Welcome Dear special guest, dear participants,

A heartfelt welcome to you all to this anniversary event!

This edition of our annual conferences celebrates our 10 years of activity in ELT and 10 years of fresh ideas and support offered to the teachers of English and their students all over Romania.

To us, this past decade has been a period of continuous and sustained effort to give shape to our initial idea of building an ELT book centre where you could find it all: variety, special offers and expertise. We may have not managed to accomplish the initial dream completely, but we have certainly advanced a lot towards it. Your presence in such an amazing number at our top event of the year is a confirmation of that.

We couldn’t have reached here without the support of our international partners whom I would like to address special thanks for standing by us all along this decade and for trusting us.

This year’s conference programme is very rich in ideas and speakers and we believe there is something new, something useful and something interesting for every single participant. We invite you all to make the most out of the time spent together with us and we assure you we are doing our best to be not only your favourite book supplier, but your trustworthy ELT counsellor and friend!

With best wishes,Daniela VaduvaFischer InternationalManaging Director

BUCHAREST is a political, administrative, economic and cultural centre, with the earliest proofs of organised social life dating back to the Paleolithic Age. The first written record about this town is from September 20th, 1459. Bucharest, the most important urban centre of Romania, is not only a tourist spot of prime importance but also a gateway and starting point for tourist destinations across the country. Large parks have been arranged to complete the architecture of its natural lakes and many restaurants and pubs have been built to increase the attraction in their immediate proximity. The scenery is completed by the picturesque monasteries of Cernica and Pasarea, and many other 16th -17th century churches hidden between blocks and houses. An opera house, many theatres and even more museums complete the picture. Bucharest also boasts some gigantic communist buildings as well: the House of the Printing Press and the second largest building in the world, The Palace of Parliament.

ALEX WARREN, National Geographic Learning

Who: Having studied history at university and worked as a journalist for several years, Alex decided it was time to travel the world; and it was this that sparked his love affair with ELT. With a desire to impart his English language knowledge, on returning to the UK he took his first foray into the world of teaching English, completing his CELTA qualification in sunny Bournemouth. Such was his love of teaching and desire to develop, he soon took on the challenge of the DELTA while juggling various teaching commitments. For the last six years Alex has been working as an Academic Director and teacher trainer at a successful private language school. Taking great pride in developing teachers he guided them and the school to consistently excellent British Council scores, with notable strengths in the CPD and teacher training programme that he implemented and ran. The move into teacher training on a permanent basis was only a matter of time and Alex is now enjoying developing teachers on an international scale.

What: Heads or Tails – To Flip or Not to Flip?“To flip or not to flip?”, that is indeed the question. As teaching innovations go, the concept of the flipped classroom has continued to gather momentum in all walks of education since its almost accidental inception in middle America in 2007. But what exactly is the flipped classroom, how do we do it and why should we sit up and take notice? More to the point, is it even relevant to the English language classroom? In this talk Alex Warren explores the development of the flipped classroom, the opportunities it presents and examines whether or not it has a place in the world of ELT. The talk will make reference to NGL’s popular course, Life.

What: ‘Big is Beautiful’ – The Challenges and Opportunities of Teaching Large ClassesTeaching large classes is something which is experienced around the world and is something which is becoming more prevalent with increasing student populations. Not only can this cause class management issues for teachers, but more importantly it can create developmental problems for students with the acquisition and production of language. This session aims to look at some of the issues surrounding teaching large classes, but also looks at the opportunities they present and practical ideas to help, both for the teacher and for the student. The talk will make reference to NGL’s leading secondary-level course, Close-Up.

TWINKLE

STAR

ALEXANDRA BUTNARU, Twinkle Star

Who: Alexandra is an experienced EFL teacher and teacher trainer from Iași, Romania. After CELTA and an MA in Applied Linguistics, thousands of classes at Twinkle Star Language School, hundreds of successful Cambridge exam candidates, reasearching a new ‘monomythical’ approach to teaching, she has decided to start sharing her ideas and discoveries with fellow professionals. Keen on technology, films, comics, music, and travelling, Alexandra believes that teaching is a never-ending learning story.

What: Just keep testing! ‘Tests are fun, no reason for worries’, said no student or TED speaker ever. And that happens because tests are often associated with teachers’ needs, more or less fair assessment, low scores, ranks, error correction, or teacher-parent meetings. However, there are several teacher-tested easy-to-apply ways of transforming them into real learning and motivation enhancers.

ANA MARIA OBEZARU, Cooperative Learning Academy of Snagov

Who: Ana-Maria Obezaru is an English and French Language teacher with a lot of experience in primary and secondary schools as well as international IB World schools. She holds a BA in Foreign Languages and Literatures and she is a Masterand in Innovative Teaching Methodology of University of Bucharest. Ana-Maria teaches English as a foreign language to children of all ages and she is keen on teaching students based on a transdisciplinary approach, helping students understand what is authentic and relevant to the real world. At the moment she is an International Baccalaureate Coordinator in a private school based in Bucharest and collaborates with CLA Snagov as a teacher trainer.

What: Jolly Grammar is FunTraditionally, grammar was seen as a formal academic subject, far too difficult for young children to learn. However, with the Jolly Grammar programme, young children can be introduced to grammatical concepts in a fun and accessible way.

As a teacher, lecturer and teacher trainer, he has worked in more than forty countries. He also spent ten years as a radio producer for the BBC World Service and he is currently writing and producing a long-running ELT soap opera for the British Council for broadcast on local radio stations around the world.

What: BEYOND THE CARROT & THE STICK. MOTIVATING LEARNERSFor a long time, much thinking about motivation in the classroom and the workplace has been dominated by the carrot and the stick - pass and fail grades, promotions and demotions, incentives and penalties. But, intuitively, many of us suspect that there are other – and better – ways to motivate both ourselves and our students. So, in this talk, David Evans looks at how else we can make learning meaningful. He’ll talk about ways of developing learner autonomy, harnessing our inner drive and learning to embrace failure instead of fearing it.

What: Top TED Ideas for TeachersTED Talks offer ideas worth sharing on a dazzling range of subjects from art to zoology but which of these ideas are most relevant to students and teachers? In this workshop, David Evans chooses some of TED’s most interesting and thought-provoking ideas and discusses how they can breathe new life into the classroom. The talk will include video clips from a number of TED Talks and will also make reference to the new National Geographic Learning course, Keynote.

He still lives in Paris without wife or cat, but last summer, his son got married, his daughter moved into her own flat and he started playing the clarinet again.

What: Let’s Think About Teaching Today’s Teenagers We’ll be looking at how the new secondary course THiNK helps meet the challenge of teaching today’s teenagers by going beyond building strong language skills to developing the whole learner. Train to Think, Think Values and Think Self-esteem activities develop important critical thinking skills and offer opportunities for reflection on opinions and values. Digital materials appeal to ‘screenagers’ and Think (Cambridge) Exams focuses on ensuring both academic and lifelong success.

She is also co-author of a video based teacher training course: Observing English Lessons. She is a Pilgrims trainer and editor of HLT Magazine.

What: 21st Century Skills in ELT21st century skills is a term we have been hearing recently in various contexts. It refers to teaching for the future in new changing learning environments, developing thinking tools, being creative and innovative together, and preparing for future careers. This talk explores how ELT can embrace this trend by helping learners become critical thinkers, effective communicators and good collaborators.

What: Teaching vocabulary the right wayTeaching vocabulary often means teaching single words. Recent research shows that this is not necessarily the most effective way. Single words function in ‘chunks’ which need to be taught from the very beginning to ensure successful use of lexis. This workshop presents some background information referring to the Lexical Approach and practical ideas implementing this approach.

This informative session looks at examples of grammar, vocabulary, teen-speak and online-speak pertinent to language learners that are currently in this state of flux.

What: Extended Speaking in the Classroom This practical and interactive session looks at a tried-and-tested extended speaking activity that can add a spoken element to any lesson or topic and at any level of proficiency. We will also look at how a simple pre-task planning stage can result in increased fluency, complexity and in particular grammatical accuracy. Along the way, we will listen to and briefly assess a recording of a teenage learner of English undertaking such a task. You will leave the session with some real take-away classroom ideas that you can immediately incorporate into your teaching.

EDUCATION

FIRST

She is also involved in English courses design, writing and publishing English learning children’s books (“Ziggy and Zaggy: Adventures in Englishland” and “Ziggy and Zaggy in Storyland”), writing online articles, as well as designing and hosting workshops and webinars on areas of ELT, such as developing speaking skills, giving feedback, multiple intelligences and learner styles. Marilena’s main interests in the field of ELT consist of researching teaching strategies with a focus on exam preparation classes and methods of engaging young learners by nurturing the diversity of learner styles and multiple intelligences.

What: Engaging students through VideoAs technology becomes ever more popular among children and young adults alike, as teachers we feel the pressure, as well as the necessity to find a way to compete with this “distraction” from learning. What if we did not think of it as an obstacle, but rather as an opportunity? This plenary is focused on presenting stimulating and learner oriented means of including videos in the process of learning English, one of the reasons being the fact that many classrooms nowadays are video ready or can easily become so. As implementing video input is no longer a difficult task to achieve in class, perhaps the good old clip, footage or movie scene could be reconsidered and revived in a way that engages the students more and works along the lines of acknowledging the fact that they truly are digital natives and that the use of technology for educational purposes should be as natural to teachers as it is to their students.

RABAH BENGHERABI, Education First

He particularly enjoys teaching exam classes, conducting teacher training and, when outside work, sea swimming and bread baking.

What: Task-Based Learning versus Project Based LearningComparing these two semi-formal frameworks to highlights their differences and potential to make students more actively involved in directing their own learning and taking learning beyond the classroom. Rabah will cover practical techniques for the inclusion of projects and tasks in your planned teaching with examples and ready to go practical task and project ideas which teachers can implement in their own classrooms. What: Implementing Blended LearningEffective blended learning doesn’t stop with using the technology provided by the school but also students’ own computers, tablets and smartphones inside and outside the classroom. The session for school managers and teachers draws on lessons learned from EF’s ten years of research and use of classroom technology to share ‘what works’. We will focus not just on the technology itself but share frameworks and task types that promote acquisition rich interaction.
