Student Theatre ArtsRecognition Awards

The Noel S. Ruiz Theartre at

CM Performing Arts CenterSunday June 4, 2017

Southside Hospital salutes the Islip Arts Council on its 40th anniversary.

Congratulations to Islip High School’s performing arts students for their incredible talents.

Donna Moravick, RN, NP, MSN, MBAExecutive Director Southside Hospital

Welcome to the 2017 Teeny Awards.

I can hardly believe that this is our ninth year of presenting the Teeny Awards Program – over 2,000 high school students from the Town of Islip – all are recognized for their talents.

Thank you to all Directors of Performing Arts, Music Directors, and Visual Arts Directors. We applaud your dedication and energy. As the backbone of the Teeny Awards Program we thank you for your leadership and teaching skills. You are an excellent role model for our students.

Since we introduced the “Career Path to Success” initiative, we’ve taken the Teeny Awards Program to the next level by placing increased emphasis on the pursuit of careers in performing arts and related areas. Through the generosity of the Islip Arts Council Board of Directors we can now award several scholarships to students this evening. A special thank you to Lillian Barbash, Founder and Director Emeritus of the Islip Arts Council, who has made this possible.

The Teeny Awards is patterned after the Tony Awards. The mission of the Teeny Awards is to recognize and celebrate talented high school theater students, to encourage them to pursue their dreams, and to stimulate local interest while developing an understanding of the value of theater education in a well-rounded school curriculum. Community pride in our high school theatrical productions is just as important as the pride and enthusiasm shown for school sports.

A special thank you to Amy McGrath. Amy stepped in as the Interim Program Director back in October. She took over the reins and hasn’t let go since. Without her, there would not have been a Teeny Awards program this year. She worked with the schools, the judges, and directors, and made sure that every school production was adjudicated professionally and fairly. Then she wrote, produced, and directed the program for this evening. I also want to thank Susan Jeffares for her attention to detail and for stepping in as Stage Director/Manager once again. And, for the first time ever, we have a former two-time Teeny Awards Winner, Courtney Kenyon, who just graduated from Wagner College, as Choreographer. Thanks to all of them and the volunteers who made this program happen.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Islip Arts Council, thank you for sharing in this evening with us and special thanks to all the students who worked on stage, backstage, or off-stage and brought joy and wonder to the audience. Your enthusiasm and energy enriched our lives.

We gratefully acknowledge the sponsors who made it possible for us to present this event and the memories to be treasured for years to come. We are very proud to present the Teeny Awards and further the education of our theater students in the Town of Islip.

Lynda A. Moran

PROGRAM CRITERIA

Tonight’s presentation of awards is the result of months of work by the Islip Arts Council and the Town of Islip School Districts. The goal of this program is to bring attention and give recognition to the hundreds of high school students, dedicated and talented directors, and conductors, artistic and technical staff, who give countless hours in addition to their academic responsibilities, to provide meaningful theatrical experiences for their students as well as the audience of the Town of Islip Community.

It begins with each high school submitting their comedy/drama and musical productions for viewing by trained, anonymous judges with verified credentials. Production Awards are submitted by district liaisons to the program and students submitted by their director’s for Performance awards are evaluated by our assigned judges using a written rubric format established by the East End Arts Council, founders of this program.

Pit Orchestra Awards are given to orchestras which must be comprised of a minimum of 85% student musicians and Director’s Choice Awards are chosen by the director of each production and may be nominated in any capacity in which the director believes a student’s contribution was a force in the overall success of the production.

Outstanding Cameo Awards are performances that were observed by judges as standing out amongst a talented cast and submitted for consideration with the same scoring rubric required for all other performance awards.

All Performance Awards are individually scored with points totaled through a strict rubric of skills in various aspects of their individual performances. Points are totaled and divided by the number of judges who viewed the performance. A minimum average is predetermined based on the number of submissions in a particular category. This year, the scores in the category of outstanding performances by a leading actor and actress were beyond anything we have ever experienced and in many cases separated by as little as .15% of a point. This situation, a credit to the excellence being achieved by so many students, dictated that we recognize a larger number of students than in past years. The Teeny Award will be given to the student in each category that received the highest score and is known only by the program director and engraver until it is announced tonight.

Best Ensemble Comedy/Drama and Best Ensemble Musical are awarded to the production that scored the highest for their all-around ensemble achievement as performed by students. Various districts have differences in budget allocations for their productions, scenery, costumes, and special effects so these criteria are not included in the evaluation.

The Students performing selections this evening, from their various shows, were invited by the IAC based on judges’ recommendations. Selection is based on the professional standard of the piece, appropriateness for a general audience, and its entertainment values.

The Teeny Awards Program was founded in 2002 by the East End Arts and Humanities Council to recognize excellence in high school theater. A movement, now presented in various forms across Long Island and beyond, continues to support exposure and recognition to students of this important art form.
