TRUE STORY” FROM ROLLINGSTONE LIONS OPENING CEREMONY 29TH MARCH 2013 – “THE LION TERRY GILES MEMORIAL LIONS DEN” One of the greatest things we as Lions can do is to look after our club’s greatest asset – our Lions Members and their Family. We hear about this on a regular basis – at annual Club Officer Training, during District Governor and Zone Chairperson visits, and in the Australian Lion – so what does it really mean. All Clubs have a Membership Chairperson, with many also having a Club Care Chairperson who has responsibility for following up members who are not attending activities, absent through illness or other reasons, and on many occasions sending “get well” and “birthday cards”. Nothing wrong with that – after all it is simply looking after our member! Rollingstone And District Lions Club just north of Townsville in District 201Q2 was chartered in March 2007, and in 2009 Charter Member Lion Terry Giles, a quiet community minded builder who had done some wonderful things in our community including much volunteer work in building our Community Centre, who was divorced and estranged from his two married children, passed away from pancreatic cancer. In the last few months he was with us, Lions quietly became his support network, his extended “family”, who helped him through his last days. Some of the things Lions did included:-
• A major cleanup of his home and surrounds • Helped to finish his home – so it could be sold as part of his estate. You see – he was far
too busy helping others that he just never got around to finishing his own home • Helped with his daily bathing and hygiene, and prepared and helped him eat his meals • Drove him into the Townsville Hospital for his regular, and towards the end weekly –
oncology appointments. • Helped him to reconcile with his children, and supported his family when they did come to
visit in the last few weeks before his passing. • When they could not be here for his final hours, ensured that two of our Lions were with
him in hospital when he departed this earthly life, because no one should pass alone.
Nothing unusual here, and I expect all of our clubs would do similar if placed in the same circumstances. However, Terry really appreciated the support from his Lions Family, and as he finalised his will and with the understanding and support of his family, he left a small sum of money to his Lions club to help them establish a permanent facility where they could meet & store their gear. In his wildest dreams, I am sure he could not have envisaged the lasting legacy of our new Lions Building. With the wonderful support of our community who donated much of the materials and their professional expertise, the “Lion Terry Giles Memorial Lions Den” with an outlay of approx $45,000 but worth $200,000 is a wonderful tribute to a dedicated Lion, and proof that in our case, Rollingstone Lions Club is indeed the beneficiary of “Club Care” in it’s simplest form. Whitsunday Lions Harry Major celebrated his 80th Birthday with the club on February 8th. Congratulations from the club go to a wonderful man and a Great Lion!

YUNGABURRA LIONESS CLUB
GOOSED
If you happen to be in Yungaburra on a Friday night, you will no doubt check out the Historic Lake Eacham Hotel, affectionately known far and wide as the Yungaburra Pub. While there you will no doubt buy a ticket or two in the weekly Goose. Every Friday night, various community groups are rostered to run the Goose as a very important source of fund raising in our small community.
Over the years, the numbers that are used to draw the prizes have become harder to read, some numbers have disappeared to heavens knows where and generally the Goose barrel needed seeing to. Enter the Yungaburra Lioness. Their mission, if they chose to accept it, was to organise the 2000 numbers, so that good old Goose barrel would be useful for many more years to come. Could they do it? Would they do it?

TOP AWARD FOR A
MALANDA LION
Malanda identity Kath Scully has been awarded a
Melvin Jones Fellowship – the highest award a
Lions Club can make. The presentation was made
by President Bruce Campbell on 2 February.
Kath, partner in a Malanda Accounting firm, is
well known locally and is about to become even
more well known throughout North Queensland.
She is in the pipeline to become Lions District
Governor in 2015-16 overseeing some 92 clubs
from Sarina northwards and within PNG.
Her community activities began when she joined
the St John Ambulance Brigade as a keen 10 year
old and she has belonged to service organizations
ever since, including Scouts and the Plunket
Society in NZ, Scouts, CWA and Rotary in PNG
and she joined the Lions Club of Malanda in
2002. She was awarded an Eacham Shire
Council’s Commendation Certificate for
Community Service in 2008 and has also recently
served a term on the board of disability
employment services agency T.E.A.
She has been President, Treasurer, Chair of
various committees in the Malanda Club and is
also a member of the Yungaburra Lioness Club.
Outside the local scene she has been Zone
Chairman 2009-2010, 2010-11 & 2011-12. Host
Committee Treasurer for the Lions International
President’s board meeting at Port Douglas 2013.
For her work in this area Kath has been awarded
a James D Richardson Honour Award.
During the time that Kath has been a Lions
member she has attended 8 District Conventions
and was a member of the organizing committee
for the 2011 Tablelands Convention.
Truly a tireless member well worth our
recognition.
