    Pentecost When? Who? Why?

Pentecost is not just the Sunday we encourage everyone to wear red to church. The first Christian Pentecost is recorded in Acts 2 and speaks

of the coming of the Holy Spirit. It was an exciting day with many gathered together in Jerusalem and through the sharing of the Gospel

in different tongues the beginning of the Christian Church had happened in their midst.

Those that were gathered in Jerusalem were primarily men as they were instructed through their Jewish teaching to gather for the

Festival of Weeks (harvest). The notion of Pentecost (50 days after) was nothing new as their one day Festival of Weeks occurred 50 days

after the second day of Passover. The Christian calendar now recognizes Pentecost as 50 days following Easter, the Resurrection of Jesus. Continuing the transition of celebrations, our Pentecost story concludes with the addition of 3,000 people as recorded in Acts 2:41. I find it wonderfully interesting so many of our “Christian” holy days

actually find their root and origination from our ancestors of the Jewish faith.

This year Pentecost falls on Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is quite important on its own, but let us not forget the celebration of

Pentecost right in the middle of what so many see only as a three day weekend. As we celebrate Pentecost this year at Shawnee

Presbyterian, let us share together our connection to our faith history and the future that lays ahead of us through the power and counsel of the Holy Spirit that so wonderfully and unexpectedly came and showed

all new possibilities through following God and God’s Son, Jesus the Christ.

    In Ministry Together,

    Pastor Craig

Thank you one and all for making my birthday celebration so special.

The cupcakes and card basket after church were a great way to

celebrate my special day with all of you.

    Thank you. Pastor Craig

Tuesday, May 5th 10:30am—Blood Pressure taken

11am—Entertainment *Noon = Lunch is served!!!

    Come and ENJOY the Fellowship!!!

Food When We’re Fed Food When We’re Fed will be a time to remind

ourselves to bring food for others every time we gather for communion.

To make this even easier, communion is now shared the

first Sunday of every month. The next

Food When We’re Fed will be

Sunday, May 3rd. Let’s take this opportunity to make a

difference in the world around us. In Ministry Together, Pastor Craig

SPC BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!! SUNDAY, MAY 3RD; 11:30AM Shawnee Presbyterian Church will be celebrating 61 years on

Sunday, May 3rd after Worship. SPC will also be celebrating

Pastor Craig’s 20 year ordination. Bring a side dish to accompany

hamburgers and hot dogs. Donations requested to provide

for the cost of the meat. The party will be under the tent on the east lawn unless it rains, and the

Music Sunday; Sunday, May 10th All are invited this coming Mother's Day, Sunday May 10 at 10:30 am as the Music

Department presents its third annual Music Sunday. This year, the Celebration

Ringers, the Chancel Choir, and Andrew Morris will be featured on many of your

favorites alongside a special guest trumpeter. Special donation envelopes will again be

available for you to pledge your support to the Music Department.

Our choral library is, in many cases dated and not suitable for our current performing

forces. Our resources for bell choir music are limited, and our resources for instrumental

music are even more limited. The cost of sheet music is not going

down either! The average cost for one new piece of bell music is

around $60.00. It is through your very generous gifts that the

Music Department will continue to grow at

    Shawnee Presbyterian Church.

    Your support is appreciated!!!

    “Noisy Offering” Sunday

The children pass decorated cans the last

Sunday of each month to collect change from

people who want to give. It is used to fund the

SPC ‘Love Funds’ at Shawnee Mission

Northwest and Hocker Grove Middle School.

If you would like to support the ‘Love Funds’

but will not be at church Sunday, you can still

make ‘noise’ by adding to the ‘love fund’ jar in

    the office.

Teachers are able to request these funds for

students to pay for ID cards, class fees,

textbook rentals, and supplies. A committee of

    teachers, counselors, and administrators

distributes the funds after reviewing the

    requests. Mission Committee

    “Hands-on, Sitting-down”

Making Blankets for SAFEHOME Come and help make “security” blankets on

Wednesday, May 13, from 10 am to noon in the

SPC parlor for the children staying at

    SAFEHOME. Children often arrive at

SAFEHOME with only the clothes on their backs.

“SAFEHOME’s shelter offers a confidential, safe,

and healing atmosphere for women and children to

love, gain inner strength, build self-esteem, and

heal. Every year, more than 350 women and

children find safety, help, and hope at

    SAFEHOME’s shelter.”

If you want to become better acquainted with each

other while working on projects to help others, this

is the perfect opportunity. We do ‘hands-on’

mission projects that can be done while ‘sitting-

down’ on the second Wednesday of each month.

    Pentecost Sunday is May 24th

We will collect the Presbyterian Church

(USA) Pentecost Offering on May 25th. It is

a special offering which provides a way to

meet the needs of children at risk, youth,

and young adults. Pentecost is an exciting

time of year. We celebrate the birthday of

the Church and celebrate the Holy Spirit

who brings new life and hope. Through our

participation in this offering, we act on the

gifts the spirit brings to provide healing and

hope to younger members of God’s family,

the children at risk, youth, and young

adults. Forty percent of this offering is kept

by us for use on behalf of children at risk.

Our forty percent will go toward helping the

    Presbyterian Children Services, the place

where our birthday bank money goes.
