Congratulations to our Lipton Team for winning the GYA Sportsmanship
Award!! Our Junior Team won this award at the Junior Lipton Regatta in July.
Thanks for all of the members and staff who came out to Bay-Waveland Yacht
Club this past weekend to cheer our team on! We definitely had the largest cheer-
ing group there! What an honor for our sailors and our club to win the GYA
Sportsmanship Award at both Junior Lipton and the Sir Thomas Lipton Challenge
Cup Regatta! Great job to all who were involved in both of these events!
Now we are getting ready for the Back To School Regatta, which we are hosting.
It is the 5th Annual Dinghy Challenge Cup and Viper 640 Gulf Coast Champion-
ship. Mark your calendars for September 15 and 16. Come out and volunteer and
have a great time!
Come out on Wednesday evenings and watch our Harbor Mice develop their sail-
ing skills. We want to encourage this group because they are our future PYC sail-
ors! Remember, we also offer Adult Sailing Lessons so if you know someone
who might like to learn to sail, have them Contact Sailing Director Mike McKnight
If you haven’t been over to our boatyard, please check out the completed improve-
ments over there!
Be sure to check out all of the great activities we have planned for September!
Come to Saints and LSU games! Enjoy great music at our Open Mic every month
and many other fun plans!

Rear Commodore As we enter the Fall and Summer activities wind down, PYC finds itself in a relatively good position.
Sail Camp was a great success this year. Our sail camp staff worked tirelessly to ensure that all campers had a wonderful
experience. We had huge classes each session and our staff handled it seamlessly.
Next month the Finance Committee and the Board will begin the process of developing a budget for 2019.
See you at the bar.

Happy September, PYC family! I hope this chart finds everyone readjusted to school schedules and enjoying the
small bits of cooler air we've had here and there. September is a month for joining new activities. The kids are
starting sports and the weather is cooling off so people want to venture outside again. Encourage your friends that
aren't members to consider joining us this Fall! And spread the word about Adult Sailing classes. The kids did all
the sail learning this summer. Let's get more adults out there!
I hope to see you at the club soon! I know our super sailors were very busy lately. Make sure to congratulate them
and ask for race stories if you see them in the club!
Holly Parker
Thank you to everyone who came to support our Lipton team at Bay Waveland YC!! It truly meant a lot to myself and the rest
of the team. Although we didn't get the results we had hoped for, our yacht club won the sportsmanship award! We now have
won both the Jr. Lipton and Lipton sportsmanship award this year. That is something that Pontchartrain should be very proud
of!
We now have 2 Capdeveille regattas left, and we are still in a very strong position to win the overall series! The next one will
be the last weekend in September at Fairhope YC.
Also on September 15/16 we will be hosting the Viper 640 Gulf Coast Championship. We will have some great competition
here, and I hope to see many of our members out to enjoy the festivities, and help continue to grow the well respected reputa-
tion that our club has and continues to achieve! Let's show these sailors a great time!

Juniors
In August the sail camp sessions wrapped up with a wonderful banquet and awards. This year’s sail camp was a huge suc-
cess both financially and in hopefully recruiting some future juniors and families.
The Junior Team focused on practice for the upcoming Back to School regatta and getting some time with the Viper teams
for the Lipton Cup event.
There was a 420 clinic held at Pass in August attended by Pontchartrain Juniors, led by the Tulane Sailing Team coach. It
was both on and off water instruction and proved to be a great success. This was followed by the GYA 420 Championships
where Matthew Dupuy and Dylan McKnight sailed as a team. The field was very deep with 17 boats competing. Our jun-
iors are just cutting their teeth on the 420 and finished 13th but gained much experience.
For the Galloway regatta in Gulfport Liam Eddy was a shinning
star on his Opti in the green fleet, placing in the top 3 in every
race with more than a dozen boats racing. Matthew Dupuy
placed third in the Laser Radial which was the GYA Champion-
ship event for this class. Sunday racing was cut short by
weather but at least it made for a great picture!
We are 2 weeks away from Back to School and the 5th annual dinghy challenge cup. Any volunteers please contact Paul Rees at [email protected]. Paul Rees
Pontchartrain Sailing Foundation News
Summer 2018 Update from Pontchartrain Sailing Foundation
The Pontchartrain Sailing Foundation has had a very positive first year of operations. The primary mission of the foundation is to pro-
mote youth sailing, seamanship and safe boating skills in our community. In its first year PSF has secured cash and vessel donations in
excess of $50,000. PSF has paid out cash grants including funding of sail camp tuition at Pontchartrain Yacht Club. A hurricane relief
fundraising campaign last fall raised over $4,000 that was awarded to a catholic school and needy family in Puerto Rico who were dev-
astated by Hurricane Maria.
PSF has worked to provide boats for the use of the junior sailing programs at Pontchartrain Yacht Club including the #2 Viper donated
by the Kramer family and a Vanguard 15. This cooperative endeavor has resulted in excellent training opportunities to the junior sail-
ors on the Viper that would not have otherwise been possible.
PSF became the chartered organization that sponsors two local Sea Scouts Ships, which are the maritime/boating divisions of the Boy
Scouts of America. PSF, through donations from individuals, has provided the Sea Scouts with vessels, dinghies, equipment and an
operational base on Bayou Castine for docking boats, weekly training and events, and for campouts at the Happy Knoll site, which the
Sea Scouts have designated as “Tortuga”. The Sea Scouts Ships are run by the kids themselves. They are an exceptional group of
young men and women who have dedicated a significant portion of their free time to gaining experience and knowledge in maritime
endeavors, and also providing public service in our community. The Sea Scouts have twice held sailing training events at Pontchar-
train Yacht Club for the Scouts, chartering out several of the club’s Scots and the instruction of Coach Mike for the day. PSF and the
Sea Scouts look forward to continuing and growing this relationship with Pontchartrain yacht Club.
PSF is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) public charity and donations are deductible for income tax purposes. Please consider PSF for donations
of funds and good condition boats and equipment. Check out the PSF Facebook page for more information or contact Paul Rees to
make a donation ([email protected]).
PSF is also a registered charity with AMAZON SMILE. Amazon Smile is an identical web site of Amazon except that Amazon donates a
portion of all purchases to your designated charity. Use your same login and bookmark Amazon Smile instead of Amazon and please
designate PSF as your charity.
PSF thanks all Pontchartrain members for their continued support.
Paul Rees, Executive Director.

We have another busy month planned for September. The month started off with the Lipton regatta with four of our juniors
attending…….Matthew Dupuy, Dylan McKnight, Jay Graham and Liam Eddy.
We have our annual Back To School Regatta on the 15th and 16th and hope that all of our Juniors will participate either in
racing or race committee.
Our Sailing Team practices are scheduled for every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30; weather permitting. In addition, we have
Sunday Viper practices scheduled for September 9th and 23rd.
Harbor Mice has already been hugely successful with 9 kids participating in the program every Wednesday evening through
the 26th of September.
We have a beginner adult sailing clinic on the 8th and 9th with an introduction to sailing day on the 22nd.
As our Junior Sailors continue to learn and grow, I anticipate an even more successful month of sailing.
See you on the water!
