It’s my pleasure to bring you our new issueof Inside Deborah Magazine, our periodicpublication that highlights news at DeborahHeart and Lung Center and DeborahHospital Foundation.

In these pages you will meet agenerational range of patients, who eachin their own way puts a personal face toNational Men’s Health Month. You willmeet a teenager who received unexpectedhealth news at a high school studentheart screening; a Board Member whoneeded mid-life cardiac care from acongenital cardiac anomaly; and a patientwho required and received emergencycardiac surgery. These three stories illustrate that at any point in our lives, Deborah’sinterventions can be truly life-saving.

This magazine issue also serves as our 2014 Annual Report. This is an opportunity forus to share financial information with our supporters, as well as recognize those donorswhose generosity has continued to make our mission of providing care for all a reality.

It is impossible to embrace a mission like ours, and not have financial challenges. In the course of our 93-year history we have had to work tirelessly to not only providefunding for our mission, but to also maintain the highest possible standards of care, technology, and innovation. Despite these challenges, we have continued to persevereand yes, even thrive.

Deborah may not be able to measure success in financial terms as many otherhospital systems and foundations who do not share our mission, but we will remain arich hospital. A hospital rich in history, rich with overflowing compassion and kindness, and rich with the knowledge that we have done all that is possible to help our fellowcitizens keep and maintain their health. As Gandhi said, “It is health that is realwealth, not pieces of gold and silver.”

With this in mind, it is gratifying to look at our financials, and see the hard work ofon-going strategic planning and execution that has brought new patients and revenuestreams to our hospital. These healthcare initiatives, focusing on complementaryservices to address health problems that affect cardiovascular health – like diabetes, bariatrics, wound care, and lung cancer – continue to grow the Deborah brand. Alongwith programs developed around healthy living and wellness, and our increasedpresence in the community, all bodes well for the future of our organization.

The Foundation through its diligent efforts, had another strong year of gifts anddonations enabling the Center to continue and sustain its mission, and for which weare so grateful!

I hope you enjoy this issue, and I thank you for your continuing support of bothour medical and humanitarian mission. Deborah is truly a hospital with heart!

There is a special group of people at Deborah Heart and Lung Center who collectively represent the backbone ofthe entire organization. These notable people are the compassionate volunteers who each have a unique and personal story about their

Deborah experience. These volunteers provide an invaluable service to patients, families, visitors, and staff, making the hospital a brighter place for everyone.

One of these volunteers who works “behind the scenes” -- rather than upfront like the more visible “Red Coat” Volunteers -- is Rocco Di Giacomo, who has been a tireless volunteer since 2003. “As a member of thecommunity you should give back and this is a great place to do it,” he explained.

Born and raised in Paterson, NJ, Rocco spent his teenage yearsshining on the soccer and baseball fields, playing alongside skilledathletes from countries throughout the world. After high school hewent on to earn a B.S. in Math Education and an M.S. in Mathmaticsfrom Fairleigh Dickinson University. He then went on to asuccessful teaching career at Rancocas Valley High School where hetaught until his retirement in 2003. Unfortunately, in 1997 Rocco was diagnosed with Atrial

Fibrillation (AF) - - a condition that produces irregular and rapidheartbeats. About 40 pounds overweight, Rocco remembersprofusely sweating and having trouble breathing while doingsimple tasks that did not require a lot of physical exertion. “It wasbeginning to affect my life at work and at home,” he explained. As afather of three and grandfather to nine, he had a very active life. “My heartbeat had to go back to a normal rhythm.”He underwent treatment in 1997. Just a few months later his heart

went back to its irregular heartbeat. Then Rocco went through multiplecardioversions administered on two separate occasions, but each time thelow-energy shocks to his heart turned out to be ineffective. He finallydecided to come to Deborah Heart and Lung Center.

“BOOM! The first try and it was back to a regular rhythm and I was fixedfor more than five years,” he explained, regarding his first visit to Deborah.

Because of his positive experience at the hospital, Rocco and hisfriend Gary Frantz -- a colleague and fellow grateful patient at Deborah -- decided in 2003 to begin volunteering at the hospital. “We felt likewe owed them for what they did for us; they treated us like family.”The two have been volunteering in the marketing department ever since.

Rocco and Gary remain optimistic and committed to givingback to the Deborah community. The staff agrees that they havebrightened every day they have had the privilege of workingwith them. Deborah is proud to call both Rocco and Gary“family.”

A Continuum of Care for Men’s Health

The “LIFE” of a teenager Brendan is a typical 16 year old teenager--anenergetic, physically fit basketball and soccerplayer with good grades, a bright future and apositive outlook on life. Last September heattended Deborah Heart and Lung Center’sSudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Program atCherokee High School. Deborah, in conjunctionwith Simon’s Fund, offered free, comprehensivecardiac evaluations to all adolescents within theschool district. During Brendan’s evaluation,Deborah clinicians uncovered a congenital heartabnormality known as “Bicuspid Aortic Valve,”which is a defect in the heart’s aortic valve. Most parents never think to have theirchildren’s hearts tested because symptoms arerarely present. Unfortunately, as we read all toooften, certain undetected cardiac abnormalitiescan result in Sudden Cardiac Arrest, in most

From a baby to the Boardroom – A lifetime with DeborahRobert Birnbaum, 51, was born with two holes in his heart – a congenital heart defect which, left untreated, often

results in childhood mortality. As a member of the Deborah Foundation’s Passaic Chapter, his mother Libby knew of thehospital’s extraordinary reputation. Therefore, immediately after leaving the maternity ward, the Birnbaums headed to

Deborah. Through an exploratory procedure, Deborah’s pediatric cardiologist determined Robertwas not at risk now, but would most likely need open heart surgery within a few years. As Robert approached his 4th birthday, he was back at Deborah. His nervous parents,

having prepared themselves for the ordeal of their toddler son’s surgery, were given a reprieve.Utilizing the state-of-the-art technology available at Deborah, the cardiac team determined hissurgery was not needed at that time, sparing both Robert and his parents, pain and worry.

After a week in the hospital, Robert was discharged and brought home. As young parents, the bills from Robert’s care could have financially devastated

the family. But, through generous gifts from our donors, the Deborah Foundationassists the hospital in removing the financial burden for all of Deborah’s patients.Quite simply, Deborah does not want anyone to make a medical decision basedon their personal financial situation. Over the next 40 years, Robert remained under the watchful care of Deborah’s

cardiologists. It wasn’t until 2008 he finally underwent successful open heartsurgery to repair his heart.

“I am so thankful for the Deborah Hospital Staff! God Bless Deborah!”For decades this expression of gratitude has been echoed by our patients, their loved ones and friends. Most recently it was repeated by three men ofvarying generations: adolescence, middle-aged and senior citizen, whoselives have been altered through interactions with Deborah.

cases striking down aseemingly perfectlyhealthy child. Historicaldata suggests SuddenCardiac Arrest occurs withone in 200,000 children. However, recent, moreaccurate studies suggest theincidence may be four or fivetimes greater. Today, these unnecessarydeaths and undiagnosed conditions are detectable and preventablewith comprehensive heart evaluations. From a parent’s perspective, the death of even one child…is too many. Along with Brendan, more than 250 other students were seen byDeborah’s clinical staff. Approximately 10% of the students werethen further evaluated with an echocardiogram (ultrasound of theheart). Of this group, 10 students, including Brendan, presented

Carpe Diem! “Walking into Deborah Heart andLung Center last week was a muchbetter way to see the place than theway I arrived three years ago!” As an emergency patient beingrushed in on a stretcher, EmoryTurnure’s heart was failing and hewas dying. He remembers the kindface and the reassuring voice of anurse named Debbie who told him,“I’m going to take good care ofyou, don’t worry.” He was thenrushed into surgery where Deborah’s Cardiac Surgical Teamperformed successful open heart surgery, saving Emory’s life. Prior to the surgery Emory had a very weak and very inefficientpumping heart. This condition is not only frightening, but alsogreatly diminishes your quality of life. Since his successfuloperation and cardiac rehab, Emory continues to see Deborahcardiologists for his follow-up care. His health has greatlyimproved, his medications are properly balanced and his quality oflife has been enhanced dramatically. Emory, now 75, enjoys and appreciates every opportunity thatcomes his way. He loves to travel, attend Deborah Foundationlunches, and volunteers to speak as a grateful patient about hisexperiences at Deborah. He remains a strong advocate for theFoundation and gives of both his time and treasury to support themissions of the Foundation and the hospital. He is a member of theFoundation’s Heritage Circle, which is a group of selfless individualswho have generously remembered Deborah Hospital Foundation intheir estate plans. “Today, I feel blessed to be able to visit Deborah and hug ALLthe nurses – there were so many who so compassionately cared forme, and helped my family to understand what was happening. Ialways take the time to tell them how much I appreciate what theydid to help me stay positive and focus on the light at the end ofthe tunnel. They are all like family to me.” Today, Deborah remains the region’s top choice in the delivery ofhigh quality specialized care in the fields of cardiology, pulmonologyand vascular medicine. From a baby’s very first soft heart beat to thebeat of an elder more experienced heart, Deborah’s expert clinical staffremains a life-saving resource for thousands of patients each year. “Knowledge is power…only if you have it and use it.” For Brendan,Robert and Emory knowing and managing their personal healthmeans every day is a gift and they now live each one with purposeand appreciation. It’s your heart; it’s your life, which is why youshould always Demand Deborah!

Over his lifetime Robert has given generouslyof his time and resources to Deborah. In June2015 Robert was elected as the Chairman of theFoundation Board after serving as Secretary since2009. As President and Treasurer of the CliftonChapter, with Life Memberships in the GreaterPompton Area, Clifton and Point PleasantChapters he remains an active volunteer andchairs various fundraising activities benefitingthe Foundation. Robert proudly exclaims, “As a professionalwith an accounting and banking background, Ican assist Deborah by seeking out newfundraising opportunities which will help usremain cost-conscious in times of managed carecutbacks. I am truly honored to be affiliatedwith Deborah and feel my service on the Boardof Directors is one way of giving back for theincredible care I’ve received for more than 40years.”

significant enough findings for them to bereferred to a pediatric cardiologist for a more in-depth evaluation. In Brendan’s case, he was seenby his pediatric cardiologist, cleared for all hisathletic activities and went on to be named theOffensive MVP for Cherokee High School’s juniorvarsity soccer team. Brendan’s mother Paula states, “Our family isfortunate we decided to participate in Deborah’sprogram and to heed the physician’s advice tofollow up with a pediatric cardiologist. Brendanis now aware of his condition, but he refuses tolet this define him.” A junior at Cherokee, he isusing his experience to inspire others to getscreened. “I hope by sharing my story, more kidswill get tested. If just one person gets diagnosedwho previously didn’t know they had a heartissue, then it was worth sharing this very privatematter with the public,” Brendan related. Note: Brendan is looking forward to the upcomingsoccer and basketball seasons and fully intends toparticipate in college athletics once he graduates.

Giving More Than You Think You Can-

If you’re like most people, you probably think of lifeinsurance as a way to ensure that your loved ones will betaken care of when you’re no longer here; and that’s true. But surprisingly, life insurance can also be an easy andaffordable way to make a very meaningful gift to Deborah. A life insurance policy can allow you to make a muchlarger gift than you might have ever thought you could.Although the cost to you (your premiums) is relativelysmall, the ultimate gift you make to Deborah can be quitesubstantial.

Naming Deborah as Beneficiary

This is the easiest and most affordable way to make asignificant impact on Deborah. Just request a “change ofbeneficiary” form from your insurance company and nameDeborah Hospital Foundation as first, second orcontingent beneficiary of your policy. You simply continueto pay your premiums, if needed. While you don’t receivea current income tax deduction, your estate tax isreduced by the amount that ultimately comes toDeborah. Beneficiary designations allow you theflexibility to modify them as your circumstanceschange. They are a wonderful way to make ameaningful difference.

Gifting an Existing Insurance Policy

You may have a whole oruniversal life policy that you onceacquired for other reasons. Thesecan make very tax-effectivecharitable gifts. Simply contact

your insurance company and name Deborah HospitalFoundation as the sole owner and sole beneficiary of yourpolicy.

You get the satisfaction of creating a significant legacyfor a cause you believe in and a charitable tax deductionfor your policy’s fair market value. You continue to makeany needed premium payments and receive additionaldeductions for each.

Please note: all noncash gifts over $5,000 require anappraisal for deductions.

We encourage you to talk to a financial professional oryour attorney to explore other ways life insuranceproducts may provide solutions for your charitable andestate planning objectives.

Please call the Foundation at 609-893-0100 beforemaking any insurance gift or if you have any questions.
